Thierry Henry has been effusive in his praise of Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni, after the Italian defender put in a top performance in the recent Champions League game against Benfica.

Bastoni has become a mainstay in the Inter defence, and at the age of 23, is now one of the most accomplished and most sought-after young defenders in the game.

The centre-half has contributed six assists in 33 games for Inter Milan this season across all competitions, with his latest coming in the quarter-final tie with Benfica this week (Transfermarkt). Bastoni put in a fine cross, which Nicola Barella duly headed home.

Bastoni has long been rumoured to be a target for Tottenham Hotspur and is thought to be at the top of their wishlist for the summer (Inter Live).

The Italian giants are hoping to keep hold of their star defender, but recent reports from TuttoSport suggest there are complications in the negotiations for a new deal.

With performances like the one he put in in the last game, Inter had better get that contract issue resolved.

Henry told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (11/04/23 at 10:20 pm): “I love when a centre-back, playing in a back three, brings the ball out. I mean, what a delivery there.

“You can see that Gilberto could have probably come out (to stop Bastoni’s cross), but what a ball from Bastoni on the head of Barella, who still has to do a lot to score. What a cross from, Bastoni.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Alessandro Bastoni really is a top, top player who has so many attributes to his game already even at such a young age.

He won’t come cheap, and I’m not convinced the player even wants to leave Italy, but what a signing he would be if we could pull it off this summer.
