Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Younes Kaboul had high praise for his old teammate Dimitar Berbatov when speaking on the Official Tottenham Hotspur Podcast.
Spurs signed the Bulgaria international in the summer of 2006 from Bayer Leverkusen for £10.9 million and spent two successful years at the North London side.
Over the course of the two seasons, Berbatov made 102 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham, scoring 46 goals and providing 29 assists, and won the EFL Cup at the North London side in 2008 (TransferMarkt).
The Bulgarian was part of the Spurs team that last won a trophy back in 2008, with the likes of Hugo Lloris, Luka Modric, Jan Vertonghen, Gareth Bale, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min all failing to lift a piece of silverware with the Lilywhites since that time.
Where does Berbatov rank in all-time Spurs players?
After Berbatov’s successful stint at Tottenham, Manchester United came calling and Sir Alex Ferguson signed the striker in the summer of 2008, where the former Spurs forward lifted multiple trophies, including two Premier League titles.
Kaboul was part of the team that won the EFL Cup final against Chelsea in 2008 and when asked who the North London side’s greatest-ever player was, the French centre-back stated:
“Ever? I don’t want to give a player from back in the day. I know they’re legends, Paul Gascoigne, Glenn Hoddle, but I haven’t watched them. I would say Berba. Berba was special. On the top of my head now, I would say Berba.”
While Berbatov is arguably one of the most talented players Tottenham have had on their books, the striker’s time at the club was short-lived and he then joined Spurs’ PL rivals Man United.
Spurs Web Opinion
Despite not winning a trophy, Harry Kane, who became Tottenham’s all-time goalscorer after breaking Jimmy Greaves’ record recently, could arguably be considered the greatest Spurs player.
However, the likes of Glenn Hoddle and Paul Gascoigne, who brought the North London side’s fans joy in yesteryears, are also in the conversation.
