Gary Lineker has claimed that Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are the best central defensive pairing in the Premier League at the moment.

Tottenham had the leakiest defence of any of the top 14 sides in the Premier League last season, conceding a whopping 63 goals over the course of the campaign.

However, so far this season, the Lilywhites have been one of the most solid defensive units across the division, having let in just nine goals in their first 10 league games.

This is despite the fact that Spurs now commit a lot more bodies forward and play a very high defensive line under Ange Postecoglou.

Van de Ven has received plenty of praise following the impressive start to his Premier League career, with some even naming the Dutchman as the best signing of the summer transfer window (The Times).

Are Van de Ven and Romero the best duo in the PL?

Lineker admitted that he has been mightily impressed by the partnership that Romero and Van de Ven have forged this season.

The former Spurs striker said on Rest is Football podcast: “And at the back, Van de Ven and Romero. Is there a better defensive partnership in the Premier League at the moment? You perhaps look at Manchester City but they tend to move around their partnerships so much.”

Micah Richards admitted that he still has doubts about Romero, owing to the Argentine’s tendency to get carried away, but he too heaped praise on Van de Ven.

The former Man City star responded: “The only I would say about Spurs is that Romero, he tends to get a little bit excited from time to time. Exactly (he could get himself a red card.)

“He lets the emotion get the better of him sometimes. But as for a paring right now, this season, they have been exceptional. Van de Ven to come in and just be so cool and calm and collected, positioning.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Romero and Van de Ven have both been exceptional but we might be in serious trouble if either of them picks up an injury, which is why top-quality reinforcements in central defence should be Tottenham’s number one priority in January.

Garth Crooks continues to recognize the successes of Tottenham Hotspur’s players, by naming Micky van de Ven in his Premier League Team of the Week after the win over Crystal Palace on Friday night.

Since arriving at Tottenham this summer, Micky van de Ven has seemingly helped the Lilywhites faithful forget all about the defensive woes of last season.

The young Dutchman has forged an incredible partnership with vice-captain Cristian Romero at the heart of the Spurs defence and has wasted no time in establishing himself in the Premier League.

On Friday, Tottenham had to dig deep to overcome Palace at Selhurst Park. Despite dominating possession, Spurs were never quite home and dry against the Eagles, and had to be particularly vigilant in the dying moments after Jordan Ayew’s controversial goal halved the deficit.

Van de Ven named in Team of the Week again

Ange Postecoglou‘s side held firm and secured all three points, largely thanks to fine defensive work from the backline. That hard work was praised by Garth Crooks, in his latest Team of the Week selection for the BBC.

On van de Ven’s inclusion, Crooks said: “This kid is looking better with every appearance. It’s still early days in his career and there is a long way to go in the title race but Micky van de Ven looks like the real deal. The Netherlands international is quick, comfortable on the ball and likes a goal.

“He didn’t score in the victory at Crystal Palace, but no one was complaining about that. What van de Ven brings to the proceedings is a calm, steadying influence at the back for Spurs and provides Cristian Romero with a defensive partner he can not only rely on but help develop.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I think that final point is very important and interesting. Romero clearly feels a heightened sense of responsibility this season, and not just because of his vice-captaincy, but because he has a peer next to him who is looking to learn from him. What a partnership!

Gary Neville says Micky van de Ven is a much better player than some people think when they watch him for the first time.

Van de Ven was a relative unknown to Premier League fans when he arrived at Spurs in the summer and some eyebrows would have been raised when the North London club paid £43m for the defender on the back of just one good season in the Bundesliga.

However, the decision has proven to be a masterstroke by Tottenham, with the Dutchman settling in seamlessly into Premier League football and looking like someone who has 100 matches in the competition under his belt.

The 22-year-old has formed a formidable partnership with Cristian Romero and shown his quality on the ball, but what stands out about him is undoubtedly his electric pace and tremendous acceleration, which one would not expect for a player of his size.

Micky Van de Ven is proving doubters wrong at Spurs

Neville said that he thought Van de Ven looked a little robotic the first time he saw him but admitted that the defender is much more mobile than he initially seemed.

The former Man Utd defender told Sky Sports (29/10/23): “Van de Ven when I watched him in that game, and I saw him live against (Manchester United), and I think we commented after. He looked really stiff, he looked quite robotic a little bit on the turn.

“But then you watch him since, and you think, he is quick, he is a really good defender, he is a lot better than you think.”

Spurs Web Opinion

What is particularly deceptive about Van de Ven is that he does not look like he is pushing hard when he is sprinting but just seems to gather pace as he starts gliding across the grass. Quite a few strikers have already been caught by surprise when the Dutchman turns on his afterburners.

There appears to be a bit of bromance brewing between Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, both of whom had high words of praise for the other following Tottenham’s win over Crystal Palace.

Romero and Van de Ven have swiftly forged a formidable partnership, with the duo complimenting each other quite well, given the Argentine’s aggression and physicality, and the Dutchman’s ability to sweep in behind with his electric pace.

Despite playing a high defensive line, Tottenham have conceded just nine goals in 10 Premier League matches so far, which is a testament to the pair’s quality.

It is not just defensively that they have made an impact but also with the ball, with Ange Postecoglou’s system reliant on the centre-backs to play out from the back.

In fact, according to Tottenham’s website, Romero created a record by completing the most passes by any Spurs player in a single game by making 141 passes at Selhurst Park.

(Photo by Will Palmer/Sportsphoto/Allstar via Getty Images)

Romero and Van de Ven are building a partnership

Van de Ven himself made 96 passes in the 2-1 win over Palace, with a whopping pass completion rate of 99 per cent.

The 22-year-old told Sky Sports (via BBC Sport) about his centre-back partner: “He is an amazing player. You can see that on the pitch. We feel each other on and off the pitch and it shows.”

When the former Wolfsburg man took to Instagram after the win on Friday, Romero commented: “Top player” along with a fire and a clap emoji.

Spurs Web Opinion

While it is obvious that the skill sets of Romero and Van de Ven complement each other quite well, it also appears as if the pair get along well off the pitch, which can only be a good thing for the burgeoning partnership.

Guglielmo Vicario has showered praise on Micky van de Ven, insisting that the Dutchman has all the qualities to evolve into the best centre-back in the world.

A lot has been made of Tottenham’s improvement going forward, with the Lilywhites having found the back of the net 22 times in their first ten Premier League games of the season.

Understandably, new signing James Maddison, who has three goals and five assists so far, has received a lot of praise, given the amount of creativity he has brought to the side.

However, Spurs also have the joint-best defensive record this season, having conceded just nine goals, which is quite astonishing when one considers the fact that they had one of the leakiest backlines in the division last season.

A lot of that improvement is arguably down to the arrival of Van de Ven, who has slotted in seamlessly at the back and formed a formidable partnership with Cristian Romero.

How good could Micky van de Ven become at Spurs?

Vicario, who has also been partly responsible for Spurs’ improved defensive record, insisted that the sky is the limit for the 22-year-old centre-back.

The goalkeeper told Spurs Play: “Micky is amazing. He’s one of the fastest defenders I’ve ever seen. It’s unbelievable. And he’s a hard-working player, I think his attitude and mentality is the best part of him.

“He’s also a technical player as well. He has all the qualities to become one of the best centre-backs in the world.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Very rarely is a player who is as big and physically dominant as Van de Ven glide so quickly across the turf as the Dutchman does. That combined with his technical quality on the ball undoubtedly makes him one of the best young defenders in world football.

Nine games in is pretty much a quarter of the season. To many, 25% is arguably the first substantial percentage of them all. 10% is not to be sniffed at but the difference between 10 and 25 per cent off a garment in a department store – is significant.

Apply this to a Premier League campaign and it means it is a large enough sample size for people to start getting excited – and justifiably so.

Let’s get it right then. A quarter of the way through the 2023-24 Premier League season, Tottenham Hotspur are top of the league. Now the cynical out there, and there are a few, will point to similar seasons where the club had good starts and roll their eyes.

Indeed, last season was the best the club has had in the Premier League. But even the most partisan of fans must admit that the football was not good. We were winning games solely through the brilliance of individuals and that formula does not last – just look at Manchester United this season.

Quite rightly, I believe, I laughed incredulously when some people tried to make a comparison between the manager of month successes of Ange and Nuno. Nuno won his after three 1-0 victories. Now I will not take anything away from him for the City win.

But the subsequent performances over Watford and Wolves were turgid and lucky. Conversely, Ange’s draw and two wins, were jammed full with daring, verve and panache. Above all, there is a plan and a clearly defined way of playing.

Roll on to the ninth game and very little has changed. The team has stayed true to their principles and sit on top of the pile. Unlike those previous campaigns, you cannot point to any lucky points acquired. Admittedly, we were, for once, on the right side of fortune with the Liverpool VAR debacle, but based on the stats for that game, we should have won.

People may argue that we could have won against Arsenal, but conversely, we could have lost quite easily – so a share of the spoils was about right.

Thus, I am left with a dilemma. Do I, in true Big Ange Cult tradition, commit to a wholehearted belief that we could indeed win the league? Or do I err on the side of caution and play down the possibility?

If I wanted to consider the title a viable option, I could draw on the Leicester experience of 2016. Weirdly, there are a number of similarities.

Both sides only had a fixture list consisting of mainly league games. In the make-up of the teams, there are genuine comparisons. A free-scoring forward: for Vardy, read Son. A centre midfielder capable of dictating play and breaking up attacks: Kante/ Bissouma, and a midfield maestro capable of scoring and assisting: Mahrez and Maddison. All of whom played in front of a solid, consistent and well-drilled defence and ‘keeper. Even as I write this, I am tempted to believe.

Can Tottenham really win the Premier League?

Yet I can’t do it – for two reasons.

Firstly, the ability Leicester had that season to put out the same starting eleven almost beggared belief. Too many of our key players have a history of picking up an injury and being out for a period of time: Maddison, Bissouma, Son and Romero have all had significant lay-offs in the last couple of years, and an injury to one or more of those players could prove fatal to any potential title charge.

Indeed, the Fulham gamed served to illuminate quite starkly our lack of depth outside the starting eleven. Without Bissouma, the slick play out from the back was just not possible at the level it has been. Credit to Sarr and Hojbjerg for trying, but they do not have the skillset to receive the ball, spin on a sixpence and release the forwards in a fluid motion.

Not many do. This in turn meant the defenders, Romero in particular, were more profligate on the ball and were trying to force the issue more than they have done recently.

Similarly, if Romero or Van de Ven were to miss games, the drop-off would be significant. The pace, awareness and technique of our defensive duo has been beautiful to behold and has evoked nostalgic memories of Jan and Toby.

However, with Sanchez being sold the back-up looks bare. Ashley Phillips has been commanding a place on the bench of late and I wonder if he is showing something in training that gives Ange the impression that the youngster could be ready to step up.

Even so, he is untried, unknown and ostensibly a shot in the dark. Our full-backs have defied expectations and have performed at a superb level so far this season, but an injury to either, Destiny in particular weakens our team significantly.

Further up the pitch, it has become apparent that James Maddison is the literal and metaphorical heartbeat of this team. There is no one in the squad who comes close to giving us what he offers. The same could be said of Son, who is proving to be ruthless in front of goal in his new central position.

Indeed, the striking options beyond Son and Kulu, don’t scream out ‘consistent high performance’. Brennan Johnson is an exciting prospect, but needs to be given time to bed into the forward three.

The injuries to Perisic and Solomon do not help the cause, the Croatian, in particular, seemed to finally have been clicking into the player we thought we had signed.

Then there is Richarlison. Although I was never convinced that he had the ability to play for a top Premier League team, I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt. Sadly, the previous eighteen months have brutally demonstrated that Tottenham is too much of a step up – especially in this new way of playing that demands high technical ability, vision and subtlety.

All this could be potentially excused if he was able to convert chances. Unfortunately, he is not and it even appeared against Fulham that the opposition were happy for him to be on the ball, whereas Maddison, Kulu and Son were instantly harassed and closed down.

He is just not good enough and Spurs should cash in as soon as possible, because he will only depreciate in value.

The second reason I can’t entertain a title tilt is the quality of opposition. In 2015-16, Tottenham should have won it. Not only did they fail to, they came third in a two-horse race.

There were few viable contenders that year in all fairness. Arsenal were limping towards to end of the Wenger era, Klopp’s time at Liverpool was just in its infancy, and Manchester City and Chelsea were awaiting the arrival of Pep and Conte respectively.

Manchester United, for those that are interested, were in another fruitless transitional phase as they desperately sought (and still seek) to effectively replace Sir Alex Ferguson.

This season the calibre of opposition is much greater. The Manchester City juggernaut shows little sign of abating, despite the De Bruyne injury. At Liverpool, Klopp’s recent reinvention is in full swing and, as much as we hate to accept it, Arsenal are a formidable opponent under Mikel Arteta.

To be finishing ahead of one of these teams would be impressive – all of them, highly unlikely. Add into the mix teams such as Newcastle, Villa and Brighton and it looks like a tough league to be competing in.

I am loving watching Tottenham, but any fans who truly understand football will understand that Spurs supporters saying ‘Why not?’ are saying so with their tongue firmly in their cheek.

Certain outlets and radio shows will try and advance the ‘Tottenham for the title’ talk because it provokes outrage and debate. The truth is that this team need to evolve and improve without the added pressure of being identified as title contenders.

The future is bright and undoubtedly exciting, so let’s just enjoy the ride without worrying about the destination just yet.

Gary O’Neil praised Micky van de Ven and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for the roles they played respectively in Tottenham’s two goals against Fulham.

Tottenham fashioned several chances throughout the game, particularly in the first half, with the Cottagers struggling to cope with the home side’s movement and combination play.

However, both of the Lilywhites’ goals came as a result of them winning the ball high up the pitch, with Fulham caught out trying to play out from the back.

It was Van de Ven who intercepted the ball ahead of the first goal before playing it to Richarlison, who in turn found Son Heung-min, who took a touch to wrong-foot the defender before curling it into the top corner.

Hojbjerg won the ball ahead of the second goal and played it first-time to Son, who found James Maddison, with the attacking midfielder keeping his composure to slot home past Bernd Leno.

Gary O’Neil was impressed by Tottenham duo

O’Neil noted how Ven de Ven’s and Hojbjerg’s first passes when Tottenham won the ball back were perfectly weighted.

The Wolves boss said on Sky Sports MNF: “I think the key to both of the goals was the quality on the first pass. Jamie touched on the one at half-time, when the centre back comes in and cushions it in lovely with his left foot, and then the second one, Hojbjerg stepping in, fantastic first pass into the nine and no time for Fulham to recover.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is quite noticeable that Tottenham have worked quite a lot on their pressing structure and how to maximise three vs three (or similar situations) in the training ground. We have looked quite deadly when winning the ball back in the final third.

FC Volendam’s director of youth department, Ruben Jongkind, has admitted that the Dutch club always knew Micky van de Ven was a special talent.

Van de Ven has had a meteoric rise, with the centre-back plying his trade in the Dutch second tier for Volendam just a little over two years ago.

Some eyebrows might have been raised when Tottenham paid £43m to sign the 22-year-old from Wolfsburg in the summer, given that the defender was coming into the Premier League with just one season of regular Bundesliga football under his belt.

However, the transfer has proved to be an inspired move by the North London club, with Van de Ven having settled seamlessly into life at Spurs, and having formed a formidable partnership with Cristian Romero at the back.

The centre-back won his first two caps for the Netherlands during the international break and looks set for a prolonged career at the highest level.

Tottenham have a real gem in Micky Van de Ven

Jongkind has now revealed that Volendam turned down some low offers for the player before eventually selling to Wolfsburg.

He told iNews about Van de Ven: “This is world-class potential so don’t come with €1.5m when [Alessandro] Bastoni who probably has less talent already went for €31m.

“His athletic ability and speed, I’ve never seen that for a centre-back or defender. He was so fast and the engine was so big but the wheels needed to also be strong.”

Jongkind revealed that it was Van de Ven’s mental strength that set him apart from other young players in the Volendam academy.

He added: “He has explained many times that he felt like s*** in the academy, it was really bad. But still, he hung on. He has a very strong mental ability and will to win, to persevere and to keep on going.

“What sets him apart is his ability to adapt to a higher level of competition. You are a true super talent when you can continually reinvent yourself and become better.”

Spurs Web Opinion

All the early signs are that we have a generational talent on our hands as Van de Ven appears to have all the attributes needed to evolve into a world-class modern-day centre-back.

Darren Ambrose says Micky van de Ven is the player who has impressed him the most among Tottenham’s new signings.

Van de Ven was, by no means, the most high-profile of Tottenham’s signings in the summer, with the centre-back being a relative unknown to Premier League fans, arriving at the club on the back one good season for Wolfsburg.

In fact, many Spurs even preferred Bayer Leverskusen’s Edmond Tapsoba over the Dutchman in the summer when it was reported that the club were looking to sign one of the two (Football.London).

However, the 22-year-old has hardly put a foot wrong since arriving at the club and has showcased composure and maturity that one would expect of a vastly experienced player.

Van de Ven deservedly won his first two caps for the Netherlands during the international break, coming on as a substitute against both France and Greece.

Micky Van de Ven has been a revelation at Spurs

Ambrose has stated that the former Wolfsburg man has managed to bring the best out of Cristian Romero since his arrival.

The pundit told talkSPORT: “Van de Ven has impressed me more than anyone because not only has he come in and shown how good he is – he’s quick, strong, and reads the game well.

“Romero seems a different player because he’s got a partner next to him on a level with him now, he trusts him, and they’ve got that partnership built up.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The reason for Romero’s improvement is not only because of the fact that he now has a top-class centre-back partner next to him.

It has to do with our current system as the Argentine is allowed to be aggressive in winning the ball back and has more freedom to showcase his quality in possession.

It has emerged that Tottenham Hotspur could end up paying even more for Micky van de Ven if they are to qualify for the Champions League come the end of the season.

Micky van de Ven was signed by Ange Postecoglou this summer in a deal worth an initial £34m (Sky Sports). He was regarded as the solution to all of Tottenham’s defensive issues, which sounds like a lot of pressure to put on a 22-year-old, but the Dutchman has thrived in North London so far.

Alongside Cristian Romero, van de Ven is now part of what appears to be one of the strongest centre-back pairings in the Premier League.

Spurs are currently unbeaten after eight games in the league this season and sit at the top of the table. It’s early days, of course, but there is now talk of the Lilywhites aiming high this term.

Micky Van de Ven’s price could go up for Spurs

A title challenge may be a stretch, but a top-four finish and Champions League football is certainly looking promising for Spurs. But, such an achievement will cost them.

That’s according to Sport BILD (via Sport Witness), with a report claiming Tottenham will have to pay Wolfsburg a further €10m (£8.6m) if they qualify for the Champions League, as part of the deal to sign van de Ven.

Apparently, this was one of the add-on clauses in the transfer, and Wolfsburg are now keeping an eye on Tottenham’s progress this season. It is said that if Spurs “continue to be so successful,” the German club will benefit financially, quicker than originally anticipated.

Spurs Web Opinion

Even if we have to pay this sum, Micky van de Ven is worth it. He’s had a fantastic start at Spurs, and any success we achieve this season will be, in part, down to the incredible combination at the back of van de Ven and Romero.

Virgil van Djik has reacted positively to Micky van de Ven’s performance for the Netherlands in their hard-fought win over Greece on Monday.

Van de Ven, who has been flawless for Spurs this season since arriving from Wolfsburg in the summer, deservedly made his debut for the Dutch senior side last week, coming off the bench in their loss to the French.

The 22-year-old once again came on as a substitute in the latter stages in Athens on Monday, replacing Quilindschy Hartman at left-back on 74 minutes as the away side went in search of a winner.

Ronald Koeman’s side eventually got the winner from the penalty spot in added time as Virgil van Djik stepped up to convert after Denzel Dumfries was fouled in the box late in the encounter.

Virgil Van Dijk is impressed by Micky van de Ven

Some in the Dutch media suggested after the game that the Tottenham man still has some room for improvement (Valentijn Driessen – VotebalZone) but the defender’s performances have seemingly been appreciated by his teammates.

Van de Ven took to Instagram after the game to post: ‘Crucial step towards a goal’, with Van Djik responding with a raised hands and a fire emoji, whilst Cody Gakpo applauded the Spurs star’s performance.

Spurs Web Opinion

This is undoubtedly the first of many caps for Van de Ven and I fully expect the Tottenham man to displace Nathan Ake from the Netherlands starting eleven before next summer’s European Championship.

Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen has called on fans and pundits to not get carried away with Micky van de Ven, remarking that his mistakes against Greece showed that the Tottenham man still has a long way to go.

Van de Ven has been a revelation since arriving at Tottenham in the summer, showing composure and maturity well beyond his years.

The performances could not be overlooked by Ronald Koeman who called up the centre-back to the Dutch national side and handed him his first two caps for his country over the course of the international break, coming on as a substitute against both France and Greece.

While he showed plenty of promising signs against the French, the 22-year-old was asked to play left-back against the Greeks after replacing Feyenoord’s Quilindschy Hartman on 74 minutes as the away side was going in search of a late winner at the Stadium OPAP in Athens.

The Netherlands did eventually find the winner, with Denzel Dumfries being fouled in the box on 89 minutes and Virgil van Dijk stepping up to convert from the penalty spot.

Micky Van de Ven still has room for improvement

Driessen was far from impressed with Van de Ven’s cameo, suggesting that the Tottenham man showed his lack of experience on Monday night.

The journalist told VoetbalZone: “In the final phase against Greece, the Netherlands still ran into problems. Van de Ven loses a ball that results in a dangerous attack.

“These are moments when you definitely have to play. Then you see that it is a player who has not yet played many matches at this level.

“He came in very well against France. You can have him there. He is strong and fast. He still has something to prove. Now we are completely impressed by ten minutes against a France that plays at eighty per cent.

“He did make a good tackle, I have to admit that, but we don’t have to go all out when someone makes a good tackle or gives a good pass.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Van de Ven is capable of operating as a left-back but it is not a position that he is most comfortable in and there would have certainly been some nerves, given that he was making just his second appearance for his country.

I have no doubt that the 22-year-old will replace Nathan Ake as Van Dijk’s main centre-back partner by the time the European Championship rolls around next summer.

Tottenham Hotspur star Micky van de Ven is steadily working his way into the fold of the Netherlands national team, but in his latest appearance, he made a glaring error that has been criticised by a pundit.

Micky van de Ven has been a revelation since arriving at Tottenham this summer. The former Wolfsburg man has slotted into the heart of the Spurs defence with ease and has formed an incredibly effective partnership with Cristian Romero.

The 22-year-old has been one of the stars of the Ange Postecoglou era so far, and even bagged his first goal for Spurs in the 1-0 win over Luton Town before the international break.

Van de Ven’s fine form has led to a first senior call-up to the Netherlands squad for this current set of international fixtures.

The young defender earned his first cap last week, coming on as a substitute with ten minutes to go in the 2-1 defeat against France.

Van de Ven criticised for mistake on Netherlands duty

However, his latest appearance for Holland, a 15-minute substitute cameo, has seen Van de Ven draw some criticism from ESPN’s Hans Kraay, after the Spurs man played a sloppy pass which put his side in danger of conceding.

Kraay said: “Really a ridiculous and worthless ball. How can you make it up? This is a really ridiculous ball at every football level in the Netherlands, including the lowest of the low. Chip it on the striker or give it to Tijjani Reijnders in front of you, but [not] this.”

In his defence, Van de Ven was playing at left-back, but Kraay added: “At FC Volendam in the Kitchen Champion Division he also started at left-back and he did that very well, but he is much better in the middle. He also plays for Tottenham, and they really run away with him there.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I’m not going to lose any sleep over Van de Ven struggling at left-back for the Netherlands, and neither should he, really. He made a mistake, it didn’t cost his team, and he will never really be asked to play there for Spurs anyway so shouldn’t be an issue.

Micky van de Ven must be loving life right now, as he carried his Tottenham Hotspur form into the international break with the Netherlands, and made a positive impact on his senior debut for his country.

It would be fair to say Tottenham’s main issue last season was in defence. The Lilywhites conceded 63 goals in the league last term, with only five teams conceding more (and three of those teams being relegated from the Premier League).

Fixing that problem was of paramount importance to Ange Postecoglou this summer. His solution was signing Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg in a deal worth a reported £43m deal (Sky Sports).

Despite a relatively shaky debut against Brentford, the 22-year-old has flourished at Spurs and has developed an incredible partnership with Cristian Romero at the heart of the Tottenham defence.

Van de Ven came into the international break having scored his first goal for Spurs – a neat finish to win the game against Luton Town, thanks to some fine work by James Maddison.

Micky van de Ven goes from strength to strength

An international debut was inevitable given his current form, and van de Ven managed to get ten minutes under his belt for the Netherlands in the recent defeat to France. His side may have lost the game, but the youngster handled himself brilliantly on the big stage.

So much so, that former Holland midfielder, Marciano Vink, had this to say after the game (via  Voetbalpraat): “It’s nice when you see how many young players are coming through. Van de Ven came in [and did] really fantastic. Gosh!”

Spurs Web Opinion

Micky van de Ven is a player I knew was going to be a success in this Spurs side, but I did not expect him to adapt to everything so quickly. He and Romero have the potential to be one of, if not the best centre-back pairing in the Premier League if they keep it up.

Clinton Morrison thinks Micky Van de Ven’s arrival at Tottenham Hotspur has brought the best out of Cristian Romero.

Romero was one of many Tottenham players who struggled to showcase his best form last season, with the Argentine being guilty of some poor errors, particularly in the second half of the campaign.

However, in the first eight games of this season, the 25-year-old has looked more like the player we see in an Argentina shirt.

The former Juventus man appears to be playing with much more responsibility, now that he has emerged as the leader of Spurs’ young backline and has been handed the vice-captaincy.

Morrison insisted that while Romero’s quality as a defender was never really in doubt, he now appears to have shed his tendency to be reckless.

Is Van de Ven one of the signings of the summer?

The former Crystal Palace striker put that change down to the arrival of Van de Ven, waxing lyrical about Tottenham’s centre-back pairing.

The pundit told Sky Sports: “Van de Ven has made Romero a better player, he’s not losing his head as much. He’s younger than him. He can cover the ground. The young lad can cover the ground, he scored the winner against Luton.

“I think the combination play between the two of them [Romero and Van de Ven] is really good. Romero’s aggressive, he can defend. We know he’s a good defender but sometimes he loses his head and gets a yellow card then makes another silly tackle and gets a red card.

“He’s so important to that team at the moment and Van de Ven could be one of the signings of the summer. He’s been outstanding. He’s big, he’s aggressive, he’s comfortable in possession and that’s down to the manager, Postecoglou.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Conte failed to get Romero’s to channelise his aggression appropriately but that is something Postecoglou seems to have succeeded at by making the Argentine the part of the new leadership group.

It is now evident from Romero’s body language that he is much more invested in this team as he feels a sense of ownership as one of the senior heads that youngsters look up to.

It goes without saying that Ange Postecoglou has made an almost miraculous impact since his arrival in N17 from Celtic in June.

The relatively little-known Aussie is drawing plaudits from pundits and fans alike for the way he sets out his teams, his refreshing personality and his clear will to win.

His wider recognition has led to two Premier League Manager of the Month awards for his first two months in the job, the first time a manager in the league has ever achieved this.

The signings Postecoglou has made so far during his tenure in the Tottenham dugout, on paper to the average Spurs fan, looked promising but no one could have predicted the immediate impact that some of them have made.

Part of his philosophy is to develop young players, both signing them himself and from the youth system, and that is evident upon viewing a list of his additions.

Including future acquisitions and players agreeing to join at a later date, a total of ten new signings were brought in during Postecoglou’s first transfer window, and those signings will all be graded out of 10…

Rating Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham signings

LONDON, ENGLAND – AUGUST 19: Pedro Porro of Tottenham Hotspur looks on during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on August 19, 2023 in London, England. (Photo by Chloe Knott – Danehouse/Getty Images)

Pedro Porro – Loan deal made permanent from Sporting, reported £39m

Having had a shaky start to life in N17, with his full debut coming in that 4-1 defeat to Leicester City in February, Pedro Porro has firmly established himself as one of the league’s best right-backs.

This was evident during his commanding display against Liverpool, where not only did his late driven cross find the back of the net off the foot of the unfortunate Joel Matip, but his defensive awareness and strong tackling ensured a quiet day at the office for Mo Salah, and firmly put to bed any doubts about his defensive abilities.

He looks to have come into his own under Postecoglou, freed from the shackles of Antonio Conte’s back five for his opening two months at Tottenham, and, at 24 years of age, is likely to only improve from here. 7.5/10

Dejan Kulusevski, loan move from Juventus made permanent, reported £25m

It seems that Dejan Kulusevski has been at Tottenham for ages, even though he is technically a new signing, the former Juventus man joining in January 2022 on an initial 18-month loan, with Postecoglou triggering the option to buy the Swedish international over the summer.

Another player who looks to have come under life under a new manager, Kulusevski is quickly putting a disappointing 2022/23 behind him, and our own “ginger from Sweden” is proving undroppable and unstoppable once again on the wing.

The scorer of the winning goal against Sheffield United already this term, completing the latest comeback in Premier League history, ‘Deki’’s work rate and endless determination has won the Spurs fans over again, after a fairly turbulent previous season on a personal level. 7.5/10

Guglielmo Vicario, from Empoli, reported £16m

The first ‘proper’ new signing for the season, it has been a fine start to life in N17 for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. Despite some quite unstable performances in pre-season, his shot-stopping prowess is already proving a hit with the Spurs faithful and justifying every penny that Spurs paid for him.

It is a testament to the impact of Vicario that his former side, Empoli, comfortably mid-table in the Italian Serie A last season, are struggling in the relegation zone this year without their shot-stopper.

Overall, it’s fair to say that Vicario is becoming more and more comfortable with life in England with every passing week, proving he is not just a ‘cheaper David Raya’. 8/10

James Maddison, from Leicester City, reported £40m

The first true ‘statement’ signing of the Postecoglou era, and James Maddison has exceeded expectations.

A star man of the Leicester team for so long, Spurs beat numerous other clubs, including Newcastle, to his signature when the Foxes were relegated at the end of last season, and his impact on and off the pitch has been sensational, having been appointed vice-captain before a ball was even kicked this season.

Currently, the top provider of assists in the Premier League with five, and with two goals to his name, Maddison’s Spurs career has got off to a flying start, earning him a recall to the England squad, and a well-deserved Premier League Player of the Month award for August.

If he can stay fit all season, who knows how far he can help take this young, hungry Spurs team? 9.5/10

Manor Solomon, free transfer

Eyebrows were raised when Manor Solomon was brought in on a free transfer, upon the expiration of his contract at Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk.

However, the former Fulham man has proven himself to be a capable winger when called upon, as was evident with his two assists on his first start for Spurs in the 5-2 win at Burnley.

Unfortunately out for a few months due to an injury suffered in training, and subsequent operation, Solomon will look to hit the ground running when he returns, and prove himself to be the exciting winger that Ange Postecoglou is looking for. 6/10

Ashley Phillips, from Blackburn Rovers, £2m

It almost seems unfair that a grade has to be given for an 18-year-old centre back, signed from the Championship, with no first-team appearances yet for Spurs.

However, Ashley Phillips has proven a commanding presence at centre-back for the youth team, and has nine caps for England’s Under 19 team.

A composed centre-back, comfortable with the ball at his feet, and with first-team experience having made eight appearances in the Championship for Blackburn Rovers, Phillips is undoubtedly one to watch for the future. 5/10

Micky van de Ven, from Wolfsburg, reported £30m

The transfer saga that seemed to last a lifetime finally ended with Spurs getting their man, and what a signing Dutch centre-back Micky van de Ven has turned out to be.

A string of sensational performances at the back alongside Cristian Romero, culminating in his first goal in Lilywhite away to Luton Town, it is clear that van de Ven is the authoritative centre-back that Tottenham so desperately desired to form a rock-solid partnership with Romero.

Being just 22 years old, van de Ven will surely have a long and successful career in North London and with the Dutch national team, who, amazingly, he is still without a cap for – only a matter of time surely. 9/10

Alejo Veliz, from Rosario Central, reported £13m

Again, it does not seem fair that a grade has to be provided for Alejo Veliz, with the young Argentine striker having played just ten minutes of Premier League football so far this season.

Moreover, he was on the pitch as the winning goal was scored against Liverpool, so it could be said that he already has a winning mentality…

An exciting signing from his native Argentina, the 20-year-old has bags of potential and, as he progresses, will surely be looking to knock on the door of the starting XI before long. 6.5/10

Brennan Johnson, from Nottingham Forest, reported £45m

Another young player with raw potential, Brennan Johnson was signed on Deadline Day from Nottingham Forest to provide competition in forward areas – however picked up a knock during the North London Derby and has not played since.

An unquestionably lively player, epitomised by the fact he scored immediately after coming on as a substitute against Sheffield United, though it was disallowed for offside, Johnson has a hunger and desire when he plays and, in the long run, will be an ideal option for Postecoglou. 7/10

Luka Vuskovic, from Hajduk Split, reported £9.5m

The only player to not pull on the Tottenham shirt for a match yet, unable to join the club until 2025, Luka Vuskovic is a highly-rated Croatian central defender, and Spurs, who are no strangers to welcoming Croatian talent, beat competition from other elite European clubs to sign him.

Provided that Ange Postecoglou stays to welcome him to the club, and therefore aids his development so that he becomes a starting centre-back, we look to have a real player on our hands. One to watch for sure. 6/10

The international break is here, and Tottenham Hotspur have a number of players involved with their respective countries. Here’s when and where each player will feature.

Tottenham go into the international break at the top of the Premier League table after an incredible start to the season under Ange Postecoglou.

The Spurs boss has bid farewell to a large portion of his squad for the next couple of weeks, as various players head out to join up with their national squads.

There are Euro 2024 qualifiers, friendly matches, youth squad action, and even some World Cup 2026 qualifiers on the way in the coming days.

On Wednesday, Ben Davies captained Wales to a 4-0 win over Gibraltar at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground. The Spurs defender even opened the scoring on the night, nodding home from three yards out.

Meanwhile, Tottenham youngsters Luca Gunter and Ashley Phillips played the full 90 minutes as England U19s drew 0-0 with Montenegro. Alfie Dorrington was an unused substitute for the game, while Jamie Donley didn’t make the matchday squad.

Fellow youngster, Will Andiyapan, was in action for Wales U19s, playing the full 90 minutes in another 0-0 draw, against Austria.

Mido has admitted that he was not completely convinced when Tottenham Hotspur signed Micky van de Ven in the summer but he has been thoroughly impressed by the centre-back’s displays so far.

In recent history, the Premier League has been the toughest league for centre-backs to adapt to, with many taking their time to get adjusted to the physicality and speed of the division.

However, despite being just 22 years of age and having had just one full season in the Bundesliga, Van de Ven has seamlessly adapted to the demands of English football.

In fact, the Dutchman even looks like the senior member of the duo alongside Crisitan Romero at times, exuding calmness and always appearing to make the right decisions under pressure.

Micky Van de Ven is proving people wrong at Spurs

Mido revealed that he had his doubts over the Netherlands Under-21 international’s ability to cope with the forwards in the Premier League, but admitted that the Spurs newcomer has proved him wrong.

The former Tottenham striker told talkSPORT (9/10 8:57am): “I’ll be honest when I first saw [Micky] Van de Ven with his movement I was a bit worried, to be honest.

“I understand the idea of Ange [Postecoglou] that he wants a left-footed centre-back to start from the back and to have a better angle to see the whole of the pitch playing the ball between the lines and the diagonals.

“But defensively, I was really worried that this guy would struggle in the Premier League. I know in the Premier League that you always play against big guys up front and the likes of [Erling] Haaland and [Ivan] Toney, all the big guys, it’s very difficult to defend.

“It’s not like the Dutch league, it’s different, it could be a shock for him. But to be honest to the lad, he’s been brilliant.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is fair to say that most Spurs fans would have preferred Tapsoba to Van de Ven in the summer.

However, on the back of the start that the Dutchman has made, I doubt Tottenham supporters would swap the 22-year-old with any other left-sided centre-back in the world, including the likes of Bastoni and Gvardiol.

Rio Ferdinand has admitted that he really likes the look of Micky van de Ven, and the Dutchman has all the attributes to evolve into a top central defender.

Spurs fans have been raving about Van de Ven since his debut against Brentford and it now appears like pundits and opposition fans are beginning to take note of the 22-year-old on the back of his calm and composed performances against Arsenal and Liverpool.

One can argue that his display at Kenilworth Road was his best of the season so far as the youngster had to deal with Luton’s physically imposing forwards, with the home side resorting to playing direct for much of the second half.

Not only did Van de Ven pass the test with flying colours but he also made an impact in the other box, netting his first goal for Tottenham.

Big praise for Van de Ven from Rio Ferdinand

Ferdinand believes that the former Wolfsburg man has managed to bring the best out of Cristian Romero, and admitted that he likes what he is seeing from their partnership.

The 44-year-old said on his YouTube channel: “The goalscorer, Micky van de Ven, better than good. He’s got a chance to be top. He’s quick, he’s aggressive. He wants to get in a foot race. And another partnership that seems to be blossoming. It’s only eight games, but it’s blossoming.

“He’s almost calmed down Romero. Romero was an absolute loose cannon last year. He’s calmed him down and they’re both playing to a very good level at the moment.

“Let’s see how it goes. But for a young centre-half, the way he’s adapted so quick to the Premier League; doesn’t mind a little rough and tumble because he had that at the weekend, and dealt with it. But also he’s clean the way he plays. I really like him – centre-back to watch out for.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Ferdinand knows better than most what qualities it takes to succeed as a centre-back in the Premier League and these are certainly massive words of praise for Van de Ven, who is continuing to show maturity beyond his years.

Tony Cascarino has admitted that he has been surprised by how well Micky van de Ven has done since his switch to Tottenham in the summer.

Spurs reportedly paid £43m to sign Van de Ven from Wolfsburg in the summer, and some eyebrows might have been raised at the time, given that the centre-back had only had one good season in the Bundesliga.

In fact, it is fair to say that many Tottenham fans would have preferred Bayern Leverkusen’s Edmond Topsoba over the Dutchman, with the Burkina Faso international widely reported to be the other name at the top of the North London club’s radar (GiveMeSport).

However, Van de Ven has hardly put a foot wrong since arriving in N17, having formed a solid partnership at the back with Cristian Romero.

The 22-year-old netted his first goal for Tottenham on Sunday, which proved the difference between the Lilywhites and Luton Town.

Van de Ven has taken to PL life like a duck to water

Speaking after Spurs’ win at Kenilworth Road, Cascarino told talkSPORT: “Van de Ven has been a real big surprise. I say surprise because obviously you’ve got to give the credit to the football club for the recruitment that’s been made to bring him in.

“Most people know he was known as the quickest defender in German football with Wolfsburg. With that, he’s a talented boy on the ball. He looks incredibly assured.

“He reminds me of what Botman did at Newcastle. When Newcastle bought Sven Botman, he looked like [he had] a real, immediate effect on the team.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Van de Ven was not exactly an unknown in the summer but a lot of sides were hesitant to pay a big fee for a player who had just one good season in Germany.

Tottenham’s recruitment team and Postecoglou deserve a lot of credit as they clearly saw something in the 22-year-old that convinced them to take a punt.
