Journalist Graeme Bailey has admitted that he is shocked Tottenham Hotspur did not push harder to sign David Raya, who is now joining their North London rivals, Arsenal.

It was widely reported at the start of the summer that Raya was Tottenham’s top target to replace Hugo Lloris, with the Lilywhites even alleged to have agreed personal terms with the 27-year-old (The Times).

However, it emerged midway into June that Spurs were set to turn their attention to other alternatives as Brentford were unwilling to drop their asking price of £40m for their number one, even though he had just a year left on his contract (90 min).

Spurs then quickly managed to wrap up a deal worth £16.4m with Empoli for Guglielmo Vicario, who will take over the gloves from Lloris.

It was even asserted by Fabrizio Romano on The Debrief Podcast a couple of weeks ago that Raya was ‘excited’ about the possibility of moving to Tottenham before the deal eventually fell through.

Spurs could come to regret missing out on David Raya

The Spaniard is now on his way to Arsenal, with the Gunners said to have agreed a deal to sign the goalkeeper on loan with a £27m buy option after he signed a one-year contract extension with Brentford (Goal).

Bailey believes that Spurs will regret not getting a deal for Raya over the line this summer.

The journalist said on Talking Transfers Podcast: “He’s (Raya) taken the chance (to join Arsenal). He believes he will be able to usurp Aaron Ramsdale. I don’t think he will. I’m slightly surprised.

“I’m still amazed that Tottenham didn’t push that one over the line, one they might live to regret I think.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The swiftness with which Spurs moved for Vicario suggests that the Italian goalkeeper was on the club’s radar for a while.

I suspect that Tottenham pushed ahead with a move for the 26-year-old as they feared that Inter would pursue him once Andre Onana departed the San Siro.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank has pointed to the transfer fees being reported for Harry Kane as evidence as to why David Raya is worth £40m in the current market.

Spurs then quickly managed to wrap up a deal worth £16.4m for the Italian goalkeeper, but it has now emerged that Raya is a target for their North London rivals, Arsenal, who are expected to launch an offer of £15m for the Spaniard (Daily Mail).

Brentford still want £40m for David Raya

However, Frank has now reiterated that the goalkeeper is worth £40m despite his contract situation.

When asked about Raya, the Brentford boss said (via Keith Dowie): “He’s worth £40m. He was one of the four best keepers in the PL last season.

“What is the fair price for a player with one year left? Declan Rice went to Arsenal for £105m? And Harry Kane, they’re talking about £150m?”

Spurs Web Opinion

From the manner in which Brentford are playing hardball with Raya, it seems like Tottenham certainly made the right decision to turn their attention to Vicario rather than waiting for the West London club to soften their stance.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that David Raya was really excited about joining Tottenham earlier in the summer but Brentford’s unrelenting stance made the Lilywhites turn their attention to Guglielmo Vicario.

It was widely reported at the start of the summer that Raya was Tottenham’s top target to replace Hugo Lloris and that the North London club had even agreed personal terms with the 27-year-old (The Times).

David Raya

However, it emerged midway into June that Spurs were set to turn their attention to other alternatives, including Vicario, as Brentford were unwilling to drop their asking price of £40m for their number one, even though he had just a year left on his contract (90 min).

Spurs then quickly managed to wrap up a deal worth £16.4m for the Italian goalkeeper, with Empoli president Fabrizio Corsi later revealing that the Lilywhites beat ‘two top Italian clubs’ to the 26-year-old’s signature (Football Italia).

David Raya was really keen on Tottenham transfer

Romano has now explained that Raya came quite close to sealing a move to N17 and that the Spaniard was keen on making the switch before the deal collapsed.

The journalist told The Debrief Podcast: “David Raya was really close to Tottenham, the reality is that in terms of personal terms, it was agreed. Raya was prepared to make his move to Tottenham.

“He was really excited by that possibility and then Tottenham were not happy with the situation with Brentford, they were always asking for £40m for a player who was out of contract next summer, they were convinced they would reduce the asking price, but this didn’t happen.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While Raya was seemingly Tottenham’s top target, I suspect that the club were always also keeping an eye on the Vicario situation.

Once they saw that Brentford were happy for the situation to drag on and realised that Inter were planning an approach for the Empoli star, they wasted no time in swiftly concluding a deal for the Italian.

According to journalist Lyall Thomas, reports that David Raya was Tottenham’s top goalkeeper target this summer may be inaccurate, as Guglielmo Vicario was actually the primary objective.

Spurs were caught lacking at the back far too many times last season, and with 63 goals conceded in the 2022/23 campaign, changes needed to be made this summer.

New Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has wasted little time in repairing the faltering squad he has inherited. The acquisition of long-term target James Maddison has many fans excited.

However, after Hugo Lloris’ drastic decline, it is the signing of a new goalkeeper in Guglielmo Vicario that may well prove to be the most important addition to the Lilywhites’ squad.

Spurs had seemingly set their sights on Brentford keeper David Raya and had agreed personal terms with the Spaniard, but were unable to find middle ground on the Bees’ £40m valuation of the player (Evening Standard).

Vicario was the top target for Spurs, not David Raya

Despite many reports claiming Raya was the top target, Lyall Thomas has countered that by revealing Vicario was actually the number one choice for Spurs.

He told Last Word on Spurs: “I think he’s going to be a good player. He was arguably the best keeper in Italy outside the top teams last season. And actually, I understand that he was the first choice for Tottenham.

“I know a lot was said about David Raya being the first choice. But I think a lot of that was putting two and two together based on the season Raya had had.

“And there was interest in him, the club were big fans of his. But I understand that actually Vicario was the first choice and the one they wanted to go for.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Guglielmo Vicario was definitely on Tottenham’s radar this summer anyway, and with our strong scouting network in Italy it wouldn’t be surprising if he was actually the top choice.

Tottenham were in dire need of a new goalkeeper this summer, given the rather drastic decline in form for current number one Hugo Lloris last season.

The Frenchman is expected to be displaced as the first-choice stopper at Spurs for next season, and the 36-year-old has even admitted he is ready to take on a new challenge elsewhere (Nice-Matin).

Since the end of last season, it appeared Brentford’s David Raya would be the man to succeed Lloris in the Spurs goal. Personal terms were agreed with the Spaniard but settling on a fee with the Bees was proving difficult (The Times).

Unwilling to pay the £40m asking price, Spurs moved on to other targets and very swiftly wrapped up a deal for Guglielmo Vicario. According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham have paid Empoli €19m (£16.3m) for the Italian keeper.

Tottenham got a good deal for Vicario

The move to bring Guglielmo Vicario to North London was a great bit of business and ultimately saved Spurs around £24m compared to what they could have paid for Raya.

Sean Walsh has heard good things, as the journalist tells the Talking Transfers podcast: “Vicario of Empoli, he was very much seen as the second-best goalkeeper in Italy last season behind Mike Maignan.

“Everyone I’ve spoken to says that this is a bit of a steal, £20m it will be for him.”

Walsh admits he hasn’t “seen enough of [Vicario]” to judge for himself, and also reveals he is “devastated” Spurs were unable to sign Raya.

Spurs Web Opinion

Raya was my first choice but £40m was way more than we should have been paying for a keeper in the final year of his contract, and the money saved on signing Vicario can be put to good use in other areas now.

Journalist Paul Brown has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur made a mistake by choosing to pursue Guglielmo Vicario rather than Brentford’s David Raya.

At the start of the window, all indications were that Raya was Tottenham’s number one target to take over the gloves from Hugo Lloris but the Lilywhites reportedly decided to move on to other alternatives since the Bees were not willing to lower their £40m asking price (90 min).

Spurs subsequently agreed on a deal worth €19m (£16.4m) with Empoli for Vicario (Guardian), who has emerged as one of the best goalkeepers in the Serie A over the last couple of years.

According to some reports, many in Italy believe that the 26-year-old is capable of becoming one of the best in the world while Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou is delighted with his acquisition (London World).

Vicario revealed after joining the north Londoners that Postecoglou had explained his reasons for bringing him to the club.

He told the Tottenham’s official website: “I spoke with him, and he told me the keeper is so important with his attacking mentality. He wants to dominate the game. I love this mentality. It will be a big chance for me.

“I think we need to fight a lot. We have to take the best for the club.

‘I don’t want to make specific goals, because we have to focus day by day. If we work a lot, follow the coach, I think we can reach a lot of goals. We are a big team of big players. For me, the team is amazing.”

Spurs should have stuck with a move for David Raya

However, Brown believes that Raya was clearly the best option on the market and that Levy simply went for a cheaper alternative.

When asked about Vicario’s impending arrival at Spurs, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “Nothing surprises me about Daniel Levy and Tottenham. Clearly, he wasn’t willing to pay a big fee for Raya.

“I don’t think Tottenham have a whole lot of money to spend this summer and didn’t want to pump a load of their budget into a new goalkeeper.

“So from that point of view, I suppose you can understand it. But I do think he was clearly the best option on the market.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Whatever one thinks of Vicario, Raya was ridiculously overpriced at £40m, given that he only had a year left to run on his contract with Brentford.

Spurs clearly decided not to waste time as Postecoglou might have wanted a goalkeeper to come in before the start of pre-season.  There was also the risk of Inter Milan potentially making a move for Vicario if Andre Onana left.

As negotiations to sign David Raya from Brentford drag on, it seems Tottenham Hotspur have now started to look elsewhere in the form of Empoli’s goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Spurs are on the hunt for a new number-one goalkeeper to replace Hugo Lloris. The Frenchman has suffered a drastic drop in form in the last year and is now expected to be one of the players to leave Tottenham this summer as Ange Postecoglou looks to revamp his squad (Telegraph).

David Raya

(Photo by Aitor Alcalde – UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images)

Since the end of the season, it has appeared that David Raya would be the man to replace Lloris.

Fabrizio Romano recently told GiveMeSport that Spurs were ‘confident’ of finalising a deal for the Spanish stopper.

While personal terms have been agreed with the player, Tottenham are thought to be reluctant to meet Brentford’s £40 million asking price for the 27-year-old (The Times).

As a result, Raya has apparently been informed that Spurs are looking at other alternatives for their goalkeeping problem (90 Min).

Guglielmo Vicario confirmed as a Spurs target

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio confirmed today that Empoli’s Guglielmo Vicario is one of the names on the list of alternatives that Tottenham Hotspur are exploring this summer.

Vicario is described as “one of the best goalkeepers of the last Serie A season,” and it seems the buzz surrounding the player has stretched to the Premier League as Spurs are now thought to be “very interested” in acquiring his services.

It was claimed Tottenham were keen to know if any prospective “negotiation can be unlocked quickly” as the Lilywhites put in place a contingency plan in case the move for Raya fails to materialise.

And now Di Marzio has provided another update on the situation, claiming that a €20m (£17.2m) agreement in principle has been reached between Spurs and Empoli for Vicario. Empoli are now just waiting for the official written offer to arrive in the coming hours.

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s good that we are looking at other options to cover our backs in case the Raya deal falls through, but he would still be my number-one choice this summer.

That said, Vicario is a talented keeper and we are definitely paying attention to the right kind of players it seems.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have begun work on a potential deal to sign Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

It has widely been reported over the past couple of weeks that David Raya is Tottenham’s top target to take over the gloves from Hugo Lloris but we relayed a report from 90 min recently, which claimed that Spurs are prepared to turn their attention to other alternatives.

Giorgi Mamardashvili

The publication claimed that the Lilywhites had informed Raya’s representatives that since Brentford are not willing to lower their asking price, they are now set to analyse the other options on the market.

The report named Mamardashvili as one of four other goalkeepers on the wishlist of the North London club.

Romano has now also taken to social media to confirm the same, stating that Tottenham consider the Bees’ £40m asking price to be too high.

The journalist asserted that Spurs have now ‘started contacts’ over a deal for Mamardashvili and want to find out the conditions that would have to be met to snap up the Valencia number one.

Spurs Web Opinion

Mamardashvili is clearly one of the best goalkeeping prospects in Europe and at 22 years of age, he could potentially be our number one for over a decade if we snap him up this summer.

However, with the Georgian international having four years left on his contract at the Mestalla, he is unlikely to come cheap either.

90 min have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have informed David Raya that they are looking at alternative goalkeeping options this summer since Brentford are not willing to lower their asking price.

The publication claims that the Bees have not shown any inclination to relax their demands of £40m for Raya even though he just has one year left on his contract.

David Raya

While the Spaniard remains the Lilywhites’ top target, it is alleged that they are not willing to pay that sum.

Tottenham are looking beyond David Raya

With Tottenham no closer to agreeing a fee with Brentford, it is revealed that they are now ready to assess alternative goalkeepers on the market.

90 min claim that Spurs are keeping Raya and his representatives informed of the latest developments, and have communicated to them that they are now looking at other options.

The publication reveals that Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is one of the alternatives on Tottenham’s radar but he is also wanted by Inter Milan, Juventus, AS Roma and Fiorentina this summer.

Brighton’s Robert Sanchez, Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili and Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel are said to be some of the other names on Spurs’ wishlist.

Spurs Web Opinion

This is likely a tactic by Tottenham to get Brentford to lower their asking price. It makes little sense to pay £40m for the Spaniard, given that he has just one year left on his contract.

With Manchester United and Chelsea seemingly prioritising moves for other goalkeepers, the Bees do not have much choice but to lower their demands over the coming weeks.

The Evening Standard have suggested that Chelsea could be the latest club to enter the race to sign Tottenham target David Raya.

It was reported by The Times last week that Spurs had struck an agreement on personal terms with Raya but it was explained that the North London club had no intention of meeting Brentford’s asking price of £40m for their number one.

David Raya

However, a couple of days ago, Football Insider suggested that Manchester United could hijack Tottenham’s move for the Spaniard.

The outlet stated that the 27-year-old is ‘admired’ by the recruitment chiefs at Old Trafford, who are looking to bring in a goalkeeper who can offer competition for David De Gea.

It was alleged that Raya is viewed by the club as someone who fits Erik Ten Hag’s profile due to his ability to play out from the back under pressure.

Chelsea enter the race for Brentford’s David Raya

If The Evening Standard’s latest update is to be believed, the Brentford number one is also on the radar of Chelsea.

The publication states that the Blues have now ended their interest in Inter Milan goalkeeper, Andre Onana, who was previously their top target, with Raya said to be one of the other alternatives on the West London club’s wishlist.

Spurs Web Opinion

While it is not surprising that Raya is on the radars of both Chelsea and Manchester United, it does not appear as if he is the number one target for either club.

So, for the moment, Tottenham seem to have a relatively free run at the Spaniard but things could change quite quickly.

Football Insider have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are ‘determined’ to ensure that they land David Raya at a fraction of the fee Brentford are currently demanding.

It has been widely reported over the last week that even though Spurs have agreed personal terms with Raya, they have no intention of meeting Brentford’s asking price of £40m (The Times).

The Daily Mail even claimed on June 13 that the Bees are not willing to lower their demands and could decide to let the Spaniard rot on the bench next season if they do not get the fee they are looking for.

Spurs and Man United playing hardball with Raya

However, this information has now been contradicted by Football Insider, who suggests that Spurs are of the belief that they can land the goalkeeper for a much lower fee.

The publication reveals that neither Tottenham nor Manchester United, who also have their eye on Raya, are prepared to meet Brentford’s £40m valuation.

It is asserted that both clubs are engaging in a level of ‘brinkmanship’ as they negotiate for the 27-year-old because they both know Thomas Frank’s men will not risk losing their number one on a free transfer next summer, particularly since they have already signed Mark Flekken from Freiburg.

Spurs Web Opinion

Brentford would likely relax their demands as we get deeper into the transfer window but the question for Spurs is whether they are willing to wait and risk another club swooping for the Spaniard.

I suspect that an offer of around £30m right now would be enough to tempt the Bees from cashing in on their number one.

There is no doubt that the Spurs defence was incredibly weak last season, leaking the most goals out of any team in the top 10. This was the defining factor for Spurs’ lacklustre season.

In the season gone by, Spurs conceded 63 goals – this was simply not the standard for any team looking to get into Europe. Spurs finished with over 60 goals scored and conceded. The last team to do this was also Spurs in the 2007/08 season (BBC).

Antonio Conte

(Photo by ISABEL INFANTES/AFP via Getty Images)

The blame cannot solely lie with the formation, as Antonio Conte’s teams have historically been defensively strong in the shape used at Spurs. During his time at Chelsea in 2016/17, they conceded 33 goals, a far better defensive record than Spurs this year (Fotmob).

The players in Tottenham’s defence have been heavily criticised over the last three seasons, yet little has changed. Since Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld left Spurs, the defence has been consistently weak.

The rebuild under Ange Postecoglou will see the shift to a 433 formation. This does not currently suit the Spurs defence, and it will lead to a number of outgoings and some new talent coming to Hotspur Way.

One outgoing could be Eric Dier (Fabrizio Romano). He has been a regular starter in Spurs’ defence since José Mourinho decided he would be best suited as a centre-back. Since the position change, Dier has been inconsistent in his performances, with this year by far being his worst season in Lilywhite.

Another likely exit will be Davison Sanchez, who has also had a disappointing season. The 27-year-old has only featured in 18 Premier League games (Fotmob).

In each one, he received extensive criticism for his underwhelming performances. Against Bournemouth, he came on for an injured Clement Lenglet, and he was booed off after only 23 minutes.

Ivan Perišić could be a victim of the rebuild under Postecoglou. Perišić has had a mixed season where he was Spurs’ best creator with 8 assists in the premier league (Fotmob), yet his defending let him down on numerous occasions. Due to this, it’s unlikely that he will be used as a left-back, and therefore he could be sold.

For Ryan Sessengon, it looks like his time is up. Last season, we saw him lose his spot to Perišić, and he then struggled with injuries for a large majority of the season.

When Sessengon was purchased from Fulham, it looked like we had a future star on our hands, but unfortunately, his light has burned out and he could be replaced by another young wingback, Destiny Udogie.

Japhet Tanganga could look for a move this summer. Tanganga has not received the game time he would like, and when he has played, he has looked rusty. We saw this in the 4-1 loss to Leicester, where Leicester ran rings around the Spurs backline.

Hugo Lloris will most likely leave Spurs in this transfer window. The club captain has made 447 appearances for Spurs and, despite his poor form of late, will go down as a Spurs legend.

Due to the extensive list of outgoings for Spurs this summer, Postecoglou will have to reinforce the backline.

Christian Romero looks like the obvious starter at centre-back; he will most likely be supported by Pedro Porro and Udogie on the flanks. If Postecoglou looks for a more conservative model, he will favour Emerson Royal on the right-hand side.

One transfer that looks to be gaining traction and could be completed very soon is David Raya (Fabrizio Romano). The Brentford keeper had a stellar season and he could be the heir to Lloris’s throne.

Options at the back – Starting with Aymeric Laporte

The spot Spurs will have to reinforce is the left centre-back. Over the years, Spurs have just patched over this position due to the rare and costly nature of a left-footed centre-back. Nevertheless, we will have to invest this year if we want a firm backbone for Postecoglou’s rebuild.

A great option would be Aymeric Laporte. The Manchester City centre-back hasn’t featured as much as he would have liked this season due to the arrival of Manuel Akanji and the form of Nathan Ake.

Man City are working hard to purchase Josko Gvardiol (Fabrizio Romano), which would likely see the end of Laporte’s tenure at Man City (Sport.ES).

Laporte would be a perfect signing for Spurs, as he is an elite-level defender who has shown clear leadership for the Spanish national team. Where he lacks pace, Romero could make up for it. With these two in the Spurs defence, Postecoglou could have a formidable duo.

Pau Torres has been forever linked with Spurs (Football Transfers), with constant transfer sagas across different windows. Right now would be the perfect time to cash in on him as his contract expires next year. However, he could be tempted by his former manager, Unai Emery, at Aston Villa.

A younger and cheaper alternative could be Roger Ibanez. The 24-year-old defender has thrived at Roma under Mourihno.

Despite his age, he has started in 32 games, putting in consistent performances. One issue is that he is right-footed but nevertheless, he has played most of his games on the left side.

No matter what the choice, Spurs will have to invest. One can only hope that Levy does this properly instead of papering over the cracks that have been apparent since the departure of the Belgium wall of Vertonghen and Alderweireld.

Fabrizio Romano reports there is confidence at Tottenham Hotspur that David Raya will walk through the doors at Hotspur Way this summer.

It was reported by multiple sources last week that while Spurs have struck an agreement with Raya on personal terms, the club are unwilling to meet Brentford’s asking price of £40m for their number one (The Times).

However, Football Insider revealed on Saturday that Tottenham’s pursuit of the Spaniard could be hijacked by Manchester United.

The publication asserted that the Brentford star has many admirers among the United recruitment team and is viewed as the perfect profile for Erik Ten Hag, given his ability to play out from the back under pressure.

Romano provides David Raya update for Spurs fans

Romano has now assuaged Spurs fans’ fears by insisting that the Lilywhites are confident they will get the Raya deal over the line since all parties want the move to go through.

When asked about Tottenham’s pursuit of the Spaniard, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “For David Raya, they are confident.

“I think when all parties want the same, Brentford have already signed a new goalkeeper, the player wants to go, he’s not extending the contract and Tottenham want him.

“When they all want the same, I think there is a good chance to make the deal happen.”

Spurs Web Opinion

One gets the feeling that Raya is one of many goalkeepers on Man Utd’s wishlist while Tottenham have made him their number-one target to replace Hugo Lloris.

Hopefully, that would help persuade the 27-year-old that he would be better off moving to the North London club.

Football Insider have revealed that Manchester United are ready to hijack Tottenham’s move for Brentford number one David Raya.

It was reported by The Times last week that Spurs had struck an agreement on personal terms with Raya but it was explained that the North London club had no intention of meeting Brentford’s asking price of £40m for their number one.

The 27-year-old stated a couple of days ago that he is seeking a new challenge away from the Bees, admitting that he dreams of competing for trophies and playing in Europe (The Times).

Man United are ready to fight Spurs for David Raya

If Football Insider’s latest update is to be believed, Manchester United are now ready to push forward with a move for Raya.

The outlet states that the Spaniard is ‘admired’ by the recruitment chiefs at Old Trafford, who are looking to bring in a goalkeeper who can offer competition for David De Gea.

It is alleged that Raya is viewed by the club as someone who fits Erik Ten Hag’s profile due to his ability to play out from the back under pressure.

The report adds that the Red Devils face ‘strong competition from Spurs for the Brentford number one’s signature.

Spurs Web Opinion

The fact that Raya is considered homegrown (owing to spending three years with Blackburn before turning 21) will undoubtedly make him a very lucrative option to any Premier League club looking for a goalkeeper.

I would not be surprised if Chelsea also enter the race for the Brentford star over the coming days. So, it would be in Tottenham’s interest to wrap up the deal quickly, even if it means paying a premium.

However, it was explained that the Lilywhites were still a distance away from agreeing on a fee with Brentford, with Thomas Frank’s men said to be demanding £40m for their number one despite the fact that he only has a year left on his contract.

Spurs are not the 27-year-old’s only admirers, with The Telegraph reporting a few days ago that Manchester United are also monitoring the goalkeeper.

Tottenham want to pay £30m for David Raya

Football Insider have now also confirmed that Raya has agreed on a contract with Tottenham, with the outlet revealing that the club have offered the Spaniard nearly £100,000-a-week, which is around three times more than what he is earning at Brentford.

The report adds that Ange Postecoglou’s men are now in talks over a transfer fee with Brentford, with a deal said to be ‘edging closer’.

It is said that even though the Bees are continuing to demand £40m, Spurs are hoping to strike a deal for around £30m.

Spurs Web Opinion

Brentford are not in a strong bargaining position due to Raya having just 12 months left on his contract but the Bees might be prepared to play the waiting game to see if other clubs express their interest in the goalkeeper.

So, Tottenham face a dilemma on whether to pay a premium for the 27-year-old or wait for a few more weeks until Brentford lower their demand, thus potentially risking some other club hijacking the deal.

David Raya has spoken out about the situation regarding his future at Brentford after reports claiming he has agreed personal terms with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Spanish keeper has been one of the stars of Brentford‘s rise to the Premier League and their successful two-year stint in the top flight.

The Bees recorded an impressive ninth-placed finish last season and Raya was at the heart of that achievement.

Raya has just one year left on his current contract now and appears to be ready to move on this summer, but it is proving to be more complicated than first expected.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly at the front of the queue to sign the 27-year-old, with Fabrizio Romano claiming the North London side have already agreed personal terms with Raya.

However, Brentford have placed a £40 million valuation on their star keeper and do not appear to be budging. The Telegraph state Spurs are reluctant to meet that asking price.

David Raya speaks out amid Tottenham links

Now, David Raya himself has spoken on the matter in a new piece from The Times, and while he is clearly keen to move on, the player has insisted he would be professional if he is to remain at Brentford.

He said: “I will always feel close to this team. Being part of the promotion to the Premier League is something I will never forget. I know there are rumours about me leaving.

“There are some options for me to go but obviously, Brentford are asking for a lot of money.

“That could make clubs not want to buy me, it could make them look somewhere else. But if that’s the value they give me then it’s up to them. I have a year left on my contract and until then I’m a Brentford player, there’s nothing I can do.

“I have ambitions to make the next step in my career. I want to try to win titles and to compete in Europe in the next couple of years.

“I’m 27 now and I feel like I’m at the point in my career when I want to make that step up. There are options out there but it’s not just my ambitions, the club also needs to let me go.”

On what he would do if a move does not materialise, Raya added: “I’m a professional. If I end up staying at Brentford I will always give my all, that’s my job. If I have to stay, I’ll try to have an even better season than last season.”

Spurs Web Opinion

David Raya clearly wants to leave Brentford and judging by the fact he has agreed personal terms with us, he wants that deal with Spurs to come to fruition.

I really hope we can get that fee agreed soon and confirm the transfer.

Tottenham Hotspur are thought to be close to securing the signing of David Raya if they can just agree on a fee with Brentford for the goalkeeper, but Ben Jacobs claims everybody in the footballing world knows the player’s £40 million price tag is ‘too high’.

After a dismal campaign for Hugo Lloris, it appears the current Spurs number one and club captain will be moving on this summer. The player himself has admitted to Nice-Matin that he is ready to take on a new challenge.

David Raya

In their hunt for a new man between the sticks, it seems Tottenham have landed on Brentford‘s Spanish stopper David Raya.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur have already agreed personal terms with the 27-year-old and are now working on securing the deal by agreeing a fee with the Bees.

The problem is, Thomas Frank is adamant he wants £40 million for Raya, despite the keeper being in the last year of his contract. A report from The Telegraph claims Tottenham are reluctant to meet this valuation.

Everyone agrees £40m is too high for David Raya

In his latest appearance on The Last Word on Spurs podcast, Ben Jacobs suggests Tottenham are right to baulk at the asking price set by Brentford.

He said: “Thomas Frank has said very openly that £40 million is the number, but the industry, not just Spurs, the wider industry that is looking, everyone thinks £40 million is too high.

“Let’s see how bullish Brentford are and if Tottenham can get something a little bit cheaper because if they agree a fee Raya will join Spurs because he’s perfectly happy with the personal terms.”

Spurs Web Opinion

£40 million is definitely more than we should be paying for a player in the final year of his contract, but unfortunately, that decision and that valuation is down to Brentford and Brentford alone.

We either need to crack down on the negotiations, or pay up. Either way, we have to secure the signing soon.

Julien Laurens has said that while he rates David Raya as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, the likes of Tottenham and Manchester United should not be paying £40m for the Brentford number one.

It now appears clear that Raya is Tottenham’s top target to take over the gloves from Hugo Lloris, with The Times reporting on Sunday that the Lilywhites have agreed on personal terms with the Brentford goalkeeper.

David Raya

However, the report explained that Ange Postecoglou’s men are still some way off from agreeing on a fee with the Bees, who are standing firm on their valuation of £40m.

This information was also backed up by talkSPORT, who claimed on Monday that Spurs are trying to convince Brentford to lower their asking price.

The outlet asserted that Raya was putting pressure on the Bees hierarchy to allow him to move to the North London club.

However, Tottenham are not the only club thought to have their eye on the Spaniard, with The Telegraph revealing on Tuesday that Man Utd are also monitoring the goalkeeper’s situation.

Spurs should not pay more than £30m for David Raya

Laurens has now opined that neither Spurs nor the Red Devils should pay more than £30m for the 27-year-old.

When asked about the speculation over Raya’s future, the journalist told ESPN FC: “I think he is great. Really, really good. One of the best goalkeepers in the league. Both with his feet and his hands.

“But £40m? Come on! This is the goalkeeper market we are talking about. I know, for example, Dibu Martinez left Arsenal for Aston Villa for about £20m. Okay, if that’s the ballpark – I think £30m is fair.

“I would take Raya at Manchester United, 100%. But are you ready to pay £40m for a goalkeeper when you have other positions (you have to sort out) and Spurs are the same?

“You can’t just put £40m on a goalkeeper if it means there isn’t much for other positions, especially at centre-back, where they really have to strengthen and strengthen well.”

Spurs Web Opinion

With Raya having just one year left on his contract, Brentford are not in a strong bargaining position.

They will be hoping that a bidding war ensues for their number one but if Man Utd decide to look elsewhere for a new goalkeeper, the West London club will have no choice but to lower their asking price to around £25m-£30m.

Inter Milan are growing increasingly concerned that they will lose goalkeeper Andre Onana amid interest from Chelsea and Manchester United, and the Italian side may now turn their attention to Tottenham target David Raya as a replacement.

Tottenham are making finding a new number-one goalkeeper a priority this summer, with Hugo Lloris‘ time in North London appearing to be at an end. The Frenchman recently admitted he is ready for a new challenge (Nice-Matin).

David Raya

It is thought Brentford stopper David Raya is the top target for the Lilywhites, and personal terms have already been agreed between Spurs and the player (Fabrizio Romano).

All that remains is to arrange a transfer fee with Brentford. The Bees want £40 million for Raya but Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly reluctant to pay that much (Telegraph).

Inter Milan are interested in Spurs target David Raya

It has been suggested this hesitation could pave the way for other clubs to swoop, and now Inter Milan have joined the queue for the highly-rated 27-year-old according to The Guardian.

Apparently, Inter Milan keeper Andre Onana is being targeted by both Chelsea and Manchester United. Should Onana leave the club this summer, that could have a negative domino effect on Tottenham‘s plans to sign Raya.

Due to financial issues, Inter are likely to be “forced to sell” their star keeper this summer if an offer comes their way. Chelsea and Manchester United are both believed to have “registered an interest” in Onana.

In light of this development, Inter have already “inquired” about the situation surrounding Raya’s future, which could put a spanner in the works for Spurs.

Spurs Web Opinion

I feared this would happen and the fact we cannot just meet a player’s valuation and get a deal over the line could well cost us dearly again.

We are so close to bringing Raya to the club and we need to just get it done now before other clubs move in.

The Daily Mail have claimed that Brentford might be prepared to let Tottenham target David Raya rot on the bench next season if his valuation is not met this summer.

A couple of days ago, we covered a report from The Times which revealed that Tottenham had agreed on personal terms with Raya but the outlet stated there was still no agreement between the two clubs on a fee.

It was explained that the Lilywhites had no intention of meeting Brentford’s £40m asking price, given that the Spaniard has just 12 months left on his contract at the West London Club.

This was subsequently followed by an update from talkSPORT (June 12) that the goalkeeper was pushing Thomas Frank’s men to green-light a move to Tottenham.

However, if The Mail are to be believed, Brentford appear unlikely to budge on their asking price for the 27-year-old and are willing to play hardball with Spurs.

The report claims that with the Bees now having already signed Mark Flekken from Freiburg, they could leave Raya on the bench for the 2023-24 campaign to make their point.

This negotiating tactic would certainly be familiar to Levy as it is essentially the same one he is employing with Harry Kane.

However, while Tottenham genuinely seem prepared to allow Kane to run into the final year of his deal, Brentford appear to have given away their hand by signing Flekken.

I suspect that the Bees would be willing to accept a fee of around £30m for Raya this summer.
