Alasdair Gold has revealed that other clubs were impressed by Tottenham’s capture of Yves Bissouma from Brighton last summer.
Bissouma had emerged as one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League over the previous two to three years at Brighton, with many even considering them to be the most important player in Graham Potter‘s set-up at the South Coast.
When Spurs snapped up the midfielder for £25m plus add-ons last summer, many would have seen it as a real coup and the Tottenham fans would have expected the 26-year-old to hit the ground running in North London.
However, the Mali international has endured a frustrating first season at Spurs, struggling to get starts in the first half of the campaign before picking up an ankle injury in February which put him out of action until the final two matches of the season.
Bissouma is still a shrewd signing by Spurs
Gold has remarked that Bissouma’s struggles came as a surprise not just to Spurs but also to outsiders, with many in the game being impressed by the signing last summer.
The journalist said on The Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast: “When Bissouma signed for Spurs in the summer, a lot of people, even outside the club and at other clubs said ‘fair play, that’s some really good business there’
“Questions were asked about how Brighton would respond after losing him, but they’ve been fine. For Spurs, he should’ve been a much bigger addition than he has been.”

The struggles of both Bissouma and Richarlison have come as a huge surprise since both players are proven performers in the Premier League.
Antonio Conte and his coaching staff certainly need to take a lot of the blame for the pair’s struggles and I have no doubts that both players will prove their worth next season.
