Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie O’Hara has urged Kalvin Phillips to leave Manchester City while also warning the England international that he would also not be a regular in Ange Postecoglou’s side.
The midfielder has struggled for game time since joining the Premier League champions from Leeds United for an initial £42million fee back in July of last year (Sky Sports).
Pep Guardiola has continued to overlook the 27-year-old as a regular starter in his side and even with Rodri having been suspended in recent weeks, he instead decided to turn to 18-year-old Rico Lewis to fill the void left by the Spaniard ahead of Phillips.
Is Kalvin Phillips good enough for Spurs?
Football Transfers claimed earlier this week that Tottenham were considering a move for Phillips during the upcoming January transfer window with the player likely to depart the Etihad at the turn of the new year.
O’Hara told talkSPORT: “He is getting absolutely pied, isn’t he?! He has got to go.
“If you are getting left out for an 18-year-old, and a winger, then a centre-half comes on in midfield in front of you as well, then you might as well pack yourself off.
“You aren’t going to play. If I am him then I am knocking on the door and say ‘Pep, just pay me up’.
“Where does he go? What football club would take him? He doesn’t get into Tottenham’s team. What team does he get in? He has to start. If he is leaving Man City, then he has to play week in and week out.”

O’Hara is certainly correct to claim that Phillips would not get into Tottenham’s side considering the partnership that Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have forged, while Rodrigo Bentancur is set to return from injury before the end of the year and Oliver Skipp is able to provide cover, and that is without even suggesting that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could also leave in January.
A six-month loan could be an option with Bissouma and Sarr heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations set to run from the middle of January to mid-February.
