Rennes manager Bruno Genesio has revealed that Djed Spence has picked up an injury which has ruled him out of action for the rest of the season.

After failing to get a single start at Tottenham during the first half of the campaign, Spence got a new lease of life after his loan move to Rennes in January.

The 22-year-old got a run of consecutive starts under his belt and showcased the sort of attacking flair that we saw from his during his spell at Nottingham Forest last season.

However, since the international break in March, the youngster has registered just seven minutes of action as first-choice right-back Hamari Traore regained fitness to take his place in the starting eleven.

The on-loan Tottenham man has even missed out on the matchday squad on a couple of occasions recently and it has now been confirmed that his spell in France has come to a premature end, with Genesio revealing that he will return to North London to continue his rehabilitation.

The Rennes head coach told Ouest-France about Spence: “He is out until the end of the season.

“It’s more than a sprain…. He will also return to Tottenham to take care of himself.”

After an extremely promising start, Spence’s loan spell at Rennes has not ended in ideal fashion.

While the right-back might be hoping to make a good impression on Spurs’ new manager in pre-season, it looks quite likely that the 22-year-old would be loaned out again by the club next season.
