If TEAMtalk’s latest update is to be believed, Newcastle have now reached out to the player’s entourage over a potential move.

The report states the Magpies are actively seeking cover for Sandro Tonali as the Italian is expected to face a lengthy ban after admitting to gambling breaches.

If I was Kalvin Phillips, I wouldn’t feel very reassured by these comments. Guardiola could easily have put the rumours to bed and explained his intentions to use Phillips more often, but he didn’t and I reckon we will almost definitely see him move on in January now. I think there will be a lot of competition to sign him, though, and I don’t think Spurs will win that race.

Phillips has now given a big indication that he is open to a move by stating that he wants minutes under his belt ahead of the Euros.

He told The Telegraph following Englnad’s 3-1 win over Italy: “I want to be playing as much as possible but I haven’t done that for a year and a half.

Now, according to the latest from The Telegraph, Hojbjerg’s replacement may have been found in the form of Kalvin Phillips.

The Man City midfielder is apparently well aware that he “needs to start playing more regularly” if he is to secure a spot in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad and is now expected to “consider a move” away from the Etihad in January.

The Mirror have now revealed that City were willing to sanction a loan move for Philips in the summer but the midfielder wanted to stay and fight for his place.

It is suggested that Pep Guardiola’s men could once again be open to sanctioning a temporary move, although a permanent sale might now prove more favourable.

O’Hara is certainly correct to claim that Phillips would not get into Tottenham’s side considering the partnership that Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have forged, while Rodrigo Bentancur is set to return from injury before the end of the year and Oliver Skipp is able to provide cover, and that is without even suggesting that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could also leave in January.

A six-month loan could be an option with Bissouma and Sarr heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations set to run from the middle of January to mid-February.

Realistically speaking, we need at least two wing-backs, a left-centre-back and a central midfielder and one forward this summer, if we are to have hopes of competing with City and Liverpool next season.

If we manage to bring in Bastoni, Kostic, Spence, Eriksen, Phillips and Jesus while letting go of Winks, Sanchez, Emerson, Ndombele, Lo Celso and Bergwijn, that will be an outstanding window for us.

Finding buyers for some of our deadwood will be a challenge, given that not a lot of clubs outside the Premier League have too much money to spend. I would expect Paratici to try to propose some part-exchange deals.

Phillips is one of the most talented midfielders in the Premier League and has seen his game time this season limited significantly by a hamstring injury which ruled him out for 19 matches (transfermarkt).

Tottenham’s ‘homegrown’ player balancing act is something the club needs to address this summer, however, a move for an established England international would come at a premium.

Phillips has emerged as one of Leeds’ most important players after the club secured promotion back to the top flight in 2020. 

However, the 26-year-old has been absent for a large chunk of the current campaign, missing 15 games since picking up a hamstring injury in December (Transfermarkt). 

But despite Phillips’ fitness worries this term, 90min have reported the likes of Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are tracking him ahead of a potential transfer this summer. 

Despite the calibre of club said to be keeping an eye on the midfielder at such a high level, Sherwood does not think he should secure such a big move.

The pundit suggested he would improve sides like Tottenham, Man United and Arsenal, who are all currently vying to secure a place in the Premier League top four.

He said on The Kelly & Wrighty Show (01/04/22 – via MOTLeedsNews): “I don’t think he’ll leave for money. He’s a trophy man.

“If he goes to Manchester City or Liverpool, he might not play for them. He improves Manchester United, Spurs and Arsenal.”

Phillips has been good for Leeds since their promotion, injuries aside, and he would be a useful asset for whoever chooses to pursue him. 

But he may not be of that elite quality to play at the highest level, and unfortunately, Spurs are not in the upper echelons at the moment. He definitely could do a job for the club, but the midfield is a little congested currently so movement would need to happen first.

The 25-year-old has established himself as a linchpin in the heart of Marcelo Bielsa’s midfield and has been one of Leeds’ top performers since their promotion back to the top flight. 

Phillips’ performances for the Yorkshire club have also translated onto the international stage with England, playing a starring role in the Euro 2020 run to the final.

Although he is contracted with Leeds until the summer of 2024, there continue to be rumours around his future at Elland Road, with some linking him with a step up to a bigger club.

Former Premier League midfielder Muamba believes the likes of Spurs and rivals Arsenal could suit the midfielder going forward, as well as both Manchester clubs. 

Speaking on his Twitch channel, he said: “Listen, Phillips will get a lot of offers come the transfer window, maybe not in January, but in summer a lot of teams will be after him because he’s a good footballer and he can pass the ball very well. 

“I see him going somewhere like Manchester United or City, I don’t think he’ll go to Chelsea, but maybe he could go to Arsenal or maybe Tottenham, it depends which manager wants to take him, he’s a good box to box player, but he doesn’t score enough in his position.”

Spurs Web Opinion 

Phillips has been a stand-out performer for Leeds in the past 18 months, so it wouldn’t surprise anyone if they were to receive plenty of offers for him in the coming transfer windows.

He’d fit pretty well at Spurs and is also dynamic in that he can slot into defence, but it will probably be a tough move to complete.

Spurs, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal are all reportedly ‘keeping tabs’ on the midfielder’s situation with Leeds United.

Leeds and Phillips are both allegedly ‘aware’ of this interest and the Whites are therefore ready to make him the highest-paid player at the club to secure his long-term future in West Yorkshire.

Compared to his England teammates, Phillips is reportedly earning considerably less – his current deal was signed in 2019 when he was a Championship player.

That contract still has a healthy three years left with it expiring in 2024 but Leeds are still willing to extend it and offer him a lot more money.

This comes as no shock given Phillips’ influence on Marcelo Bielsa’s team – he is a key part of their growing status as a Premier League side.

He also introduced himself as a star on the international stage with his great performances for England this summer during Euro 2020.

Phillips is a class act who would be a great acquisition for every Premier League side. He will, however, be very difficult to steal. Leeds would not let him go easy and he is born and bred in Yorkshire so he is very happy where he is.
