]]>Eric Dier had been a regular starter under pretty much every Spurs manager during his near-ten-year stint with the club. Mauricio Pochettino certainly liked him, Jose Mourinho put a lot of faith in Dier in defence, and he was a mainstay in Antonio Conte’s line up.
However, since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou, Dier has yet to feature for the Lilywhites. In fact, the 29-year-old has only been an unused substitute three times from a possible nine games this season (Transfermarkt).
Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are clearly the preferred centre-back pairing for Postecoglou, and the performances and results this year indicate that is the right move.
Now, with his current contract set to expire next summer, it seems highly likely Dier will leave Tottenham in the very near future.
Whether that departure occurs at the end of the season, or in January, remains to be seen. The latest report from Italy, however, suggests the England international could be on his way to AS Roma to work with Mourinho once more.
Il Romanista claim Dier is one of the options for the Italian side come January, and it is thought he would cost considerably less than Jerome Boateng.
However, while CalcioMercato reveal Dier is the favoured option for Mourinho, the fact that Sporting Lisbon are also keen could scupper the deal. The Portuguese side are said to be “willing to shell out a few million” to bring Dier back to the club.
With Roma chief Tiago Pinto wanting to keep costs low, any bidding war could deter the Serie A side from pushing ahead with their interest in Dier.
Spurs Web Opinion
It seems highly likely Dier will move on in January, and that’s something that would really benefit everyone. He needs to play regularly if he has any hope of making it to Euro 2024, and we could raise some funds towards a replacement if we sell him before his contract is up.

]]>Dier was a firm favourite under Mourinho during the Special One’s time in North London. In fact, he had been a regular under every Spurs manager he ever played for until recently.
Ange Postecoglou arrived in N17 with a new brand of football that requires recovery speed from the two centre-backs, which is not something Dier is naturally blessed with.
As such, Micky Van de Ven was signed to partner Cristian Romero and the two have forged an inspired relationship in the heart of the Tottenham defence so far this season.
Dier has yet to play a single Premier League minute for Tottenham this season, and looks to have fallen way down the pecking order at the North London club.
However, it appears Mourinho may offer the centre-back an exit route in January.
Spurs Web Opinion:
It would be best for all parties if Dier found a move in January, as Postecoglou would be able to sign a new centre-back more in line with his project. Dier will surely also want to get some regular football under his belt and attempt to make a return to the England squad too.

]]>The post Journalist claims Serie A club would be ‘all over’ Spurs man in January if he is available appeared first on Spurs Web - Tottenham Hotspur Football News.
]]>After being a fixture in the Tottenham starting eleven since his move from Southampton three years ago, Hojbjerg has had to be content with a bit-part role under Ange Postecoglou so far this season.
While the Dane is yet to start a Premier League this season, he has come on as a substitute in seven league matches so far.
The 28-year-old is likely in line for his first start of the season in the clash against Fulham after the international break, with Yves Bissouma suspended for the game after being sent off against Luton Town.
Meanwhile, there continues to be plenty of speculation regarding Hojbejrg’s future, with the likes of Juventus (CalcioMercato), Atletico Madrid (Mundo Deportivo), and Roma (IlRomanista) credited with him over recent weeks.
Barclay believes that Hojbjerg is likely to seek an exit route from Spurs in January and backed Jose Mourinho to try and reunite with the player at the Stadio Olimpico.
The journalist said on the Tottenham Way Podcast: “Just on [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg, maybe the most interesting of that crop [of substitutes] in terms of what their future holds.
“I mean he has changed agent recently which is normally a sign of someone who’s looking for a move, it’s not the first time that’s happened.
“I’m not saying it’s definitely going to happen but that would be my initial sort of suspension when something like that happens. He is a Danish international, an established player who could play regularly for a lot of probably equal teams, just different styles of play.
“He was a key man for [Antonio] Conte and [Jose] Mourinho and also a pragmatic manager somewhere else in another division, someone like Mourinho at Roma would probably be all over him if he became available.
“We know how close he came to leaving. I still think that’s probably what happens leading into the January transfer window, particularly with the Euros on the horizon.”
Spurs Web Opinion
There is no doubt that Hojbjerg will ask to leave in January and I do not expect Spurs to stand in his way, particularly given that he will only have 18 months left on his deal.
It will be interesting to see who Tottenham target as a replacement for the 28-year-old, with Conor Gallagher looking like he might be off the table.

]]>Scott Munn officially began his work as Spurs’ chief football officer last week, with one of his top priorities said to be to find a new director of football to replace Fabio Paratici (The Athletic).
It was confirmed a couple of days ago that Spurs chief scout Leonardo Gabbanini, who played a key role in the club’s summer recruitment after Paratici’s departure, had left the club, with the decision thought to be linked to the Lilywhites’ search for a new sporting director (Football.London).
ASRomaLive have claimed that ‘alarm bells are now ringing’ at the Giallorossi at the news of Gabbanini’s exit from Spurs.
The Serie A club are allegedly worried the Premier League side have shifted their focus to Pinto, whose contract at the Stadio Olimpico runs until the end of this season.
The publication adds that if Tottenham were to swoop for the Portuguese director, it would ‘completely change the framework’ at Roma, which is why the Italian club are paying close attention to the happenings in N17.
Spurs Web Opinion
Scott Munn and Daniel Levy would have compiled a list of potential candidates a while ago and one would expect Pinto to be very much on the list as he is undoubtedly one of the most respected directors in the game.

]]>With Ange Postecoglou seemingly ruling out the prospect of Lloris staying in N17 as an understudy to Guglielmo Vicario (Football.London), the former Tottenham captain is searching for a new club before Friday evening’s transfer deadline.
The Frenchman’s proposed move to Lazio collapsed last week, with reports indicating that the 36-year-old did not want to be the number two for Maurizio Sarri’s side (Fabrice Hawkins).
TMW have now claimed that Lloris could still end up at the Stadio Olimpico, with Lazio’s local rivals, Roma, said to be eyeing a move for the experienced goalkeeper.
The report states that over the last few days, Mourinho has thought about bringing the Spurs star to the Italian capital to work alongside Rui Patricio.
However, it is claimed that the Roma hierarchy are yet to be fully convinced by the idea, with the Giallorossi said to be currently focused on getting a deal for Romelu Lukaku over the line.
Spurs Web Opinion
Patricio is now 35 years of age and so Lloris might perhaps fancy his chances of competition with the Portuguese goalkeeper more than he did against Ivan Provedel, who is going to be Lazio’s undisputed number one. So, this rumour might actually have some legs.

]]>The report states that Nemanja Matic is edging closer to an exit from Roma and the Italian club are seeking reinforcements in the middle of the park, with Ndombele being one of the players on their radar.
It is said that the midfielder, who spent last season on loan at Napoli, is considered surplus to requirements at Spurs, with some intermediaries said to have put forward his name to the Giallorossi.
The outlet points out that Jose Mourinho has already worked with the Frenchman at Spurs and suggests that the North London club might be willing to loan the player out with an option to buy.
In addition, it is asserted that Galatasaray have temporarily put their negotiations with Tottenham for Ndombele on hold, which has potentially opened the door for Roma to swoop for the former Lyon man.
However, Calciomercato.it add that the Spurs star is not the only option the Serie A club are eyeing, with PSG’s Renato Sanches and Leandro Paredes also on their shortlist.
Spurs Web Opinion
I have been surprised by the lack of interest from Serie A clubs in Ndombele this summer as the 26-year-old was by no means terrible for Napoli last season.
However, I have no doubt that Tottenham would be keen to sell the midfielder permanently this summer rather than loaning him out again.

]]>It’s safe to say it was a pretty big deal when Jose Mourinho took over at Tottenham back in November 2019, with many fans hoping the esteemed coach could bring glory to the North London club.
Indeed, Mourinho has won trophies at every club he has managed, both before and after Spurs. Sadly, he failed to do so at Tottenham and he was sacked in April of 2021.
The Portuguese coach very nearly did win silverware with the Lilywhites, however, having guided the club to the League Cup final in 2021. He was dismissed just days before the Carabao Cup final, a game Spurs ultimately lost to Manchester City under Ryan Mason‘s care.
In an interview with Corriere dello Sport, Mourinho has praised the connection he shares with the fans of his current club, AS Roma. But, the 60-year-old explained why he didn’t feel the same at Tottenham.
He said: “[The Roma fans] understood what the other fans of my teams understood. Only at Tottenham did I not feel the same sensations. There was no empathy, but it was the COVID period, the stadium was empty. I failed to create a rapport.”
This is not the first time Mourinho has spoken negatively about his relationship with the Spurs fans, having previously said he does not retain a ‘deep feeling’ for Tottenham and the supporters (Metro).
Spurs Web Opinion
To be honest, I sometimes forget Jose Mourinho even managed us. I think the COVID period really tarnished his whole tenure, and fans had little chance to connect with the club at that time.

]]>Earlier in the summer, plenty of Italian outlets reported that Spurs had their eye on Ibanez, with Gazzetta dello Sport (15/06/23 via Sport Witness) even claiming that Roma sporting director Tiago Pinto had travelled to London to meet with Tottenham officials regarding the centre-back.
However, the speculation linking the Brazilian with a move to Tottenham subsequently went quiet for a few weeks until it was revived again by Roma Giallorossa on July 25.
The outlet claimed that Spurs were ‘back in the running’ to sign the Serie A defender, who Roma were keen to cash in on, owing to their need to raise some funds in order to comply with FFP rules.
The outlet adds that the Giallorossi initially wanted €30m (£25.7m) for the centre-back, which Tottenham were not willing to pay, but they would now be willing to accept just €25m (£21.4m) for the player.
However, it’s not only Ibanez who appears to have moved beyond the grasp of Tottenham, with Fabrizio Romano also giving his ‘here we go’ to Franck Kessie’s move to Al Ahli too.
Kessie was reportedly a target for the Lilywhites, with Mundo Deportivo even claiming last week that Tottenham had ‘burst into the bidding’ for the Barcelona midfielder.

]]>Adding a new centre-back or two to the Tottenham squad appears to be essential this summer after the defensive issues the side suffered last season. Indeed, Ange Postecoglou has already told the club’s board he needs to bolster his defence during the current transfer window (90 Min).
Spurs have been heavily linked with Bundesliga duo Edmond Tapsoba and Micky van de Ven, who are both thought to be the perfect fit for Tottenham (Football.London).
Aside from those two names, Spurs are also thought to hold an interest in Roma’s Roger Ibanez, with a report from Gazzetta dello Sport from 15th June (via Sport Witness) claiming a meeting had been held regarding the Brazilian.
This weekend, reports from Italy have resurfaced, with the suggestion that Spurs are back in the race for Ibanez after seeing their previous offer rejected (Roma Giallorossa).
Now, the latest from Roma Giallorossa claims the Lilywhites could be very close to striking an agreement for Ibanez, if they just offer €3m (£2.58m) more.
Roma chief Tiago Pinto is said to be due in London “in the next few days” for discussions with a number of clubs. Fulham are mentioned as a possible destination for Ibanez, but it is thought “above all” that Tottenham are the club who could secure his signing.
The report suggests that Spurs can acquire Ibanez if they simply add €3m worth of bonuses to their original offer of €22m (£18.9m) which was rejected earlier this month.
Spurs Web Opinion
This is a no-brainer really. Ibanez is a quality player and we could sign him for just over £20m if this report is true, which should be well within our budget while leaving room to manoeuvre to sign a second centre-half.

However, the speculation linking the Brazilian with a move to Spurs had subsequently gone quiet.
Roma Giallorossa have stated that Spurs are now ‘back in the running’ to sign the Serie A defender.
The publication explains that one of the reasons is that Davinson Sanchez is now on the verge of sealing a move away from N17, with the Lilywhites now looking for reinforcements in central defence.
It is alleged that Roma need to raise some funds through player sales in order to comply with FFP rules, which is why the Italian side are now ready to offload Ibanez.

There is no indication from any reliable sources that Ibanez is one of the centre-backs near the top of Tottenham’s wishlist.

Romagiallorossa.it claimed two weeks ago that Roma sporting director Tiago Pinto had met with the Tottenham hierarchy to speak about the Brazilian.
It was even suggested by Leggo (26/06/23 as relayed by Corriere Giallorosso) earlier this week that there is the possibility of Spurs using Ben Davies in a swap deal to sign the Roma star.
However, FirenzeViola.it have now suggested that Fulham are set to enter the race for Ibanez’s signature.
It is explained that the Cottager’s top target was Igor Julio but having failed with an approach for the Fiorentina star, they are now ready to turn their attention to the Giallorossi centre-back.
However, the publication adds that Ibanez has ‘many options’ from several different countries to choose from, with some clubs already alleged to have taken ‘decisive steps’ in their pursuit of the defender.
Spurs Web Opinion
All of the speculation linking Ibanez with a move to Tottenham has come from Italian outlets, which suggests that the information is coming from sources at Roma or the player’s entourage.
There has been no indication from journalists with sources high up at Spurs that the Brazilian is one of the North London club’s top centre-back targets.

]]>A few days ago, we relayed a report from the print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (15/06/23 via Sport Witness) which revealed that Pinto was in London and was expected to try and agree on Ibanez’s sale.
The report explained that amidst interest from Spurs in the centre-back, the Giallorossi want to agree on a quick sale due to their need to raise funds before the end of the month to balance their books.
Romagiallorossa have now also confirmed that Pinto has indeed been in the English capital over the last few days, with the publication explaining that he has been meeting with West Ham to discuss the purchase of Gianluca Scamacca.
The Portuguese director is now said to be ready to start ‘new contacts’ with Tottenham regarding Ibanez to evaluate the possibility of a deal.
The report asserts that Roma club value the Brazilian at around €30m-€35m (£25.6m-£29.8m), which Spurs are ‘unlikely’ to pay.
However, Romagiallorossa add that Pinto ‘will try’ to achieve a sale as Jose Mourinho’s men need to raise €30m (£25.6m) before the end of June in order to remain within the Financial Fair Play guidelines.
Spurs Web Opinion
Tottenham would perhaps look to take advantage of Roma’s desperation to try and get a favourable deal for Ibanez. I can see Levy potentially making a £15m-£20m offer to test the Giallorossi’s resolve.
While the 24-year-old might not be the answer to our defensive woes, his versatility means that he could be more than a useful squad player, particularly with Sanchez and Tanganga seemingly on their way out.

The publication adds that Roma sporting director Tiago Pinto is now in London and is ‘trying to understand how real’ Tottenham’s interest in the player is.
Meanwhile, Corriere have also confirmed that Pinto is in London to work on Ibanez’s sale, with the outlet stating that the Portuguese director is trying to convert the interest of the likes of Spurs into concrete offers.

This information has now been backed up by Roma Giallorossa, who claim that the Italian club have to raise around €30m (£25.7m) by the end of this month.
The report adds that Spurs and West Ham are both ‘monitoring’ Ibanez but the Lilywhites club are ‘above all’ in the race for the player.

Roma Giallorossa also assert that new Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou is an ‘admirer’ of Ibanez.

This sort of deal is right up Levy’s alley as the Spurs chairman might relish the prospect of trying to sign Ibanez on a discount, given that Roma are now desperate for a cash injection.

Ndicka is the subject of two contractual offers from Serie A clubs with AC Milan having offered a five-year contract while Jose Mourinho‘s Roma have also tabled a five-year deal but with better financial terms which currently makes them the frontrunner.
The 23-year-old has featured for France’s youth squads from the Under-16’s to the Under-21’s but is yet to be capped by the French senior squad.
He was part of the Frankfurt side that faced off with Tottenham in the Champions League last year with both sides progressing out of Group D to the knockout rounds.
Ndicka has spent five seasons with the German club and has made 163 appearances in all competitions for them (transfermarkt), however, finds himself out of contract at the end of the month which is making him the subject of plenty of interest from potential suitors.

Ndicka is a promising talent and one who Tottenham rightly have on their radar, however, it remains to be seen whether Daniel Levy is prepared to match or better the salary offered by Roma.
With Ange Postecoglou having only just joined and a sporting director still to be appointed, Tottenham are playing catch-up in relation to their transfer activity.

This was subsequently followed by an update from Mais Futebol a couple of days later, which claimed that Tottenham were battling West Ham for Pinto’s services, and suggested that the Hammers are leading the race for his signature.
If Leggo’s latest update is to be believed, Pinto is now ‘close to saying goodbye’ to Roma and is about to be replaced by Frederic Massara, who recently parted ways with AC Milan, as early as next week.

Strangely, it does not appear as if Tottenham are in a particular hurry to get a new sporting director in place.
