The Athletic have revealed that despite rumoured Tottenham target Conor GallagHer having been a regular in Chelsea’ starting eleven this season, the Blues hierarchy are willing to cash in on the midfielder.
It was widely reported leading up to transfer deadline day that Spurs were planning to offload Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and make a late move to sign Gallagher (The Times).
In fact, The Guardian even asserted a day before the window slammed shut that amidst Tottenham’s late interest, there was a ‘strong chance’ that the 23-year-old would leave Stamford Bridge before the window slammed shut.
However, Gallagher remained at Chelsea while Spurs were also unable to offload Hojbjerg before the deadline.
It was asserted by Football Insider on September 4 that the deal fell through because the Lilywhites were only willing to offer £40m for the midfielder while the West London club were holding out for £45m.
Will Chelsea sell Conor Gallagher to Spurs
It remains to be seen if Tottenham go back in for Gallagher in January but if The Athletic’s latest update is to be believed, Chelsea would be open to selling the midfielder.
The report adds that even though the England international has been a regular in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting eleven this season, the youngster is ‘more valued for his potential sale price than his on-pitch contributions’ by the Stamford Bridge hierarchy.
Spurs Web Opinion
Much like Brennan Johnson, I suspect it is Postecoglou who was the main driver of Tottenham’s interest in Conor Gallagher during the summer transfer window. I fully expect Spurs to reignite their interest in the Chelsea star in January if they manage to offload Hojbjerg.
