Alasdair Gold has said that Tottenham Hotspur will consider making a move to sign Ivan Toney during the January transfer window.

Toney is currently serving an eight-month FA ban for breaching betting regulations, which will lapse in January, and several reports over the course of the summer have indicated that Tottenham are plotting a move for the striker in the next transfer window.

It was reported by The Times a couple of weeks ago that Spurs and Arsenal are both considering a January move for the centre-forward, who is allegedly valued by Brentford at £80m.

A few days ago Football Insider even asserted that the Bees could demand a whopping £100m for their star man when the window reopens mid-season.

However, it was alleged that this evaluation had not put off Spurs, who plan on ‘assessing a potential January move’ for the 27-year-old.

Spurs and others will look at Ivan Toney in January

Gold has now confirmed that the Brentford man is indeed on Tottenham’s radar, backing the Lilywhites to have a ‘proper look’ at the player.

When asked if the North London club could make a move for Toney in January, the journalist said in a Q&A on Football London: “There’s certainly interest in the striker as there will be from plenty of clubs.

“I’d imagine Spurs are among those having a proper look in January. Toney returns from his ban against them so they’ll get a very close-up look!”

Tottenham do not tend to make £70m-plus signings and one can also argue that Toney is not an ideal fit for Postecoglou’s system. The Australian evidently prefers having a fluid frontline with forwards who can interchange positions rather than lining up with a traditional centre-forward.
