Gabriel Agbonlahor has said that Roy Keane has been proven right in his assessment of Sergio Reguilon, describing the left-back’s performance against Leeds United last weekend as “shocking”.
Tottenham’s backline has been extremely porous over the last couple of months and looks in need of significant strengthening in the summer.
Unsurprisingly, reports indicate that Spurs are prioritising reinforcements in central defence during the transfer window.
The North Londoners may also be in the market for a right-back, with rumours suggesting that both Serge Aurier and Matt Doherty could be on their ways out of the club.
Agbonlahor believes left-back is another area that the Lilywhites need to strengthen in the summer, insisting that Reguilon has not been good enough recently.
Keane and Jamie Redknapp had a heated debate over the quality of the Tottenham squad a couple of months ago, with Redknapp taking issue with the former Manchester United captain’s claim that Real Madrid would not have let Reguilon leave if he was good enough.
Agbonlahor believes that the Irishman’s statement has been vindicated on the back of the Spaniard showing at Elland Road.
The former Aston Villa striker told Football Insider: “It was the defending of a team that looked like their season’s gone.
“It wasn’t a team that has any confidence they’re going to get into the top four. It wasn’t a team that looked together.
“It looked like a bunch of players where the season’s done for them, they tossed it off.
“Yes, Harry Kane and [Heung-min] Son are always a threat but the rest of the team went through the motions.
“The amount of times Leeds had them two-on-one or three-on-two, it was amazing to see.
“I think it’s a big job for Mason and Daniel Levy has a big job on his hands to bring in somebody who can motivate these players.
“You could say they need a whole new back four. We saw Roy Keane’s comments about Reguilon a few months ago and he was exactly right. He proved Roy Keane right, he was shocking.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Reguilon’s performances over the last couple of months have been disappointing but I do not believe one can read too much into the the players’ displays over the last couple of months.
It is clear that the squad’s confidence has been affected by our recent struggles and even the likes of Hojbjerg and Son have been poor. Reguilon deserves a fresh start under a new manager next season before he can be judged too harshly.
