Alasdair Gold has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are fans of Ivan Toney but admitted that the Brentford striker’s ban complicates any potential transfer.
The question on every Spurs fan’s lips at the moment is who the club will sign to fill Harry Kane’s massive shoes.
There have been some suggestions over the course of the summer that Tottenham are considering Toney as a potential replacement for the England captain (Football Transfers).
The Athletic even reported over the weekend that Spurs have held discussions internally about making a move for the Brentford striker in January once he has served his ban (for breaking FA’s betting rules).
The publication added that the North London club’s interest in Toney is an additional reason why they might go for a young, up-and-coming striker such as Gift Orban this summer rather than a big-name number nine.
Alasdair Gold confirms that Spurs like Ivan Toney
Gold has now become the latest journalist to confirm that the 27-year-old is indeed admired by the Lilywhites.
The journalist said on the Gold and Guest Podcast: “Ironically as they were playing Brentford, Ivan Toney would be a great fit for the system. Not now because of his ban, but I certainly know that Spurs really like Toney, I imagine in January that’s something we see.
“It’s a difficult one, if you’re Ivan Toney can you leave Brentford a month or two after a ban where you’ve robbed them of your time? I don’t know if that’s achievable or not.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I do not think Spurs can afford to plan their transfer strategy around a potential move for Toney in January.
Brentford have shown that they can be notoriously difficult to negotiate with and there is also a very real possibility that the striker might extend his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium over the coming months.
