After coming on as a substitute for Wayne Burnett’s men in their clash against Colchester last month, Veliz was handed his first start for the Under-21s on Tuesday.

The striker demonstrated what he is capable of, putting the Lilywhites ahead on 24 minutes, with the centre-forward headed home Jamie Donley’s ‘perfect’ cross.

However, it was a night to forget for the Spurs youngsters as Peterborough emerged 3-1 winners and booked their place in the next round quite comfortably.

According to Rob Guest on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, we should not be surprised to see the 20-year-old taking to the field more often in the near future.

He said: “There’s young Alejo Veliz. We’ve seen a bit of him so far, more than we expected from him. It sounded like he would be a player who was adapting in the first part of the season and playing a part in the coming years.

“But, he’s clearly impressed Postecoglou behind the scenes and he’s gotten some minutes so far, he’s another one we could see a bit more of in the coming weeks.”

Is Veliz the best in the league at heading?

When he does get his big opportunity, we should be keeping a close eye on the deliveries into the box for Veliz. That’s according to his former manager, Adrian Dezotti, who told The Athletic Spurs now have one of the best headers of the ball in the Premier League.

He said: “I watch a lot of English football and there is no other Premier League player who has the aerial game that Alejo has. It’s incredible.”

The same information has now been confirmed by The Athletic, who state that Nottingham Forest, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Roma and AC Milan were all keen on landing the 20-year-old in January.

However, it is explained that Spurs moved swiftly to secure Veliz’s signature ahead of those aforementioned clubs for a deal worth £13m.

The report adds that Fabio Paratici was involved in the signing of the Argentine and that there is hope at the North London club that the youngster could prove as good an acquisition as the likes of Destiny Udogie and Pape Matar Sarr have.

Now it appears Tottenham’s young striker can’t wait to link up with Lo Celso on the pitch, who he reveals made a big effort in helping him to settle in England.

When asked if he is looking forward to playing with Gio, Veliz said (FootballLondon): “Yes, I truly am. Gio also comes from the club where I’m from, of which I’m also a fan. I honestly believe Gio is also very important for Argentina as a player, so yes, I’m looking forward to that moment.”

That’s the opinion of Dan Kirkpatrick at least, who had the following to say on The Tottenham Way podcast.

“Well I think it’s quite interesting and quite intriguing to have [Bryan] Gil and [Giovani] Lo Celso and to an extent [Alejo] Veliz as well potentially being involved more prominently after the international break, Kilpatrick said.

“I’m just kind of interested to see what [Ange] Postecoglou can do with them. I think at the start of the season we were talking about everyone getting a clean slate.

“We’ve seen some players already do pretty spectacular things with that slate, chiefly Bissouma, but more or less everyone who was here last season has improved. We can’t write off Lo Celso and Gil’s chances.”

A video on Spurs PLAY now shows the reaction of the players who were not in the matchday squad.

While Veliz vigorously pushed and pulled the advertising hoardings in front of him, nearly breaking it in the process, Giovani Lo Celso and Rodrigo Bentancur were in disbelief, repeatedly pumping their fists in the air.

The reaction of the players and the fans was absolutely priceless and it was admirable how Ange completely kept his cool and proceeded to organise the back four after a couple of fist pumps despite all the chaos around him.

Alejo Veliz is available for selection for Spurs

Postecoglou admitted last month soon after signing the forward that he would need time to settle into his surroundings and anticipated he would not get any first-team minutes during the first half of the season (Fabrizio Romano).

The Australian has now revealed that Veliz is now available as part of his plans going forward after recovering from the issue.

He told Football.London: “Alejo is finally on the pitch, which is great.

“It was his first session yesterday. He’s been impatient waiting to get started. It was good to have him involved yesterday and he’ll be available from here on as well.”

According to various sources, Spurs saw off competition from several European sides to land the centre-forward this summer (Fabrizio Romano – Here We Go Podcast).

However, Tottenham see the 19-year-old as one for the future rather than as a finished product, with Ange Postecoglou revealing earlier this month that the youngster might not get too many minutes during the first part of the campaign (Football.London).

Loan move on the cards for Alejo Veliz at Spurs

Iugt has now taken to social media to state that although Veliz has not made the matchday squad for Tottenham so far, the striker wants to stay and fight for his place at the North London club this season.

However, the journalist added that the Argentina Under-20 international’s situation remains ‘uncertain’ and that a late loan move to another European club cannot be ruled out.

I suspect Postecoglou might want Veliz to stay at Tottenham and train with the first-team stars at the club during the first half of the campaign so that he gets used to the team’s current style of play.

Perhaps Spurs will look to loan the youngster out to a Championship side for the second part of the season.

He was also one of Argentina’s standout performers in the Under-20 World Cup earlier this year, and some Primera Division experts have even deemed the signing by Spurs as a ‘masterstroke’, given the youngster’s potential (Football.London).

In fact, Fabrizio Romano even revealed on the Here We Go Podcast recently that several European clubs attempted to hijack Tottenham’s move for Veliz just before he was about to fly to London for his medical.

However, the youngster is very much seen as one for the future rather than as a readymade product, with Ange Postecoglou admitting that he is not likely to get much game time during the first part of the season (One Football).

Rosario Central have now revealed that Tottenham have agreed to pay an initial $16.7m (£13.1m) for the teenager and a further $6.4m (£5m) in add-ons.

The £5m figure will be paid incrementally by the North London club after every 15 appearances that Veliz makes for the Lilywhites across all competitions.

£13m for a prospect such as Veliz could prove to be very good business. In Postecoglou, the Argentine has the right sort of coach to develop under but I believe that he will likely need a spell or two out on loan before he is ready to lead the line for Tottenham.

Tottenham sealed the signature of the highly-rated striker from Rosario Central earlier this month with the 19-year-old joining the Lilywhites for a fee in the region of £13million and penned a six-year contract (90min).

The Argentine Under-20 captain was also reported to have been the subject of interest from a number of clubs including AC Milan, AS Roma, Nottingham Forest, and Salernitana.

Romano has claimed that such was the demand to land Veliz, that some clubs on the European continent were in contact with the forward while he was on the way to the airport to board his flight to London asking him to not make the journey such was their eagerness to try to pip Tottenham at the final moments with an improved deal.

Clubs tried to stop Alejo Veliz from joining Spurs

He told Here We Go Podcast: “Let me finish by mentioning Alejo Veliz. Tottenham feel they have signed a very important player. When he was going to the airports, some European clubs were saying ‘wait, don’t travel, we want to try until the end.’

“It was not only Tottenham on this guy. It will take time, he’s not ready to play tomorrow, but he is very talented, they believe they have signed a top talent, a top striker for the future,” 

Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou has already tried to take the pressure off the shoulders of the striker by insisting that fans will have to remain patient before they see him in first-team action.

He told Football.London: “It will be a while for him, I think. We’ve just got to let him settle, he’s come halfway around the world.

“He’s a young guy, it’s a fairly different level. He’s one we’ll invest in in the long-term but I wouldn’t expect him to see any minutes in the first part of the season.”

It is great to see Tottenham looking to sign top talent once again, with the work which Fabio Paratici did to bring in the likes of Pape Matar Sarr and Destiny Udogie for relatively low transfer fees having already looked to have paid dividends given their performances in the opening two matches of the new season. 

Hopefully, Veliz will be given the time he needs to adapt and become another shrewd signing further down he line.
