Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has hinted that former Tottenham manager David Pleat recommended Ivan Toney as a possible option for the North Londoners but Daniel Levy was hesitant to sanction a deal for the striker.

After a prolific couple of seasons in League One with the Posh, Toney made a step up to the Championship in the summer when he completed a move to Brentford for a fee of around £5m (Sky Sports).

The striker has certainly not looked out of place in the second tier of English football, having netted 15 goals in 18 league games for Brentford so far (transfermarkt.com).

MacAnthony previously claimed that Toney was good enough to play for a Premier Leauge side, even suggesting that he could have been a suitable back up to Harry Kane at Spurs.

The Posh chairman has now suggested that Pleat, who has scouted players for Spurs in the past, believed that Toney would be a useful addition to the Tottenham ranks.

He said on The Hard Truth podcast: “David thought Ivan was a relatively cheap option to boost the Spurs squad what with all Harry Kane’s injury problems.

“(Spurs chairman Daniel) Levy might have been worried Spurs fans would laugh at him for signing a League One player but, in any case, the pandemic ruined any chance of the move going ahead.”

It is certainly not unheard of for players coming from League One to make an immediate impact at Premier League level like in Dele Alli’s case at Spurs. However, I doubt if we ever seriously considered Toney as an option this summer as Mourinho would have likely wanted a relatively proven centre-forward to take some work-load off Kane.
