Tottenham and Newcastle could be set for disappointment when it comes to the reported pursuit of Juventus star Federico Chiesa, after it has emerged the player is braced for talks with his current club soon which could result in a new contract.

With Tottenham flying at the moment, it’s easy to forget that this is a squad which is still in need of reinforcements. Beyond the starting 11, the Lilywhites are a couple of injuries away from a potential disaster.

Ange Postecoglou will be firmly focused on the task at hand, but when the January transfer window opens, there are expected to be some moves made by the Spurs boss.

Chiesa may stay at Juventus if talks progress well

One name which has been linked with a switch to North London is that of Federico Chiesa. A report from CalcioMercatoWeb just days ago claimed both Spurs and Newcastle were keen on the Italian, and that his current club could be willing to cash in.

But, the latest report from TEAMtalk suggests quite the opposite, with Chiesa due to hold ” crunch talks” with Juventus before the winter window to discuss his future.

The meeting is set to take place in December, and “insiders are convinced that the formal talks are angled towards Chiesa staying in Italy.”

Whatever happens in that meeting, it is now thought a move in January is “unlikely,” and that any transfer is far more “plausible” for the summer, instead.

Newcastle United are said to be wary of FFP when it comes to their spending, while Spurs are not expected to “spend big” in January. Liverpool, meanwhile, are monitoring Chiesa, but would only swoop if Mo Salah were to leave.

Spurs Web Opinion

Federico Chiesa is an incredible player, and is someone I could see us signing if we finish in the top four this year. I think we would struggle to persuade him to come otherwise, but it’s exciting to consider him in Ange Postecoglou’s system.

According to CalcioMercatoWeb, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have both shown interest in signing Federico Chiesa, who Juventus are willing to cash in on.

After a terrific start to his spell in Turin following his switch from Fiorentina, Chiesa’s career has stalled a bit over the last two years due to a combination of injuries and loss of form.

CalcioMercatoWeb explain that Juve need to offload some of their big-name players, given their financial problems and their need to strengthen some areas of the pitch.

The 26-year-old, who is contracted at the Allianz Stadium until 2025, is thought to be one of the players that the Old Lady are ready to move on.

The outlet adds that the Serie A giants would be more than happy to sell the versatile attacker if they receive an offer of around €60m (£52.3m).

Spurs are Newcastle are both interested in Chiesa

It is alleged that the player is ‘very much liked’ by both Tottenham and Newcastle, who could both ‘easily have the right budget at their disposal’ to green-light the operation.

Meanwhile, TEAMtalk have asserted that along with Spurs and Newcastle, Chiesa is also admired by both Manchester United and Liverpool.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham are likely to be in the market for a wide player, given the injuries to both Solomon and Perisic. There is no doubt about Chiesa’s talent and he could potentially thrive in Postecoglou’s system. However, it would be a risk to invest a big amount in the 26-year-old, given his injury record.

Don Hutchinson believes that Kieran Trippier is currently the best right-back in the world.

Trippier spent four seasons at Spurs after joining the club from Burnley in the summer of 2015 and he developed into a top right-back during his time at the club, even winning a place in the England team.

However, he had a significant drop-off in his final season at Spurs, with his defensive mistakes costing Mauricio Pochettino’s men on several occasions.

Trippier eventually joined Atletico Madrid for just £20m (BBC) where he improved his defensive game under the tutelage of Diego Simeone, playing a valued part in the club’s title win in 2020-21.

Did Tottenham sell Kieran Trippier far too early?

The former Tottenham man has been one of the standout right-backs in the Premier League since joining Newcastle United in January of last year.

Hutchinson named the Magpies star in his Team of the Season so far, remarking that he is the best in the world in his position. He told ESPN FC: “Best right-back in world football, Trippier.”

The pundit also named three Spurs players in the eleven – James Maddison, Destiny Udogie and Micky van de Ven.

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Tripper has come on leaps and bounds over the last few years and with hindsight, we can say that Pochettino made a mistake in sanctioning the England international’s departure back in 2019.

I News have claimed that a young Hugo Lloris was recommended as a signing to Newcastle prior to his move to Tottenham Hotspur eleven years ago.

Lloris will undoubtedly go down as one of Spurs’ biggest legends of modern times, with the Frenchman undoubtedly being the best goalkeeper that Tottenham have had during the Premier League era.

The 36-year-old’s spell at the North London club has perhaps not ended the way he would have wanted, with the former Tottenham captain now simply making up the numbers in the club’s Premier League squad until he seals his departure.

However, Spurs fans will certainly look back fondly on the goalkeeper’s time at the club despite the former Lyon man not tasting silverware in N17.

Newcastle were told to sign a young Hugo Lloris

I News have now alleged that Lloris could have ended up at St James’ Park had things worked out a little differently.

The outlet states that the Magpies’ former chief scout, Graham Carr, recommended the goalkeeper to the Newcastle hierarchy when he was young, budding goalkeeper but the club decided against making a move for him.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is important for fans to remember that Lloris could have quite easily left Spurs before we peaked under Pochettino as he was one of the most highly-rated goalkeepers in the world when we were struggling as a team under AVB and Sherwood. Instead, the Frenchman showed tremendous loyalty by sticking around at Tottenham.

Football Insider have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur fought off competition from Newcastle United to sign Croatian wonderkid, Luka Vuskovic.

Spurs announced on Monday that they had reached an agreement with Hajduk Split over the transfer of the 16-year-old, who will arrive at the North London club in 2025.

The Lilywhites revealed that the young centre-back had put pen to paper on a contract in N17 that runs until 2030.

Fabrizio Romano revealed on the Here We Go podcast last week that Vuskovic was on the radar of several top European clubs, including the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City, both of whom had been trying to sign him for several months.

However, Romano explains that the teenager had his heart set on a move to Tottenham as soon as the club presented their project to him.

Newcastle were also keen on Luka Vuskovic

If Football Insider’s latest update is to be believed, Spurs also beat out Newcastle to land Vuskovic.

The report explains that the Magpies made a late move for the youngster and made contact with the player’s entourage over a potential deal.

However, the St James Park hierarchy were allegedly informed that Vuskovic had already made the decision to sign for Tottenham.

The outlet adds that the deal to bring the centre-back to Spurs is thought to be worth around £8.7m.

Spurs Web Opinion

Based on the number of top European sides who have been credited with an interest in Vuskovic, it is clear that his signing is a major coup for Tottenham.

While the 16-year-old is still raw, Spurs will be hoping that he is much closer to a finished product when he arrives at the club in 2025.

As the transfer window nears its close, Newcastle United have reportedly made a surprise approach to sign Hugo Lloris from Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long loan.

In a summer of change at Tottenham, one player has continually been linked with a move away from the club and that is Hugo Lloris. After more than a decade in North London, it appears the time has come for the Frenchman to move on.

Hugo Lloris

Lloris put in a string of poor performances in the 2022/23 campaign, and was even dropped towards the end of the season to be replaced by Fraser Forster.

Now, with the arrival of Guglielmo Vicario, Lloris has permanently been replaced as the number-one goalkeeper in the Spurs squad. In addition, new manager Ange Postecoglou has also named Heung-min Son as the club captain, ending Lloris’ eight-year run as the Spurs skipper.

Lloris recently had the chance to join Lazio, but turned down the offer as he wasn’t happy to be second-choice goalkeeper for the Italian side (L’Equipe).

Will Hugo Lloris join Newcastle?

Now, with very little time left to secure a suitable move away from Tottenham, it seems Premier League rivals Newcastle United could be an option for Lloris.

That’s according to a report from The Times, which claims the Magpies have made a late approach for the 36-year-old. The offer of a season-long loan has “come out of the blue,” and it is thought there would have been no fee involved in the proposed switch.

However, it is believed Lloris has “turned down” the opportunity to join the North East outfit.

Spurs Web Opinion

Hugo Lloris turned down the chance to be Lazio’s backup goalkeeper, and he wouldn’t have been the starting goalkeeper for Newcastle either, so it’s no surprise that he has reportedly rejected the move.

It’s looking likely Lloris will stick with Tottenham until January at least, which is not ideal for anyone really.

Game 1 – Manchester City

Spurs U21s played their first game of the PL2 season against reigning champions Manchester City. However, it didn’t take long in the game for Spurs to find their rhythm. Just six minutes into the game, Jamie Donely played a pass into Yago Santiago who drove forward, cut inside, and curled a shot into the near post, which beat the Man City keeper. (YouthFootballHighlights).

Spurs’ next opportunity came five minutes later, when Donely’s pressing paid off and he managed to get a foot to a Man City pass. This pass bobbled off Donely’s foot and landed perfectly for Jude Soonsup-Bell. With one quick motion, Soonsup-Bell fired the ball into the roof of the net, and Spurs led 2-0.

Spurs’ aggressive pursuit of goals continued but didn’t come to fruition until moments into the second half. After Nile John was dragged down, Soonsup-Bell swiftly took advantage and delivered a perfect outside-of-the-boot pass to a marauding Damola Ajayi. He then shifted the ball outside, which left the final Man City defender out of the equation, and to top it off, he slid the ball through the keeper’s legs for a nutmeg goal.

Man City then applied some pressure to the Spurs defence, but Alfie Dorrington and Brooklyn Lyons-Foster were able to make easy work of any Man City attacks, with most of Man City’s efforts nullified before a shot could be registered. Spurs goalie, Josh Keeley, was rarely tested and looked comfortable throughout the game.

Spurs once again were looking to extend their lead, and Santiago would be the one to launch and finish this attack. After a misplaced pass from the Man City midfield, they were backtracking, and Santiago took advantage of that. His pressure on the unaware ball carrier meant he was able to swiftly take possession and drive goalward.

The Man City centre-back was once again chasing back and dove in to tackle Santiago, but he was able to slow his run and watch the defender slide past. Santiago then curled an effort from a tight angle, but it was perfectly placed and beat the Man City keeper.

The final goal would come in the 71st minute when a freekick was given to Spurs. Nile John looked up and saw Rio Kyerematen running a fantastic line down the heart of the Man City defence. The perfectly weighted pass met Kyerematen with only one defender in front of him. However, there was no stopping Kyerematen, who danced his way around the lone defender and slotted it into the back of the net.

Spurs went on to win the game 5-0 in dominating fashion. Last year, the champions were easily beaten by the slightly older Spurs side, and Spurs sat at the top of the table. The whole team played flawlessly, but Soonsup-Bell and Santiago had outstanding games, and both look to be in fantastic form going into the season.

Game 2 – Newcastle United

Newcastle would be the ones to start the game strong, and their first major chance came in the 11th minute. After a low cross was played into the box, Remi Savage had a shot at Spurs goalkeeper Josh Keeley. Nevertheless, Keeley was able to make a strong save from a dangerous effort, keeping the score level (YouthFootballHighlights).

The next chance would fall to Spurs after a fast pass was fired into the feet of Soonsup-Bell, who clipped it down the line to a full-flight Santiago. This left Santiago with acres of space and the goal in sight. With his lightning-fast feet, he was able to steer clear of any danger and glide past the keeper. Santiago then coolly passed it into the unoccupied goal.

Just minutes later, Alfie Devine cut in from the left and fired a shot goalward, which narrowly missed and whistled past the inside post.

After 25 minutes of play, Spurs got another chance. Dorrington was able to work his way to the byline and deliver a pass to an unmarked Donley. This was fired wide of the target, and it was a chance that should have been claimed, but Spurs would have to keep plugging away to force more chances.

Chances did come, and 10 minutes later, Spurs found themselves with another attempt to score. Santiago had the ball played into him, he then drove inward, allowing Donely to drift outside. He then played a through ball to Donely, who had plenty of running room as the full-back had committed to Santiago. Donely opted for a quick cross to the back post, which found Soonsup-Bell, who clipped it in with an outstretched foot.

There was a scare for Spurs just before the half when Newcastle midfielder Turner Cook curled an effort that just missed the far post. This would be the last effort at goal before the halftime whistle.

Just after halftime, Santiago would continue his rich vein of form, and he took on defenders down the left flank. He was able to move around the full-back as he shifted the ball from his right foot to his left, which then powered a shot past the keeper to put Spurs 3-0 up.

Spurs once again applied more pressure to the Newcastle backline when John played a pass into Soonsup-Bell’s feet. Soonsup-Bell turned and looked to edge it to Donely, but a tackle stopped this. Nevertheless, John was there to reclaim the ball for Spurs, but instead, he opted for a first-time shot, which beat the Newcastle keeper and gave Spurs the lead 4-0.

Newcastle were eager to get back into the game, and they were crafting more and more chances. In the 67th minute, Josh Keeley had to dive full-stretch after a shot was hit cross-goal from far out.

In the 77th minute, Newcastle had a stellar chance after a lofted cross was played in from the byline. A Newcastle player was waiting for this ball to drop to his feet, and he hit it first time at goal. Despite Spurs’ effort to clear the ball, it nestled into the back of the net.

The game finished 4-1, and Spurs once again shined in a high-scoring, thrilling match. They end this weekend at the summit, with North London rivals Arsenal in second place. They face Derby in the next fixture – last season Derby picked up just 1 point in the PL2 division 2. This should be an easier fixture for Spurs considering their two previous results against top-quality opposition.

Football Insider have claimed that Newcastle United have now set their sights on Tottenham target Edmond Tapsoba.

Tapsoba has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs right from the start of the summer (GiveMeSport) but it is unclear whether the centre-back still remains on the North London club’s radar after their acquisition of Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg.

The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick told the Tottenham Way Podcast a few days ago that the Lilywhites had abandoned their pursuit of the Bayer Leverkusen star.

VELBERT, GERMANY – JULY 21: Edmond Tapsoba of Leverkusen runs with the ball during the pre-season friendly match between Bayer 04 Leverkusen and SC Paderborn at IMS Arena on July 21, 2023 in Velbert, Germany. (Photo by Christof Koepsel/Getty Images)

Newcastle now enter the race for Edmond Tapsoba

Football Insider have now suggested that even if Spurs reignite their interest in Tapsoba, they now have competition to contend with from Newcastle.

The report alleged that the Magpies are now ready to launch a move for the 24-year-old, having made the centre-back their top target.

It is alleged that the Burkina Faso international is also wanted by other clubs around Europe and is keen on leaving the BayArena before the transfer window closes.

Spurs Web Opinion

It does seem as if Tottenham have abandoned their pursuit of Tapsoba. I suspect that the club are prioritising signing a right-sided centre-back to serve as Cristian Romero’s backup, with Torino’s Perr Schuurs seemingly emerging as their top target.

Fabrizio Romano has said that Tottenham target Harvey Barnes has now agreed to join Newcastle United, with the Magpies now said to be working on selling players to make room for the Leicester City winger.

Over the last couple of weeks, multiple outlets have named Spurs as one of the clubs eyeing a move for Barnes (The Daily Mail) but over recent days, it has been suggested that the winger is now edging close to a switch to Newcastle.

We relayed an update from The Telegraph on July 7, which stated that the 25-year-old is on the verge of completing a move to St James’ Park, with the Magpies expected to soon submit an offer for the player.

Newcastle will make a move for Barnes next week

Romano has now delivered an update on Barnes’ future, explaining that negotiations between Newcastle and Leicester for the winger are expected to continue over the coming days.

However, the journalist suggested that Eddie Howe’s men might not ‘advance’ on the deal until next week as the signing would depend on potential outgoings.

Romano added that Barnes has given the green light to complete the switch to the North East.

Spurs Web Opinion

It appears as if Spurs pulled out of the race for Barnes as soon as it became clear that their pursuit of Solomon was going to prove successful.

With Solomon, Son, Kulusevski, Richarlison and Gil, Tottenham are now well-stocked with wide players.

A couple of days ago, we relayed a report from The Guardian that claimed Ange Postecoglou’s men are now ‘less likely’ to make a move for the Leicester star since they had agreed a deal to sign Manor Solomon.

The publication added that the Magpies have moved into pole position to snap up the England international.

Harvey Barnes is on his way to St James’ Park

If The Telegraph’s latest update is to be believed, Barnes is now on the verge of sealing a switch to the North East.

The report claims that Newcastle have stolen a march on their rivals and hope to agree on a deal with Leicester for the winger over the next week.

It is asserted that Eddie Howe’s men are expected to submit an offer for Barnes over the next few days, with the player keen to make the switch.

The outlet adds that the Foxes value the 25-year-old at £40m but Newcastle are hoping to conclude a deal of around £35m.

Spurs Web Opinion

Barnes is a talented player but I am pleased that we moved for Solomon instead.

The latter is more versatile and could play in either flank while the Leicester star could only be used on the left as a cover for Son.

The Israeli international is also a much more aggressive ball carrier and would thus be a more effective impact substitute than the 25-year-old.

The Athletic have claimed that Newcastle United do not consider signing an attacking midfielder to be a priority this summer, which is why they decided against pursuing a deal for James Maddison.

It was widely reported over the last couple of months that Newcastle and Spurs were both keen on landing Maddison, with some reports suggesting as recently as a couple of weeks ago that the Magpies were ahead of Tottenham in the race for the 26-year-old (CaughtOffside).

However, it was the Lilywhites who secured the England international’s services in a £40m deal after Eddie Howe’s men seemingly turned their attention to Sandro Tonali.

Newcastle did not see Maddison as a priority signing

The Athletic have now claimed that Newcastle did indeed have a ‘long-standing interest’ in Maddison but the position was not considered a priority for the club this summer.

It is explained that the Magpies have no intention of making any statement signing just for the sake of it as they are conscious of operating within the Financial Fair Play rules.

The Athletic quote an unnamed senior figure at Newcastle as saying: “We’ve said it a thousand times — financial fair play (FFP) is a restriction for us. There’s a strategy in place. It’s not random.

“We will go for big players but the price has to make sense and it’s all about what our needs are. At no point do we have the intention of making a statement signing.

“The intention is to get the right player, the right character, the right position, the right fit.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It was clear from the offset that Maddison was seen as a much more of a priority signing by Spurs and Postecoglou than he was by Newcastle.

I suspect that the Magpies were hoping that the attacking midfielder would push for a move to St James’ Park over Tottenham, thus making a deal easier for them to do.

However, the player seemingly preferred a switch to N17.

The Telegraph have revealed that Newcastle United could explore a loan deal for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who has been mooted as a target for Tottenham over recent weeks.

Tottenham’s interest in Gallagher came to light last month when Football.London reported that the Lilywhites could use the 23-year-old’s desire to remain in London to their advantage and get a deal over the line.

This was followed up by an update on The Athletic’s live transfer blog (16/06, 3 pm), which suggested that Spurs were battling Brighton and West Ham for the England international’s signature.

However, with Ange Postecoglou’s men having now secured the services of James Maddison from Leicester City, it is unclear whether the Chelsea star is still on their radar.

Newcastle enter the picture for Conor Gallagher

The Telegraph have now revealed that Newcastle could now look to make a move for Gallagher, with the Magpies said to be looking for further reinforcements in the middle of the park.

The report states that Eddie Howe’s men have spent the bulk of their transfer budget on Sandro Tonali and are thus likely to explore a loan move for the Chelsea youngster.

However, the outlet adds that the Blues may snub Newcastle’s approach as Mauricio Pochettino wants to give Gallagher a fresh chance to prove himself at Stamford Bridge.

Spurs Web Opinion

Unless Postecoglou decides that one of Ndombele or Lo Celso can have a role to play next season, Tottenham would need to sign another attacking midfielder this summer, given how crucial a number eight is to the Australian’s system.

Perhaps we will see Spurs going for a young, up-and-coming talent such as Alex Scott.

The Guardian have revealed that Newcastle United have now emerged as the frontrunner to sign rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target Harvey Barnes.

It has been widely reported over the last few weeks that Tottenham, who signed James Maddison from Leicester City recently, also have their eye on Barnes (Sami Mokbel – Last Word on Spurs).

Earlier this week, we relayed a report from The Daily Mail which suggested that Spurs, Aston Villa and West Ham had all enquired about the winger’s availability but they now face a challenge from Newcastle, who have reignited their interest in the 25-year-old.

Harvey Barnes of Leicester City

Barnes no longer a priority for Tottenham

It has now been reported by The Guardian that North Londoners are ‘less likely’ to move for Barnes this summer since Tottenham are close to completing a deal for Manor Solomon.

The report claims that Newcastle have now moved into pole position to snap up the Leicester star since Magpies boss Eddie Howe is keen on adding reinforcements out wide.

The outlet adds that West Ham continues to be on Barnes’ trail, with the Hammers backed to spend some of the fee they will receive from Declan Rice’s sale to strengthen their attack.

Spurs Web Opinion

Solomon is a much better squad option than Barnes as the Israeli winger can play on either flank, which means he can cover for both Son and Kulusevski.

The 23-year-old is also a much more aggressive and confident ball carrier than the Leicester man, which makes him a very useful impact substitute to bring on.

Footballing legend Gheorghe Hagi has been discussing the opportunities he was offered in his career, and revealed he turned down a ‘really good’ offer to play for Tottenham Hotspur in 1994.

Hagi, a Romanian international, is widely regarded as the finest player to herald from his country.

The skilful midfielder enjoyed a successful career across Europe, spending time at big clubs including Real Madrid and Barcelona.

A highly decorated player, including seven Romanian Player of the Year awards, you would think Hagi can have little to regret during his playing days.

However, the 58-year-old never played in the Premier League, despite having plenty of chances to do so.

Things never quite worked out for him to make that move, and it sounds like he wishes he had taken up the opportunity when it presented itself.

Hagi chose Barcelona over Tottenham Hotspur

In an interview with FourFourTwo, Gheorghe Hagi revealed the nature of the offer from Tottenham back in 1994, and why he had to turn that transfer down.

He also explains how difficult it was to reject Kevin Keegan when he was approached by Newcastle.

Hagi said: “I liked Kevin Keegan a lot as a kid – he was one of my idols, too – so I would have loved to play under him at Newcastle, but it didn’t quite happen.

“Tottenham also came with an offer that was really good, but the money didn’t matter so much – when Cruyff calls you in person and asks you to go to Barcelona, it’s hard to say no.

“It would have been great to play in the Premier League, but it probably wasn’t meant to be. I’m sorry it didn’t happen. I believe fans would have enjoyed my style.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Any team would have been improved by the presence of Gheorghe Hagi back in the day, and it’s a shame we couldn’t have enticed him to White Hart Lane.

It would have been great to see the Romanian in the Premier League.

Journalist Michael Bridge has said on Sky Sports (Football Daily) that Newcastle United have identified RB Leipzig’s Dominik Szoboszlai as a potential alternative for Tottenham target James Maddison.

Over the past couple of days, we have released multiple reports (including from The Guardian and The Daily Mail) which have claimed that Newcastle are focused on getting a deal for AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali over the line, which might be a boost to Tottenham’s pursuit of Maddison.

James Maddison

The reports suggested that the route might open up for Spurs to sign the Leicester star, with the Lilywhites backed to make an offer for the 26-year-old.

Newcastle have Maddison back-up plans in place

Bridge has now revealed that Newcastle are on the verge of signing Tonali and are expected to confirm his capture early next week.

The journalist added that while this does not rule out a move for Maddison, the Magpies have also identified other alternatives, one of them being Szoboszlai.

Spurs Web Opinion

If Newcastle do turn their attention to other alternatives, that would strengthen Tottenham’s negotiating position and perhaps put pressure on Leicester to lower their demands for Maddison.

Unless the Foxes bring their asking price for the 26-year-old down to around £40m, I can see Spurs walking away from the deal.

Contrary to what has been reported by other outlets over recent days, Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett expects James Maddison to end up at Newcastle United as the Magpies are more likely to meet the midfielder’s wage demands than Tottenham are.

Multiple outlets over the last few days have talked up Tottenham’s chances of beating Newcastle to Maddison’s signature.

James Maddison

(Photo by James Williamson – AMA/Getty Images)

This includes an update from The Northern Echo (Monday, 19 June), which claim the 26-year-old prefers the idea of living in London to the North East while the Lilywhites are also willing to offer him a much higher salary than Eddie Howe’s men are.

Meanwhile, The Daily Mail subsequently reported on Tuesday that the talk around the England camp is that Maddison prefers joining Ange Postecoglou’s men over other suitors.

Journalist predicts Newcastle move for Maddison

However, Dorsett has now claimed that he believes the Magpies are going to pay the fee and offer the sort of contract necessary to take the 26-year-old to St James’ Park.

The journalist told Sky Sports (Football Daily): “Leicester are likely to want in excess of £60 million for James Maddison.

“Don’t expect them to sell for any less than £50 million. I think it would be a much higher figure if he had longer left on his contract.

“He has one year left on his existing contract, which leaves Leicester in a bit of a tricky situation in regards to him because most agents and clubs you speak to will tell you that James Maddison is probably worth more than £50 million.

“But with a year left on his contract, it brings his value right down.

“We know that Spurs and Newcastle are interested, but there may be more when time passes – it’s pretty clear that Maddison will move if the money is right. Leicester pay big salaries.

“These players we are talking about, with Maddison at the tip of the iceberg, are on big money, so if they go somewhere else, then they are going to expect at least the same. Who can expect to pay that sort of money?

“I don’t think Spurs would want to pay the salary that James Maddison would want.

“It does come back to Newcastle, I have just got this sneaking suspicion that Newcastle will come in for him, be prepared to pay the money because he is somebody in a position that they haven’t got – if you have my gut feeling, it’s Newcastle.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I think Tottenham are reasonably confident that they would get the Maddison deal over the line as they do not seem to be in talks to sign any other attacking midfielder.

We will get some clarity before the end of this week on whether the player is more likely to end up at Newcastle or Spurs, with both teams seemingly wanting to get the deal over the line before the start of pre-season.

One area in particular that the Lilywhites are lacking is creativity in midfield. Leicester City’s James Maddison has long been mooted as a solution to that problem.

The 26-year-old is thought to be a ‘priority target’ for Postecoglou this summer (Football.London). Spurs are likely to face competition from Newcastle United in the hunt for Maddison (Sky Sports).

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham submitted a double bid for both Maddison and Harvey Barnes worth a reported £50 million.

Whether that is true or not, it seems Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is not pushing for the signing of Maddison as much as first thought.

Levy told Jordan that Spurs are not in for Maddison

Speaking to talkSPORT, Simon Jordan gave his own opinion on Maddison as a player, and discussed Levy’s stance on the transfer saga.

He said: “I think he is a decent player, a good player. I don’t think he is the player people quite think he is. But I have sat across from Danny [Murphy] and Graeme Souness, who have both been top midfielders, and they think he is ‘top-draw’.

“With that in mind, I don’t push back against the notion that [Maddison] is a top-draw player.

“He has an embarrassment of riches, if both [Tottenham and Newcastle] are in for him, and according to Daniel Levy they weren’t in for James Maddison.”

Jordan was asked if Levy said that to him, and the pundit nodded his head and simply replied: “Yes, certainly on the level that was reported in the media, anyway.

“If [Spurs and Newcastle do want Maddison], then you’ve got two managers [Postecoglou and Howe] that I think are good managers to play for.

“One has got a toxic fanbase and needs a rebuild, while the other is in really good nick. I think either one of those clubs is a really good fit for James, and I think Tottenham is where he lands.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham always seem to surprise me in the transfer market – not always in a good way – and I am starting to think that these James Maddison links may end up coming to nothing this summer. I hope I’m wrong, though, as I’d love to see him at Spurs.

The Daily Mail have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are gaining in confidence that they will win the race for James Maddison as Newcastle are focused on other targets.

We previously relayed a report from The Guardian, which claimed that Newcastle are prioritising a deal for AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali, with the Magpies said to be close to concluding a transfer worth €70m (£60.2m) plus add-ons for Italy international.

James Maddison

(Photo by James Williamson – AMA/Getty Images)

With Eddie Howe’s men focused on a deal for the 23-year-old, it was explained that the path could clear for Spurs to snap up Maddison, with the publication asserting that the North London club are expected to launch an offer for the England star.

Spurs are gaining confidence in the Maddison race

The same information has now been backed up by The Mail, who state that Howe has identified Tonali as his ‘top summer target’.

It is revealed that even though the Foxes turned down Tottenham’s joint £50m bid for Maddison and Harvey Barnes last week, the Lilywhites are now gaining confidence that they will get a deal for the 26-year-old over the line.

Spurs Web Opinion

I suspect that Postecoglou would have asked the Tottenham hierarchy to sign an attacking midfielder before the start of pre-season.

So, just as with their Raya pursuit, Spurs might not hesitate to swiftly turn their attention to other alternatives should Leicester City be reluctant to lower their valuation of the England international.

Should Newcastle get the deal for the Italy international over the line, it could potentially end their pursuit of the Leicester City star.

Football Daily state that with the Foxes demanding £50m for Maddison, it is thought that Eddie Howe’s men cannot afford deals for both him and Tonali, due to Financial Fair Play restrictions.

Tottenham seem to be favourites for Maddison deal

This update comes a couple of days after Football Insider reported that Spurs might have an advantage in the race for the 26-year-old as Newcastle only value the attacking midfielder at £30m.

The Northern Echo had previously reported on Monday that Spurs are the ‘favourites’ to land Maddison as they are willing to offer him a higher salary than Newcastle while the player also prefers living in London.

Spurs Web Opinion

It appears as if Maddison is seen as a priority signing by Ange Postecoglou while he is one of just several options on Newcastle’s radar.

So, one would expect Spurs to get this deal over the line but I doubt the North London club would consider paying more than £40m for the attacking midfielder, given that he has only one year left on his contract.

England camp rumours are good news for Tottenham

According to The Mail, the chat around the camp is that the Leicester City star is keen to make a switch to the Lilywhites over any other interested party.

The publication adds that Tottenham are also interested in Harvey Barnes, but it is explained that the winger’s future might not be resolved until later in the transfer window.

This update comes just a day after The Northern Echo reported that Spurs are ‘strong favourites’ to land Maddison this summer, with the player alleged to be ‘edging towards’ a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The outlet suggested that the 26-year-old prefers to live in London over the North East while Ange Postecoglou’s men are also willing to offer him a higher salary than the Magpies.

Spurs Web Opinion

All indications at the moment are that Tottenham have a huge advantage over Newcastle United in the race for Maddison.

However, I cannot see the Lilywhites paying £50m for the 26-year-old, given that he only has one year left on his contract.

So, unless Leicester lower their demands, the negotiations could potentially drag on for another few weeks.
