Tottenham and Newcastle could be set for disappointment when it comes to the reported pursuit of Juventus star Federico Chiesa, after it has emerged the player is braced for talks with his current club soon which could result in a new contract.

With Tottenham flying at the moment, it’s easy to forget that this is a squad which is still in need of reinforcements. Beyond the starting 11, the Lilywhites are a couple of injuries away from a potential disaster.

Ange Postecoglou will be firmly focused on the task at hand, but when the January transfer window opens, there are expected to be some moves made by the Spurs boss.

Chiesa may stay at Juventus if talks progress well

One name which has been linked with a switch to North London is that of Federico Chiesa. A report from CalcioMercatoWeb just days ago claimed both Spurs and Newcastle were keen on the Italian, and that his current club could be willing to cash in.

But, the latest report from TEAMtalk suggests quite the opposite, with Chiesa due to hold ” crunch talks” with Juventus before the winter window to discuss his future.

The meeting is set to take place in December, and “insiders are convinced that the formal talks are angled towards Chiesa staying in Italy.”

Whatever happens in that meeting, it is now thought a move in January is “unlikely,” and that any transfer is far more “plausible” for the summer, instead.

Newcastle United are said to be wary of FFP when it comes to their spending, while Spurs are not expected to “spend big” in January. Liverpool, meanwhile, are monitoring Chiesa, but would only swoop if Mo Salah were to leave.

Spurs Web Opinion

Federico Chiesa is an incredible player, and is someone I could see us signing if we finish in the top four this year. I think we would struggle to persuade him to come otherwise, but it’s exciting to consider him in Ange Postecoglou’s system.

According to CalcioMercatoWeb, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have both shown interest in signing Federico Chiesa, who Juventus are willing to cash in on.

After a terrific start to his spell in Turin following his switch from Fiorentina, Chiesa’s career has stalled a bit over the last two years due to a combination of injuries and loss of form.

CalcioMercatoWeb explain that Juve need to offload some of their big-name players, given their financial problems and their need to strengthen some areas of the pitch.

The 26-year-old, who is contracted at the Allianz Stadium until 2025, is thought to be one of the players that the Old Lady are ready to move on.

The outlet adds that the Serie A giants would be more than happy to sell the versatile attacker if they receive an offer of around €60m (£52.3m).

Spurs are Newcastle are both interested in Chiesa

It is alleged that the player is ‘very much liked’ by both Tottenham and Newcastle, who could both ‘easily have the right budget at their disposal’ to green-light the operation.

Meanwhile, TEAMtalk have asserted that along with Spurs and Newcastle, Chiesa is also admired by both Manchester United and Liverpool.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham are likely to be in the market for a wide player, given the injuries to both Solomon and Perisic. There is no doubt about Chiesa’s talent and he could potentially thrive in Postecoglou’s system. However, it would be a risk to invest a big amount in the 26-year-old, given his injury record.

Dean Jones has written in his column for GiveMeSport that Wolves’ Pedro Neto is one of the attackers that Tottenham are watching ahead of the January transfer window.

Jones claims that Ange Postecoglou would prefer to bring in ‘someone to support rather than lead the attack’, explaining that the Lilywhites are not after a number nine.

This is because Son Heung-min is expected to continue leading the line while Tottenham also want to give Richarlison opportunities to come good.

It is alleged that Spurs are not prepared to give up on the Brazilian, who is not going to be sold by the club in January.

Tottenham have their eye on Pedro Neto at Wolves

The North London club are said to be watching several wide-attackers, with Al-Ittihad’s Jota, Galatasaray’s Kerem Akturkoglu and Juventus’ Federico Chiesa said to be among the players on the club’s radar.

In addition, Jones also adds that Spurs are keeping a close eye on Neto, with his style of play said to be ‘of real interest’ to the club.

However, the journalist adds that the Portugal international’s valuation would be quite high and that Tottenham could face competition from Liverpool and Arsenal for the Wolves star’s signature.

Spurs Web Opinion

Neto would be the dream signing out of these four and will add a different dimension to our attack. Tottenham’s decision on who to pursue might depend on several factors, including whether Bryan Gil impresses over the coming weeks or how quickly Solomon recovers.

CalcioMercatoWeb.it have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a move for Juventus attacker Federico Chiesa but the Bianconeri have no intention of letting the player go without a fight.

Chiesa exploded in his first season at Juventus following his switch from Fiorentina in 2020 but the winger has not hit those heights for the last 18 months, partly due to a series of injury problems (Transfermarkt).

Juventus

CMW.it now state that Antonio Conte looks set to commit his future to Tottenham and that the Italian will ask the North London club to pursue the Juve star.

The report explains that Spurs are likely to start an onslaught for the 25-year-old during next summer’s transfer window rather than in January.

However, it is said that the Old Lady do not wish to let Chiesa go and have warned Conte and Fabio Paratici about that fact.

CMW.it alleges that the Serie A giants will only be willing to part ways with the Italy international if Tottenham offer one of either Son Heung-min or Richarlison as part of the deal, or if they present a ‘very important cash offer’.

Spurs Web Opinion

Chiesa’s quality is not in doubt and the 25-year-old’s tenacity and his work rate will be valued highly by Conte. However, the only concern would be about the former Fiorentina man’s fitness, which one would expect Tottenham to do their due diligence on if they are prepared to spend big on the player.

Antonio Conte is the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. For the club in its current state, this is a coup of the highest order.

The week Conte joined brought us the low of one of the driest, most disappointing performances in recent memory against United last Sunday to the high of his appointment, followed by a ‘crazy game’ as the Godfather referred to it and then a far less crazy one at Goodison – a pretty standard week as a fan of the ridiculous, incredible club.

Not to put a damper on things, but let’s not forget we have been here before: appointing a former Premier League title-winning boss without West London neighbours, mid-season, with fans dreaming of Tottenham winning medal after medal.

What the Spurs hierarchy must do differently with Conte, that they did not do with Mourinho, is not just invest in the playing staff, but, crucially, buy the type of player that means that Spurs can compete with the rest of the top six.

They cannot do this by playing negative football, but by bringing the talent that the truly top players possess to break down defences, dictate play and produce magic, to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The signs are good however, unlike Mourinho, Conte historically refuses to work without major investment. In order to bring him to N17, assurances must have been made and we can expect some major business over the next few windows.

Conte’s knowledge of Serie A, in addition to Fabio Paratici joining the club over the summer, means that Italy may be a heavy source of recruitment in the near future.

Links to the Italian top-flight’s stars have been all over Spurs fans’ Twitter feeds this week, so I am going to pick out 5 Serie A players that could follow Conte to Tottenham.

Franck Kessie

The tough-tackling Ivorian has been the focus of a great deal of transfer gossip due to his contract situation at AC Milan.

With 12 months left on his deal, many of the world’s top clubs would love to have a player of Kessie’s quality with no transfer fee and when competition for transfers arises, Spurs tend to stick their heads in the sand.

This may be something that Conte’s demands to be changed.

Kessie would bring something to Spurs that they have lacked, as he combines defensive output with excellent ball progression: essentially what we expected from Tanguy N’dombele when he first joined the club.

Ndombele has been impressive, one of the only Spurs players that have been able to pick the locks of defensive teams, but he has been unable to do this consistently alongside solid defensive numbers.

Kessie could free up Ndombele and Lo Celso and any other creative midfielders to roam free whilst still retaining defensive solidity.

One report from Italy has suggested the Spurs are already close to an agreement with Kessie’s agent – if true, it’s an excellent first addition of Conte’s reign.

Dusan Vlahovic

The Serbian starlet was bound to be one of the first names linked to Spurs following Conte’s arrival.

With a potential move to a 3-5-2, having a player like Vlahovic rotate with Kane and Son and with plenty of minutes available for all three means this move is a lot more viable and likely.

Tottenham could yet again benefit from a contract situation, with Vlahovic’s deal set to run out at the end of next season, meaning his value may have come down slightly from the £50m+ being touted this last summer.

With 21 goals in Serie A last year and 8 in just 11 appearances this term, the young Serb looks like the perfect person to partner and eventually replace Harry Kane’s output.

Nicolo Barella

Conte could look to recruit from his scudetto-winning Inter side.

Several Inter Milan stars would definitely improve this current Spurs team, however, I have picked out the two best fits for us and our current needs: Nicolo Barella and Alessandro Bastoni.

Barella was crucial to Conte’s Inter as he combines incredible vision, strong ball-carrying and quick-thinking on the counter-attack with high ball recovery.

He also possesses an excellent long-range shot: remind you of a certain Dane that used to wear Lilywhite that I mentioned earlier?

Barella is hard-working and passionate – the perfect Conte player.

He has in the last couple of days signed a new contract, however, with Inter likely to be cash-strapped in the next few windows, they may just be increasing the value of their asset.

If the likes of Dele, Ndombele and Lo Celso fail to impress the Italian, don’t be surprised if we see Barella come through the door at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Alessandro Bastoni

The other Inter player that I feel would be an excellent addition to Conte’s squad would improve Spurs in an area they have been weak for a number of years.

Tottenham have been linked with all three of Inter’s centre-backs (who played the majority of games in their title-winning season), with Stefan De Vrij the most touted in the media at this moment and Milan Skriniar coming close to a move last summer, after that infamous photo of Spurs’ recruitment guru, Steve Hitchen in Milan making the rounds.

This follows the mantra that Conte is here to get results for the now, whereas Tottenham have previously been overly focused on the future and De Vrij and Skriniar are ready-made top-class centre-backs.

However, I would argue that Alessandro Bastoni is equally as competent as his two senior counterparts and crucially, plays on the left side of a back three due to that side being his preferred foot.

Tottenham have been missing a left-footed centre-back ever since Jan Vertonghen left the club and Bastoni would be securing perhaps the best young defender in world football of that type.

Federico Chiesa

The final inclusion is somewhat of a luxury.

Pre-Conte any of these 5 would be an extreme departure from the norm regarding incomings, but anything seems possible with Godfather in charge.

Chiesa is Italy’s biggest young talent and the tricky wide-man has already proved his quality on the big stages, especially with the Azzuri at the Euros and the recent Nations League finals.

He is equally adept at cutting in from the left as he is as a traditional winger, combined with Son’s flexibility, opposition fullbacks wouldn’t know whether they were coming or going.

Chiesa certainly knows how to terrify defenders and has excellent technique, whether his final ball is a cross, a pass or a beautifully curled shot into the far corner.

Possible Spurs XIs (3-4-3 + 3-5-2):

Lloris; Romero. Dier, Bastoni; Emerson, Barella, Kessie, Reguilon; Chiesa, Kane, Son

Lloris; Romero. Dier, Bastoni; Emerson, Barella, Hojbjerg, Kessie, Reguilon; Kane, Vlahovic

According to a report in Calciomercato.it, Antonio Conte has given five specific names to the Tottenham hierarchy that he wants to be brought to the club.

Conte seems to be moving increasingly close to replacing Nuno Espirito Santo as the Tottenham head coach, with the Italian currently in London to sort out the final details.

Reports from Italy have indicated that Spurs have agreed to give the 52-year-old a significant transfer budget of more than €100m (£84.6m) in a ‘short time’.

The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick has also revealed that the former Chelsea boss will be given assurances of funds to rebuild the squad.

Meanwhile, Sport Mediaset reported earlier today that Conte wants the signings of three to four players during the January transfer window.

Calciomercato.it have now revealed that the former Inter boss has made ‘very specific requests’ of Tottenham and ‘wants big purchases’.

The report claims that Conte wants to reunite with Marcelo Brozovic and Stefan de Vrij who were part of his Serie A winning squad at the San Siro last season.

Conte has also allegedly asked for the North London club to buy Juventus duo Federico Chiesa and Matthijs de Ligt as well as AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli.

Spurs Web Opinion

One would expect Conte to be specific with his requests and it would not be surprising if he focuses on central defenders and defensive midfielders, given that those two areas of the pitch that are crucial to the way the Italian usually sets his teams up. It will certainly be very interesting to see what Spurs do in January.

Fiorentina Chief Executive Officer, Joe Barone, has confirmed that several English clubs are interested in signing rumoured Spurs target, Federico Chiesa.

Spurs have been linked with a move for Chiesa for over a year with Tuttomercatoweb reporting back in March 2019 that the winger was on Tottenham’s radar. The Sun also reported last year that the wide man was at the top of the Lilywhites’ wanted list.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed another excellent campaign this time out, managing seven goals and five assists in all competitions (transfermarkt).

The silky left-footer, who prefers playing wide on the right, is also said to be on the radar of Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea, according to Goal.com.

Barone admitted that several clubs from England want the Italian international but insisted that the 22-year-old is happy to stay put at Fiorentina.

Speaking to a Gazzetta Dello Sport (as relayed by Goal.com), the Serie A club’s CEO said: “Chiesa is a Fiorentina player.

“There are clubs knocking at the door for Chiesa, some of them who speak English… We’ll see.

“For the moment, we just need to finish the season and he is very concentrated on doing well for us.

“Chiesa has overcome his physical problems and has returned to being what everyone has already seen. Federico is happy, he has a contract. We’ll see at the end of the season.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Chiesa is a top talent but I think it will be a waste of our transfer funds to spend the kind of money it will take to land him when we can get either Ryan Fraser or Willian on a free transfer this summer. We don’t need to be prioritising a move for a winger.

Tottenham Hotspur are no strangers to finalising transfer deals on deadline day. On many occasions in the past the club has waited until the last day possible to announce their new signing – just take Rafael van der Vaart as a prime example.

So far this summer Spurs have made two signings; Jack Clarke, who returned to Leeds on a season-long loan, and Tanguy Ndombele for a club record fee of £55million (Guardian). The early signature of Ndombele allowed the French internatinal to be part of the club’s pre-season tour of the Far East.

Spurs have also been linked with Giovani Lo Celso (BBC), Ryan Sessengnon (Telegraph), and even Paulo Dybala from Juventus (Tuttosport).

A deal to sign Dybala would smash their transfer record for the second time this summer, with the Argentine attacker’s value sitting at approximately £80million (The Sun).

However, in just under two weeks’ time on the 8th August at 5pm, the Premier League transfer window closes.

With the transfer window closing shortly, we look at some of the last-minute transfers that Spurs could still look to complete this summer in our opinion.

Tottenham Hotspur may have been linked with a fair few players this summer, but they have still yet to sign a single fresh face since January 2018.

One man who Spurs have been linked with is speedy Fiorentina winger, Federico Chiesa, who is also said to be a target of Liverpool’s (Tuttomercatoweb).

Chiesa is reportedly worth a whopping £70m this summer, with the 21-year-old also apparently open to a move to London (Sun).

However, if the new Fiorentina owner Rocco Commisso has anything to do with it, Chiesa will remain at the club for years to come.

Commisso is said to want to end the selling club mentality at Fiorentina, starting by making a statement and keeping Chiesa.

However, they may have to fend off interest from around Europe, as Chiesa was a stand out player for Italy during their short stint in the U21 European Championships this summer.

The winger scored an impressive three goals in the group stage alone, including a brace against Spain.

Commisso said (Corriere Dello Sport): “I am confident we can keep him at the club and make him become a club icon. He is a symbol for this team.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

It doesn’t matter what the owner says, because if the price tag really is £70m, Tottenham simply will not pay it. The rumours do not sound likely to me, and in terms of value for money I would rather chase other players, including the bargain Jack Clarke.

Tottenham Hotspur may have moved on since the sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for £86m six years ago, but they have arguably never replaced him.

The Welsh winger was a one-of-a-kind talent in the Premier League and has gone on to win four Champions League trophies with his new club.

During his last two seasons with Spurs, Bale was an unstoppable force both down the wing and through the middle, hence why he caught the eye of the Spanish giants.

However, HITC now report that Spurs may have finally found their Bale replacement in 21-year-old Fiorentina wonderkid, Federico Chiesa.

The Sun reported earlier this year that Chiesa was at the top of Pochettino’s wishlist for the summer, despite the whopping £70m price tag.

These Bale links have been furthered by Fiorentina director Giancarlo Antognoni, who recently told the Telegrafi: “Chiesa has dribbling skills and quality, but also stamina, pace and power. He’s like a young Gareth Bale who drives you crazy and never gives in.”

Could this Italian starlet really be the next Bale, and could Spurs sign him?

Spurs Web Opinion:

Spurs have grown in recent years, but I think they are still some way off bidding £70m for 21-year-olds. There simply isn’t that kind of money in the club, otherwise they would have already secured the likes of Lo Celso and Ndombele. Who knows if this Chiesa could make it big at Spurs, but Fiorentina will have to dramatically drop the price if they want to sell him.

Tottenham Hotspur are reported to be among the clubs who are closely monitoring Fiorentina winger Federico Chiesa.

Chiesa’s impressive displays in Serie A this season have apparently caught the attention of several clubs including Spurs, Chelsea, Juventus, Man Utd, and Inter Milan. (TEAMtalk)

The 22-year-old who broke into Fiorentina’s first team at the start of the 16-17 season is having the best season of his career so far as he has been one of the few shining lights in what has been a poor season for the Viola.

According to reports, the winger who has 12 goals to his name so far this season, will cost around £70 million in the summer, which would be a club-record fee if Daniel Levy is prepared to outlay that kind of money on a player.

A further report in The Mirror claims that Liverpool have also joined the race for Chiesa and will be involved in the battle to land him in the summer.

Given the price mooted for the Italian along with the apparent competition for his signature, it looks like Spurs will likely be forced to look at other options.

Chelsea are reportedly interested in bringing Fiorentina striker Federico Chiesa to the club, however an impending transfer ban may make things tricky (Sun).

The Blues have been banned for breaking rules regarding the signing of youth players, and are subsequently unable to sign any players over the next two transfer windows.

This means that any ‘Chelsea targets’ are now irrelevant, as any other club could swoop in and sign the players themselves, which is perhaps exactly what Tottenham will do (Metro).

Chiesa has scored eleven goals and set up an impressive eight over 29 appearances this season so far for the Italian outfit.

Tottenham have been on the hunt for a class young striker to play second fiddle, or even support Harry Kane for some time now, and this 21-year-old could fit the bill.

Juventus, Inter Milan, and AC Milan are all said to be interested in the forward, who is apparently worth around £70m.

According to a report in the Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing £70 million-rated Fiorentina winger Federico Chiesa.

Chiesa’s fantastic performance in the Serie A this season has apparently caught the attention of several clubs including Spurs, Chelsea, Juventus, and Inter Milan.

Here’s all you need to know about the winger.

Full Name: Federico Chiesa

Age: 21

Club: Fiorentina

Nationality: Italy

Position: Winger/striker/attacking midfielder

Playing Style: Federico Chiesa is an extremely direct player who likes to get on the ball and take people on. While he is prone to losing the ball on many occasions, he is capable of pulling the opposing defence out of shape with his runs. He is also deadly in the counter-attack as he has a knack of releasing players at the right time.

Strengths: Take-ons, agility, balance

Weaknesses: Defensive contribution, predictability

Highlights of His Career: Chiesa broke through into the first team in the 16-17 season and had two solid campaigns as he became an important part of the Fiorentina side. However, he is currently having the best season of his career so far as he has been one of the rare shining lights in what has been a poor season for the Viola. The 21-year-old has notched up 11 goals so far this campaign and has become a regular fixture in the Italian national team.

Rumour rating: C-

While Chiesa would certainly be a great addition to the Spurs squad, he is not quite an urgent requirement at the moment since Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura are both players of similar style. Additionally, the price tag being mooted for the winger makes it unlikely that Spurs will contest for his signature.
