In a surprising turn of events, Manchester United have contacted Tottenham Hotspur to try and negotiate a deal for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg before the transfer window closes.
Hojbjerg had been a regular starter for Tottenham during the tenure of both Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte and was thought to be a key member of the leadership group at the club.
Despite Spurs’ woes in general last season, Hojbjerg was able to register 12 goal contributions across 44 appearances for the Lilywhites in the 2022/23 campaign (Transfermarkt).
However, since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou, there have been question marks raised over the suitability of the Danish midfielder. Hojbjerg appears to have slipped down the pecking order at Spurs, and has had to settle for just two substitute appearances so far this season.
It has previously been suggested that Hojbjerg is one of a handful of players that Tottenham are actively looking to sell this summer (Daily Mail).
Will Hojbjerg go to Manchester United?
Recently, it emerged that Manchester United were keen to discuss a move for Hojbjerg as they look to bolster their midfield (Telegraph). And now, the latest from Sky Sports reveals contact has been made by the Red Devils.
It is believed Manchester United have now made “initial contact” regarding the player, and as things stand, it is said Tottenham would sanction the sale “if a suitable offer” is presented by their Premier League rivals.
As part of the report, Sky Sports’ Laura Hunter suggests this is a “surprising twist” in United’s hunt for a midfielder, as Hojbjerg is unlikely to be “the answer” to Erik ten Hag’s desire to sign a “young, dynamic ball player.”
However, Fabrizio Romano reported recently that Hojbjerg is not currently a top target for Man United as they prefer Sofyan Amrabat.
Spurs Web Opinion
I don’t think we should sell Hojbjerg at all, and definitely not to a top-six rival. He has shown in his substitute appearances this season that he can be a calming influence and a reliable presence in the midfield when we need it. While he may not be a regular starter now, Hojbjerg still has a lot to offer for Spurs.
