According to Dutch journalist Rik Elfrink, PSV Eindhoven are the latest club to monitor the situation surrounding Tottenham Hotspur’s Bryan Gil with a view to making a move for the youngster before the month is over.

Gil joined Tottenham in the summer of 2021, but has so far failed to truly establish himself in Antonio Conte’s side. The Spaniard has amassed just 30 appearances for Spurs in his time in North London, with most of those coming from the bench (Transfermarkt).

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Valencia and has been continuously linked with a move back to Spain in some way, shape, or form since. Just a couple of weeks ago, Valencia were thought to be looking at Gil once more (Estadio Deportivo).

The 21-year-old has made 10 appearances this season (Transfermarkt) and appeared to be making some progress after the World Cup. The arrival of Arnaut Danjuma today, though, may have pushed Gil further down the pecking order in the Spurs attack.

One thing’s for sure, Gil would not be short of options should he and Spurs choose to part ways, be it permanently or temporarily. The latest club to join the list of admirers for the winger is Dutch side PSV.

On the Eredivisie side’s interest, Elfrink said: “PSV also follows the performance of Bryan Gil of Tottenham Hotspur. Many opportunities to strengthen the team in the coming week. See what comes of it. It is clear that the need to take further action is also recognized internally.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I’ve said it before, but it would be a real shame to see Bryan Gil leave the club. His game time is probably going to be more limited now, but he’s still a valuable asset who can be useful from the bench. If we can shift Lucas Moura instead, we should keep Gil.

According to The Telegraph, former Spurs academy starlet Noni Madueke has emerged as a transfer target for Leicester City.

Madueke swapped North London for Eindhoven in 2018, signing with PSV after he became a free agent.

Spurs reportedly offered the youngster a new deal, but the London-born winger wanted to attempt to progress his career in the Eredivisie where he would get more regular game time (The Sun).

The 20-year-old has now made 70 appearances for PSV, combining 18 goals with 14 assists in that time (Transfermarkt).

Madueke’s impressive performances in Holland have reportedly alerted Brendan Rodgers who is said to be interested in bringing the player to the King Power Stadium this summer (Telegraph).

A number of Premier League clubs are reportedly keeping tabs on the English talent, with 90min previously crediting both Leeds United and Newcastle United with an interest in the forward.

Spurs are also tracking any potential movements, with the Lilywhites keen to bring Madueke back to N17 (90min).

Spurs Web Opinion

In hindsight, allowing Noni to leave was a big mistake. He has been ripping it up with PSV and it isn’t long before he earns himself a bumper move. Unfortunately, there was likely nothing Spurs could have done to stop him as he wanted game time.

I can’t see Spurs going for him this summer after the arrival of Richarlison, but if they are truly keen on reuniting with the player, they may have to act decisively.

PSV Eindhoven are closing in on signing former Tottenham Hotspur striker Carlos Vinicius from Benfica, according to Rik Elfrink and quoted by Fabrizo Romano.

The agreement is now ‘imminent’ for the 26-year-old to leave Portugal and join PSV in the Eredivisie.

The Brazillian was on loan at Spurs last season, used as a back-up for Harry Kane; a void which Spurs are yet to fill.

Vinicius struggled to mark his stamp in the Premier League. He only accumulated 303 minutes  – scoring one goal.

The 26-year-old’s return in the Europa League was impressive; he contributed nine goals in nine games in that competition (Transfermarkt).

Despite that, Spurs decided to not re-sign the striker on a permanent basis. The loan deal had a £36m option to buy which was not exercised.

Vinicius now looks certain to leave Benfica in the hope to play some consistent first-team football, something the striker could not achieve at Spurs due to Kane being ahead of him in the pecking order.

SpursWeb Opinion

Although a backup striker is needed, £36m was too much money for the striker. PSV seems like a good fit for him. I can imagine he will score a lot of goals in the Dutch league and absolutely good luck to him.

Frenkie de Jong made a high-profile move from Ajax to Barcelona last summer and is already proving himself to be a vital player in Spain, racking up 37 appearances (Wikipedia).

De Jong represented Ajax for three seasons in the Eredivisie, making 89 appearances and scoring five goals.

The midfield man was a crucial part of the 2018/19 domestic title-winning Ajax side, however, the Dutch giants lost out to PSV Eindhoven the season before.

Steven Bergwijn was a part of the PSV title-winning sides in 2014/15, 2015/16, and 2017/18, facing De Jong on numerous occasions during his final three seasons in the Netherlands.

Bergwijn played 149 games for PSV, scoring 31 goals before making a move to Tottenham Hotspur in the January 2020 transfer window (Wikipedia).

Despite the fact that De Jong has come up against some of the top players in Spain, as well as various stars of the Champions League for both Ajax and Barcelona, he named Bergwijn as the toughest opponent he has ever faced.

The Dutch international said (Live interview for Barcelona): “It is difficult because, of course, I don’t only play against one player during a match. But at Ajax, I was sometimes used as a central defender and we played against PSV. Steven Bergwijn is then the most difficult opponent for me. He now plays with Tottenham Hotspur.”

According to a report inThe Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in landing young PSV Eindhoven defender Nawaaz Landfeld.

The 16-year-old left-back is yet to make his debut for PSV’s senior side but has been one of the stars of the club’s under-17 team.

His performances for the under-17 side have reportedly caught Tottenham’s eye, with the young full-back having been at PSV’s academy since 2016.

The teenager, who is known for his ability to get up the pitch and support in attack, has previously revealed that he idolises Real Madrid defender Marcelo (Voetbal Primeur).

Spurs have had several problems in defence this season and it has been reported that Jose Mourinho is keen on revamping the club’s backline in the summer (The Express).

The report inThe Sun suggests that Spurs have struck up a good relationship with PSV after the £27 million capture of Steven Bergwijn in January.

The Lilywhites are now expected to return for Landfeld’s services in the summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

Looking at the players we have been linked with over the last few months, it looks like we are paying more attention to the young talents from the Dutch and French markets now that we were previously. Perhaps, that has something to do with the change in coaching staff as the new management team will likely have set different priorities.

Tottenham Hotspur made their third winter signing this week in the form of Steven Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven.

This followed the 18-month loan acquisition of Gedson Fernandes from Benfica, as well as the permanent purchase of Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis after a six-month loan.

Spurs paid a reported £27m to bring Bergwijn from the Eredivisie to the Premier League in the January transfer market, but the player himself was also left out of pocket.

The Mirror claim that Bergwijn gave up almost £6m in bonus payments to join Jose Mourinho and Spurs last month.

A bonus payment would have apparently been due to the Dutch winger if he had stayed at PSV until the summer, with the player being told he would have to forfeit it for a move.

The 22-year-old has been in fantastic form for the Dutch club over the past two seasons, catching Tottenham’s eye this year.

Tottenham Hotspur managed to complete three January signings in the winter transfer window this year as Jose Mourinho begins to rebuild the squad.

While Christian Eriksen was sold and Danny Rose was loaned out, the Lilywhites welcomed Gedson Fernandes on an 18-month loan, Giovani Lo Celso on a permanent deal, and Steven Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven.

The latter came somewhat out of the blue for Spurs fans, as the 22-year-old winger joined the North London club for a fee of around £27m (Daily Mail).

Bergwijn has already played 29 games for PSV this season, scoring six goals and assisting 13 more for his teammates (TransferMarkt).

Unfortunately, Tottenham were unable to bring in a new centre-forward for Bergwijn to play off, which Mourinho acknowledged was a problem in the midst of Kane’s injury.

However, he claimed that Bergwijn can play on the left and right, which matches up nicely with Son who prefers the left and Lamela and Moura who prefer the right.

Mourinho said (Football London): “In the club, [he’s a] left-winger. In the national team, right-winger. He doesn’t have a favourite.

“For me, both, and that’s a good thing. Lamela prefers to play on the right side, Lucas of course also prefers to play on the right side.

“Son prefers to play on the left but it doesn’t matter for him to play on the right so with these four guys, we have many options for the wide areas and the wide areas are very important for our future.

“Imagine Harry Kane with these four options on the side, it’s magnificent. In this moment, are we going to have a problem [without Spurs signing a striker]? Yes, we are going to have a problem but that’s the way it is.”

It has been one of the swiftest transfer sagas that I can remember. The signing of Steven Bergwijn from PSV is complete! But what will the Dutchman offer in a Lilywhite shirt? Well, one thing is certain, the Dutchman will offer youthful energy to this Tottenham team.

I thoroughly believe that the signing is a statement of intent from Jose Mourinho and Daniel Levy. It is clear that they are both focussed on a project revolving around younger players.

When you think of the likes of: Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Harry Winks, Dele Alli, Davinson Sanchez, Ryan Sessegnon, and Japhet Tangana, they all have one thing in common. These are players all in their early twenties and, in all honesty, yet to hit their prime.

Steven Bergweijn also fits that mould, guaranteed to bring raw pace at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, there seems to be much more to the winger’s game.

In the last few years, the Dutchman has recorded very respectable stats in the Eredivise. Contributing to 15 goals in 16 games so far this season (TransferMarkt). In addition to this, Bergwijn was involved in 28 goals last season as PSV finished second to Ajax (TransferMarkt).

It is a signing that will certainly ease the pressure off the likes of Heung-Min Son and Lucas Moura in attack, who in reality have worked non-stop in recent weeks as a result of the injury to Harry Kane.

It comes as a huge surprise that no-one else came in for Bergwijn. The 22-year-old will now hope to take the Premier League by storm as he eyes a place in a bright Netherlands team for Euro 2020.

But, as Rafael van der Vaart said on Twitter, it is a signing that we will certainly be patient with (Twitter).

I have to say I am incredibly excited to see the Dutchman in a Tottenham shirt soon, and it seems that the majority of Tottenham fans on social media feel the same way.

Welcome, Stevie!

Tottenham Hotspur already boast plenty of pace on the counter-attack and in behind in the likes of Heung-min Son and Lucas Moura.

However, they have now added yet another lightning pair of boots to that line-up with the signing of Steven Bergwijn from PSV this January.

Tottenham officially announced that they had signed the winger this morning as he completes his move from the Eredivisie to the Premier League.

This comes as the winger underwent a medical in North London last night in preparation for the big winter window transfer.

Bergwijn is known for his immense pace and trickery, while also being able to play in any position across the front line.

Dutch football expert and journalist Marcel van der Kraan told Sky Sports (Transfer Talk Podcast 28/01/20) that Bergwijn will be an interesting player for Mourinho.

Van der Kraan went as far to say that Bergwijn is the fastest player in the Eredivisie and that the league will never see a pacier player. Big claims indeed!

He said: “He’s small, nippy, quick. I would think he’s the paciest player in the Eredivisie. A pacier player than Bergwijn we will not see again.

“He has been lightning in some top games for PSV, and this is also the reason why Holland coach Ronald Koeman is counting on him at Euro 2020 this summer.

“Koeman has lost Memphis Depay to a cruciate knee ligament injury, and he still has Bergwijn who can do damage as a striker, a left-winger. He can almost play in three or four positions up front. That’s very interesting for Mourinho.

“A player in the Premier League who has absolute pace, and we go back as far as Marc Overmars at Arsenal… when you have pace, class, the Dutch skill and technique, I think those players will do well.”

Tottenham Hotspur officially announced this morning that they have signed 22-year-old Netherlands international and PSV winger Steven Bergwijn.

The club then posted a more in-depth article revealing details of the move, with one eye-catching line revealing that Bergwijn would wear the number 23 shirt.

This squad number was vacant for just 24 hours or so, as Christian Eriksen completed his move to Inter Milan earlier this week, leaving his beloved 23 behind.

That squad number has been the subject of chants from adoring Tottenham fans for the past half-decade, so Bergwijn certainly has some big boots to fill.

Spurs also revealed that the winger’s contract would run until 2025, yet another young player signing up for the long-term in this new Spurs rebuild.

Bergwijn also brings with him title-winning experience, as he claimed the Eredivisie crown in the Netherlands three times with PSV since coming through their youth ranks.

It remains to be seen whether Bergwijn will slot straight into the squad for the upcoming Man City game at the weekend.

Tottenham Hotspur have now officially announced the signing of Steven Bergwijn, their third incoming transfer of this January window.

The 22-year-old winger joins from PSV, one of Tottenham’s Champions League group stage opponents from last season during their route to the final.

However, Bergwijn will now swap the Eredivisie for the Premier League, catching Tottenham’s eye with his impressive 15 goals in 41 games last season (Wikipedia).

Bergwijn had stints in the Ajax and PSV academy system before coming through at the latter and playing a total of 146 games for the senior side, scoring 31 goals.

The winger also already has seven senior caps for the Netherlands senior international side, as well as three Eredivisie titles to his name.

Sky Sports report that Bergwijn is set to cost Spurs £25.6m plus add-ons as he becomes the third signing of the window for the Lilywhites after Gedson Fernandes on loan and Giovani Lo Celso on a permanent deal.

Tottenham Hotspur have certainly been busy in the January transfer window this year as the rebuild in North London continues under Jose Mourinho.

Spurs first brought in Gedson Fernandes from Benfica on an 18-month loan period to bolster the thinning midfield after Moussa Sissoko picked up a knee injury.

The Lilywhites then announced that Giovani Lo Celso, previously on loan from Real Betis, had signed for the club on a permanent basis until 2025.

In the same moment, Tottenham also revealed that Christian Eriksen had been sold to Inter Milan, with the Great Dane’s contract running out in the summer.

Tottenham have now announced a third signing of the winter window in Steven Bergwijn from PSV, with Sky Sports reporting that the winger had his medical on Tuesday night.

The fee is said to be £25.6m plus add-ons for the 22-year-old who scored 15 goals in 41 games last season, as well as another six during this campaign (Sky Sports).

Spurs announced the news with a ‘reveal’ video on their official Twitter channel.

Spurs Web Opinion:

A great signing, both for the present and the future. It looks as if Mourinho is going to be given new players to work with in order to bring glory to the new stadium.

Sky Sports have now reported that Tottenham Hotspur are expected to confirm Steven Bergwijn as a new signing by this evening.

The winger was apparently scheduled to complete his medical in North London on Tuesday night ahead of his move from PSV to Spurs.

The report claims that the final price is set to be £25.6m plus add ons and they even label Bergwijn as a potential replacement for Christian Eriksen, despite differing positions.

The 22-year-old scored an impressive 15 goals in 41 games last season, adding another six strikes during this campaign already (Sky Sports).

Some Spurs fans may be familiar with the player already, as he featured against the club rather recently in last season’s Champions League group stage.

PSV were actually the club to hand Spurs a lifeline in terms of qualification for the knockout stages by holding Inter Milan to a draw that year. Of course, Tottenham went on the reach the final.

Photos have this morning emerged from Dutch news outlet De Telegraaf showing Bergwijn at Hotspur Way which could speed up the club’s announcement of the deal.

Spurs Web Opinion:

What Spurs need right now? No. Is signing Bergwijn a huge statement of intent with regards to the rebuild in North London? Yes. The fact that Levy is splashing out on a position that Spurs do not desperately need can only be a good sign.

It appears that the announcement of Steven Bergwijn as a Tottenham player is only a short while away, as a Dutch media outlet have already published the first interview with him.

Sport Witness report that De Telegraaf actually flew out to London with Bergwijn and his team ahead of the Tottenham transfer.

They arrived on Tuesday morning at Luton Airport on a private jet before hopping in a taxi to Hotspur Way. Of course, Jose Mourinho was there to greet the player at the training facility.

De Telegraaf were even able to get an interview with Bergwijn to publish in their Wednesday edition (29/01/20), even before the announcement of the transfer had been made.

In the quotes, Bergwijn reveals his thoughts on Jose Mourinho as a manager and getting used to playing in the Premier League compared to the Eredivisie.

The online version of the article added that Jan Vertonghen and Michel Vorm came to put the player and his family at ease about the move. It also added that Bergwijn’s contract would run until 2025 (De Telegraaf).

Bergwijn said: “I have always looked up to a top coach like Mourinho. And now I’m going to play for him. It’s great to be here. Just look at the facilities around us. When I play on the Playstation Fifa, I almost always choose a team from the Premier League. I look forward to playing in that great atmosphere.

“Of course it will take some getting used to, but it will all be alright. I think that my physical match is also good in the Premier League. I believe in myself and I really know that I am not there yet. Of course, I have played many matches in the Eredivisie. England is a bit different, but I know what I can do.”

PSV defender Denzel Dumfries has given his blessing to teammate Steven Bergwijn over the attacker’s proposed move to Spurs.

Reports in England and Holland on Sunday claimed that Tottenham had turned their attentions to landing PSV Eindhoven star Steven Bergwijn before the close of the transfer window (Daily Mail).

The forward wasn’t named in the PSV side that took to the field against FC Twente this evening, with PSV later confirming that Bergwijn was the subject of interest from Spurs (Sky Sports Chief Reporter Bryan Swanson).

The forward who can play centrally as well as out wide has already notched up five goals and ten assists in the Eredivisie so far this campaign (transfermarkt).

The Mail reports that the Dutch international will cost Spurs a fee in the region of £21 million.

Dumfries has now revealed that he is proud of Bergwijn for earning a big move to Tottenham.

Speaking to Fox Sports about the winger’s transfer (as relayed by Dutch publication AD), the defender said, “Of course it is a big loss for us. For him, it is a nice step that he cannot ignore.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Dumfries’ statement certainly indicates that a transfer to Spurs is imminent for Bergwijn as the forward would have likely kept his teammates updated over the development. I believe he will be a fabulous addition to the squad given his versatility as he will help provide cover in a couple of attacking positions.

Tottenham Hotspur will likely be without Harry Kane until at least early April, when Spurs claim they expect him to return to training.

This comes after the England captain ruptured the tendon in his left hamstring against Southampton back on New Years Day, which required surgery to correct.

Unfortunately for Jose Mourinho, the Special One has no other senior strikers to choose from in his squad, meaning that Lucas Moura and Heung Min Son have been forced to cover.

Today, reports have emerged that Spurs may be interested in signing PSV winger, Steven Bergwijn before the January window shuts for a fee of around £21m (Daily Mail).

The player has subsequently been left out of PSV’s matchday squad to face FC Twente today and their interim coach has confirmed that he wants to leave the club.

The Guardian have now claimed that Bergwijn’s agent is in England to explore a deal, but there is no agreement yet. The report also adds that Mourinho still wants a new striker regardless of the Bergwijn deal.
