Tottenham assistant head coach, Cristian Stellini, has sent an apology to the Spurs supporters on behalf of the club and the players after last night’s FA Cup exit.

Spurs named a changed XI for the match against Sheffield United, with Lucas Moura, Heung-min Son, and Richarlison leading the line.

The Brazilian was fielded in his international position at centre-forward, with Harry Kane rested on the bench at Bramall Lane.

Unfortunately, it was a night to forget for Richarlison and his Spurs teammates as they put in one of the most uninspiring performances of the season.

The 1-0 defeat to Championship opposition hardly comes as a surprise, with Tottenham having been knocked out by Middlesbrough just last year.

The Lilywhites have likely waved goodbye to their only realistic chance of lifting silverware this season, unless they manage to create history in the Champions League.

Stellini was keen to offer an apology to the Tottenham supporters, while hinting that they will see a reaction from the players this weekend against Wolves.

He said (Football London): “I think we missed a big opportunity and we have to apologise to the fans.

“Today there were 5,000 of them here to watch our performance and we apologise because we missed a big opportunity.”

He added: “When you have a different performance. The last two or three performances were really high-intensity but when you have this type of performance I hope it will be easy to explain to the players what we need to do.

“Normally our team react after a game like this. It’s not the first time it happened and we have to react immediately. Saturday we have an important game and Wednesday another one and we continue.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

This was Tottenham’s best chance to win something in recent years, with Blackburn in the next round and only Man United and Man City left from the big six rivals.

The same thing happens year after year at Spurs, and it’s about time that something changed.
