Pundit Clinton Morrison has revealed his surprise that Tottenham Hotspur did not sign James Ward-Prowse this summer, after praising his strong start to the season with West Ham.
It was a busy summer for Tottenham, with new manager Ange Postecoglou adding seven players to his squad.
The likes of James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario, and Micky van de Ven have come in and hit the ground running, proving to be perfect fits for the Spurs squad.
Naturally, the summer was filled with plenty of speculation surrounding other players who didn’t quite make the move to North London.
One player who was consistently linked with a switch to Tottenham was James Ward-Prowse (Sky Sports). After being relegated with Southampton, it was clear that the midfielder would join a Premier League club.
Ultimately, Spurs didn’t snatch the player, and he ended up joining West Ham. Ward-Prowse has enjoyed a great start there, too, with two goals and six assists for the Hammers so far (Transfermarkt).
Morrison surprised Spurs didn’t sign Ward-Prowse
Speaking to Sky Sports News (via HITC) about Ward-Prowse, Clinton Morrison expressed his surprise that a club like Spurs didn’t sign him up this summer.
He said: “You can talk about his free-kicks and set-pieces, which are brilliant because they can get you like 10-15 goals a season, but he has got more than that.
“You saw that he is running beyond Michail Antonio. He can pass the ball. He can do everything a midfielder can do.
“I was surprised West Ham got him for such a cheap price because I thought there would be a lot of other teams, like Chelsea or Tottenham – but he has gone to West Ham and he has started the season ever so well.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Ward-Prowse is a fantastic player and even though we signed James Maddison, I think we could have used both players. It’s a shame, but financially it may have been a case of one or the other, and Maddison was the right choice.
