Cristian Romero has admitted that losing a player of Rodrigo Bentancur’s quality is a major blow for Tottenham.
Bentancur has been one of Tottenham’s most consistent performers since arriving at the club from Juventus a little over a year ago.
The midfielder, in many ways, makes Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 system tick as not only does he possess plenty of defensive awareness but he has also been key in helping the team progress the ball to the attacking third.
In fact, one can argue that he is Spurs’ most important player after Harry Kane, which is why the news that he will not kick a ball again this season due to a ruptured ACL came as a big blow to the Lilywhites.
Tottenham can take heart from the maturity that Oliver Skipp and Pape Matar Sarr have shown against AC Milan and West Ham United but Romero admitted that it is difficult to make up for the loss of a player of Bentancur’s quality.
When asked about the Uruguayan, the centre-back told the club’s official website: “We all miss him a lot. It’s a big loss for the time being but we know the player that he is.
“Right now, it’s hard, but we’re looking forward to having him back and contributing for us again.
“We need to prepare well going forward but, in the meantime, we wish him a speedy recovery and that he’s back soon.”
Spurs Web Opinion
There is no doubt that losing Bentacnur is a massive blow but the one silver lining is that the 25-year-old’s injury has given a lifeline to Oliver Skipp.
The midfielder’s Spurs career was seemingly going nowhere but he now has the opportunity to once again showcase his skill set and I believe he could potentially end up establishing himself as a regular in the starting eleven for many years to come.
