Man United legend, Roy Keane, hit out at Harry Kane during ITV Sport’s coverage of England vs Austria, claiming that the Spurs man was dropping deep too much.
Kane lined up in attack for the Three Lions alongside Jack Grealish, Bakayo Saka and Jesse Lingard as England looked to test out a few options ahead of the Euros.
Some of Gareth Southgate’s main goalscoring threats, like Raheem Sterling, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Phil Foden, Mason Mount and more were not in attendance for the game.
Kane could be seen dropping deep and collecting the ball at times, as he does so often with Spurs, before looking up and spraying the ball out wide.
Within just a few minutes of the game, we saw Kane collect the ball on the halfway line, turn past two Austrian players and play a ball that put Trent Alexander-Arnold through for a shot.
However, Keane claimed that he wanted to see Kane get on the end of crosses in the box once the ball was worked out wide.
He said (02/06/21 – ITV1 – 20:00 onwards): “There’s nothing wrong with Kane linking up because he gets that joy with Tottenham.
“But I think when it gets into the wide areas. We saw Trent coming back once or twice because he looked forward (and no one was in the box).
“If you’re Trent, you just put it into the box when you are in a good wide position and then it’s up to Kane. You argue afterwards. The man on the ball is dictating it, so Kane linking up is all well and good.
“But when it goes wide, and you have brilliant fullbacks and wide players who are going to put it into the box, and you are the main goalscorer then you get yourself in the box.
“I expect players around to have a go at Kane. Don’t be frightened. I will put it in and say ‘next time I put that ball in their then you better get in that box. You are the main threat’ – You’ll be going mad at him.”
