After bagging his first goal for Tottenham Hotspur, James Maddison has explained why he alone cannot replace Harry Kane and insisted it will require a team effort to fill the void.
In what has ultimately been a summer of great transition at Tottenham this year, new boss Ange Postecoglou has had to find a way to deal with the loss of star striker Harry Kane who joined Bayern Munich earlier this month.
So far, the Lilywhites appear to be coping pretty well without their talismanic forward. A draw against Brentford in the first game of the season was followed up by a brilliant win over Manchester United last weekend.
Postecoglou’s men made it back-to-back wins with a 2-0 victory over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium with the England international catching the eye and scored a deserved first goal for the North Londoners when he ran in behind the Cherries defence to latch onto Pape Matar Sarr’s pass to guide the ball into the back of the net.
James Maddison cannot replace Harry Kane
However, the suggestion that Maddison can replace Harry Kane at the club has been dismissed by the man himself.
Maddison told the BBC: “It’s tough if you’re asking me to try and get 30 goals! It’s a collective. You can’t even look to replace what Harry Kane gives you. You’ve got to all chip in and look to try and score the same amount of goals from different areas.
“Harry is probably the best number nine in the world, you will never find a direct replacement in terms of goals and what he can give you. We should all be chipping in. We’ve got the bit between our teeth. We have some momentum, so long may that continue, and hopefully we can still implement the final steps the gaffer wants to see, which is attacking football.”
Spurs Web Opinion
James Maddison is already offering us something that Kane never really did, and something we have lacked for years, and that is a bit of dynamism and magic in the middle of the park. He won’t score 30 goals a season, but he has invigorated this team beyond belief.
