Alasdair Gold has revealed that Leicester City midfielder James Maddison and Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi are two players that Tottenham ‘like’ ahead of the summer transfer window.
Maddison has been in supreme form this season for the Foxes, having amassed 12 goal contributions in 15 Premier League games so far, and the attacking midfielder now has less than 18 months left on his contract at the King Power Stadium (Transfermarkt).
Spurs (Football Insider) and Newcastle United (The Northern Echo) were both credited with an interest in the England international ahead of January, and it remains to be seen whether those clubs will reignite their interest in the player in the summer.
Meanwhile, reports over recent weeks have indicated that Spurs are expected to make wholesale changes at the back in the summer, with the club thought to be targeting two new central defenders (The Athletic).
Gold believes that Guehi is one of the players that Antonio Conte’s men would have their eye on and he would not be surprised if that was the case with Maddison as well.
When asked if Tottenham will look to improve their homegrown numbers in the summer, the journalist said on a Q&A on Football.London: “I’d be surprised if Spurs aren’t one of those looking at James Maddison in the summer, especially if he still has only a year left on his contract at that point.
“At the moment, with Djed Spence on loan at Rennes, they only have seven of the eight homegrown spots filled by senior players in their European squad.
“It’s definitely an area that needs addressing in the summer whoever they end up targeting. Tottenham definitely like Marc Guehi, and like Maddison, I’d expect there will be plenty of competition for his signature if Palace decide to sell.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I would personally be surprised if Spurs pursue Maddison as the 26-year-old does not strike me as a Conte type of midfielder, owing to his shortcomings out of possession.
I believe the Tottenham head coach would prefer a more dynamic and powerful number eight such as Milinkovic-Savic, Kessie or Kudus.
