It is well documented that before Grealish completed his £100m move to Manchester City in 2021, the attacker had attracted interest from both Manchester United and Spurs (Daily Mail).

Speaking to The Telegraph in 2018 after Spurs failed with a bid of around £25m, the England international admitted his disappointment at the club’s inability to agree on a fee and felt that by plying his trade in N17 he would have forced his way into Gareth Southgate’s plans.

VG have now explained Spurs initially offered €8m (£6.9m) before tabling a second offer of around €25m (£21.5m) with a ‘fat five-year contract’ for the player.

The outlet spoke to Jack’s father, Kevin, who revealed that he did not want his son to make the switch to N17 since Spurs were penny-pinching.

He is quoted as saying about the failed move: “I said put some real money on the table. I didn’t want to see the club in our hearts robbed of money. I said ‘no, Jack is not going’. Something was not right. They tried to get him cheap. For pennies. Maybe I was naive, but I said ‘we’re not going’.”

“It was Jack who got them up. When he returned and became captain, the odds were 20 to manage promotion. I know it’s a team game, but still… The next year he was also the one who kept Villa up. Then he left for £100m.”

According to Steve Bruce, Tottenham had tried to snap Grealish up for just £10 million (Telegraph) but the move was rejected.

Now, according to Sherwood, that move could have happened even sooner, had Harry Redknapp listened to his assistant manager after seeing Grealish in action for the Villa U18s.

He said: “I watched him when he was 16 against Tottenham’s Under-18s, I remember going back to the first-team game at White Hart Lane and Redknapp said, ‘Well, what was the score?’ I said, ‘I don’t know, all I was doing was watching this boy Grealish.”

“It was incredible. I said, ‘[Villa] want to take Jermaine Jenas, we should do a swap for this boy.’ But Harry, quite rightly, said, ‘He’s only 16, by the time he’s in the first-team I’ll be gone’.

“As a football manager, he’s absolutely right, looking after yourself as you would do.”

On the aspect of Jenas going the other way, Sherwood added: “But for the club it would’ve been a great move.

“It would’ve been a great move for Jermaine as he ended up going to Villa [on loan] anyway. There was more need for Jermaine in their team than there was for a young Grealish.

“That’s when you can nick players, when someone’s desperate, if you want a swap now.

“For the here and now they would’ve taken Jenas to try and stay in the league as they were trying to survive for many, many years.”

It’s always hard to predict what might have been. It’s very likely that, had we signed Grealish as a 16-year-old, he would have ended up being another Jack Clarke and done very little for us.

Gareth Southgate will be hoping that the England captain is back among the goals against Wales, with the Three Lions needing a result against Robert Page’s men to seal qualification to the knockout stages.

While Kane arguably might not get the respect he deserves from some England fans, his international teammates certainly seem to appreciate the striker.

A couple of days ago, Phil Foden declared that the Spurs star was the best finisher he has ever seen (SportBible), which is high praise considering he plays alongside Erling Haaland at Manchester City.

“It is not just me who is a big fan of the Manchester City star either. I watched him against Chelsea in the League Cup this month and just wanted him to get the ball.

“It’s those 15-yard passes when he backs in, turns and gets a shot off.

“That works with Harry so much and Grealish is the perfect man to provide the service.

I believe that Southgate will use Grealish as a super-sub off the bench at this World Cup as the City star can be quite deadly when he comes on for the final 20 and 30 minutes against tired legs. Kane and Sterling are nailed on to start every game and I believe the only question is who gets the nod between Foden and Saka each match.

This transfer still hurts me. The rumours of Daniel Levy offering £3 million plus Josh Onomah to secure Grealish’s services will go down in Spurs folklore.

Although I don’t think he is worth the £100 million that City paid for him, having a player of Grealish’s ability alongside Heung-Min Son, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, and Harry Kane would have been a game-changer for Spurs during Mauricio Pochettino’s reign.

City snapped up Grealish in a £100m deal from Aston Villa – a British-record transfer fee (ESPN).

Pep Guardiola’s side continued pursuing Kane late into the window but they were not able to prise the striker away from North London (Sky Sports).

According to Football Insider, City’s top brass now believe they would have been better off signing Kane over Grealish.

It is said they now wish they had bid higher for the Tottenham striker and driven the deal over the line instead of spending big money on Grealish first.

Ahead of Sunday’s game, it seemed as if Alli’s days at Spurs were numbered, with the midfielder struggling to get game time since Antonio Conte’s arrival at the club.

Reports had indicated that the Italian had told the club to move the 25-year-old on in January, with the likes of Newcastle United and West Ham thought to be interested in the England international.

Alli demonstrated once again yesterday (just like he did under Nuno in the first few games of the season) that his biggest asset is his running power.

Tottenham’s failure to get a deal for Grealish over the line during the summer of 2018 has been a source of much frustration for Spurs fans over the last few years. 

The Lilywhites reportedly made a cheeky bid of £3m plus Joshua Onomah for the midfielder which was turned down by Villa before returning with a £25m offer for him later in the window, which also did not prove to be enough to prise the player away from Villa Park after they were the subject of a takeover.

“He come in and he pulled me on his first day, and he says ‘so you were gonna sign for Spurs?’, I was like ‘yeah, nearly’. He was like ‘£25m?’ – I think we were like nine games in – ‘nine games in now, look.’ On the board it said no goals, one assist.

“He was like ‘I need you to get your numbers up’, and that was one thing I tried to do, to get my numbers up there, and as soon as I’ve gone to City, that’s what the manager has said to me.”

Tottenham’s refusal to pay up extra for Grealish in 2018 was undoubtedly a major mistake. However, it is very easy to be critical of Tottenham’s decision in hindsight.

While the summer from a Spurs point of view was dominated by the speculation surrounding Harry Kane’s future, Son’s future, in contrast, was settled after the South Korean committed his future to the club by penning a four-year contract earlier this summer.

Waddle believes that the goals and assists that the 29-year-old contributes in addition to the marketing benefits due to his profile back in South Korea, makes Son more valuable than Grealish.

“He must be a nightmare to play against. He comes at you again and again, he’s always looking forward and looking positive. He has always got good energy. He is a top-class player.

“When I read about all these clubs trying to sign certain players, he never gets mentioned. It’s like ‘he’s a Tottenham player’.

The Evening Standard claimed earlier this week that Tottenham were prepared to listen to offers for the former academy graduate.

Winks came to prominence under the management of Mauricio Pochettino and hit the heights with his performance in the Champions League group stage clash against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2017 as a 21-year-old.

On that evening, Winks had a 94% pass completion and helped to break up the midfield play of the Spanish giants.

The midfielder has since experienced a tough season under Jose Mourinho with his lack of game time having ended up costing him a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2020.

Winks admitted in November that he admitted that not playing regularly was difficult (talkSPORT) and it remains to be seen what future he may have under new boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

Kane had come in for criticism from some within the media after failing to score in any of England’s three Group D fixtures against Croatia, Scotland or the Czech Republic.

The 27-year-old ended his goalscoring drought at Euro 2020 when it was Grealish, who had come on as a replacement managed to cross the ball onto the head of Kane to secure England a famous 2-0 victory against rivals Germany and set up a quarter final clash against Ukraine.

Grealish hailed the professionalism he has witnessed from the England captain and has backed him to break Wayne Rooney’s goalscoring record for the Three Lions and also the Premier League tally which is held by Alan Shearer.

The Villa skipper has praised Kane’s ability to be more than just a goalscorer, having proven for both club and country he is capable of dropping deep and turning creator.

“It is obviously good to get your first goal at a tournament, especially when all you lot would not shut up about it,” Grealish told Sky Sports.

“It is obviously good. To get his first one, he will be buzzing but no one in there would ever doubt H. He is the best player I have ever played with. He is unbelievable. He is an unbelievable professional on and off the pitch.

“When you see him around the place, this is why he is England captain. The thing that sticks out is that he is not just a goalscorer.

“There are players from the past who just scored goals, goals, goals. In my opinion he will break the Premier League one and the England one but he is not just a goalscorer. He is unbelievable.

“Like when he drops deep and finds passes and puts it through people’s legs.

“He is obviously unbelievable and I am buzzing for him that he has obviously got the first goal and hopefully for all of us there are many more to come.”

Daniel Levy must be kicking himself for passing up the opportunity to sign Grealish in a cut-price £25million deal back in 2018 when he is now said to be valued at over £100million (MEN).

How things could have been different if Grealish had made the move to North London given his ability to unlock a defence, something we have been desperately lacking since Christian Eriksen left the club.

Going into England’s round of 16 clash against Germany on Tuesday, many had some had called for Kane to be dropped on the back of his performances in the group stages.

The Tottenham striker put in another sluggish display for the majority of the encounter against the Germans and just when it seemed as though the knives could be out again for the 27-year-old, he popped up in the box to put England 2-0 ahead.

The Spurs star’s celebration certainly showed how much weight had been lifted off his shoulders as the striker was mobbed by his England teammates.

Grealish, who was instrumental in both of England’s goals after coming on as a substitute, insisted that the criticism that has come Kane’s way has been unfair.

The Aston Villa midfielder told BBC (3 hours 21 minutes onwards): “This Euros have been different to many before. There is so much tactical stuff going on that’s it is hard for H (Kane).

“He’s probably our most talked-about player. Probably our best player. It’s difficult because teams are going to double up on him and try and get him out of the game.

“So, I don’t think it’s anyone’s fault really, in particular. But when the game opened up in the end, as soon as Luke give me the ball I actually was going to shoot and bring it onto my right foot. Then I seen H in the box, so I crossed it for him.”

Kane made that finish look easy but the cross was a little behind him and he showed excellent composure to manoeuvre his body to put it beyond the reach of Manuel Neuer. Given the pressure he was under, one might have expected him to just snatch at the chance or to go for power but he showed a cool head under the circumstances.
