On the nine-year anniversary of Erik Lamela’s rabona goal in the Europa League, the Argentine has taken to social media to tell Tottenham fans that he misses them.

Lamela made 257 appearances in his eight years at Tottenham after arriving from AS Roma in 2013, scoring 37 goals and providing 47 assists during his time in North London (Transfermarkt).

The winger had more than his fair share of injury troubles during his time at Spurs and was not always a fixture in the starting eleven when he was fit but he was a fan-favourite, thanks to the fight he showed on the pitch, and he gave supporters some memorable moments during his time at the club.

Among those were two brilliant rabona goals, the second of which came in the North London Derby and won the Puskas.

However, it was the first of the two, which came in the Europa League against Asteras Tripolis back in 2014, that was arguably the better goal.

Erik Lamela misses his Tottenham family

Monday was the ninth anniversary of the strike and the Sevilla star took to Instagram story to write: “9 years! I miss you @Spursofficial. Good luck tonight.”

Spurs went on to win 2-0 against Fulham, so perhaps Lamela’s luck really did come in handy.

Spurs Web Opinion

How Lamela managed to get as much power on that Robona strike still remains a complete mystery to me. We might never see a goal like that one ever again.

Erik Lamela has admitted that his history and connection with Tottenham Hotspur gives him an added reason to perform well in Sevilla’s upcoming Champions League clash against Arsenal.

One of the reasons Lamela was adored by the Tottenham faithful was because of his tendency to wear his heart on his sleeve and give his all for the shirt.

The winger would often put his body on the line and fly into tackles, which was especially the case during derby matches.

Lamela has given Spurs fans a couple of memorable North London derby memories, including his Rabona goal back in 2021, which won the Puskas award.

The 31-year-old’s altercation with Jack Wilshere on the pitch is also fondly remembered by a lot of Tottenham supporters.

Erik Lamela wants to get one over on Arsenal again

The Argentine will now get to take on the old enemy yet again, with the Gunners travelling to Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium to take on Sevilla tonight, and he admitted that he is keen to do well against Mikel Arteta’s men.

Lamela told Marca: “Arsenal work very well as a team, being Premier League, physical and fast. I always want to win. In the past, I played for Tottenham and it means something to me. I love them very much. This game is special because of the rivalry, yes.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that we will see Lamela fly into tackles against the Arsenal players later this evening if he does start for the La Liga side.

Erik Lamela would love for Sevilla to re-sign Bryan Gil from Tottenham Hotspur in January to link up with the young winger again.

Gil returned to Sevilla on loan during the last January transfer window and the winger impressed for Los Nervionenses, even earning a recall to the Spanish national team.

The 22-year-old would perhaps have been hoping to catch the eye of Ange Postecoglou when he returned to Spurs summer but those hopes were dashed when he picked up a groin injury that sidelined him right from the start of pre-season.

The silky winger does not appear to be far away from a return to action as he took to social media last week to confirm that he is now nearing full fitness.

According to L’Equipe, Lyon tried to sign Gil on loan during transfer deadline day but failed to do so owing to ‘financial or timing reasons’.

Erik Lamela would love to play with Bryan Gil again

It remains to be seen if another potential loan move is on the cards for the youngster in January and Lamela has now said that he would certainly welcome the player’s return to the Raman Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

When asked about Gil potentially returning to Seville, the former Tottenham man told Estadio Deportivo: “I would love it, for the person he is. He’s a great teammate, we get on great.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While Gil certainly has the attributes to do well in Postecoglou’s system, the Australian now has an embarrassment of riches in the wide areas following the arrival of Brennan Johnson.

With Spurs having no European football and out of the Carabao Cup, I do not see the 22-year-old getting many minutes over the coming months. So, another loan move in January appears likely for the winger.

According to the print edition of AS (20/05/23 as relayed by Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur will be kicking themselves after watching Bryan Gil and Erik Lamela fire Sevilla to the Europa League final.

Tottenham paid €25m (£21.4m) plus Lamela to snap up Bryan Gil from Sevilla back in 2021, with the youngster arriving in North London with a big reputation at the time, being considered by many to be one of the best up-and-coming talents in Spanish football.

However, the move has not worked out for the Lilywhites, with the winger being loaned back to the Andalusian side just 18 months on from singing for the club.

Gil has shone since his return to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, having scored two and provided three assists since his switch, one of which came against Juventus last week.

The winger’s cross was met with a perfectly-placed header from Erik Lamela in extra time, with the goal sending Jose Luis Mendilibar’s men to the final of the Europa League.

AS have now suggested that the game was watched by the Tottenham directors ‘with their mouths hanging open’ and they were ‘bursting with envy and indignation’ at their transfer decisions.

It is alleged that the club hierarchy were envious of the fact that they have struggled to pick up results this season while two players they allowed to leave now have a shot at European glory.

Spurs Web Opinion

Conte made an error by not handing more opportunities to Gil and the decision to let him leave on loan in January was evidently not the right one.

The 22-year-old has the potential to become a key player at Spurs next season under a head coach like Arne Slot, who is willing to trust young talent.

Sevilla sealed progression to the final of the Europa League on Thursday, with on-loan Tottenham man Bryan Gil combining with former Spurs star Erik Lamela for an extra-time winner.

Juventus and Sevilla had played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg and the scoreline was repeated in the return leg at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, with the tie thus going into extra-time.

Five minutes into extra time, Bryan Gil, who started the encounter, beat Juan Cuadrado out wide and produced a floated cross from the left flank which substitute Lamela met with a perfectly placed head into the far corner.

The goal proved to be the difference between the sides and means that the on-loan Tottenham man, along with the Argentine, will have a shot at Europa League glory when they take on AS Roma in the final on June 1.

Watch the goal below:

Spurs Web Opinion

I cannot help but feel that we could have done with Gil in the second half of the season as none of our other attackers are as direct as the Spaniard.

The 22-year-old showed promising signs when he did get starts in January but Antonio Conte never seemed to fully trust him.

Erik Lamela is delighted to see Ryan Mason being handed the Spurs reins until the end of the season, with the winger wishing his former Tottenham teammate the best.

It did not come as a surprise when Tottenham decided to pull the plug on the Cristian Stellini experiment following the Lilywhites’ 6-1 drubbing at St James’ Park on Sunday.

The Italian and the rest of Antonio Conte’s coaching staff (apart from set-piece coach Gianni Vio) were asked to pack their bags, with Mason once again being asked to steer the ship, just as he did towards the end of the 2020-21 season after Jose Mourinho was sacked.

Spurs confirmed on Tuesday that Matt Wells, Nigel Gibbs and Perry Suckling will assist Mason in their roles as acting assistant head coach, acting first-team coach and acting goalkeeping coach respectively.

Lamela not only worked under Mason during his brief spell in charge two years ago but the Argentine also played alongside the midfielder for Tottenham.

Here’s how the Sevilla man reacted to the development:

Spurs Web Opinion

We could certainly use someone like Lamela at this moment, given the passion and fight that Coco showed every single time he put the shirt on.

That is the sort of fight that Mason will demand from the team when they step out onto the park on Thursday against Manchester United.

Gil rejoined the La Liga side on loan in January after Spurs signed him from the same team back in 2021. In fact, Erik Lamela was even included in part of the deal, moving in the opposite direction (Sky Sports).

It appears the two wingers have sparked somewhat of a connection in Spain, with Gil assisting the former Spurs star with an inviting cross in the 73rd minute, which Lamela nodded home.

Spurs Web Opinion:

It does appear that Gil is more suited to La Liga than he is the Premier League, and the lack of an English loan makes me feel Spurs are setting him up for a sale rather than a move into the starting XI.

Former Tottenham fan favourite Erik Lamela found the back of the net for Sevilla in their 3-2 win over Espanyol but got sent off for a rash challenge late in the encounter.

Lamela perhaps did not do justice to his talent at Spurs, with his eight-year spell at the club being marred by injuries.

However, the Argentine always gave everything for the shirt and was quite willing to engage in the dark arts, which is perhaps what made him such a popular figure among the Tottenham fan base.

So, Spurs fans will not be surprised to hear that Lamela scored Sevilla’s opener against Espanyol but received his marching orders after two rash tackles in either half saw him pick up two bookings.

Watch the highlights of the game below:

Spurs Web Opinion

Just like with Cristian Romero, this aggression is what makes Lamela the kind of player he is, and so, you would not want to blunt it. You just have to accept that he is occasionally going to get himself sent off.

I also found it quite interesting that Julen Lopetegui used the 30-year-old as a centre-forward in this match – something that hardly ever happened during the Argentine’s time at Spurs.

Erik Lamela has revealed he is looking forward to taking on Tottenham tomorrow in a pre-season friendly in South Korea, 12 months on from leaving the club (SevillaFC.es).

The winger spent eight years at Spurs and made over 250 appearances for the club, contributing 36 goals and 46 assists in all competitions before departing last summer to join Spanish club Sevilla (TransferMarkt).

Lamela endured yet another injury-hit season last time out, but has declared he is ‘working hard every day’ to bounce back with a healthier campaign this year (Sevilla).

When asked about his time at Spurs, the Argentine warmly responded: “After so many years at Spurs, it’s going to be a special game for me. I’ll be seeing many teammates and I have a lot of friends there.”

Despite the fact that Saturday’s game is only a pre-season friendly, the atmosphere should be a special one. Not only is Lamela reuniting with old friends, but the South Korean fans will also get a look at their native hero, Heung Min Son, who Conte revealed will start the match (Football London).

Speaking about the South Korean attacker, Lamela told reporters (Sevilla): “I’ve been talking to him these days and I hope to see him and give him a hug tomorrow. What can I say about him? Every year he shows his incredible talent.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

While fans bemoaned Lamela’s consistent injury problems, the winger ball-rolled and slide-tackled his way to cult hero status among many of the Spurs faithful during his time in North London. The manner in which he still talks about the club only cements that fact.

Lamela always gave his all for the badge through thick and thin, so he deserves a resoundingly warm welcome at Saturday’s match in South Korea.

Former Tottenham winger Erik Lamela scored for Sevilla in their 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid on Sunday night.

Lamela, who joined the Spanish side permanently from Spurs in January, netted his first goal for the club since October having been absent for a large chunk of the campaign with a shoulder injury (Transfermarkt).

After some good work from Jesus Corona, the ball came to the Argentine in the penalty area who tapped into an empty Real Madrid net to hand his side a 2-0 lead against the Champions League semi-finalists.

But Lamela’s tally would not be enough for Los Rojiblancos to secure three important points, as they eventually lost the match 3-2 after Real rallied back in the second half.

Rodrygo gave the away side a lifeline five minutes after the restart, before Nacho Fernandez levelled the scoring with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Sevilla were then dealt a big blow when Karim Benzema fired in the winner in stoppage time to notch his 25th goal of the season and extend Real’s lead atop LaLiga.

Spurs Web Opinion

It seemed that Lamela padded Sevilla’s lead in the first half and put them in a good position to win against Real, but it wasn’t to be in the end.

He has had another tough season in his career having missed a large portion of games through injury, but it is nice to see him on the score sheet in one of his first games back in action.

Former Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini has revealed the club were forced into selling Erik Lamela to Tottenham in 2013 after Napoli failed with their attempts to sign the winger.

Lamela was one of seven incomings at Spurs during that summer after the world record sale of Gareth Bale, with the Argentine having showcased two impressive seasons with Roma.

Lamela joined the club for a total £30 million fee (BBC Sport) and would go on to spend eight years in North London in what was a career blighted by injuries.

But Tottenham’s signing of Lamela, who departed the club for Sevilla last summer, came without difficulty after he also had suitors across Italy in the form of Napoli.

The Partenopei, led by manager Aurelio De Laurentiis at the time, pursued Lamela hard and even offered his father a commission worth £1.6 million (€2m) in a desperate attempt to seal a move.

Then Roma chief Sabatini believes Napoli’s actions in turn forced the exit of their prised youngster, but the club eventually sided with selling him to Spurs instead.

He said (via Area Napoli): “We would never have thought of selling Erik, but factors intervened that made us change our mind. His sale brought us pain, but by the time we made the decision, the player had an unparalleled offer.

“When Lamela was attacked by an Italian club [Napoli], which made him an offer of 3.5 million-plus a commission to his father of 2 million, we had lost the player.

“I spoke to the agent, telling him that I would raise our offer, but he wasn’t very convinced. I saw him turned off, I thought I could not fully recover him, so I set up the idea of selling him. This is football, uncontrollable.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham’s move for Lamela was one of the most exciting at the time as he had come off a really excellent season for Roma.

Unfortunately, his time at Spurs didn’t exactly go to plan with injuries making it very difficult for him for the most part, although he always played his heart out for the badge.

The Argentine perhaps did not fulfil his potential in North London, partly due to his injury owes but he did produce some moments of magic in a Spurs shirt.

The Rabona he scored in the North London derby last year would certainly rank among the best moments Lamela produced at Tottenham.

Unfortunately, the 29-year-old ended up being sent off in the second half of that game as Arsenal ran out 2-1 winners.

However, that does not take away from the audaciousness of the goal and Lamela’s brilliant striker deservedly won the Puskas Award.

Dier took to social media to congratulate his former teammate on winning the prize.

The centre-back wrote on his Instagram story: “Congrats bro. We miss you so much.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We have certainly lost much more important players than Lamela over recent years in the form of Dembele, Eriksen, Walker, Vertonghen etc. However, there is no one that I miss more than the Argentine. I loved the passion with which he played and the cult figure he became among the fan base.

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Erik Lamela has won the coveted Puskas award for his goal against Arsenal at the FIFA Best ceremony earlier this evening.

The Argentinean, who has since left the club to join Sevilla Sevilla – saw his stunning improvised rabona find the bottom corner in last season’s north London derby at the Emirates Stadium.

The goal came after Sergio Reguilon cushioned a volley into Lucas Moura, who laid the ball off to Lamela inside the Arsenal box. Lamela then struck a first-time rabona with his left foot which went through the legs of Thomas Partey and into the far corner of the goal.

The goal gave Tottenham the lead in the fixture but it proved to be one of disappointment after losing the match 2-1, while Lamela was also later sent off.

It is the second successive time a Tottenham goal has been chosen as the winner of the award, following in the footsteps of Heung-min Son’s brilliant individual effort against Burnley in 2020.

Lamela beat the likes of Luis Diaz, Patrik Schick and Riyad Mahrez in taking the crown.

The 29-year-old’s effort also scooped the Premier League Goal of the Season back in June (Spurs official).

Lamela joined the ceremony via video link and was quoted by the Daily Star as saying: “Thank you so much, I’m very happy to win this award,”

“Honestly, nothing [was going through his mind], in that moment I didn’t think too much.

“I didn’t realise how special the goal was.

“I just kicked the ball and started running around the pitch with my teammates!”

SpursWeb Opinion

Lamela was capable of a stunning rabona and it was not the first time in which he had scored such a goal for the club, having also netted in a Europa League tie during a 5-1 victory over Greek side Asteras Tripolis in 2014.

Former Tottenham midfielder Erik Lamela has been named as one of three finalists competing for the FIFA Puskas Award for his brilliant rabona against Arsenal last season.

Lamela came on as a substitute for the injured Son Heung-min in the first half at the Emirates back in March and made an instant impact in quite spectacular fashion.

The Argentine produced a brilliant rabona, which nutmegged Thomas Partey and flew into the bottom corner past Bernd Leno.

Unfortunately, the remainder of the encounter was not particularly memorable for either Lamela or Spurs as the former Roma man got sent off and the Gunners came back from a goal down to win 2-1.

Lamela, who departed Spurs in the summer to join Sevilla following eight seasons in North London, has now made the final three for the FIFA Puskas award 2021 for his brilliant effort.

The former Tottenham man is joined by Patrik Schick (for the Czech Republic against Scotland at Euro 2020) and Mehdi Taremi (for Porto away to Chelsea in the Champions League) in vying for the prize.

Should Lamela win the award, it will be a second season in a row that a Spurs player has won it after Son Heung-min took home the prize last year for his brilliant solo effort against Burnley.

Spurs Web Opinion

That goal would have been one of the most memorable Tottenham goals in history (possibly rivalling Gazza’s FA Cup semifinal free kick) had we managed to win the game. Unfortunately, that was not to be the case but Lamela’s goal certainly deserves to win the Puskas Award ahead of the other two strikes.

Erik Lamela has undergone surgery on his right shoulder after picking up an injury in training, Sevilla have now confirmed.

Lamela departed Tottenham this summer following eight seasons in North London.

The Argentine was a fantastic servant for Spurs and always gave his all when he got minutes under the belt.

However, there was a feeling that he never quite managed to live up to his potential at Tottenham, partly due to his injury woes which hampered his ability to appear consistently for the Premier League outfit.

The 29-year-old has been in fantastic form since his move to Spain over the summer.

The Argentine international was playing a key part under Julen Lopetegui, having scored four goals in 13 La Liga appearances so far.

However, unfortunately, the former Spurs man has succumbed to injury once again.

Sevilla have revealed that Lamela will undergo surgery on his right shoulder after picking up an injury in training with the first team.

The attacking midfielder is expected to be out of action for four months.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is a shame that Lamela now faces four months on the sidelines after the terrific start he had to his Sevilla career.

The fact that it is a shoulder injury rather than his calf or groin, which he had issues with at Spurs, is even more disappointing.

Hopefully, the 29-year-old could bounce back from this setback and prove his worth to the La Liga club.

Some Spurs fans on social media got emotional after seeing Jan Vertonghen and Erik Lamela exchange messages with one another on social media.

Lamela has been nominated for the Puskas Award 2021 for his incredible Rabona goal in the North London derby last year.

If the Argentine takes home the award, it will be the second consecutive year that a Spurs player has won it, with Son Heung-min scooping it last year for his solo effort against Burnley.

Vertonghen, who departed Spurs to join Benfica in the summer of 2020, took to social media to insist that his old Tottenham teammate, Lamela, deserves the award. The Argentine responded to the Belgian’s post, thanking him for his kind words.

The pair’s exchange has struck an emotional chord with some Spurs fans on social media, many of whom insisted they would have both Lamela and Vertonghen back in North London in a heartbeat.

Spurs Web Opinion

Since I started supporting Spurs, the squad from around 2015-2018 has been by far the most likeable group of players. The fan base certainly resonated with them a great deal. It is a shame that they do not have any silverware to show for their efforts at the club.

Erik Lamela has reacted to Jan Vertonghen’s social media post suggesting that the Argentine deserves to win the Puskas Award 2021.

Son Heung-min took home the award last year for his brilliant solo effort in Tottenham’s 5-0 win over Burnely in 2019.

The award could now be won by a Spurs player for two years in a row, with Lamela being nominated for his goal in the North London derby earlier this year.

As Tottenham fans will remember only too well, the 29-year-old produced a sensational Rabona from a tight angle that managed to squeeze through Thomas Partey’s legs into the far corner.

FIFA.com have revealed that the winner will be selected by an international jury comprising a panel of FIFA Legends and registered fans from all over the world.

Vertonghen was certainly in no doubt who deserved the award, insisting that his former Spurs teammate had the best goal of the calendar year.

The Sevilla man has now responded to the Belgian, thanking him for his words.

Spurs Web Opinion

While there are some brilliant goals on that shortlist, I think Lamela’s one might have the edge, not just because of the brilliant piece of skill but also due to the occasion and importance of the game. To pull that off in a North London Derby was special and I believe he deserves the award.

Erik Lamela’s rabona goal in Tottenham colours against Arsenal has been shortlisted for the 2021 Puskas Award.

The Argentine winger, who departed Spurs to join Sevilla in the summer, was at the centre of attention in the North London Derby at the Emirates Stadium back in March this year.

He opened the scoring for visiting Spurs with a stunning rabona effort through the legs of Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey, which arrowed into the corner of Bernd Leno’s net.

Arsenal, though, would ultimately take the spoils with a 2-1 win and Lamela also saw red later into the encounter after picking up a second yellow card.

The strike was the second of its kind in the 29-year-old’s career, as he tallied his first rabona in a Europa League game for Spurs against Asteras Tripolis in 2014.

Should Lamela’s strike be voted as the goal of the year, it would be the second successive time a Tottenham goal has been selected, after Heung-min Son’s solo effort against Burnley in 2020 secured last year’s award.

Spurs Web Opinion

Despite the result in such a big game, you can’t fault the ridiculousness and sheer talent behind the strike. Lamela has always had something like that in his locker, it’s just a shame we didn’t get to see it enough or on a more consistent basis.

Erik Lamela has revealed that he was set to watch Tottenham against Burnley this afternoon from Seville before the game was snowed off.

The Tottenham players travelled to Turf Moor, along with fans who made the four-hour journey from London, only to find the match was postponed due to heavy snowfall.

It seems there was another fan who was disappointed all the way from Spain, with Lamela posting on Instagram that he was set to tune in and watch his old teammates.

Lamela was sold to Sevilla this summer in a deal that also involved young Bryan Gil going the other way, bringing an end to the Argentine’s seven years in North London.

Just says after he was spotted walking around in Tottenham gear, the midfielder confirmed that he also still watches Spurs games too.

Spurs Web Opinion:

I was always a big fan of Lamela. I am convinced he could have been a great player had you removed his injury problems. He had the mentality and work rate that was well suited to the Premier League and I was sorry to see him go.

Some Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to react to a picture of former player Erik Lamela, in which he was still wearing Spurs branded clothing.

Lamela, 29, saw a stint lasting eight years at Spurs come to an end in the summer after completing a move to LaLiga side Sevilla.

Since the move to Spain, the Argentine winger has scored four goals and notched one assist, with two of those tallies coming in his debut for the club against Rayo Vallecano in August.

But despite no longer being associated with the N17 side, Lamela appears to have chosen not to completely forget his time in North London after he uploaded a photo to Instagram of himself donning a Spurs t-shirt.

Some fans appeared to love the ex-Spurs man’s affection for the club by reacting to the post on Twitter, while one user felt the act would annoy current employers Sevilla.

Spurs Web Opinion

Lamela had a turbulent number of seasons at Spurs, but it was clear to see just how much he cared for the club – especially by giving his all out on the pitch. The picture shows he holds Spurs close to his heart still, even if he is with another team.
