James Maddison has admitted his disappointment at the fact that Tottenham were not able to pick up all three points against Brentford despite dominating proceedings for large parts of the game.

The first half at the Gtech Community Stadium was quite frantic, with plenty of chances at both ends of the pitch, with the 2-2 scoreline at the interval being a fair reflection of an entertaining first 45 minutes of football.

However, Ange Postecoglou’s men took full control of proceedings from the start of the second period, with the home side dropping deeper and deeper in an attempt to deny the Lilywhites time and space in the final third.

Tottenham lacked the required cutting edge in the final third to make their dominance count, and while Maddison admitted that the team needed to be better going forward, he suggested that there were positives to take from the performance.

James Maddison can only be so happy with a point

The England international told Football.London following the 2-2 draw on Sunday: “It’s an OK result. We have to try to take the positives but you never want to be happy with a point.

“Especially in the second half because we dominated but we’ll take the positives from the performance and I think that will lead to more three points down the line.

“It’s the first game in this new system with a new manager so we’re all learning on the job. We’ll look at what went right and what we can do better going forwards. We’ll take the point and the positives.”

Maddison donned the captain’s armband for the final 15 minutes of the encounter after both Son Heung-min and Cristian Romero had been taken off.

When asked if becoming a vice-captain so quickly after his move gives him confidence, the attacking midfielder responded: “The armband is just a label, you know? My role now will be exactly the same as what it would have been if someone else was named vice-captain. That’s just how I am.

“He (Postecoglou) might have looked at me and how I’ve been and thought my qualities suit that role. But I would have been that way anyway because I didn’t have it when I first came in. I’m very appreciative but nothing will change for me and I’ll just try to use my experience to help the squad.”

The main issue for Spurs yesterday was the fact both Son and Kulusevski were not aggressive enough in possession. They passed up the opportunity to take on their man in one vs one situations time and again, which is why I was not surprised at Postecoglou’s decision to take Son off and bring Perisic on for the final 15 minutes of the game.
