TEAMtalk have asserted that Tottenham Hotspur intend to make a move for Lille striker Jonathan David in January.

David has been prolific in Ligue 1 since making the switch to Lille from Gent back in 2020 and the centre-forward has four goals in 12 appearances across all competitions so far this season.

TEAMtalk assert that despite Tottenham’s impressive start to the season, Ange Postecoglou is keen on adding more firepower to his forward line in January.

Should Jonathan David make the move to Spurs?

The North London club have allegedly identified David as a potential upgrade on Richarlison, with the report adding that the Lilywhites have a ‘firm intention’ of making a move for the striker.

It is explained that the 23-year-old is ready to make a step up and would be willing to swap Stade Pierre Mauroy for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The publication adds that Spurs are even willing to wait until next summer to sign the Canadian international if they are not able to get a deal for him over the line in January.

Spurs Web Opinion

I fully expect Spurs and Postecoglou to put off their search for a number nine until next summer’s transfer window. I believe that signing a centre-back and a central midfielder would be the club’s top priorities in January.

According to Fichajes, Chelsea are plotting a big January offer for Lille striker Jonathan David, who was linked with a move to Tottenham in the summer.

After Harry Kane joined Bayern Munich, a whole host of number nines were linked with a move to Spurs during the summer transfer window, with David being one of the prominent names among those (CaughtOffside).

In fact, at one point, Italian journalist Rudy Galetti even suggested that the prolific Lille star, who was allegedly valued at €50m-€60m (£43m-£51.5m), was at the top of Tottenham’s wishlist to replace Kane.

However, in the end, Spurs chose against signing an out-and-out number nine, securing the services of the versatile Brennan Johnson instead.

Chelsea are now keen on Jonathan David

If Tottenham were to reignite their interest in David in January, they are now expected to face competition from their London rivals, Chelsea, with Fichajes reporting that the Blues are eyeing a move for the 23-year-old.

It is explained that the West London club are keen to bolster their forward line and that the Canadian international has impressed the Stamford Bridge hierarchy.

The report adds that Chelsea are plotting an offer of €60m (£51.5m) for David, which they expect to be enough to prise him away from the Stade Pierre Mauroy.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham’s decision on whether to pursue a centre-forward in January will depend on how well Son adapts to the number nine role and whether Richarlison can turn his form around. There is no doubt that addressing other areas such as centre-back would be a bigger priority for the Lilywhites.

Fabrizio Romano has said that even though Tottenham explored a deal for Gift Orban, the North London club never submitted an offer.

Despite all the speculation over the last month and a half linking Orban with a move to Tottenham (Voetbalkrant), the move does not appear to have progressed, and with just two days left in the transfer window, it now appears quite unlikely to go through.

In fact, Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas said on the Last Word on Spurs podcast on Sunday that Spurs may decide against signing an out-and-out centre-forward of the Nigerian’s profile.

He suggested that Ange Postecoglou prefers a versatile wide-attacker such as Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson over a number nine.

Tottenham never bid for highly-rated Gift Orban

Romano has now stated that while Spurs are still prioritising signing an offensive player, the club never actually submitted an offer for Orban.

The journalist told Kick: “The priority [for Tottenham] is to sign an offensive player. We know they have to replace Harry Kane. They considered Gift Orban for a long time but they never sent an official bid.

“We had reports from Belgium about an official bid, it was last week or 10 days ago, but I’m told this is not true. Tottenham never sent an official bid.

“They considered that possibility, like they considered also Jonathan David who is a player they always appreciated, but they never presented an official bid.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Perhaps Postecoglou plans on using Son Heung-min upfront, which is why he is leaning towards a wide-attacker such as Brennan Johnson rather than another young, up-and-coming striker like Orban, who might not be ready yet for Premier League football.

At the outset of the season, I wrote that if Harry Kane was sold, it would be my preference for them not to replace him immediately (SpursWeb).

If I were a politician, I would double down on this assertion, manipulate statistics and spread false narratives to back me up. Fortunately, that is not my occupation, and I am more than willing to put my hands up and admit that I was not correct in this assumption.

My main reasoning in performing this abrupt one-eighty is that Tottenham have started far better than I believed would be possible. The goalkeeper looks confident; the defence, despite a few hairy moments, is gelling and the midfield has transformed into one of the best in the league.

In a complete reversal of the last few seasons, our attack now looks like our weakest area on the pitch with Son and Deki yet to find their feet in the new system and Richarlison looking ineffective as the sole striker.

Whisper it quietly, but if we get the attack sorted, we could be in for quite the season. As I said, I did not expect us to be in this position. I expected the transition to be a longer process, but the way the players have taken on instruction and bought into the ‘Postecoglou way’ has been remarkable.

So, instead of the patience I preached before, I am now roaring ‘Carpe Diem’ from the top of my voice. There is money in the bank. Go and spend it. Go out and buy Jonathan David. I will tell you why…

The Need for a striker

One of my principal arguments in favour of waiting to sign a striker was that I believed that Richarlison had enough about him to do a serviceable job up front.

However, after two games – which I do concede is a limited sample size – I have somewhat shifted my perspective. Richarlison has looked lost in both performances, and some energetic pressing and a couple of half chances are not enough to warrant a starting position in the team.

Some will argue that he does a good job as a lone striker for Brazil – and while this is true – it is a very different way of playing with one up top. For the national side, he plays as a deep-lying forward and allows the midfield runners such as Vinicius Jnr, Neymar and Raphina to run in behind and work around him.

This is why he is preferred to Gabriel Jesus, not because he is a better player, but because he has the ability to play that functional role.

Unfortunately, I do not think he has the technique, skillset or tactical nous to play this role for Tottenham – indeed, it could be argued his presence is hindering the performances of Son and Kulusevski as he is not identifying positions where they can find him, whilst also not creating space for them to exploit.

Football Attributes

So, what does Ange want from his striker in this system? A ruthless predator is key.

David was not the most prolific earlier in his career, but has consistently hit double figures for both Gent and current club Lille. Last season he scored 26 in 40 appearances across all competitions (TransferMarkt).

In the league, he netted 24 times with an xG of 23.96 (SofaScore). He scored 6 with his left and 17 with his right – which is essential in this Spurs team, when he can be expecting balls in from both flanks.

One caveat that has to be acknowledged is that ten of these goals were penalties (he missed one), which does ‘plump the data’ somewhat – but also gives us a potential new penalty taker.

He is also a fierce presser of the ball with Ange looking to win the ball back as fast as possible, he would suit this role to perfection.

He is also able to drop in to link the play and allow other players to attack (see positional sense section below). He is also incredibly fast, especially over those first few yards, which will allow him to find that space in the box to latch on to crosses and cutbacks.

Positional sense

At Celtic, Postecoglou expected his striker, Kyogo, to basically wait in the box until a chance arrived and then snap it up. It worked a treat.

However, with wide forwards such as Kulusevski and Son, who have an abundance of talent, the role of the central striker has changed.

There is a need for the striker to be involved in the build-up play and facilitate the wide men so they can be more of a goal threat as well.

The problem for Richarlison here is two-fold. Firstly, when he was a part of the build-up play for Everton, he operated predominantly on the left-hand side of the pitch.

Based on the graphic below, he will not be able to work in these positions under the Postecoglou formation because it is covered by a combination of predominantly Maddison and Son.

Graphics courtesy of (Sofascore).

You can see from the heat map above that Jonathan David would be more adept at working on the right-hand side of the pitch – in tandem with Kulusevski, Sarr and whichever full-back is selected.

You can also see from David’s graphic that he likes to operate within the penalty box – just like Kyogo did under Ange at Celtic.

His Footballing Journey

One of the other strikers Tottenham have been linked with recently is Gift Orban. The Nigerian is currently plying his trade in the Belgian top division and a concern I have is that the step up to the Premier League is vast.

Admittedly, his statistics are quite frankly mind-boggling but converting that would be extremely difficult and definitely a risk. Against West Ham last season, he failed to score and looked exciting in bursts rather than consistently in an overall performance.

Jonathan David also started his European journey in Belgium, playing, like Orban, at Gent, before being transferred to Lille in France – a notable step up, where he took time to adapt before finding consistent form.

When Postecoglou signed Vicario, he stated that he respected his footballing pathway (football.london) to the top.

Incidentally, David’s journey is somewhat similar to that of Postecoglou, starting in Canada, a country more associated with ice hockey than ‘soccer’ before moving to Europe.

I think Ange will resonate with this and see in him someone who has had to work hard to take those steps and being challenged to perform at every level.

Personality

There is no doubt that Jonathan David will command a huge transfer fee. He is valued at around £50 million and there has been interest from Real Madrid earlier this summer (although possibly as a pawn in the ongoing game that is Kylian Mbappe) (Transfermarkt).

Add to this Tottenham’s receipt of close to £100m, their need for a top-class forward and the alarming proximity to the transfer window ‘slamming shut’ (nobody gently closes it) – and Lille can inflate that number to possibly as high as £70-80m.

Not naming names, but Tottenham have been stung by huge transfer fees in the past, and to spend this money they will have to do their due diligence on the player and their personal attributes to ensure they have the mentality to play for Tottenham.

A quick Google search of ‘Jonathan David Scandal’ revealed nothing, but certain decisions in his life point towards him being a level-headed and driven individual.

As a youngster in Canada (having grown up in Haiti), David could have joined professional side Vancouver Whitecaps (First Time Finish). However, his mother was adamant that his education came first. Such level-headedness and determination to make the correct decision speaks volumes for both him and his mother.

Once he had made the decision to turn professional and had spent a couple of seasons at Gent, he was signed by Lille to replace outgoing superstar Victor Osimhen (does this situation sound familiar?).

The weight of expectation was immense and despite a slowish start to life in Ligue 1, David has become a more than able replacement (Breaking The Lines).

Whoever, comes in at Tottenham will have to live with the burden of being ‘the next striker after Kane’. I do not think Richarlison has coped with it, but David has proved once before that following a club icon is something that will not phase him.

Since his move to France, there has been interest in the forward from England, with both Arsenal and Chelsea signalling that he could be a potential signing (football.london).

However, the Canadian rejected the move, which would have significantly improved his wages, to focus on his development and ensuring regular game time, thus indicating that he is incredibly professional and also that his agent has his best interests at heart.

Verdict

There is definitely interest from the club in the Canadian superstar (FourFourTwo) and I have (as I tend to do when writing these articles) thoroughly convinced myself that he can be the key to unlocking Tottenham’s full potential in the front line.

Over the years, Lille have delivered talent to the Premier League almost on a conveyor belt: Hazard, Cabaye, Gabriel, Botman (not to mention other stars such as Rafa Leao, Victor Osimhen and Benjamin Pavard).

It’s time to get that conveyor belt rolling again, to deliver a Canadian to N17.

Fabrizio Romano has said that it would prove quite difficult for Tottenham to lure Jonathan David from Lille, not only because of the striker’s price but also because the Ligue 1 club would need to find a replacement for their star man.

It has been widely reported over the last few days that David is one of the names on top of Spurs’ wishlist to replace Harry Kane, alongside Gent’s Gift Orban (Rudy Galetti – GMS).

Despite being just 23 years of age, it feels like the Lille star has already been around for a long time as he first burst onto the scene as a teenager in the Belgian top flight before subsequently making a name for himself in France.

It will be difficult for Spurs to sign Jonathan David

The Canadian international, who scored 26 goals in 40 appearances last season, now looks ready to make the step up to a top club, and Romano has now confirmed that Spurs have been tracking the player for a long time.

However, the journalist insisted that Lille will demand €60m (£51.4m) for the centre-forward and might not want to let him go so late in the transfer window as there is barely any time to bring in a replacement.

Romano told GiveMeSport: “Jonathan David is a player they’ve (Spurs) been tracking for a long time, but it’s a complicated one because of the price. I’m hearing that Lille want something around €60m.

“They started from €65m but that now could be around €60m to sell Jonathan David, but also, they would need a replacement. So, in this case, timing is crucial, and it’s not going to be an easy one.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is a little worrying that Tottenham are still struggling to get their unwanted players out of the door. The North London club will be in trouble if Gent and Lille decide to considerably raise their demands for Orban and David respectively in the final few days of the transfer window.

Journalist Rudy Galetti has said that Lille’s Jonathan David remains right at the top of Tottenham’s wishlist to replace Harry Kane, alongside Gent’s Gift Orban.

There has been an unending amount of speculation linking Orban with a move to Tottenham over recent weeks (Fabrizio Romano – ThatsFootballTV) but over the last few days, some outlets have suggested that a move for the striker might not prove straightforward.

Both Voetbalkrant and De Morgen reported earlier this week that Tottenham are not prepared to meet Gent’s €30m (£25.5m) asking price for the 21-year-old, with the former suggesting that the likes of Fulham and Lille are also circling over the youngster.

Jonathan David is also at the top of Spurs’ list

Galetti has now said that while Spurs continue to have an eye on Orban, the North London club like David just as much as the Nigerian.

The journalist claims that the club have followed the Canadian international, who scored 26 goals in 40 appearances last season for Lille, for a ‘long time’.

Galetti told GiveMeSport: “Tottenham in this moment are more focused on the exit market, but speaking about incomings, a possible incoming move for sure to find the replacement for Harry Kane is a task with a top priority.

“Together with Orban as told before, the other name at the top of their list, followed for a long time is David.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do think Tottenham will get a deal for Orban over the line once a few of their unwanted players leave over the coming days. However, Spurs will not want to be held to ransom by Gent, which is why they will have identified other alternatives, including David.

Fabrizio Romano claims Tottenham are currently looking at Gift Orban and Jonathan David as potential striker options now that Harry Kane has left North London.

The Italian journalist says Spurs are on the lookout for a new forward but they want the right profile of player, rather than being pressured into signing a Kane replacement.

Orban is said to be seen as ‘an opportunity’ for the Lilywhites and Daniel Levy and co are already familiar with the conditions of a potential deal, even if they have not yet sent a bid.

Jonathan David, meanwhile, is also on Tottenham’s radar, although he is deemed too expensive at this moment in time because of his £51m price tag.

David has repeatedly been linked with Spurs over recent weeks (Gazzetta dello Sport via Sport Witness) and is allegedly the man Fabio Paratici wanted to sign as Kane’s successor (Ben Jacobs).

Meanwhile, Gift Orban is said to prefer a move to Lille, ironically Jonathan David’s club, because he is not happy with the prospect of being second choice in N17 (DeMorgen).

Fabrizio Romano says Spurs like Orban and David

Fabrizio said (via ThatsFootballTV): “They (Spurs) could sign a new striker, the idea is to sign a new striker but they want the right player, at the right price, not to spend money on a player they don’t trust 100%. They are discussing also with Postecoglou about that.

“Gift Orban remains an opportunity, he is one of the names they are considering and they know the conditions of the deal but have not sent an official bid at the moment.

“Another player Tottenham really appreciate is Jonathan David from Lille. However, at the moment, David is considered too expensive as Lille will demand €60m.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Gift Orban seems like the kind of player we have seen down the years where Spurs don’t take a punt on him, then he’s suddenly worth £100m in a few years. Look at James Maddison, Jarrod Bowen, Eberechi Eze, etc.

The Canadian international, who found the back of the net 26 times across all competitions last season, looks ready to make a big move, and it was even asserted by Rudy Galetti recently that he is one of the strikers at the top of the North London club’s wishlist.

The Italian journalist added that Tottenham would have to stump up a fee of around €50m-€60m (£42.9m- £51.7m) to prise the striker away from Stade Pierre Mauroy this summer.

Jonathan David was Paratici’s Kane replacement

Jacobs has now asserted that David might have been Spurs’ top choice to replace Kane had Fabio Paratici still been at the club.

Then journalist told The Daily Briefing: “Before Fabio Paratici left Spurs, the most likely target, if Kane left, was Lille’s Jonathan David. An approach still can’t be ruled out.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We know that Paratici is still very much working for Tottenham in an advisory role, which is perhaps why the club remain interested in David. However, all indications over the past few days suggest that Spurs are prioritising a move for Gent’s Gift Orban this summer.

Italian journalist Rudy Galetti has claimed that Jonathan David is Tottenham’s ‘top target’ to replace Harry Kane if the striker leaves North London.

Recent reports had suggested that Bayern Munich’s latest offer came to €100m (£86.3m) for Kane and the Bavarian were said to be optimistic about their chances of getting the deal over the line (Fabrizio Romano – YouTube).

Unfortunately for them, The Athletic revealed today that the bid was rejected by Tottenham.

Ange Postecoglou admitted on Sunday that the club have made contingency plans in the event that the 30-year-old ends up departing (Football.London).

The print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (01/08/23 as relayed by Sport Witness) reported last week that Spurs are ready to make a move for David if Kane does leave.

The report claimed that the Lilywhites hold a ‘strong interest’ in the Lille striker, who found the back of the net 26 times across all competitions last season.

David is now Spurs’ top target if Kane leaves

Galetti has now taken to social media to assert that the Canadian international is at the top of Tottenham’s wishlist to replace Kane.

The journalist stated that Lille would evaluate offers in the region of €50m-€60m (£42.9m- £51.7m) range for David, and added that the situation is now ‘evolving’.

Spurs Web Opinion

David has quite similar characteristics to Richarlison and could serve as useful competition for the Brazilian.

With Tottenham now on the verge of completing the signing of Alejo Veliz, who has the characteristics of a traditional number nine, the club might be leaning towards David over someone like Dusan Vlahovic.

However, with the rejected bid today, it perhaps seems slightly more unlikely that Kane will leave at all now. Too early to celebrate just yet though.

According to the print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (01/08/23 as relayed by Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur are now ready to push ahead with a move for Lille’s Jonathan David if and when Harry Kane seals a switch to Bayern Munich.

Even though Bayern Munich have not yet met Tottenham’s valuation of Kane, reports indicate that the Bundesliga side are optimistic that they can strike a deal with the North London club for the England captain (Fabrizio Romano).

Bayern reportedly submitted a fresh bid of over £100m for Kane this week (ESPN), including potential add-ons, and the German club gave Spurs a deadline to accept or reject (Telegraph).

Tottenham have been linked with a whole host of potential replacements, including David, with journalist Rudy Galetti saying last week (GiveMeSport) that the Lilywhites had turned their attention to the Canadian striker, who found the back of the net 26 times across all competitions last season.

Galetti added that the Lille star is valued at €50m to €55m (£43.1m-£47.5m) and Spurs could now begin exploring the deal ‘in more detail’ over the coming days.

Spurs ready to move for Jonathan David if Kane goes

Gazzetta have now stated that Tottenham hold a ‘strong’ interest in David and are ‘ready to reinvest’ the money they receive for Kane in the Lille star.

However, the report asserts that Bayern would first need to finalise an agreement with Daniel Levy for the England captain before the Lilywhites decide to push ahead with a move for the former Gent man.

Spurs Web Opinion

David is a perfect fit for Postecoglou’s style of play and has quite similar characteristics to Ricahrlison. I would be surprised if Ange prefers to sign the Canadian as Kane’s replacement over the likes of Dusan Vlahovic.

David now Tottenham’s top striker target

If Gazetta’s latest update is to be believed, David is not only ‘followed’ by Spurs but has also moved to the ‘top of their list’.

However, it is explained that Tottenham are not the only club after the 23-year-old, with Paris Saint-Germain also said to be eyeing the Lille star after missing out on Rasmus Hojlund.

In addition, Inter Milan are also thought to have their eye on David, who is currently valued by the French club at €50m (£42.9m), although it is suggested that the price could potentially fall to €40m (£34.3m) in August.

Spurs Web Opinion

David is a very good fit for Postecoglou’s system, given his proficiency in pressing and his ability to make runs in behind the opposition backline.

The Canadian is also a much more realistic target than the likes of Randal Kolo Muani and would offer Richarlison competition for his place in the side.

Italian journalist Rudy Galetti has claimed that Tottenham could turn their attention to Lille striker Jonathan David amidst the growing speculation over Harry Kane’s future.

Kane now seems more likely to leave Tottenham this summer than not, with multiple outlets reporting over the weekend that the North London club’s majority owner, Joe Lewis, has informed Daniel Levy that the striker will have to be sold if he does not sign a new contract (Daily Mail).

Unsurprisingly, Spurs have been linked with a whole host of centre-forwards over the last week, including the likes of Juventus‘ Dusan Vlahovic (SportMediaSet), Eintracht Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani (RMC Sport) and even Brentford’s Ivan Toney (Football Transfers).

Jonathan David could emerge as top Spurs target

Galetti has now suggested that the Lilywhites could now turn their attention to David, who has continued improving steadily since his switch to Lille three years ago.

The journalist adds that the Canadian international, who found the back of the net 26 times across all competitions last season, is expected to cost around €50m to €55m (£43.1m-£47.5m).

Galetti told GiveMeSport: “Jonathan David, the Canadian player, is considered a really good option with a fair price set at around €50m to €55m.

“Tottenham would like to keep Kane, but David represents a valid alternative, who in the next days, will be explored in more detail.”

Spurs Web Opinion

David is an excellent fit for Postecoglou as he is extremely aggressive and energetic both on and off the ball and is capable of stretching the opposition’s backline by making runs in behind.

While £45m is a steep asking price, there are no doubts about the 23-year-old’s goalscoring prowess, and he is someone who is clearly on the up as a player.

L’Equipe have reported that Tottenham are keeping an eye on Lille striker, Jonathan David, in case they have to look for a Harry Kane replacement at some point this summer (14/07/23 – as relayed by SportWitness).

It is said that David has admirers at plenty of big European clubs at the moment, including Spurs, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Newcastle and Paris Saint-Germain.

Spurs would have to pay big to sign Jonathan David

Lille have reportedly set their price at £51.5m for the Canadian forward and were hoping that someone would come in at that level, although the striker merry-go-round has not quite started yet this summer.

Of course, if Harry Kane was to secure a Tottenham exit in the next month, that could all change.

Jonathan David scored 26 and assisted another four in 40 games across all competitions last season, while also featuring for Canada in the World Cup (TransferMarkt).

Ben Jacobs also reported recently that Spurs had looked at the French league striker in the past.

Spurs Web Opinion:

I suspect that if Tottenham were to sell Harry Kane, they would go for someone like David who could bring something a little different – high press and high energy.

There is no point trying to sign a like-for-like Kane replacement, because there literally isn’t one. Best to sign someone more in the Ange Postecoglou mould if it comes to that.

The forward finished the 2022-23 campaign with 30 goal contributions across all competitions (26 goals and four assists), and it has now emerged that his displays have caught the attention of several of Europe’s big hitters.

Tottenham have looked at Jonathan David in the past

Jacobs revealed that David has been of interest to Tottenham in the past but he added that Harry Kane is expected to remain at the North London club in the summer.

He also named Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal as clubs who have eyed the Canadian international in the past but insisted that they do not see him as a priority this transfer window.

The journalist revealed that Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli are tracking David this summer while also adding that West Ham United are one to watch in the race for the 23-year-old.

Spurs Web Opinion

With Kane now looking likely to stay and Richarlison more than capable of covering for the number nine role, it seems pretty clear that Spurs would prioritise signing wide-forwards this summer.

So, that rules out any move for David, who can only operate as a centre-forward or a second striker.

The Canadian international has scored 23 times so far this season across all competitions and is currently just one goal behind Kylian Mbappe in the race for the Ligue 1 Golden Boot (SuperSport).

L’Equipe have now claimed that this is likely to be David’s last season at Stade Pierre Mauroy despite him being contracted to Lille until 2025.

The publication states that there is no shortage of interest in the 23-year-old’s services ahead of the summer transfer window, with Tottenham being named as one of the clubs said to be exploring a move for the striker.

The report adds that Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and Bayern Munich also have their eye on David, who is valued by Lille at around €65m (£57m).

Spurs Web Opinion

Although David can operate as a number ten, he is most effective while playing as a centre-forward.

He is not someone who can do a job out wide, which is why the only way it would make sense for Spurs to make a move for the 23-year-old is if Harry Kane departs the club this summer.

Calcio Mercato News have revealed that Juventus are set to target rumoured Tottenham target, Jonathan David, as a replacement for Dusan Vlahovic.

Serbian publication Nova Sport revealed a few days ago that Juventus might be forced to sell Vlahovic in January amidst allegations of false financial reports and secret salary payments.

Interestingly, the report named Spurs as one of the potential destinations for the former Fiorentina man, who was also said to be of interest to the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid.

Calcio Mercato News have now backed up that claim, stating that the Old Lady would be willing to cash in on Vlahvoic for a fee of around €80m-€90m (£69.8m-£78.5m).

The report adds that Juve could, in turn, make a move for another Spurs target in David as a replacement for Vlahovic.

The Canadian striker has been on fire in front of goal for Lille over the last 18 months, with Todofichajes reporting earlier this month that Tottenham sent scouts to watch him in action at the World Cup.

According to Calcio Mercato News, Juve could be ready to pay a fee of around €45m-€50m (£39.2m-£43.6m) for David, which the report states that Lille would not be able to turn down.

Spurs Web Opinion

I cannot see Tottenham making a move for either Vlahovic or David in  January as a centre-forward is not likely to be one of Conte’s priorities. The Spurs boss will likely want a natural winger, who is adept at carrying the ball as cover for Dejan Kulusevski.

Speaking to The Sun a few days ago, the Canadian international admitted his desire to play in the Premier League.

CalcioMercato have now claimed that David is one of four names on Arsenal’s shortlist for a centre-forward in January, with Mikel Arteta’s men said to be prioritising signing a number nine after the injury to Gabriel Jesus.

The report adds that the Gunners could be set for a ‘heated’ battle with Spurs, who are also said to be ‘very interested’ in the 22-year-old.

Apart from David, CalcioMercato add that Ajax’s Cody Gapko, Roma’s Tammy Abraham and Juventus’ Dusan Vlahvoic are the other options on Arsenal’s radar.

Interestingly, Gapko (GiveMeSport) and Vlahovic (CMW.it) have both been also been mooted as potential targets for Spurs over recent months.

Spurs Web Opinion

The only person I can see Spurs pursuing from the aforementioned four-man Arsenal shortlist is Gapko. I do not think Conte will be keen on signing another out-and-out centre-forward in January, given that he has both Harry Kane and Richarlison at his disposal. Even Gapko would likely not be a good fit for what Conte is looking for as the Dutchman prefers playing on the left or through the middle rather than on the right.

Rumoured Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Jonathan David has admitted that he is open to a move to the Premier League.

Todofichajes reported last week that Tottenham are mulling over whether to make a move for the Lille striker and have been watching him in action for Canada at the World Cup.

The 22-year-old headed into the tournament having scored nine goals in fifteen appearances in Ligue 1 so far this season (transfermarkt) but failed to find the back of the net in Qatar after Canada finished bottom of Group F without a victory to their name.

David admitted that the Premier League is the best domestic competition in the world and has ambitions of playing in England ‘some day’ in the future.

GiveMeSport claimed last month that along with Tottenham, Arsenal and Everton are both also keen on the forward.

David told The Sun: “The Premier League is the best league in the world and every player would want to play there some day.

“I have been focused on trying to enjoy the World Cup and enjoy the moment. What happens now I do not know, we will see.”

Tottenham’s priority has to be Harry Kane’s contractual situation, however, the club will be shrewd enough to have other attacking options lined up for the future should the England captain decide against putting pen to paper on a new deal.

The 22-year-old has continued banging in goals with regularity since his switch to France and has been in excellent form this season, having scored nine goals and provided three assists in his 15 Ligue 1 appearances so far (Transfermarkt).

David has not found the back of the net in Canada’s two matches at the World Cup so far, with the North American side crashing out of the tournament after defeats to Belgium and Croatia.

Todofichajes state that scouts from Tottenham have ‘carefully observed’ the striker in the two matches in Qatar.

It is alleged that Antonio Conte is keen on adding to his forward line despite the options he has at his disposal, perhaps due to a potential concern that Harry Kane’s days at the club might be numbered.

The publication asserts that David is ‘one of the options’ on the North London club’s radar.

Spurs Web Opinion

Another centre-forward is arguably the last thing that Tottenham need in January, with Richarlison more than capable of covering for Kane.  I believe Conte will want a winger who is good at carrying the ball as a potential backup for Kulusevski as we really missed the penetration that the Swede provides when he was out injured.

GiveMeSport have claimed that Tottenham are one of several Premier League clubs eyeing a move for Lille striker Jonathan David ahead of the January transfer window.

David first burst onto the scene at Genk as a teenager and the forward’s reputation has continued to blossom since his move to Lille in the summer of 2020.

The 23-year-old is on course to have his most productive season in front of goal since his switch to France, having scored nine times and provided three assists so far this season (Transfermarkt).

GiveMeSport claim that David is on the radars of several Premier League clubs, namely Spurs, Everton, Arsenal and Manchester United. The report asserts that the Red Devils could make a move for the Canadian international in January since they are on the lookout for a striker.

It is alleged that Lille’s asking price for David could go beyond the £40m figure that is being currently mooted if he does well at the World Cup in Qatar.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not expect Tottenham to be in the market for a centre-forward in January as Richarlison can be used centrally if Harry Kane needs a rest. I think Conte will be keen on adding another winger to the squad instead, particularly if Bryan Gil is loaned out, which I expect to happen.
