Guglielmo Vicario has revealed that Hugo Lloris has taken him under his wing and helped him settle into life in the Premier League and at Tottenham.

Vicario certainly has big shoes to fill at Spurs, with Lloris undoubtedly being the best goalkeeper the club has had in the Premier League era.

Despite showing signs of decline over the last couple of years, the former Spurs captain is still a highly respected figure in N17 and will be remembered by the supporters as one of the biggest modern-day legends.

Lloris was expected to leave the club this summer after admitting back in July that he is seeking a new challenge away from the English side (Nice-Matin).

To people’s surprise, the 36-year-old remained put at Tottenham, although he appears unlikely to make an appearance for the Lilywhites again, with Fraser Foster seemingly being Ange Postecoglou’s preferred backup to Vicario.

Hugo Lloris is still lending a hand at Tottenham

The new Spurs number one has now admitted that Lloris has been of great help to him around the training ground.

Vicario told Sky Sports Football Daily: “I have to respect Hugo for his big career here at Spurs, and also with France because he achieved a lot of trophies and reached a lot of finals. So big respect for him, he’s a big guy.

“He helps me a lot during training. It’s good for me because this is my first year abroad so new culture and, a new way to play football. The Premier League is different from Italy so it’s a big pleasure for me to train with him. So many, many thank yous for what he’s doing for me.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Hugo is an absolute gentleman and one would not expect anything different from him. Even though he has now become a peripheral figure at the club, it would still be a sad moment when he eventually exits the club, which one would expect him to do in January.

Five of Tottenham’s first-team stars are now into the final year of their contracts at the club, with GiveMeSport revealing that the North London club could clear close to half a million per week from their wage bill if they all leave.

Last week, we relayed a report from The Times which claimed that apart from reinforcing a couple of areas, Tottenham’s priority in the January transfer window will be to offload unwanted players.

That report listed both Hugo Lloris and Eric Dier among the players who Spurs could look to move on when the transfer window opens.

Tottenham could let some contracts run down

However, those two are not the only ones whose contracts run out next June, with two other goalkeepers, Fraser Forster and Brandan Austin, also into the final year of their deals.

In addition, Ivan Perisic, who is currently out with an ACL injury, will also be a free agent next June.

If none of those players signs new contracts, GiveMeSport reveals that their departures would free up 450k per week from their wage bill.

Spurs Web Opinion

Among the aforementioned players, the only one I could see signing a new contract at the club is Forster. If the 35-year-old does not show major signs of decline this season, I can see him being offered a one-year extension, with Tottenham putting off signing a backup goalkeeper until 2025.

According to L’Equipe (as translated by Sport Witness), Hugo Lloris wanted to leave Tottenham Hotspur on a free this summer but the North London club had other ideas.

Lloris, who has been at Tottenham since 2012, declared at the start of the summer that he was ready to leave Spurs in search of a new challenge (Nice-Matin).

To many people’s surprise, the goalkeeper still remains in N17, with reports over recent weeks indicating that the decision-makers at the North London club were confused that he had rejected a number of offers during the summer, including a couple from Saudi Arabia (Evening Standard).

Ange Postecoglou named the 36-year-old in his Premier League squad after the closure of the transfer window, but it does not seem like he is likely to play for the club again, with the Australian opting to name Fraser Forster on the bench ahead of the former Spurs captain.

Levy made things difficult for Hugo Lloris exit

L’Equipe have now asserted that Lloris thought he would be allowed to leave Tottenham on a free transfer but Daniel Levy ‘saw things differently’ and made the move more difficult.

The report states that the Frenchman himself also turned down moves to both Lazio and Newcastle during the transfer window.

Finally, the outlet adds that the former Tottenham captain does not see any prospect of game time this season unless there is an injury crisis to the goalkeepers at Spurs.

Spurs Web Opinion

I highly doubt that Tottenham would have stood in Lloris’ way had he communicated a desire to join a certain club. It seems like the former Spurs skipper simply did not get an offer that he found particularly appealing.

I News have claimed that a young Hugo Lloris was recommended as a signing to Newcastle prior to his move to Tottenham Hotspur eleven years ago.

Lloris will undoubtedly go down as one of Spurs’ biggest legends of modern times, with the Frenchman undoubtedly being the best goalkeeper that Tottenham have had during the Premier League era.

The 36-year-old’s spell at the North London club has perhaps not ended the way he would have wanted, with the former Tottenham captain now simply making up the numbers in the club’s Premier League squad until he seals his departure.

However, Spurs fans will certainly look back fondly on the goalkeeper’s time at the club despite the former Lyon man not tasting silverware in N17.

Newcastle were told to sign a young Hugo Lloris

I News have now alleged that Lloris could have ended up at St James’ Park had things worked out a little differently.

The outlet states that the Magpies’ former chief scout, Graham Carr, recommended the goalkeeper to the Newcastle hierarchy when he was young, budding goalkeeper but the club decided against making a move for him.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is important for fans to remember that Lloris could have quite easily left Spurs before we peaked under Pochettino as he was one of the most highly-rated goalkeepers in the world when we were struggling as a team under AVB and Sherwood. Instead, the Frenchman showed tremendous loyalty by sticking around at Tottenham.

Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper, Paul Robinson, has revealed his disappointment at the way Hugo Lloris’ Spurs career appears to be coming to an end.

Having been a key figure in North London for the last decade, and holding the captain’s armband for eight years, it seems certain that Hugo Lloris will depart the club within the next year.

Lloris suffered a severe drop in form last season, culminating in the 6-1 defeat to Newcastle United in April. Injury kept the Frenchman out of action for the rest of the season, with Fraser Forster filling in between the sticks.

The arrival of Guglielmo Vicario this summer all but sealed Lloris’ fate. If Vicario’s presence alone were not enough, then the way the Italian has performed so far this season certainly has put an end to Lloris’ hopes of being Spurs’ number one ever again.

Ange Postecoglou made it fairly clear that Lloris would not have a place in the Tottenham squad and it was thought the 36-year-old would move on in the summer.

Despite interest from Lazio (L’Equipe) and Newcastle United (The Times), Lloris stayed put. He even declined the chance to rejoin his former club Nice on deadline day, as he wasn’t given an idea of a ‘clear sporting project’ (Nice-Matin).

Has Hugo Lloris been treated unfairly?

Speaking on The Debrief, Paul Robinson suggested the club should treat Lloris with more respect and handle his exit more carefully.

He said: “For me, Hugo Lloris, it looks like his time is done at Tottenham, doesn’t it? But I’m disappointed with the way it has petered to an end. He deserves, not more of a send-off, but more of a respectful ending if this is indeed to be the end for Hugo Lloris.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I agree Hugo Lloris deserves the utmost respect, but it’s not like the club hasn’t given him a chance to leave on good terms. He had a few offers this summer and turned them down, knowing full well that he would be left on the sidelines for the season if he stayed.

Fichajes have claimed that Real Betis are eyeing a move for Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the summer.

It came as a surprise when Lloris stayed at Spurs in the summer, with some reports revealing that the decision makers at Tottenham were perplexed that the Frenchman rejected several offers, including multiple ones from the Saudi Pro League (Evening Standard).

Multiple publications have claimed over the last couple of weeks (Telegraph and Football Insider) that the 36-year-old is expected to exit the North London club on a free transfer in January.

Real Betis alerted by Hugo Lloris’ availability

Fichajes have now stated that the possibility of snapping up a goalkeeper of Lloris’ experience on a free transfer appeals to Betis, who are allegedly on the lookout for a new shot-stopper.

It is explained that Manuel Pellegrini has not been satisfied with the level of Claudio Bravo, who is currently serving as the backup to Rui Silva, and wants the club to sign the former Tottenham captain.

The report explains that while Lloris is on the radar of many clubs, it is Betis who have shown ‘the greatest interest’ in the Frenchman so far.

Spurs Web Opinion

It remains to be seen if Lloris would accept a number two but realistically, the 36-year-old might not have any choice but to do so if he wants to continue at the top level.

Hugo Lloris is likely to leave Tottenham in January

The Telegraph have claimed that the experienced goalkeeper is expected to call time on his Spurs career when the transfer window reopens.

It is suggested that Lloris’ contract, which runs until next summer, is expected to be terminated so that he can leave on a free transfer in January.

Spurs Web Opinion

If Tottenham were planning on terminating Lloris’ contract and letting him leave on a free, I do not understand why they would have to wait until January to do so.

Ange Postecoglou has spoken about the decision to include Hugo Lloris and Eric Dier in Tottenham Hotspur’s 25-man Premier League squad for the 2023/24 season.

Postecoglou has stressed that despite Dier having not been named in any of his five competitive match day squads to date, he has never been fully out of the first-team picture in North London.

Lloris had been expected to quit the club after 11 years’ service during the close season having made his intentions clear to seek a challenge away from North London and did not make the trip for the pre-season tour to sort out his future.

Tottenham moved for Guglielmo Vicario during the summer, with the Italian having been signed as the club’s new main goalkeeper.

Postecoglou explains why Lloris and Dier are named in his Premier League squad

The captaincy was taken off the French World Cup winner ahead of the new campaign with Heung-min Son now wearing the armband instead following Harry Kane’s transfer to Bayern Munich.

Postecoglou had downplayed the chances of Lloris being included in the North Londoners’s top flight squad list if he was still at the club in September when he was asked last month (Football.London).

With Lloris having been included in the 25-man squad list for the Premier League this season, it sparked a U-turn from the Australian.

He explained to Football.London: “I think it was a fairly fluid situation. We weren’t sure what was going to happen with Hugo. Dier was never out of the squad.

“At the end of the window we saw the numbers we had and there was room for both of them. They’ve been training with the squad so they continue to be part of it.”

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed their squad for the 2023/24 Premier League campaign following today’s 2pm deadline for top flight clubs to confirm their playing personnel.

In order to submit the correct playing squad, clubs must create a mixture of eight home grown players and up to 17 non home grown to make up their 25-man list.

Players under the age of 21 do not need be included in our 25-player squad, and clubs can field as many under-21s as they wish throughout the campaign.

Clubs are permitted to change their squads during the January transfer window.

Alasdair Gold thinks Hugo Lloris would have been surprised by the lack of interest in his services from top clubs during the summer transfer window.

Lloris has undoubtedly been one of the best shot-stoppers in European football for the best part of the last decade and was widely respected in the game, having captained both Tottenham and France for an extended period of time.

However, the 36-year-old showed clear signs of decline last season. He called time on his international career following the World Cup in Qatar and he declared at the start of the summer that he would look to leave Spurs in search of a new challenge (Nice-Matin).

To many people’s surprise, the goalkeeper still remains at Tottenham, with reports over the last two weeks indicating that the decision-makers at the North London club were surprised that he had rejected a number of offers during the summer, including a couple from Saudi Arabia (Evening Standard).

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Lloris, with some outlets indicating recently that the year left on the Frenchman’s contract could be terminated (Football Insider).

Lloris may be surprised to still be at Tottenham

Gold has now said that the goalkeeper was as surprised as anyone else that his stock appears to have fallen so much in such a short space of time.

The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “I am surprised that he [Lloris] hasn’t gone anywhere. I am surprised there’s not a club in Europe that’s kind of thought, ‘Do you know what? He’s decent’.

“I didn’t think his stock would fall as low as it maybe has, I think that will have surprised him a little bit as obviously there were offers from the Saudi league as well, but that clearly hasn’t appealed to him.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I suspect that Lloris was eyeing a return to Ligue 1 this summer as he and his family wanted to return to France. But apart from Nice’s very late offer, it does not appear as if any other French side made a serious attempt to sign the goalkeeper during the summer.

Nice sporting director Florent Ghisolfi has claimed that a move for Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was never close to happening.

The World Cup winner revealed towards the end of his 11th season at Spurs that he wanted to leave the club as he has ‘desires for other things’ (Nice-Matin).

The 36-year-old retired from international duty with France in January, one year after signing a contract extension that would keep him at Spurs through to the end of this season.

Lloris has been at Spurs since joining in 2012 from Lyon and has captained the side since 2015, his last appearance for the North Londoners came in the humiliating 6-1 defeat to Newcastle towards the end of last season, where he was forced off at half-time at St. James’ Park with a thigh injury after conceding five times in the opening 21 minutes.

Tottenham moved in a different direction this summer with the arrival of Guglielmo Vicario as the club’s number one, with Fraser Forster continuing to act as understudy.

Lloris has found the prospect of leaving Tottenham a difficult situation, having been linked with a move to Lazio which failed to materialise (Goal) and was linked with a return to his former club Nice in the last hours of the summer transfer window.

Did Hugo Lloris reject a transfer to Nice?

The veteran claimed after the window slammed shut that he had the opportunity to return to the club where he started his career, but was not given enough time to be able to carefully consider the offer from the Ligue 1 outfit (Nice-Matin).

Lloris said: “I want to clear up the ambiguity surrounding the events of the past hours. [On Friday], an hour before the end of the window, I received a call from an agent, who brought up the possibility of joining OGC Nice.

“Playing prospects and the sporting project, the real drivers behind a player’s decision, much more so than financial conditions, weren’t clearly broached.

“My professional journey has shown how much that exchange, of sharing and collective growth, has always forged my decisions, even more so when it’s about coming back to the club that trained me.

“The supporters and the team deserve better than a split-second decision based on a phone call without expectations or a clear sporting project with one hour until the closure of the window at a time where I wasn’t expecting it.”

However, Ghisolfi has offered a different version of events by claiming that an agent attempted to get Lloris to terminate his deal at Tottenham and the story was spun when a move to Nice did not happen.

He told Nice-Matin: “It’s a story that shows a lot about the current state of football and the impact of social media.

“In the last few minutes of the transfer window, an agent tried to get him to terminate his contract at Tottenham with the Nice carrot on the end on the end of the stick. He then leaked the story of a refusal to get it. He didn’t refuse Nice because the club never concretely offered him anything.

“As I told him at the end of last season, we chose [Marcin] Bulka, and we never imagined, financially or on a football level, the idea of Hugo coming in as a number two at Nice. But he’s a kid from the region, he loves the club. It’s a project that could correspond him with the right timing. We have him in a corner of our head.”

Despite a massive overhaul of the Tottenham squad this summer, which appears to have saved the club a lot in wages, the failure to offload Hugo Lloris, Eric Dier, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could cost a reported £15.9m in wages this season.

It was a busy summer for Spurs and their new manager, Ange Postecoglou. Seven new signings were made, with the loan deals of Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski also made permanent, as expected.

There were plenty of outgoings, too. Harry Winks departed for Leicester City early in the window, Harry Kane made a high-profile switch to Bayern Munich, Sergio Reguilon joined Manchester United on loan, and both Joe Rodon and Djed Spence joined Leeds United on loan.

After the English transfer window closed, both Davinson Sanchez and Tanguy Ndombele joined Galatasaray, too. The former, on a permanent deal, the latter on a loan deal.

Spurs could have saved £15m by selling three players

While the squad was trimmed, there certainly could have been more players shipped out by Spurs. And, if the club had simply sold three of its most experienced players, there could have been a huge saving in the wage bill.

A report from Football.London claims Tottenham were spending around £108m on player wages last season, with a further £21m cost accrued by the players they sent out on loan.

With the deals completed this summer, it is believed Spurs now have their wage bill down to around £94m per year. Apparently, offloading Ndombele specifically may have saved the club roughly £10.4m, as the “second highest earner at the club.”

However, while that reduction in the wage bill is good news, it could have been better. With Spurs unable to shift Hugo Lloris, Eric Dier, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – a trio that Spurs were “keen to move on” this summer – it will cost the Lilywhites a further £15.9m this year.

Spurs Web Opinion

Obviously, it would have been ideal to get rid of a handful of other players this summer, but that was certainly one of the more constructive transfer windows of recent memory for Spurs. If we can sell a few more in January, and then do more work next summer, we will be in a terrific place.

Journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed that Hugo Lloris is ‘a bit torn’ about his future after turning down several offers to be the number two at various clubs.

After the European window closed a little over a week ago, Lloris himself admitted that he had rejected a deadline day move to his boyhood club, Nice, as the offer arrived too late in the window (Nice Matin).

The Evening Standard subsequently claimed last week that the decision-makers at Spurs were baffled that the Frenchman rejected offers from Nice, Newcastle United, Lazio and multiple Saudi clubs despite expressing his intention to leave.

The Athletic explained a couple of days ago that earlier in the summer, Spurs were happy for their former captain to stay and offer his experience to the new number one but the 36-year-old made it clear that he did not want to be an understudy at the North London club or anywhere else.

Jacobs has now revealed that Spurs are by no means pushing Lloris out of the door and are happy for him to remain at the club until January if he decides to do so.

Hugo Lloris is not sure of his next move beyond Spurs

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “If Lloris wants to stay at Spurs and not play until January, Tottenham won’t stand in his way. So, this is not Tottenham forcing Lloris out of the club.

“It’s Tottenham waiting, being patient and determining where he truly wants to go. There’s been some interest in Saudi Arabia, but Lloris hasn’t bitten. Newcastle were looking at Lloris, but they wouldn’t have been able to give him any game time either.

“So, I think that Lloris has been a bit torn because he’s starting to realise, having been ever-present and integral to the Spurs project, that wherever he goes next may not come with game time.

“Tottenham also won’t come with game time, and if he wants minutes, he may have to drop down to a level or move to a place that isn’t one of his top preferences. I think that’s why it’s been so difficult.”

Spurs Web Opinion

If Lloris had known earlier in the summer that he would not get many good offers, I suspect he would have been happy to remain at Tottenham as an understudy for one more season and leave on free next summer.

The 36-year-old was perhaps expecting a few decent offers from France but they seemingly did not arrive until very late in the window.

Guglielmo Vicario has a lot of respect for Hugo Lloris and says he has learned a lot from the Frenchman so far.

When Vicario arrived through the door at Spurs in the summer to take over the gloves from Lloris, it was widely expected that the former Tottenham captain’s eleven-year stay at the club would come to an end.

However, with the European transfer window now closed, the 36-year-old still remains at the club, with The Evening Standard reporting that those at the North London side were baffled the goalkeeper kept rejecting offers despite being informed he would not be included in the Premier League squad.

According to various outlets, Lloris is not going to be reintegrated into Postescoglou’s plans, with Spurs likely to terminate the year left on the experienced star’s contract (Football Insider).

Vicario has a lot of respect for Lloris at Tottenham

Vicario, who has made an excellent start to his Tottenham career, has spoken in glowing terms of the legendary goalkeeper, admitting that it has been a pleasure to work with the former Lyon man.

When asked about taking over from Lloris, the Italian told Sky Sports’ Michael Bridge: “First of all, big respect for Hugo [Lloris], for such a big goalkeeper. I think he is one of the stars of the Spurs, it’s a pleasure to learn from him.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Lloris is evidently respected by everyone at Spurs and would undoubtedly go down as one of the club’s biggest modern-day legends.

It is unfortunate that the goalkeeper’s time at Tottenham appears set to end in a less-than-ideal manner, with the 36-year-old not getting the chance to say a proper goodbye to the fans on the pitch last season, and now looking set to leave through the backdoor.

Spurs were open to Lloris staying as number two

The Athletic have now explained that earlier in the summer, Spurs were happy for Lloris to stay and offer his experience to the new number one but the 36-year-old made it clear that he did not want to be an understudy at the North London club or anywhere else.

That is why the goalkeeper is said to have knocked back several enquiries, including ones from Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan.

The publication also explains that Tottenham were willing to pay off Lloris’ contract on deadline day to facilitate a free transfer to Nice but the move never came close to being completed.

Spurs Web Opinion

If Tottenham had been willing to pay off Lloris’ contract in the summer, there is no reason for them not to do so now and allow the former Spurs captain to sort out his own future as a free agent.

According to ll Messaggero (as relayed by Corriere Giallorosso), AS Roma turned down the chance to sign Hugo Lloris from Tottenham this summer.

Despite the European transfer window closing, Lloris remains at Spurs, with The Evening Standard revealing a couple of days ago that the Frenchman had turned down multiple offers from Saudi Arabia, as well as approaches from Nice, Newcastle United and Lazio.

The outlet added that Tottenham have been baffled by the 36-year-old’s behaviour, particularly since it was made clear to him that he would not be named in the club’s Premier League squad.

A few days before the transfer window closed, it was suggested by TuttoMercatoWeb that Jose Mourinho was considering reuniting with Lloris in Rome.

Roma and Mourinho were offered Hugo Lloris

ll Messaggero have now shed more light on the situation, stating that both Lloris and Kasper Schmeichel were offered to Roma towards the end of the transfer window.

However, it is explained that both Mourinho and goalkeeping coach Nuno Santos trusted their current number one Rui Patricio.

That factor combined with the Giallorossi’s issues in complying with FFP regulations meant that it was a ‘dry no’ to Lloris and the Dane.

Spurs Web Opinion

It seems like Lloris only had options to be an understudy at various top clubs rather than any offer to be a number one. I doubt he is going to get any such offers in January as well, which is why he might have to reconsider his stance on moving to Saudi Arabia.

After failing to secure a move away from the club during the main transfer window, it seems Hugo Lloris could now swap Tottenham Hotspur for Saudi Arabia.

Hugo Lloris had been a key player for Tottenham for over a decade, and club captain for eight years, but that time is at an end now.

Poor form and injury troubles saw Lloris replaced by Fraser Forster in the backend of last season. Then, this summer, the arrival of Guglielmo Vicario sealed Lloris’ fate.

It was well-documented that Spurs were keen to sell Lloris this summer as there was no place in Ange Postecoglous squad for the 36-year-old.

However, moves to Lazio (L’Equipe) and Newcastle United (The Times) fell through due to the Frenchman’s reluctance to be a second-choice goalkeeper.

An offer from his former club Nice came late on deadline day, but Lloris also rejected this approach. The player himself said he turned this proposal down as he wasn’t given an idea of a ‘clear sporting project’ (Nice-Matin).

Is Lloris heading to Saudi Arabia?

Now, Lloris could be the latest player to move to Saudi Arabia. The transfer window there is open until September 7, allowing Premier League clubs to sell players there despite the English window being closed.

According to sources at Football Insider, Lloris is now “frozen out” at Tottenham and could find his next club in Saudi Arabia, or Turkey. The transfer window for the latter remains open until September 15.

It is believed Lloris “could now see options open” in either of those nations.

Tottenham just sent Tanguy Ndombele on loan to Galatasaray in Turkey, while Davinson Sanchez made the same move on a permanent deal.

Spurs Web Opinion

Hugo Lloris really has to leave the club in the next week or so, otherwise, he will rot in the reserves for months, and he deserves better than that. A move to Turkey would not be bad at all. Maybe he could even join Galatasaray and play alongside Davinson Sanchez.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has indicated that Tottenham are now willing to let Hugo Lloris leave on a free transfer.

Even though Ange Postecoglou was always quite clear that Lloris would not be named in Spurs’ 25-man Premier League squad (Football.London), the goalkeeper still remains in N17.

It emerged that the former Tottenham captain turned down the chance to move to Lazio in the final week of the transfer window as he did not want to be a number two at the Serie A side (Fabrice Hawkins).

The 36-year-old also admitted that he passed up on deadline day move to his hometown club, Nice, with the goalkeeper admitting that there was simply not enough time to get a clear understanding of the club’s project and his prospects of game time (Nice-Matin).

Spurs do not want a fee for Hugo Lloris anymore

Gold has now asserted that Tottenham are not asking for a transfer fee from the sides interested in Lloris. The journalist adds, however, that the goalkeeper is currently rejecting ‘offer after offer’ from various clubs.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is clear that it is due to issues at Lloris’ end that a transfer did not go through during the summer transfer window, with Spurs seemingly willing to cooperate with the experienced star.

The 36-year-old has evidently not found a move that would suit him and his family. With most clubs now having a number one in place for the season, it remains to be seen where the Frenchman can move to.

Lloris admitted over the weekend that he turned down a deadline day offer to return to his boyhood club Nice (Nice-Matin).

The former Tottenham captain explained that there was simply not enough time for him to have a discussion with the Ligue 1 club regarding their project and his prospects of game time.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold revealed on Sunday that even though Spurs are willing to let the goalkeeper leave without any transfer fee, he keeps rejecting offer after offer.

Tottenham baffled at Hugo Lloris’ conduct

The Evening Standard have now claimed that Lloris turned down more than one lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia as well as interest from both Lazio and Newcastle United.

It is explained that the 36-year-old’s reluctance to accept any offer despite being informed that he will not be part of the club’s Premier League squad has left decision-makers at Spurs ‘surprised and unsure’ of his intentions.

The publication adds that Lloris is now expected to remain at Tottenham at least until the January transfer window.

Spurs Web Opinion

Lloris’ behaviour has been quite bizarre. Perhaps, the goalkeeper was expecting some better offers (potentially from France), which just did not materialise.

Given that the 36-year-old only has a couple of years left in the game, I am surprised that he has decided to spend the next six months on the sidelines at Tottenham.

Despite an offer from his former club Nice on transfer deadline day, Hugo Lloris remains a Tottenham Hotspur player. Now, the Frenchman has explained exactly why he did not take up the opportunity to return to his home country.

Hugo Lloris is now into his twelfth year with Tottenham, but many suspected the 36-year-old would leave the club this summer.

A poor showing from the experienced keeper during the 2022/23 campaign ended in a whimper, as Lloris was injured for the final six games and replaced by Fraser Forster. It seemed Lloris would never wear a Spurs shirt again.

Lloris’ fate appeared to be settled when Guglielmo Vicario arrived at the club and took over as first-choice goalkeeper. Later, Lloris was stripped of his captaincy, with Heung-min Son becoming the new skipper at Spurs.

The veteran keeper was subsequently linked with moves to Lazio (L’Equipe) and Newcastle United (The Times), but it is thought he turned down these transfers as he didn’t want to be a back-up goalkeeper.

Why did Lloris turn down Nice on deadline day?

Just before the transfer window shut, Lloris had another offer on the table, with Nice making a late approach. Now, the player himself has told Nice-Matin why he opted against rejoining the club where he began his career.

He said: “I want to clear up the ambiguity surrounding the events of the past hours.

Fair play, this does sound like a valid reason not to accept the offer, but I just don’t know what Lloris is expecting to do now. He is not going to play for Spurs this season, and if he doesn’t sort something out soon, he will end up wasting one of the final years of his career.
