With Tottenham Hotspur in one of the worst crises in recent history, speculation is running wild ahead of the summer transfer window.
On Monday, Sky sports reported that Harry Kane wanted to leave North London in favour of trophies. After the Villa defeat on Wednesday, it seemed clear to me that Kane did have this intention, as he applauded our fans emotionally.
All Spurs fans love Kane, he’s one of our greatest players of all time, however, most can agree that we should sell Kane if that’s what he wants.
We have failed the England captain in recent years, shown by the lack of ambition from the board, therefore we need to look at a potential rebuild within the N17 squad.
In my opinion, which may be quite unpopular, a new striker would be less essential compared to other positions if Kane leaves. If we were offered £150 million, my main priority would be a new playmaker, such as Grealish, alongside a new defence.
Due to this, there would be less money available for a striker, which is why I believe that Ivan Toney could be the man for the job.
At the time of writing this, Brentford have just qualified for the play-off final. If they fail to get promoted, it would make the signing much easier. Toney surely wants Premier League football, so Brentford failing to fulfil his wishes could force them to sell their star player.
In recent weeks, the Sun reported that Brentford want £35 million for their main man, with Chelsea and West Ham in the race. For me, this price isn’t too high for a player of his quality, especially when you look at his attributes.
This season, Toney scored 31 goals during his 45 Championship games (Transfermarkt), earning him the golden boot. In fact, only Paul Mullin scored more goals than him this season throughout England. This shows his class and why he should be considered by the Spurs hierarchy.
Furthermore, at the age of just 25, Toney has potential to grow far further, something that is vital for spurs in this rebuild.
To add, Toney would be classed as a home-grown player within the N17 squad. This may not seem too important to Spurs fans, however with potential homegrown players like Kane, Alli and Winks leaving, the club must make sure they sign English players.
However, the hope for all Spurs fans is that Kane stays in North London and changes his mind. We can all dream, but I think this is unlikely. There could be other players capable of replacing him for us, including the likes of Vlahovic and Andre Silva.
Despite this, I believe that Toney is the man to go for, mainly due to being home-grown as well as having some incredible goal-scoring abilities. If we want his signature, we will have to beat other Premier League rivals to him, but there’s no doubt the signing is possible.
Spurs fans should expect a crazy window this summer, with the potential of star players leaving and a rebuild beginning. Whatever happens, let’s hope it works out in our favour.
