Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Djed Spence has joined Leeds United on loan for the rest of the 2023/24 season.

Tottenham had chased the signing of the promising young right-back all summer last year, and there were great expectations placed on Spence when he finally signed for the North London club in a £19m deal (ESPN).

Spurs fans were left frustrated when, under Antonio Conte, Spence was limited to just five appearances for the Lilywhites, spending a total of 41 minutes on the pitch for the Lilywhites (Transfermarkt).

French side Rennes took Spence on loan for the second half of the 2022/23 campaign, but he also failed to make much of an impact there.

Returning to North London this summer, there was renewed optimism that Spence could finally get his Spurs career going under new manager Ange Postecoglou. However, it is thought the youngster has ‘failed’ to impress the Australian, too (Alasdair Gold).

Djed Spence drops back down to the Championship

Spence has now returned to the Championship with Leeds United, although reports indicate there is no option or obligation to buy in the deal. Leeds will pay £1m for the season-long loan (Phil Hay).

Spurs Web Opinion

It really baffles me how Djed Spence has not been given a proper opportunity at Spurs, but for both Conte and now Postecoglou to not be keen on him, there must be something about the way he trains that is affecting his chances. I’d like to see him go on loan and prove himself, as I think he could still be a player worth keeping on our books.
