Roy Keane has defended Harry Kane’s lacklustre finishing against Hungary on Thursday, putting it down to a lack of sharpness.

Kane did not start Tottenham’s first two Premier League games of the season against Manchester City and Wolves due to the speculation surrounding his future.

However, after he confirmed that he would be staying at the club, Nuno Espirito Santo has started the striker in the second leg against Pacos De Ferriera as well as the clash against Watford last weekend, with the 28-year-old netting a brace in the former.

Kane also got on the scoresheet for England in their 4-0 win over Hungary on Thursday, getting on the end of Raheem Sterling’s cross in the second half.

However, the Tottenham man could have arguably had a hat-trick had he been more clinical, being denied on several occasions by Hungarian goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.

Keane believes that it was simply a case of Kane not being up to speed at this stage of the season.

The former Man Utd midfielder told ITV last night (8:40pm, September 2, 2021): “We have seen Kane here a couple of times, just lack of sharpness.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We know that Kane is historically a slow starter and takes a few games to get up to speed. Despite all that has gone on this summer, I would not be surprised if the 28-year-old ends up winning the Golden Boot again.

However, it would certainly be a more difficult race this time out, with Ronaldo and Lukaku also back in the Premier League, and Salah starting the season strongly.
