Even though Spurs did not manage to offload Ndombele before the European transfer window closed, they managed to do so last week since Turkish clubs were allowed to sign players for a while longer.

The Frenchman ended up joining Galatasaray on a season-long loan deal with the Istanbul side having the option to make the deal permanent for £13m.

Tanguy Ndombele rejected a late move to Genoa

La Repubblica have now explained the circumstances of Genoa’s failed late bid for Ndombele, revealing that the Serie A side were ‘one step away’ from landing the 26-year-old.

It is explained that the club first enquired about Pape Sarr but after Spurs told them that the Senegalese starlet was not for sale, they started conversations over the former Lyon man.

The report alleges that Genoa even had a private plane ready to bring Ndombele to Italy as soon as possible so that the deal could be completed before the deadline.

However, the publication asserts that the Spurs star cancelled the deal ‘at the last minute’, telling the Rossoblu: “You are a newly promoted club, I want to make the Champions League.”

Ndombele appears to have got his wish as Galatasaray have made it to the group stages of the Champions League. However, with Bayern and Man Utd in their group, the on-loan Tottenham man is only likely to play a few games in the competition.

I personally feel that joining Genoa and performing in the Serie A consistently would have done a lot more for the Frenchman’s career as it would brought him to the attention of some top clubs.

On Wednesday morning, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Genoa had struck an agreement with Spurs to sign Ndombele on loan, with the journalist adding that the Serie A club were working on convincing the player to make the move.

The journalist claims that Genoa have reached a full agreement with Spurs and are now working on convincing the player to move to the Luigi Ferraris Stadium.

Romano adds that Tottenham want to find a new club for Ndombele before Friday evening’s deadline but the decision ultimately lies in the former Lyon star’s hands.

It would be a shame if it is another loan deal without an obligation to buy as Spurs would have been keen to cut their losses on the France international and get him off their wage bill.

However, the player would have to accept a significant salary reduction to seal a permanent move away from the Premier League side.

After struggling for game time in his loan spells at Sampdoria and Salernitana last season, the 20-year-old is having a breakthrough season on loan at Genoa in 2022-23, having been one of the standout players in the Italian second tier this season.

Serie B News reported two months ago that Fabio Paratici has been a fan of Dragusin since his time at Juventus and was looking to bring him to Spurs in January.

It was explained that Genoa have the option to sign the Romanian permanently for €5.5m (£4.8m) plus €2m (£1.7m) in bonuses, with the Spurs managing director said to be ready to snap up the defender from the Serie B side.

Dragusin’s agent Florin Manea has now revealed that there are a growing number of suitors for his client in England and hinted that a summer move may be on the cards for the defender.

Manea told the Romanian publication Digi Sport: “There is serious interest from England in him. He’s only been at Genoa for six months. 

“Our plan is to let him play there for at least a year. We want him to play for another year in Serie A, and then we think he’ll be ready for any top club in the world. 

“The top five clubs in England are seriously watching him. But, for now, he’s doing very well at Genoa.”

However, the one concern with recruiting talented young players is that they need game time to develop and Conte does not seem too willing to give minutes to unproven players.

The playmaker plies his trade for Benfica these days, but was once tipped to have a much different career path.

Taarabt flopped at Spurs after arriving in 2007, making only nine appearances before being shipped out to QPR in 2010.

He clearly always had potential with his impressive trickery and footwork, however, he didn’t appear to have the work rate or determination to make it at the very top level.

The Moroccan told FourFourTwo magazine: “I don’t like to say this about myself, but I think if you talked to everyone who saw me when I was a young talent, many would have said I’d play for Real Madrid or Barcelona one day. Even Luka Modric said that to me once,”

“But it didn’t happen. Not only because of others, but because of me.”

The fact that a Balon D’or winner believed that Taarabt would make it to the top level shows the ability he possessed. It is ironic that it was actually Modric who ended up moving to Real Madrid and delivering on his potential.

Over the last few months, Taarabt has been rebuilding his career in Portugal. This comes after a disastrous few years that included a disappointing loan spell with Genoa in Serie B.

He has the ability to be successful in the Liga NOS, but it appears that he will never hit the level he was predicted to.

Adel Taarabt’s career should be seen as a cautionary tale for young players, much like Ravel Morrison’s. Both players had world-class potential but were never able to deliver on this. While the idea of him playing for Barcelona or Real Madrid seems ludicrous now, it was very possible and shows just how good he could have become.
