The Evening Standard have revealed that Tottenham legend Jermain Defoe and Manchester City legend Yaya Toure are both set to join Spurs as academy coaches.

Defoe is one of the most prolific finishers of the Premier League era, having scored 143 goals in 363 appearances across his two spells at Spurs (Transfermarkt).

The 39-year-old called time on his playing career back in March following his second spell at Sunderland and the former England star previously had a brief spell on the coaching staff at Ibrox after Steven Gerrard left Rangers to join Aston Villa.

The former Spurs striker is now set to join as academy coach from the start of next month, according to Dan Kilpatrick.

Toure, who is one of the Premier League’s all-time great midfielders, having won three league titles during his time at City, has spent time working towards his badges with QPR, Blackburn and the Welsh FA before serving as an assistant coach at Ukrainian sides Olimpik Donetsk and Russian club Akhmat Grozny.

The Ivorian has been working with Spurs’ Under-18s since last December and he is now set to be offered a full-time position by the north London club.

Having two legends of the game like Defoe and Toure would be brilliant for the youngsters coming through the ranks at Spurs. There is a lot that the academy players can learn from picking the pair’s brain about what it takes to reach the very top of the game.
