Gary Lineker has claimed that Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are the best central defensive pairing in the Premier League at the moment.

Tottenham had the leakiest defence of any of the top 14 sides in the Premier League last season, conceding a whopping 63 goals over the course of the campaign.

However, so far this season, the Lilywhites have been one of the most solid defensive units across the division, having let in just nine goals in their first 10 league games.

This is despite the fact that Spurs now commit a lot more bodies forward and play a very high defensive line under Ange Postecoglou.

Van de Ven has received plenty of praise following the impressive start to his Premier League career, with some even naming the Dutchman as the best signing of the summer transfer window (The Times).

Are Van de Ven and Romero the best duo in the PL?

Lineker admitted that he has been mightily impressed by the partnership that Romero and Van de Ven have forged this season.

The former Spurs striker said on Rest is Football podcast: “And at the back, Van de Ven and Romero. Is there a better defensive partnership in the Premier League at the moment? You perhaps look at Manchester City but they tend to move around their partnerships so much.”

Micah Richards admitted that he still has doubts about Romero, owing to the Argentine’s tendency to get carried away, but he too heaped praise on Van de Ven.

The former Man City star responded: “The only I would say about Spurs is that Romero, he tends to get a little bit excited from time to time. Exactly (he could get himself a red card.)

“He lets the emotion get the better of him sometimes. But as for a paring right now, this season, they have been exceptional. Van de Ven to come in and just be so cool and calm and collected, positioning.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Romero and Van de Ven have both been exceptional but we might be in serious trouble if either of them picks up an injury, which is why top-quality reinforcements in central defence should be Tottenham’s number one priority in January.

Emerson Royal has revealed that Cristian Romero mocks him and Richarlison every day about Argentina’s Copa America and World Cup wins.

Romero has written his name into Argentine football folklore, helping guide the Albiceleste to their first Copa America win in 18 years back in 2021 and their first World Cup title in 36 years in Qatar last year.

Given the rivalry that exists between Argentina and Brazil, the Tottenham man understandably has bragging rights over his fellow South American teammates.

Richarlison played all 90 minutes in the Copa America final at the Marcana back in 2021 while Emerson came on as a substitute on 76 minutes for Renan Lodi.

Ange de Maria’s 22nd-minute striker proved the difference between the two sides on the night, and Emerson has revealed that his Tottenham teammate does not miss an opportunity to remind him of the victory.

Romero has the bragging rights over Brazil duo

When asked if Romero provokes him and Richarlison, the right-back told ESportes (as relayed by TBR Football): “[Laughs] Every day! He has a tattoo on his calf, of the World Cup and the Copa América, in which I played in the final. So every day he comes by and plays, asking to put cream on his tattoo.”

It was well documented that Romero and Richarlison had a bit of bad blood between them ahead of the Brazilian’s move to Spurs, but the pair quickly put that behind them when the forward made the switch from Everton last year (Daily Mail).

Spurs Web Opinion

It is quite clear that the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking contingent at Tottenham are a tight group but I have no doubt that Romero will not go easy on the likes of Emerson and Royal if he comes up against them in an international fixture again in the future.

Earlier in the year, I made a case for Cuti Romero to be named captain. Admittedly, it was more a thought-provoking piece rather than a genuine call to arms.

The choice was clear, obvious and only needed to be announced. Son would be captain and that would be that.

Yet there is a reason that Ange Postecoglou is the Tottenham manager and I am just a bloke sitting behind a laptop (despite leading Vauxhall Motors to multiple Champions League on Football Manager 2013).

When Son was duly announced as captain, it was part of a leadership triumvirate. This is a relatively new concept and not something that has been commonly seen in football despite people being anointed vice-captain or being part of a ‘players’ representative group’.

In this system, Son would be the new sheriff in town, ably by his deputies, Messrs Maddison and Romero. In theory, it made sense (despite some chuckles from opposition fans), but time has proved that it has been a masterstroke from Postecoglou.

LONDON, ENGLAND – OCTOBER 23: Son Heung-Min of Tottenham Hotspur celebrates their first goal during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham FC at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on October 23, 2023 in London, United Kingdom. By having three leaders, Anger realised, you can combine a range of characteristics to create one ‘super captain’ and also give all players a ‘link’ to a leader, be that be by position, age or nationality.

However, for such a combination to work effectively, the constituent parts have to work both individually and as a collective. So let’s look at what each brings to the role.

In all honesty, the South Korean was the obvious choice for the role of captain. He is the elder statesman of the starting eleven, and a player whose open devotion to a club is rare in this day and age.

In the depths of the darkness under Nuno, while Harry Kane was trying to wangle a move to Manchester City, Son came out and signed a new contract. To do so at such a time spoke volumes – he is Mr Tottenham.

However, his appointment challenges the traditional view, bandied about by a collaboration of pundits and former pros – that there are two types of captain.

Either you fall into the category of badge-thumping, loud shouting, heart-on-the-sleeve leader, or there is the lead-by-example player – an individual that lets his feet to the talking and inspires others thus.

Although Son does lead by example, that is not what makes him the leader he is. In all honesty, he is a modern man. Yes, he usually does perform, but when he is not, he is openly vulnerable and takes and accepts criticism.

Previously, I thought this would be a reason to not give him the captaincy – as it might be extra responsibility that he did not need. I was wrong and am a victim of my antiquated thinking.

Imagine the culture in that dressing room now. If you make a mistake, or are suffering with form, you have a captain, who will be there for you and seems as though he will emotionally connect with people – rather than just offering the same tired platitudes about ‘you’ll turn it around’ or ‘better luck next time’.

This is not to criticise others, it is to shine a light on the fact that, in a world of alpha males and hyper-competitiveness, you have a man who is capable of bucking the trend and succeeding.

Some may, lazily in my opinion, attribute this to his ‘culture’ or ‘heritage’. This does Sonny a disservice; the truth of the matter is that he is just a beautiful human being – I hate the phrase ‘one of the good guys in football’ but here it is apt.

From the moment he walked through the door, Son has been a bundle of positive energy. From his elaborate collection of handshakes with the likes of Dele and Kyle Walker, to his warm welcome of new, younger players such as Pape Mate Sarr.

Son’s personality also seems to dovetail nicely with that of Postecoglou. Some like to lean into the narrative that ‘Big Ange’ is a warm and avuncular character, however, he has made it clear – in various interviews – that he is somewhat detached from the players.

They love him, that is true, but that is because he is direct and unequivocal in his communication and his expectations and is not driven by his own self-ego. It does not sound like much – but doesn’t everyone wish their respective bosses behaved in such a fashion? Anyway, I digress.

In true Sonny fashion, he is more than happy to be part of a ‘leadership team’. Many would see it as a slight, or would feel that their ego was somewhat bruised at having to ‘share’. Sonny however has embraced the idea of a ‘team’ and made both Maddison and Romero feel just as important.

The fact that he was never part of the previous ‘leadership committee’ seems bizarre and wondering why may take one into more uncomfortable avenues of thought.

At the time, the selection of Maddison as vice-captain would have to be regarded as a calculated risk. Now, a quarter of a season in and playing like he has been at The Lane for years, it seems an obvious choice, but at the time it seemed like even more pressure on his shoulders.

However, pressure, it seems, is something that Maddison thrives upon. This is where he demonstrates his true leadership.

When Spurs are in the proverbial ‘pickle’, he has the desire, combined the technical excellence, to be that talismanic figure and drive the team on. He wants to be ‘The Man’. It reminds me, to some extent, of Gareth Bale. When the chips were down and all hope was lost, he would come to life.

Do not be surprised to see multiple Maddison-inspired last-minute reprieves in the coming seasons.

He is also symbolic of the new era at Spurs and represents hope, change and excitement at what might come to pass. A player not tarnished by previous disappointments or associated with past regimes.

He has that intangible trait of being charming and has already developed a strong relationship with both the squad and the fan base.

At the team’s nadir last season, I had never felt so detached from the club I love. It is incredible that having orators such as Ange and Maddison, who are so excited to be at the club can serve to reforge links that many thought might take years to repair.

Cristian Romero is turning into a Tottenham leader

So why is Romero a good choice? When I wrote my aforementioned article, I did not truly believe it myself (Spurs Web) but the arguments were logical at the very least.

In his role, he has stepped up as the main man in defence. He is their leader and acts as such. His plethora of fouls and yellow cards he acquired at will have all but evaporated.

For now, such claims about his commitment to the club seem to have dissipated. I am showing my age here, but he is still a boy – but boys quickly grow up when responsibility is laid on their shoulders.

There is a final angle that needs to be observed when looking at the leadership group as a whole – there is the bigger picture. Few places are more cosmopolitan in places of work than a Premier League dressing room.

In the current first-team Tottenham squad, there are players from sixteen different countries and three different continents (The Premier League).

Despite the myriad nations represented, the previous leadership group had a distinctly Western European feel to it. Kane, Dier, Hojbjerg and club captain Hugo Lloris compromised the group and purportedly the next inductee was to be Oliver Skipp.

Consider all the players in that dressing room who previously may not have felt represented by this selection. This is not a dig at those players, but an observation around diversity and inclusivity – we are constantly given the message ‘See it to be it’.

This limited selection could only serve to lead to a fragmented dressing room and the building up of cliques and factions. Now, the squad seems, like the peak Pochettino days, to be a united and integrated family.

Like almost every article relating to Tottenham at the moment, there needs to be a nod to the greater challenges and adversities that will undoubtedly lie ahead. However, you get the impression that the current guidance and togetherness will hold them in good stead.

There appears to be a bit of bromance brewing between Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, both of whom had high words of praise for the other following Tottenham’s win over Crystal Palace.

Romero and Van de Ven have swiftly forged a formidable partnership, with the duo complimenting each other quite well, given the Argentine’s aggression and physicality, and the Dutchman’s ability to sweep in behind with his electric pace.

Despite playing a high defensive line, Tottenham have conceded just nine goals in 10 Premier League matches so far, which is a testament to the pair’s quality.

It is not just defensively that they have made an impact but also with the ball, with Ange Postecoglou’s system reliant on the centre-backs to play out from the back.

In fact, according to Tottenham’s website, Romero created a record by completing the most passes by any Spurs player in a single game by making 141 passes at Selhurst Park.

Romero and Van de Ven are building a partnership

Van de Ven himself made 96 passes in the 2-1 win over Palace, with a whopping pass completion rate of 99 per cent.

The 22-year-old told Sky Sports (via BBC Sport) about his centre-back partner: “He is an amazing player. You can see that on the pitch. We feel each other on and off the pitch and it shows.”

When the former Wolfsburg man took to Instagram after the win on Friday, Romero commented: “Top player” along with a fire and a clap emoji.

Spurs Web Opinion

While it is obvious that the skill sets of Romero and Van de Ven complement each other quite well, it also appears as if the pair get along well off the pitch, which can only be a good thing for the burgeoning partnership.

Tottenham have revealed on their official website that Cristian Romero set a new record against Crystal Palace by completing the most number of passes by a Spurs player in a single match.

A lot has been said and written about how solid Romero has been defensively this season, with the Argentine being the leader of a defensive unit that has conceded just nine goals in ten Premier League matches so far.

However, another area in which the 25-year-old has excelled is in his decision-making in possession of the ball, with Ange Posteocoglou’s system reliant on the centre-backs to play out from the back.

Romero breaks Tottenham club passing record

Romero set a new club record by completing a whopping 141 passes in Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Selhurst Park – the most by any Spurs player in a game since such a statistic was first recorded in the 2003-04 season.

The former Atalanta man boasted of a pass completion rate of 93 per cent, which shows just how clinical he was with his passing.

Meanwhile, his centre-back partner Micky van de Ven completed 96 passes on Friday with a staggering pass completion rate of 99 per cent.

In stark contrast, the whole of the Palace team only completed 137 passes between them during the game.

Spurs Web Opinion

Romero’s ability to make inch-perfect, line-breaking passes along the ground is quite under-rated, with the centre-back getting the timing of his passes into the forwards’ feet right more often than not.

Cristian Romero says he does not want to be just another player who played for Tottenham Hotspur, but a player who makes history with the club by winning the highest honours.

Romero has already written his name into the history books by being a key part of the Argentina side which lifted the World Cup after 36 years.

The centre-back now has a chance to do something special at club level, with the Lilywhites unexpectedly sitting at the top of the Premier League table after ten matches.

That has led to conversations about whether Spurs can challenge the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal for the title this season, but that suggestion was played down by Son Heung-min, who insisted after Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace that the players are taking things one game at a time (Tribal Football).

That is a sentiment which has now been echoed by Romero, who remarked that it is too early to be talking about the title.

However, the Tottenham vice-captain stated that everyone at the North London club from top to bottom is striving to create an environment in which the side can compete for major honours consistently.

Cristian Romero wants to make history at Spurs

When asked what Spurs need to win the title, Romero told Sky Sports: “I see it this way. That obviously to win it doesn’t only depend on the coaching staff and 26-30 players in the squad.

“It doesn’t only depend on this. It depends on a lot of aspects that are around to build an institution which looks to win things like this.

“Because in the end, in the future a lot of players will have played here and to achieve something would be huge. If you don’t, you can be just another player who played for the club and I wouldn’t like that.

“For that, I always say Ange is an ideal coach for the club. The chairman is making big changes, the squad is good, we’re working for that. The Premier League is very tough, a lot of games left.

“It would be immature to talk of winning something now. Each match for us is a final and that is how we’re facing it.”

Spurs Web Opinion

One can understand why the players are not keen to entertain any talks of a title tilt publicly, given that we are just over a quarter of the way into the season.

However, they would not be human if they were not dreaming of potentially doing the impossible this season, given the football they are playing at the moment.

Perhaps a little surprisingly, Pape Matar Sarr has named Cristian Romero as the best player in training at Tottenham.

Romero’s lacklustre performances last season were a source of much frustration for Spurs fans, particularly since it was clear that the 25-year-old was extremely talented, given his performances at the international level and the start he had to his Tottenham career.

Much to the supporters’ delight, the 25-year-old has returned to his old self this season, putting in the sort of dominant displays that we see him do for Argentina.

Romero has also managed to control his aggression much better, which is perhaps the consequence of him now becoming the leader of the new-look young Spurs backline.

Having a reliable centre-back partner beside him in the form of Micky van de Ven has certainly helped the former Atalanta man, who is clearly held in very high regard by his teammates.

Cristian Romero is impressing at Hotspur Way

Pedro Porro labelled the defender as the best centre-back in the world on Instagram this week, and Sarr has now revealed that he is a cut above the rest in training.

The Senegalese midfielder told Footy Culture: “But for me, my best in training is Cuti Romero.”

Spurs Web Opinion

For Sarr to name Romero ahead of the likes of James Maddison, Son Heung-min and Yves Bissouma is certainly a big statement and it shows just how highly the Argentine is rated by his teammates.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, has named Cristian Romero as one of the toughest players he has faced.

Romero first made his name in the Serie A with Atalanta, winning the Serie A Defender of the Year award in the 2020-21 season before making a big-money move to Tottenham.

While his first couple of years at North London had a few ups and downs, the 25-year-old is showing this season just why he is rated so highly by his peers, being the leader of the Spurs defensive unit, who have the joint best record in the Premier League.

Cristian Romero left a mark on Victor Osimhen

It was during Romero’s time at Atalanta that Osimhen came up against him, and the prolific striker admitted that he found it quite difficult to play against the Tottenham man.

When asked to name his toughest opponents, the Nigerian told TV Play (as relayed by Il Messaggero): “I mention two names. One is Romero who is now at Tottenham. I remember his speed when he was at Atalanta. I was also impressed by Smalling.”

Osimhen has also been mooted as a shock target for Tottenham recently, with Fichajes claiming a couple of weeks ago that Spurs are exploring a €120m (£103.8m) deal for the striker, whose relationship with Napoli had gone sour.

Last week Italian journalist Salvatore Biazzo has named Spurs among the various Premier League clubs eyeing a move for the Napoli star (Kiss Kiss Napoli via Siomo Il Napoli).

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Romero would be a nightmare for strikers to play up against as he is always in your face and up for a battle, and is relentless throughout the 90 minutes.

Nine games in is pretty much a quarter of the season. To many, 25% is arguably the first substantial percentage of them all. 10% is not to be sniffed at but the difference between 10 and 25 per cent off a garment in a department store – is significant.

Apply this to a Premier League campaign and it means it is a large enough sample size for people to start getting excited – and justifiably so.

Let’s get it right then. A quarter of the way through the 2023-24 Premier League season, Tottenham Hotspur are top of the league. Now the cynical out there, and there are a few, will point to similar seasons where the club had good starts and roll their eyes.

Indeed, last season was the best the club has had in the Premier League. But even the most partisan of fans must admit that the football was not good. We were winning games solely through the brilliance of individuals and that formula does not last – just look at Manchester United this season.

Quite rightly, I believe, I laughed incredulously when some people tried to make a comparison between the manager of month successes of Ange and Nuno. Nuno won his after three 1-0 victories. Now I will not take anything away from him for the City win.

But the subsequent performances over Watford and Wolves were turgid and lucky. Conversely, Ange’s draw and two wins, were jammed full with daring, verve and panache. Above all, there is a plan and a clearly defined way of playing.

Roll on to the ninth game and very little has changed. The team has stayed true to their principles and sit on top of the pile. Unlike those previous campaigns, you cannot point to any lucky points acquired. Admittedly, we were, for once, on the right side of fortune with the Liverpool VAR debacle, but based on the stats for that game, we should have won.

People may argue that we could have won against Arsenal, but conversely, we could have lost quite easily – so a share of the spoils was about right.

Thus, I am left with a dilemma. Do I, in true Big Ange Cult tradition, commit to a wholehearted belief that we could indeed win the league? Or do I err on the side of caution and play down the possibility?

If I wanted to consider the title a viable option, I could draw on the Leicester experience of 2016. Weirdly, there are a number of similarities.

Both sides only had a fixture list consisting of mainly league games. In the make-up of the teams, there are genuine comparisons. A free-scoring forward: for Vardy, read Son. A centre midfielder capable of dictating play and breaking up attacks: Kante/ Bissouma, and a midfield maestro capable of scoring and assisting: Mahrez and Maddison. All of whom played in front of a solid, consistent and well-drilled defence and ‘keeper. Even as I write this, I am tempted to believe.

Can Tottenham really win the Premier League?

Yet I can’t do it – for two reasons.

Firstly, the ability Leicester had that season to put out the same starting eleven almost beggared belief. Too many of our key players have a history of picking up an injury and being out for a period of time: Maddison, Bissouma, Son and Romero have all had significant lay-offs in the last couple of years, and an injury to one or more of those players could prove fatal to any potential title charge.

Indeed, the Fulham gamed served to illuminate quite starkly our lack of depth outside the starting eleven. Without Bissouma, the slick play out from the back was just not possible at the level it has been. Credit to Sarr and Hojbjerg for trying, but they do not have the skillset to receive the ball, spin on a sixpence and release the forwards in a fluid motion.

Not many do. This in turn meant the defenders, Romero in particular, were more profligate on the ball and were trying to force the issue more than they have done recently.

Similarly, if Romero or Van de Ven were to miss games, the drop-off would be significant. The pace, awareness and technique of our defensive duo has been beautiful to behold and has evoked nostalgic memories of Jan and Toby.

However, with Sanchez being sold the back-up looks bare. Ashley Phillips has been commanding a place on the bench of late and I wonder if he is showing something in training that gives Ange the impression that the youngster could be ready to step up.

Even so, he is untried, unknown and ostensibly a shot in the dark. Our full-backs have defied expectations and have performed at a superb level so far this season, but an injury to either, Destiny in particular weakens our team significantly.

Further up the pitch, it has become apparent that James Maddison is the literal and metaphorical heartbeat of this team. There is no one in the squad who comes close to giving us what he offers. The same could be said of Son, who is proving to be ruthless in front of goal in his new central position.

Indeed, the striking options beyond Son and Kulu, don’t scream out ‘consistent high performance’. Brennan Johnson is an exciting prospect, but needs to be given time to bed into the forward three.

The injuries to Perisic and Solomon do not help the cause, the Croatian, in particular, seemed to finally have been clicking into the player we thought we had signed.

Then there is Richarlison. Although I was never convinced that he had the ability to play for a top Premier League team, I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt. Sadly, the previous eighteen months have brutally demonstrated that Tottenham is too much of a step up – especially in this new way of playing that demands high technical ability, vision and subtlety.

All this could be potentially excused if he was able to convert chances. Unfortunately, he is not and it even appeared against Fulham that the opposition were happy for him to be on the ball, whereas Maddison, Kulu and Son were instantly harassed and closed down.

He is just not good enough and Spurs should cash in as soon as possible, because he will only depreciate in value.

The second reason I can’t entertain a title tilt is the quality of opposition. In 2015-16, Tottenham should have won it. Not only did they fail to, they came third in a two-horse race.

There were few viable contenders that year in all fairness. Arsenal were limping towards to end of the Wenger era, Klopp’s time at Liverpool was just in its infancy, and Manchester City and Chelsea were awaiting the arrival of Pep and Conte respectively.

Manchester United, for those that are interested, were in another fruitless transitional phase as they desperately sought (and still seek) to effectively replace Sir Alex Ferguson.

This season the calibre of opposition is much greater. The Manchester City juggernaut shows little sign of abating, despite the De Bruyne injury. At Liverpool, Klopp’s recent reinvention is in full swing and, as much as we hate to accept it, Arsenal are a formidable opponent under Mikel Arteta.

To be finishing ahead of one of these teams would be impressive – all of them, highly unlikely. Add into the mix teams such as Newcastle, Villa and Brighton and it looks like a tough league to be competing in.

I am loving watching Tottenham, but any fans who truly understand football will understand that Spurs supporters saying ‘Why not?’ are saying so with their tongue firmly in their cheek.

Certain outlets and radio shows will try and advance the ‘Tottenham for the title’ talk because it provokes outrage and debate. The truth is that this team need to evolve and improve without the added pressure of being identified as title contenders.

The future is bright and undoubtedly exciting, so let’s just enjoy the ride without worrying about the destination just yet.

Pedro Porro thinks his Tottenham teammate Cristian Romero is the best centre-back in the world.

Romero has now emerged as the leader of the new-look, young, Tottenham backline, with the 25-year-old now having plenty of experience under his belt in big tournaments, having won both the World Cup and Copa America with Argentina.

The former Atalanta man has formed a formidable partnership at the back with Micky van de Ven, having hardly put a foot wrong so far this season.

The pair delivered another solid display to keep a clean sheet against Fulham on Monday, with the Lilywhites emerging 2-0 winners on the night.

Is Romero one of the best defenders in the PL?

Romero is used to getting some high words of praise from his international teammates, with Lionel Messi and Rodrigo de Paul labelling him the best centre-back in the world recently (Mirror).

Some pundits such as Alejandro Moreno have scoffed at those claims (ESPN FC) but it is an assertion that Porro certainly agrees with.

The Tottenham right-back commented on Romero’s Instagram post: “Best in the world. Mi cutiiiiii!!”

Spurs Web Opinion

Romero has always had the raw materials to be one of the best centre-backs in the world, but much like the rest of the Tottenham squad, he struggled at times last season. The 27-year-old needs to show consistency over a year or two to be in the conversation for the best defender in the world.

Son Heung-min has lavished praise on Cristian Romero, admitting that he loves watching the way the Argentine plays.

Romero’s talent has never been in doubt, with the centre-back producing some excellent displays for both club and country over the last few years.

Some perhaps doubted his temperament, with the defender often finding himself getting into altercations on the pitch.

However, so far this season, the signs are that Romero is starting to learn to control his aggression and channel it appropriately.

The 25-year-old has hardly put a foot wrong this campaign and with his pacy central defensive partner, Micky van de Ven, sweeping behind him, the former Atalanta star has been at his combative best.

Romero has also been able to showcase his ability on the ball in Ange Postecoglou’s system, with the centre-back often making some line-breaking passes.

Heung-min Son is a big fan of Cristian Romero

The Argentina international has emerged as the leader of Tottneham’s young backline and Son waxed lyrical about his teammate.

When asked about Romero’s display, the forward told Spurs Play after the win over Fulham: “Cuti is just special. Just look at him, I could watch him all day sitting he and watch the way he plays.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I have been impressed with the composure and maturity that Romero has shown this season, which could be a direct consequence of him being handed the vice-captaincy by Postecoglou.

Jermaine Beckford thought Cristian Romero was ‘a lost cause’, but has been surprised by the maturity that the Argentine has shown this season.

Romero arrived at Tottenham in 2021 with a big reputation, having won the Serie A Defender of the Year award during the 2020-21 campaign.

The centre-back certainly showed plenty of promise during his first season in English football, but much like many players in the Spurs squad, his performances declined considerably last season.

The 25-year-old particularly struggled during the second half of the campaign, being part of quite a leaky defensive unit.

However, Romero has been a player transformed so far this season, with his partnership with Micky van de Ven having all the makings of a world-class pairing.

Cristian Romero has been reborn under Postecoglou

The Argentine has also been able to control his aggression better this season after being made vice-captain by Postecoglou, which Beckford admitted to being pleasantly surprised by.

The former Everton striker told Premier League Productions (22/10/23 at 9:55 pm): “Romero, I thought he was a lost cause, I thought he was. He was too hot-headed, but he seems to have got that control.

“Everybody knows their roles. But they push forward and defend as a unit. That’s something I didn’t think Ange Postecoglou would be able to bring to this side as quickly as possible.”

Spurs Web Opinion

From the outside, it appears as if Romero feels a sense of ownership with this current Spurs side, just like he does with the Argentina set-up, which was not always the case under Conte. The decision to hand him the vice-captaincy has proven to be an excellent decision by Ange.

Despite coming off at half-time in the recent Argentina game, Cristian Romero has revealed it was merely precautionary and hinted he will be ready for Tottenham’s game against Fulham next week.

As far as Tottenham players go, Cristian Romero is right up there as one of the most important in the squad right now. He is the lynchpin of the Spurs defence, and is even one of Ange Postecoglou‘s vice-captain.

The 25-year-old has formed a brilliant partnership with new signing, Micky van de Ven at the heart of the Spurs defence, and the pair have seemingly rectified one of the biggest issues facing the squad from last season.

Romero is going from strength to strength at the moment, and has been performing admirably for Argentina on international duty over the last week.

However, Romero was removed at half-time in the 2-0 win over Peru and the Evening Standard claimed this was due to injury. A subsequent note from The Athletic revealed it was nothing too serious, though.

Romero puts Spurs fans at ease with injury update

Now, Romero himself has offered his take on the situation, and it sounds like Spurs fans can still expect to see him take the field for the upcoming game against Fulham next Monday.

Speaking to La Voz after the game, Romero said: “The right ankle had swollen too much. That’s why I decided to go out at halftime, since we have an important home game with Tottenham Hotspur on Monday against Fulham.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We cannot lose Cristian Romero right now. Probably more than any other player, he is crucial, as we have so little depth at centre-back at the moment. His leadership skills, experience, and form at the moment are invaluable, and the fact he sounds like he will be fit for Fulham is a big relief.

According to The Standard, Cristian Romero was withdrawn with an injury at half-time in Argentina’s 2-0 win at Peru on Tuesday, but The Athletic have reported that the knock is ‘not serious’ and he is optimistic about a return against Fulham.

Spurs fans had a major scare when they saw Son Heung-min limp off to the tunnel at half-time of South Korea’s friendly against Vietnam yesterday (Football.London), but thankfully, the forward played the second half without any discomfort and even got on the scoresheet.

Romero injury is not thought to be serious for Spurs

Just when it seemed like all the Tottenham stars had come away unscathed from international duty, it emerged that Romero might have a problem.

The 25-year-old was replaced by Real Betis defender German Pezzella just after half-time yesterday, and The Standard reported that the Tottenham man came off due to injury concerns.

This information was also backed up by All About Argentina, who stated that Romero complained of discomfort at half-time.

Fortunately, The Athletic have since reported that Romero will be assessed by Spurs, but early indications are that the injury is not serious and he could still play against Fulham on Monday.

Spurs Web Opinion

Let us hope that Romero only came off as a precaution and it is not a serious issue that could put him out of action for a few weeks.

Centre-back is the one area where we cannot afford any injuries as Postecoglou would be forced to turn to Dier, who the Australian seemingly does not trust.

Cristian Romero has been impressing back in Argentina again during the international break as he started against Paraguay on Thursday in a 1-0 win.

Romero has been on fire for Spurs so far this season, putting his troubles of last campaign under Antonio Conte well and truly behind him.

The central defender has forged an impressive partnership with new signing Micky Van de Ven, and the Spurs vice-captain is now the senior figure in a new-look backline.

Romero continues to show his world-class ability

Following Argentina’s World Cup victory last year, the standards are certainly high back in his home country, but Romero continues to impress more and more with every trip back to South America.

TyC Sports claim that Romero was pressing high against Paraguay last night, taking risks with his positioning but also reaping the rewards for his bravery.

They gave the centre-back an eight out of ten rating for his performance, where he earned a win and a clean sheet. The publication wrote: “The level of risk he assumes in each advance is as high as it is effective. It psychologically demolishes his rivals.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Cristian Romero is taking his game to the next level this season. The mistakes are getting fewer and further between, while the level of his performance has taken to new heights. Long may it continue!

Cristian Romero has admitted in an interview with Argentine media that he is really enjoying the way things are now going at Tottenham Hotspur.

The 2022-23 season was a bittersweet one for Romero as although he made history by helping Argentina win the World Cup, the centre-back struggled to produce consistent displays for his club, particularly in the second half of the campaign.

The former Juventus man admitted during the summer that he was not happy with the standard of his performances last season but insisted that he is looking to put that behind him and showcase his best this season (The Athletic).

Romero has certainly managed to do that so far, having formed a formidable partnership at the back with new signing Micky van de Ven.

Cristian Romero is loving life at Tottenham

The centre-back seems to have matured due to the additional leadership responsibility he has now been handed, with Ange Postecoglou making him Tottneham’s vice-captain.

While on international duty with Argentina, the 25-year-old said (via Gaston Edul): “I’m really enjoying the moment at Tottenham.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There seems to be a feel-good factor around the Tottenham squad at the moment, which was evidently missing last season. That is probably down to the fact that Ange has taken away the fear of failure and asked the players to express themselves on the pitch.

The international break is here, and Tottenham Hotspur have a number of players involved with their respective countries. Here’s when and where each player will feature.

Tottenham go into the international break at the top of the Premier League table after an incredible start to the season under Ange Postecoglou.

The Spurs boss has bid farewell to a large portion of his squad for the next couple of weeks, as various players head out to join up with their national squads.

There are Euro 2024 qualifiers, friendly matches, youth squad action, and even some World Cup 2026 qualifiers on the way in the coming days.

On Wednesday, Ben Davies captained Wales to a 4-0 win over Gibraltar at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground. The Spurs defender even opened the scoring on the night, nodding home from three yards out.

Meanwhile, Tottenham youngsters Luca Gunter and Ashley Phillips played the full 90 minutes as England U19s drew 0-0 with Montenegro. Alfie Dorrington was an unused substitute for the game, while Jamie Donley didn’t make the matchday squad.

Fellow youngster, Will Andiyapan, was in action for Wales U19s, playing the full 90 minutes in another 0-0 draw, against Austria.

Cristian Romero has been named in the EA FC Team of the Week following his exploits against Luton Town last time out in the Premier League.

While earning a clean sheet against a newly promoted side would normally be nothing to shout about, Romero was put under increased pressure following Yves Bissouma’s red card just before half-time.

Spurs managed to grab a goal at the start of the second 45 through Romero’s partner in crime, Micky Van de Ven, before defending their hearts out for the remainder of the game.

Cristian Romero named in EA FC Team of the Week

Romero walked away with all three points for his side and another clean sheet, with a Team of the Week card to top it all off.

The Argentine World Cup winner was given an 82-rated card at the start of the game, but that has now increased to an 84, including an 86 rating for defending and 84 for physical.

Spurs Web Opinion:

EA FC would have based their ratings on last season, which is why Romero wasn’t at least an 84 to start with. Matched up against the other centre-backs in the league, I think the Spurs star should be pretty close to the front of the pack in terms of rating now.

Robbie Earle has praised Ange Posecoglou for the impact he has had on Crisitan Romero and admitted that the Argentine looks a much more mature player this season.

After an impressive debut season in the Premier League following his switch in the summer of 2021, Romero’s form fell off a cliff last season, with the defender particularly struggling in the second half of the campaign after returning from the World Cup.

However, the 25-year-old has demonstrated so far this season just why he is so highly thought of by many at Spurs as well as back in Argentina, emerging as a real leader of this new-look, young, Tottenham backline.

Romero delivered a battling display on Saturday to help the Lilywhites emerge with a 1-0 win over Kenilworth Road, showing plenty of aggression while not crossing the line like he was previously prone to.

WhoScored named the Tottenham man in their Team of the Week, giving him a rating of 8.56, which is one of the highest across the Premier League in Matchweek eight.

Is Cristian Romero taking his game to a new level?

Earl said on The 2 Robbies podcast on the back of Spurs’ win over Luton: “What I’ve seen under Ange, Rob, is a more tempered, controlled Romero. There’s still been a bit of fire in there once or twice.

“I’ve seen a Romero who can pick a pass out from the right side with van de Ven, hit a nice, long diagonal, step into midfield if he has to and start an overload.

“I’ve seen a Romero who’s happy to go one-on-one and defend when they squeeze in and the full-backs go on. We’ve seen a Romero who scores the goal at Brentford, has a concussion, and wants to stay on.

“His manager drags him off disappointed and wants to play. I’ve seen a guy who looks to me, at 25 years of age, as though he’s enjoying the maturity and the responsibility of being in a young team, next to a young centre-back.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Ange has managed to get the best out of Romero while also getting him to control his aggression, which is something Antonio Conte quite evidently struggled to do. That is yet another case of the Australian demonstrating his outstanding man-management skills.

Cristian Romero has been named in WhoScored’s Premier League Team of the Week following his gutsy display in Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Luton Town.

Romero, much like many players in the Tottenham squad, was well below his best last season as the team struggled to deliver consistent performances under Antonio Conte.

The Argentine appears to be a player transformed under Ange Postecoglou, seemingly relishing the role of being the leader of this young Spurs backline.

The 25-year-old was wearing the captain’s armband for much of the second half at Kenilworth Road as James Maddison and Son Heung-min had been substituted, and he certainly delivered a captain’s performance, dealing impressively with the longballs that the home side played over the top.

Romero’s central defensive partner, Micky van de Ven stole the limelight after netting his first goal for Spurs, but WhoScored have named the former Atalanta man in their Team of the Week, giving him a rating of 8.56, which is one of the highest across the Premier League over last weekend.

Cristian Romero makes Team of the Week

The website wrote about Romero: “Tottenham head into the international break top of the table after their hard-fought 1-0 win at Luton on Saturday. Spurs went down to 10 men shortly before the break, with Cristian Romero leading by example at the back.

“The Argentine ensured the three points for the north London side with impressive returns of 12 clearances, three tackles and three interceptions in a player of the match performance that saw him yield a WhoScored rating of 8.56.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Micky van de Ven’s calmness and his ability to sweep in behind with his pace bring the best out of Romero as the 25-year-old can now be aggressive, knowing that his centre-back partner is available to cover for him. The Argentine’s quality on the ball is also quite underrated as he consistently keeps delivering line-breaking passes to the attackers.
