If Di Marzio’s latest update is to be believed, Atletico are now ready to challenge the likes of Real Madrid and Spurs for Gimenez’s signature.

However, Todofichajes have now asserted that the deal to bring Hojbjerg to Atletico is now moving ‘closer to completion’.

The report states that the 28-year-old is Diego Simeone’s top choice to bolster the midfield department, with the Argentine said to see the former Saints man as ‘the necessary piece to fill in the puzzle’.

There are a couple of reasons I am quite sceptical of this report. Firstly, it has been widely reported over the last few days that the negotiations between the two parties over Hojbjerg have not progressed.

Secondly, I would be quite surprised if Spurs consider anything less than £30m for the midfielder, given that he has been a regular starter for the club since arriving from Southampton three years ago.

Now, the latest update on the situation comes from journalist Ben Jacobs, who claims there is still some distance in the respective valuations of the Dane between the two clubs, despite him having agreed personal terms with Atleti, however, talks are continuing.

I am still very much against the idea of selling Hojbjerg this summer. He is a very effective player who covers so much ground, does the dirty work, and is a fantastic leader, too.

There are plenty of other players we should be focused on selling right now. And, if Harry Kane does leave, we are going to need people like Hojbjerg to stand up and be counted, especially in an inexperienced dressing room short of leaders.

The report claims that Tottenham have rejected an offer of £16million from the Spanish side for Hojbjerg, however, it is believed that both sides will be able to reach an agreement to allow the Dane to move to La Liga.

Hojbjerg is said to be keen to wrap up a switch to Madrid where he would be able to play Champions League football and has reportedly asked Tottenham to lower their transfer demands (Mundo Deportivo).

Hojbjerg is expected to join Atletico Madrid

Tottenham have been reluctant to sanction the sale of the former midfielder but talks have continued between all sides for well over a week in order to try to reach common ground to make the transfer happen (Daily Mail).

The 27-year-old moved to North London from Southampton in August 2020 for a fee of around £15million plus bonuses (Sky Sports) and has gone on to make 145 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring 10 goals (transfermarkt).

When Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma are both fully fit, it is hard to see how Hojbjerg would oust either of them for a place in Ange Postecoglou’s starting eleven. 

His departure would also allow Pape Matar Sarr to hopefully move up the pecking order, and ideally above Oliver Skipp also.  The Senegalese has shown during pre-season that he is a raw talent and has a bright future ahead of him.

The midfielder is said to want the opportunity to move to the La Liga side, who will once again be playing Champions League football next season.  Atletico boss Diego Simeone is reported to have informed the club’s recruitment staff that he wants the Dane to bolster his midfield options ahead of the new campaign (Daily Mail).

Atletico Madrid continue talks with Spurs for Hojbjerg deal

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou is said to have a use for the 27-year-old within his squad, but ideally wants a player who is able to distribute the ball quicker and can cover larger areas of the pitch with their mobility.

Talks between both clubs need to see a compromised reached on their respective valuations of the former Southampton captain, who is also attracting interest from German clubs.

Hojbjerg joined Tottenham as one of Jose Mourinho’s first signings as head coach and has made 145 first team appearances across all competitions in his three seasons with the North Londoners.

Hojbjerg is sometimes a target of Tottenham fans over his style of play last season under Antonio Conte, however, he does have more to his game at both ends of the pitch compared to Oliver Skipp, who is still very much a work in progress

Whether Tottenham would be prepared to sanction the sale of an experienced player in Hojbjerg while Rodrigo Bentancur remains out of action until around November as he continues his recovery from knee surgery remains to be seen.

The bid reportedly totalled €20m (£17.15m), which is only just over what Spurs paid for the midfielder when he was down to the final year of his Southampton contract (SkySports).

Considering Hojbjerg was a near-everpresent in the Tottenham midfield last season across three different managers, it seems understandable why Daniel Levy would expect a return on his investment.

Hojbjerg to Atletico Madrid is heating up

It was reported by The Daily Mail this month that ‘positive developments’ had occurred in talks between Spurs and Atletico Madrid for Hojbjerg.

The Times even say that Hojbjerg has already agreed on personal terms with the La Liga outfit ahead of a potential move. 

However, the Danish midfield is said to be hoping that Spurs drop their asking price to help the transfer go through this summer (Mundo Deportivo – 24/07 as relayed by Sport Witness).

Spurs Web Opinion:

£17m for Hojbjerg is just a silly bid for Atletico Madrid to put in. Spurs are playing with a midfield three next season and would need to replace Hojbjerg if he leaves. You wouldn’t get a replacement of his quality for anywhere close to £17m. It has to be £35m-£40m or he isn’t worth selling.
