Jurgen Klopp has now admitted his comments about Tottenham following the 1-1 draw at Anfield were ‘wrong’, after receiving some backlash in the past 24 hours.
The Liverpool manager claimed he does not like the kind of football Antonio Conte and Spurs put on show in the late Saturday kick-off, while adding that Tottenham ‘should do more for the game’ (Football London).
This came after the Lilywhites set up predominantly to defend and break against the title challengers, a game plan that worked perfectly on the night and even put them 1-0 up.
Klopp received some backlash over the past two days, with Simon Jordan and Danny Murphy both telling TalkSPORT he was wrong about Tottenham’s duty to play a certain way. The pair argued it was Conte’s right to choose the best way to get three points on the day.
The Liverpool manager clarified his comments this afternoon, claiming it felt right in the moment but was ‘wrong’ on reflection.
When discussing Pep Guardiola’s recent comments (Independent), Klopp said about Spurs (The Athletic): “Look, as managers, and I had this experience recently, after a game we are massively influenced by the situation.
“So I said after the game — would I say it again, no — ‘Oh, (Tottenham) play how they play, and they’re still only fifth’. And it felt good in that moment! But anyway, wrong.
“It was just my feeling in that moment. I couldn’t respect Antonio more, what he’s doing, my god, how he organises teams.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
If Klopp had indeed just said that Tottenham’s game plan works but they are still fifth, that would have been okay. A little dig, but okay. It’s the fact he implied Tottenham’s way of playing was wrong and they had a duty to play exactly how Klopp wants them to play.
