The agent of Destiny Udogie, Stefano Antonelli, says that his client is keen to prove to Luciano Spalletti that he is ready to play for the Italian national side.

While there was plenty of excitement at Spurs about Udogie prior to this season, the youngster has taken many by surprise by how easily he has made the transition to the Premier League and adapted to the demands of the inverted full-back role in Ange Postecoglou’s system.

Some pundits have predicted that the youngster has the potential to develop into one of the best in the world in his position (Micky Hazard) and his performances have not gone unnoticed back in his home country.

In fact, in their editorial last week, Gazzetta dello Sport praised Udogie’s ‘boldness’, adding that the 20-year-old is on his way to becoming ‘one of the young revelations’ of the Premier League season.

Udogie wants to prove himself at the top level

The Spurs man has got his first call-up to the Azzurri set-up for their upcoming qualifiers against Malta and England, and Antonelli believes that the left-back is ready to showcase what he can do.

When asked about Udogie’s call-up, he told Sport Italia: “It’s the crowning achievement of many things. He’ll turn 21 on the 28th of November, he has almost 80 games in Serie A and in the Premier League, he is 7 for 7.

“The football critics expected his call-up as if it were almost a foregone conclusion. Here, however, there is nothing taken for granted: when you get to the national team, you also get to touch the peak of your ambitions and objectives.

“It is an important goal, he knows who Spalletti is and he knows the coach’s way of playing. He’s looking forward to representing Italy. With all the calmness, now that he has arrived there he will have to prove that he deserves it.”

It remains to be seen if Udogie will start either clash during the international break but I have no doubt that the youngster will catch Spalletti’s eye in training, and I expect him to be a regular in the Italy squad for now on.
