Tottenham reportedly sent Rodrigo Bentancur’s lawyers a contract with Luis Diaz’s name attached to it, according to Portuguese outlet Record.
Spurs completed the signing of Uruguay international Bentancur from Juventus on deadline day for a fee of €19 million with €6 million in add-ons (The Guardian).
The 24-year-old was one of two signings on the final day, with Spurs also securing a move for his former Juve teammate Dejan Kulusevski on an initial loan deal.
But Record claims that Tottenham’s acquisition of Bentancur wasn’t entirely smooth as they made an error with a contract when completing his transfer.
It has been suggested that Spurs sent the Uruguayan midfielder’s lawyers a document prepared for Porto winger Diaz, who snubbed a move to North London in favour of Liverpool a few days prior.
Despite the deal eventually materialising, the report states the mix-up ‘surprised’ a lot of people involved in the transaction.
Tottenham’s pursuit of Bentancur came directly after their chase for Diaz was brought to an end by Liverpool, with the player preferring a move to Jurgen Klopp’s side (The Telegraph).
Spurs allegedly agreed a deal worth £46 million (Sky Sports) but were eventually pipped to the Colombian’s signature by the Reds, who have been long-term suitors of the winger.

The transfer window in January is especially tough for the boards of clubs and it is surprising that things like this don’t happen more often. It is a fairly embarrassing gaffe on the Tottenham end though, considering these things are meant to be screened pretty thoroughly.
