Tottenham Hotspur are considering making a move to sign Manchester United defender Harry Maguire when the transfer window reopens in January, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.
The arrival of Ange Postecoglou to Spurs has seen somewhat of a changing of the guard across the backline, with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven the new first-choice partnership.
This summer, the North London side saw an overhaul in their defence with the departures of Clement Lenglet, who was on loan from Barcelona last season, Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez.
Eric Dier has also found himself drifting down the pecking order since the arrival of Postecoglou, with the Australian manager seemingly not fancying the England international.
As a result, Tottenham look light in the centre-back area, with Van de Ven and Ashley Phillips the only two additions made in the transfer window despite multiple exits.
Is Harry Maguire the solution to Spurs defence?
Maguire signed for United in the summer of 2019 from Leicester City for £80m million after catching a lot of people’s attention with his displays for the Foxes as well as with the Three Lions in the 2018 World Cup.
However, things have unravelled for the 30-year-old over the last few years at the Red Devils, with the centre-back losing his place in the team as well as the captaincy at Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag clearly does not have faith in Maguire to start week-in week-out for United and the Dutch manager has instead often relied on Victor Lindelof to play as the backup when Raphael Varane or Lisandro Martinez are unavailable.
Spurs Web Opinion
Considering Romero’s consistent fitness issues at Tottenham, it would be wise for us to add reinforcements in defence. However, it does not seem wise to count on a player like Maguire, who has been poor for United in recent months.
