Manchester United’s legendary former captain Roy Keane has now had his say on the ongoing Harry Kane transfer saga.
Keane has urged Kane to forget about moving away from Tottenham Hotspur this summer, suggesting the ‘gentleman’s agreement’ with Daniel Levy is ‘bizarre’.
It has been widely reported that Kane believed he had a gentleman’s agreement with Levy that meant he would be granted a big move away from Spurs this summer.
Kane has now returned to Hotspur Way after initially not showing up to Tottenham pre-season training which he was scheduled to partake in last Monday. He is quarantining until Thursday in The Lodge which is adjacent to the training pitches.
The 28-year-old striker broke his silence, releasing a statement regarding the situation on social media, claiming he had never refused to train.
The England captain has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City, although the only official bid from the Citizens was in June and was rejected by Tottenham.
Speaking to ITV Sport (07/08/21), Keane had a very firm stance on Kane’s situation, specifically regarding the ‘gentleman’s agreement’ (as transcribed by The Express).
He said: “Unless it’s written in a contract, forget about it. It’s bizarre.”
Former Arsenal man Ian Wright echoed this point, stating: “I don’t know, something’s been lost in translation.
“With the way it’s going and wanting to leave, Grealish’s move [to City] was seamless. Obviously, this hasn’t happened for Tottenham yet, there’s no clause, Tottenham have every right.
“We’re talking about Harry Kane here. We’ve seen Grealish go for £100m, without European experience, Harry Kane has all that so how much is he worth? We will have to see how it moves on.”

The gentleman’s agreement does come across as a bit strange. Or at least very naive from Kane’s point of view. Levy is one of the most cynical and stubborn chairmen you will find and if it’s not on paper, or in a contract – it doesn’t exist. Surely Kane was aware of that?
