El Pais have claimed that Jurgen Klopp dismissed the suggestion that Liverpool should sign Richarlison, making it clear to the club’s hierarchy that he wanted Darwin Nunez instead.
Tottenham agreed on a fee of £60m including add-ons with Everton for the signing of Richarlison, and the fee raised some eyebrows at the time.
Many wondered whether the Brazilian would even be able to break into Spurs’ starting eleven, given how well the front three of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski had done last season.
However, in just a couple of months, the former Everton man has already demonstrated that he has a lot to offer and has seemingly won over the Tottenham faithful.
In his Champions League debut last Wednesday, which was just his second start for the club, Richarlison produced two fantastic headers to help the Lilywhites overcome Marseille.
El Pais now claim that agent Pini Zahavi proposed the 25-year-old’s name to Klopp in the summer but the Liverpool boss had no interest in signing him.
The report adds that the names of Son Heung-min and Robert Lewandowski were also put to the Reds boss but he had his heart set on signing Nunez instead.
EL Pais go on to claim that Klopp and the Liverpool hierarchy have already accepted that they have made a big ‘miscalculation’ by paying €100m (£86.7m) for the Uruguayan international, given his technical shortcomings.
Spurs Web Opinion
Given that Richarlison is a player who wears his heart on his sleeve, I do not think he would have betrayed Everton fans by joining Liverpool even if he had the chance to do so.
There is no way Liverpool would have been able to afford Son, given that he just signed a four-year contract a year ago. If the Reds felt they had a chance of getting the South Korean, I am sure they would have made an effort for him.
