According to the print edition of AS (20/05/23 as relayed by Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur will be kicking themselves after watching Bryan Gil and Erik Lamela fire Sevilla to the Europa League final.

Tottenham paid €25m (£21.4m) plus Lamela to snap up Bryan Gil from Sevilla back in 2021, with the youngster arriving in North London with a big reputation at the time, being considered by many to be one of the best up-and-coming talents in Spanish football.

However, the move has not worked out for the Lilywhites, with the winger being loaned back to the Andalusian side just 18 months on from singing for the club.

Gil has shone since his return to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, having scored two and provided three assists since his switch, one of which came against Juventus last week.

The winger’s cross was met with a perfectly-placed header from Erik Lamela in extra time, with the goal sending Jose Luis Mendilibar’s men to the final of the Europa League.

AS have now suggested that the game was watched by the Tottenham directors ‘with their mouths hanging open’ and they were ‘bursting with envy and indignation’ at their transfer decisions.

It is alleged that the club hierarchy were envious of the fact that they have struggled to pick up results this season while two players they allowed to leave now have a shot at European glory.

Conte made an error by not handing more opportunities to Gil and the decision to let him leave on loan in January was evidently not the right one.

The 22-year-old has the potential to become a key player at Spurs next season under a head coach like Arne Slot, who is willing to trust young talent.
