Roberto De Zerbi has confirmed that rumoured Tottenham target Robert Sanchez is no longer training with the Brighton first team.

The writing appears on the wall for Hugo Lloris, with reports over the last couple of weeks indicating that Tottenham are expected to sign a new number one who is good with the ball at his feet and that the Frenchman is not likely to stick around as an understudy (The Athletic).

One man who could fit the bill is Robert Sanchez, who is rumoured to be one of the goalkeepers on Spurs’ wishlist ahead of the summer transfer window (Football Insider).

The Spaniard lost his number-one spot to Jason Steele a couple of months ago, having been restricted to very few appearances since March.

It was reported by talkSPORT last month that the Segulls are expected to listen to offers for the 25-year-old this summer.

De Zerbi has now confirmed that Sanchez is no longer playing a part in his first-team plans as the goalkeeper does not wish to be.

Ahead of his side’s trip to Newcastle, the Italian told The Daily Mail: “With Robert, we spoke before the Arsenal game and we decided together the best solution was to stay home.”

When asked why Sanchez is not training with the Brighton first team, De Zerbi responded: “He decides everything. Robert decides, and at the moment, it’s like this. He wanted it this way, not me, not the club.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The fact that Sanchez has lost his place to Steele is not a ringing endorsement of his quality.

While Spurs might consider the Spaniard as someone who could potentially offer competition between the sticks, I doubt they would view the 25-year-old as someone who can take over the gloves from Hugo Lloris.
