Football Transfers have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are now set to face competition from Chelsea in the race for Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

A departure from his boyhood club looks inevitable for James Ward-Prowse this summer after the Saints’ relegation from the top flight.

Unsurprisingly, a number of top-flight clubs, including Tottenham, seem to be circling around the midfielder.

Reports of Tottenham’s interest in Ward-Prowse first emerged back in March, with Football Insider reporting at the time that the North London club are ‘big admirers’ of the 28-year-old and are ‘likely’ to make a move for him.

It has subsequently emerged over recent weeks that Newcastle United (The Daily Mail) and Aston Villa (The Athletic) are also eyeing a move for the England international.

If TEAMtalk’s latest update is to be believed, Chelsea have now also entered the race for Ward-Prowse, with Mauricio Pochettino said to be a ‘fan’ of the player.

The report adds that the Argentine’s pre-existing relationship with the Saints star from their time together at the South Coast club could be crucial in helping Chelsea see off competition from the likes of Spurs for the midfielder.

Spurs Web Opinion

I would not be too disappointed if we miss out on Ward-Prowse as apart from his set-piece ability (which is evidently world-class), he would be nothing more than a functional midfielder.

I would rather see Spurs go after Joao Palhina or Ruben Neves, who both appear to be on the market this summer.
