Dejan Kulusevski has rubbished Jurgen Klopp’s suggestion of replaying Tottenham’s clash against Liverpool, remarking that it arose out of their frustration at losing the game.

Luiz Diaz’s goal in the first half of the clash was incorrectly ruled out for offside, with VAR failing to intervene to overturn the call.

The PMGOL subsequently released the audio from the incident, with the tapes clearly demonstrating that there was a miscommunication between the referee and VAR, with the latter thinking that the goal had been given on the field (Sky Sports).

A few days after the incident, Jurgen Klopp controversially stated that a fair resolution would be to have the game replayed (Guardian).

Klopp’s statement was met with widespread criticism for his comments (Mirror), and it has since been reported that the Premier League have made it clear that there is no prospect of replaying the fixture (Football Insider).

The Liverpool drama should be put in the past

Kulusevski has said that while he understands Liverpool’s frustration, refereeing mistakes are part of the game.

When he was asked about Klopp’s comments, the Tottenham man told Fotbollskanalen: “I don’t think anything will happen. Mistakes happen in every game.

“It was just a mistake and they were very angry that they got zero points even though they played a good game, and I understand them. That (that a match is replayed due to a ruling) has probably never happened and I don’t think it will happen.

“There are so many mistakes every match, it’s absolutely insane. Sure, it was a big mistake in a top game and they were obviously very disappointed because it affected the game. But I can find mistakes in every match. So it’s part of the game and you move on.

“We were really good. We played really well when it was eleven against eleven. Then they got a lot better when they got a man sent off and we got a little worse.

“Then they got another man sent off. Both red cards were fair, 100 per cent. Then we had a hard time scoring a goal and in the last second, they scored an own goal. It was incredibly heavy for Liverpool and really important for us.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I think it is time for everyone to put this incident to bed and move on. The important thing is that VAR has learned from the error and the communication protocol has been changed in order to avoid this happening again in the future.

Ange Postecoglou has said that the miscommunication between VAR and the on-field referee in the game between Tottenham and Liverpool does not meet the threshold for replaying the match.

The decision to rule out Luis Diaz’s goal for offside was not overturned as the VAR Darren England thought that the goal had been given on the pitch.

When the officials at Stockley Park realised what had happened, the game had already kicked off, meaning that it was too late for them to intervene.

Unsurprisingly, the incident has made a lot of headlines over the last week, with Jurgen Klopp even suggesting that replaying the game would be the fairest possible solution (Guardian).

Multiple sources have since confirmed that the Premier League will not consider replaying the fixture despite Liverpool’s attempt to escalate the issue (Football Insider).

Postecoglou has now pointed out that even though the type of mistake was unprecedented, it was still human error, which is not sufficient ground for the match to be replayed.

Ange Postecoglou responds to Jurgen Klopp quotes

When asked about Klopp’s statement, the Spurs head coach told Football.London: “I think Jurgen’s said that maybe that was taken a little bit out of context.

“My view is when you’re talking about a replay, there’s got to be some sort of threshold and I don’t think a mistake is a threshold for that, irrespective of the consequences.

“If we stray into integrity or misappropriation of the law, then you maybe have a case to say ‘well, you know what, there’s something there’. But, ultimately, when you strip it all back it was a mistake, that’s what it was.

“It was a unique mistake, people have used ‘an unprecedented mistake’ and I agree with that, but it was still a mistake. So if your threshold for replays is mistakes by individuals, that’s 365 games a year, I reckon.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The VAR system is still relatively new in the game and these types of occasional mistakes (it was the first time that this type of miscommunication has occurred) will help fine-tune the system. The communication protocols will certainly improve on the back of this.

Gary Neville has come down hard on Jurgen Klopp after the Liverpool boss called for Liverpool’s clash against Tottenham to be replayed.

At the start of the week, it is fair to say that Liverpool had the sympathy of many neutrals, given the unprecedented nature of the miscommunication between the VAR and the on-field referee, which meant that the decision to rule Luis Diaz offside was not corrected.

However, any goodwill that the Reds had has now disappeared after Klopp quite outrageously claimed on Wednesday that replaying the game would be the only fair outcome (Guardian).

Gary Neville hits out at Jurgen Klopp for replay claim

Multiple reports have since made it clear that despite Liverpool’s attempts to escalate the issue, the Premier League will not consider replaying the game (Football Insider).

Neville has now criticised Klopp’s statement, suggesting that the Merseyside club have grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory.

The former Manchester United man also labelled Liverpool’s escalating rhetoric about the refereeing mistake as ‘madness’.

Spurs Web Opinion

The way everyone associated with Liverpool (particularly their supporters) are burning with righteous indignation has been quite revealing.

Wrong decisions have been part of football for a long time, and teams do not always get what they deserve. Not being able to accept that and take the rough with the smooth suggests something is fundamentally wrong with one’s relationship with the sport itself.

Jan Vertonghen has joked that he is ready to replay the 2019 Champions League final after Jurgen Klopp suggested that the Tottenham-Liverpool game from Saturday should be replayed after the VAR error.

On Wednesday, Klopp shocked many people by suggesting that a replay would be the fair outcome after the miscommunication between VAR and the on-field referee led to the Luiz Diaz offside call not being overruled (Guardian).

It has since been reported that despite Liverpool’s attempts to escalate the issue, the Premier League will not consider replaying the fixture (Football Insider).

When Tottenham were asked about Klopp’s statement, the North London club declined to comment (Sky Sports Football Daily).

Reacting to the Liverpool boss’ statement, some Spurs fans  have questioned if the Champions League final of 2019 should also be replayed, given the harsh handball decision against Moussa Sissoko at the start of the game.

Vertonghen has now jumped on social media to say that he is ready for a replay at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Spurs Web Opinion

Expect Liverpool supporters, who are obviously going to be tribal and back their own, I have not seen a single fan or journalist defend Klopp’s statement. There seems to be a universal acknowledgement that what the German said was completely graceless and idiotic.

Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett has said that Jurgen Klopp wants to move on from the VAR controversy against Tottenham, revealing that the Liverpool boss believes the injustice could galvanise his side.

Earlier this week, the PMGOL released the audio of the incident, which showed that a basic miscommunication between VAR and the on-field referee led to Luis Diaz’s offside not being overturned (Sky Sports).

Just when it seemed like the controversy was set to die down a bit, Klopp poured more fuel into the fire on Wednesday by stating that he believes that replaying the game would be the fair outcome (Guardian).

However, multiple outlets have since explained that the Premier League will not entertain the possibility of replaying the game despite Liverpool’s attempts to escalate the issue (Football Insider).

Is Jurgen Klopp playing games at Liverpool?

Dorsett has now revealed that he spoke to Klopp after the press conference and that the Liverpool boss insisted that the incident will help motivate his side.

The journalist said on Sky Sports Football Daily: “From Jurgen Klopp’s perspective, he wants to try and move on. Of course, he does.

“He’s got a match in the Europa League tomorrow to prepare for, against Royale Union San-Gilloise, and he’s trying to prepare his players for that.

“He told me outside of this news conference room that he thinks this could galvanise his squad and bring them together.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Klopp clearly knew that a replay was not on the cards and his statement was aimed at putting pressure on the PMGOL and officials. For someone in his position to mention that in his press conference was extremely poor conduct.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed he believes the recent fixture between the Reds and Tottenham Hotspur should be replayed in light of the egregious officiating error in the game.

Tottenham secured a big win over Liverpool last weekend, but the result has been called into question due to a massive mistake from the VAR officials which saw a Luis Diaz goal incorrectly ruled out for offside.

Despite being down to ten men, Liverpool looked to have taken the lead when Mohamed Salah played a ball through for Diaz, who applied a fine finish past Guglielmo Vicario.

The PGMOL has since admitted that a serious factual error was made in disallowing the goal (Sky Sports). Audio footage from the VAR room has also been released, which appears to reveal a miscommunication was not corrected and the game was allowed to go on despite the goal not being given.

Spurs eventually won the game thanks to a first-half goal from Heung-min Son and an injury-time Joel Matip own goal via a Pedro Porro cross.

Both Ange Postecoglou and Jurgen Klopp have said very little on the matter after the game, until now.

Jurgen Klopp wants the Spurs game replayed

Klopp has commented on the situation and revealed what he hopes to happen to resolve the issue, but admitted it is unlikely to happen.

He said (via Fabrizio Romano): “I think the only outcome for the Tottenham-Liverpool game should be a replay. It probably won’t happen. I think it is so unprecedented it didn’t happen before.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I honestly cannot see the game being replayed. The decision and subsequent mistake have already been made, and you can argue that even if Diaz had scored, it wouldn’t have led to a Liverpool win.

Would Liverpool have to play with ten men from 25 minutes onwards to replicate the situation in a replay? There are just too many obstacles to making a replay a viable option.

Jurgen Klopp has ruled out the chances of rumoured Tottenham target Caoimhin Kelleher departing the club, insisting that the goalkeeper would only be allowed to leave if Liverpool received ‘an extraordinary offer’.

It now appears as if Hugo Lloris‘ days at Spurs are numbered, with reports over recent weeks indicating that the North London club are expected to sign a new number-one this summer and that the Frenchman does not want to be an understudy (The Athletic).

Liverpool

Kelleher is thought to be one of the goalkeepers on Tottenham‘s radar, with The Irish Independent reporting earlier this month that the Lilywhites are eyeing a move for the Liverpool shot-stopper.

The report revealed that the 24-year-old, who has served as Alisson Becker‘s understudy over the past few years, is also on the radars of Brighton and Brentford.

However, Klopp has now insisted that Liverpool have no intention of selling the Irishman this summer.

The German told The Daily Mail: “Caoimh Kelleher? What’s happening with Kelleher? He has a contract.

“You want us to say goodbye (to Adrian) just in case? Honestly, I can’t see Caoimh leaving.

“It must be an extraordinary offer for me to start thinking, I have to say.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I can see Kelleher asking to leave Anfield this summer in search of regular first-team football but I do not think the 24-year-old would be at the top of Tottenham’s wishlist to replace Hugo Lloris.

Spurs are likely to pursue a more experienced campaigner like Raya or Onana who are proven at the highest level.

The chasing pack contains Brighton and Hove Albion, who have three games in hand on the Reds and Spurs and have 55 points already on the board. Villa are eighth, with 54 points from 35 matches.

While a resurgent Liverpool are looking to keep pressure on Manchester United and perhaps sneak into the top four, it seems Klopp is not letting his players get complacent.

With the final few games of the season remaining, Klopp has sent his squad a warning regarding the teams behind them and how easily things can change in the league table.

He told Sky Sports: “Imagine if [Newcastle and Manchester United] would slip up. But I don’t think they will.

“Imagine if they would and we wouldn’t be there, then we would really regret that. Apart from that, if Man United wins their two games in hand, then they are seven points away and it’s pretty much done.

“People forget about Brighton, if they win their games in hand when you see them playing, then it’s absolutely possible. They [would be] above us.

“It’s just an interesting period. It’s a bit more exciting than a few teams wanted for us. It’s good that we can get in that region of the table again.”

On the teams below, Klopp added: “We have to make sure we keep the teams behind us, behind us! They are coming as well. Not only Brighton, but Aston Villa and Tottenham.

“They won [against Crystal Palace]. Nothing is decided for us, which is good. We have three games to go.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I think this is more Klopp keeping his team on their toes than actual belief that we can catch them.

Brighton should be the only real threat to Liverpool’s hopes of finishing fifth now.

Speaking after his Liverpool side defeated Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 yesterday, Jurgen Klopp singled out Harry Kane for praise, while also recalling how the star striker should have been sent off in the fixture last season.

In a chaotic game of two halves, Spurs left Anfield empty handed. Liverpool had the advantage at half time after goals from Curtis Jones, Luis Diaz, and Mo Salah gave them an early lead, before Kane pulled one back for the away side.

The second half was far better for Spurs, who battled their way back into the game thanks to goals from Heung-min Son, and an injury time equaliser from Richarlison.

However, Liverpool took all three points at the death after Diogo Jota pounced on a Lucas Moura error.

Controversially, Jota could have been sent off earlier in the game for a high foot on Oliver Skipp.

Not one to shy away from controversy, Klopp discussed the perceived history he feels his side have with referee Paul Tierney in his post-match interview with Sky Sports and brought up an incident involving Harry Kane last season.

He said: “We have our history with Mr. Tierney. I really don’t know what this man has with us. They always say it’s nothing and it’s not true, but it cannot be. I can’t understand it. I’m really not sure if it’s me because of how he looks at me.

“I really have no problem with no people and not him as well. He was ref when we played at Tottenham when Harry Kane didn’t get a red card.”

Klopp used the opportunity to throw Kane a compliment, while maintaining the talismanic striker should have seen red last season: “Harry Kane I love this player, crazy, what a player. I don’t want him to get a red card but it was a red card in that game but it was Mr. Tierney and nobody asked him about it because in England they don’t have to clarify things.”

I remember the incident Klopp is speaking about and it probably should have been a red card that time. But, so should Jota’s yesterday, so it’s swings and roundabouts.

These decisions happen sometimes, but once they are done they are done, and there’s no point dwelling on them.

Liverpool’s Diogo Jota has apologised for a high foot incident which saw Tottenham Hotspur’s Oliver Skipp leave the field with blood on his face in yesterday’s thrilling encounter, but has insisted he did not deserve a red card.

The Premier League clash between Liverpool and Spurs was a fantastic watch for the neutral, and by the final whistle, Liverpool fans will have been happy to take all three points in a 4-3 win at Anfield.

It was Jota who scored the decisive goal in the dying embers of the game, but it could all have been very different however, had Jota seen red earlier in the match.

Stretching for the ball, Jota’s boot met the head of Skipp and the latter was forced off the field with an open wound.

The Portuguese star received a yellow card for the collision, but Spurs boss Ryan Mason claimed it should have been a red (beIN Sport).

Jurgen Klopp feels differently, and deflected from the issue in his own post-match comments to the BBC.

Now, Jota himself has spoken on the matter in a chat with Premier League Productions (31/04/23 from 18:30), where he revealed he apologised to Skipp but is happy with the referee’s call to show him a yellow card only.

He said: “It was not good. Obviously, it’s not my intention to cause any harm to him.

“But unfortunately, it happened. I asked him ‘sorry’, that’s all I could do after that bad tackle but I also think it’s not a red because I touched the ball and there was no intention to cause him any harm.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Whether Jota touched the ball or not, and whether he meant to or not, having your foot that high is dangerous play and should have been a red card in my books.

But, what’s done is done, and at least he has apologised to Skipp.

Heung-min Son then made things very interesting on 77 minutes with a cool finish, before substitute Richarlison seemingly grabbed a point for Spurs in injury time.

It wasn’t to be, however, as Diogo Jota scored just a minute later to seal the win for Liverpool.

Responding to Mason’s suggestion that Jota should have been shown a red card for a high foot on Oliver Skipp, Klopp took the opportunity to criticise the young coach’s approach to the game.

He told BBC Sport: “I understand that. Ryan [Mason] has to worry about other stuff. They’re such a good football team, Tottenham, they have to play better football. They can’t just counter-attack, they have to play better football with that team.

“Diogo Jota has the foot high but he’s not going for the head. I heard Oliver Skipp could’ve had a red card. Did he speak about that as well? Wanting Diogo Jota off the pitch, worry about other stuff.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I don’t know how he does it, but Jurgen Klopp always finds a way to be a sore winner.

The high foot on Skipp was incredibly dangerous from Jota and probably should have been a red card.

It wasn’t given, and Jota scored the winner, so I can totally understand Mason’s frustration.

Paul Merson has claimed that Liverpool now have a similar problem to the one Tottenham faced under Mauricio Pochettino, with the Reds being unable to make signings who would improve their starting eleven.

A lot has been written and said about Pochettino not being backed by the Tottenham hierarchy at the right time, with many putting the sour ending to the project down to the lack of investment in the first-team squad.

Spurs were in a transitionary phase during that time as the new stadium was being built and the club did invest significantly ahead of their first full season at the 62,850 venue, snapping up Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Jack Clarke and Ryan Sessegnon in the summer of 2019.

Unfortunately, Pochettino was sacked just a few months later and replaced by Jose Mourinho – an experiment which had disastrous results.

Jurgen Klopp, who is the current longest-serving manager in the Premier League, also seemingly finds himself at a crossroads at the moment, with Liverpool looking a shadow of their usual selves in the first half of this season.

The Reds have made the first big move ahead of the January transfer window, snapping up Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven but Merson believes they will struggle to get into the top four this season.

The former Arsenal midfielder told  Soccer Special on Sky Sports (26/12/22) about Liverpool: “It’s hard going into the market, you aren’t going to win the Premier League this season and you need to stay in the Champions League, that’s where the money is.

“It’s so hard. Arsenal have the same thing. You sort of get into that Tottenham situation, of Tottenham four years ago when they were right at the top of their game and they didn’t buy anybody because their first XI was unbelievable and you thought ‘how could I go out and buy him because he’s not going to get a game.’

“I think they need to go out and buy. I don’t think they are a shoo-in for the top-four with this team, at the moment, and with the injuries.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Levy deserves criticism for not backing Pochettino at the end of the 2016-17 season as we were pretty close to doing something special with that team.

However, we are not privy to internal conversations and it is quite possible that the Spurs chairman had made it clear to the Argentine that there would not be much in the way of funds available at the time due to the stadium transition.

What most people ignore is the fact that the club backed Pochettino massively with the signings he asked for in the summer of 2019 and even agreed on a big-money deal for Dybala late in the window only for it to collapse due to image rights issues.

That transfer window was a disaster for the club as Pochettino’s targets (Ndombele and Lo Celso) failed miserably and there is no reason to think Dybala would have also not been a disaster, given his subsequent career trajectory.

Tottenham Hotspur may have been defeated by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool yesterday evening, but the Reds boss had nice things to say about both Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski.

Spurs went into the game in good form, having come off the back of two dramatic wins against Bournemouth in the Premier League and Marseille in the Champions League.

Liverpool meanwhile, had not won an away game in the league all season and were struggling for form after defeats against Nottingham Forest and Leeds United in recent weeks.

As much as the odds appeared to be stacked in the favour of a home win for Tottenham, injury concerns left the Lilywhites with plenty of changes to make to their starting line-up.

With Heung-min Son and Richarlison still out, and Dejan Kulusevski only returning to the bench, it was up to Ivan Perisic to lead the line alongside Harry Kane.

Spurs succumbed to a 2-1 defeat, with the battle lost in the first half thanks to two Mohamed Salah goals. Antonio Conte’s men did pull one goal back in the second half as Kulusevski came on and provided an instant assist for Harry Kane.

Speaking to Premier League Productions (06/11/22 at 7:00 pm), Klopp was full of praise for the attacking duo. He said: “I’m fine (with Tottenham coming back). For me, it’s important to judge the body language of the players. I really thought they were outstanding, at this moment.”

“Okay, it’s a big blow and an unnecessary goal. It was a great pass and Kulusevski comes on, then here we go. It’s difficult to defend.

“Harry scored it?! Harry is outstanding in these moments, so that’s really tricky. But you have to defend. You have to defend half-spaces and the wings. That was a bit of a problem.”

Spurs Web Opinion

A disappointing result was made a little less frustrating by the return of Dejan Kulusevski, and he very quickly reminded us all what we have been missing. Hopefully, he and Harry Kane can recapture their link-up play and add more bite to the Spurs attack than we’ve seen in recent weeks.

Spurs pulled one back through Harry Kane in the 70th minute but could not find an equaliser, with the Reds having their backs against the wall through the entirety of the second period.

Klopp had been quite critical of the Spurs’ defensive approach after both of Liverpool’s matches against the North Londoners last season.

After the 2-2 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in December, the Liverpool boss accused Spurs of just kicking the ball long and having their forwards run after it (Liverpool’s official website), while he insisted after the 1-1 draw at Anfield in May that he didn’t like Lilywhites’ defensive tactics (Eurosport).

However, it was his side who defended with men behind the ball on Sunday, and that fact was not lost on Conte.

When asked in his post-match press conference if his side should have at least taken a point from the game, the Spurs boss told Football.London: “Before I answer the question, Jurgen was happy with the way that we played tonight? Yeah? It was important to know his opinion.

“Jurgen is a really good coach but at the end tonight we are talking about a defeat and I’m happy with the game that we played at Anfield. The final result was 1-1 and it was better.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Klopp looked like a complete hypocrite, given the way Liverpool approached the game in the second half. I have no problem with the Reds adopting a defensive approach but the German coach made it clear last season that he will never coach his side to play in that manner. I wonder what changed?

Antonio Conte has said that it is possible for managers to stick around at one club for as long as Jurgen Klopp has at Liverpool, but only if everyone at the club has the same ambition and vision.

So far in his coaching career, Conte has only tended to stay with clubs for two or three years spells at a time, including Chelsea and Inter Milan.

However, the Italian has hinted during his year in North London that he might be open to a long-term project, even previously using Klopp’s success at Liverpool as an example of what can be achieved if a manager is given time (Football.London).

Ahead of his side’s showdown with the Reds this Sunday, Conte was asked about Klopp’s seven years at Liverpool and he explained that the German has been able to stay at Anfield for so long because he is on the same page as the Merseyside club’s hierarchy.

Conte told Football.London: “The length of time and the period you stay in one club it depends on many, many situations not only one or two. Jurgen found a fantastic place to work and to improve his team.

“Liverpool in this period invested a lot of money and for this reason, the club promised him to invest and improve the team. The club’s ambition was really high at Liverpool.

“I think so because then I have seen the way they improved, the money they spent in the transfer market and for this reason, he is working there for seven years. It was like this for Klopp and the same for Pep Guardiola.

“It depends on many situations. If there is a good link and the ambitions are the same, it is easier to stay for a long time in the same club.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Conte’s message seems to be clear – He is willing to commit to a long-term project at Tottenham only if the club completely back his vision and are willing to consistently invest money into the squad to make it stronger.

I do believe that the Spurs hierarchy will continue to back the Italian as they know that they have a world-class manager in their hands and cannot afford to let him walk away.

Antonio Conte has claimed that Jurgen Klopp made disparaging comments about Tottenham’s style of play last season due to his own frustration.

Spurs and Liverpool played out two draws last season, the second of which came at Anfield back in May. Tottenham took the lead through Son Heung-min on 56 minutes in that encounter before Luis Diaz’s deflected strike in the 74th minute nestled into the far corner past Hugo Lloris.

Spurs had a couple of guilt-edged chances to win it in the end, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg failing to get the desired connection on a header after he found himself unmarked in the Liverpool box in stoppage time.

After the game, Klopp was critical of the fact that the Lilywhites defended so deep despite having some ‘world-class players’ at their disposal, and insisted that he would never set his team to play in that way (BeanymanSports).

Conte has now remarked that the Liverpool boss made those comments due to his frustration at the result, adding that the two dropped points eventually cost the Reds the Premier League title.

When asked about Klopp’s comments, the Spurs head coach told Football.London: “Yeah, but if you remember he lost the Premier League for this result. I understood his frustration.

“They lost the Premier League because of that result. They lost the Premier League for these two points, but you know instead we reached the Champions League with that draw.

“It’s okay, every coach has to speak for his team. For every coach, it’s important to understand the best strategy to reach a good result. Honestly, I have seen again the last game we played against Liverpool and if there was a team that deserved to win it was Tottenham, not Liverpool.

“But I understand after the game when you felt you lost the Premier League to say something wrong against another team, but he has said sorry because he understood. No problem for me. When you are angry it’s very difficult sometimes to control your emotion.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Klopp made similarly disparaging comments about Tottenham’s style of play after the 2-2 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in December. The irony of the Liverpool boss’ comments is that we created better chances than the Reds in both matches last season, and should have arguably taken six points rather than just two.

Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp, has highlighted Tottenham Hotspur’s main strengths ahead of the Premier League clash between the two sides on Sunday.

Spurs are enjoying a great start to the season and, despite a couple of worrying defeats to Manchester United and Newcastle United recently, back-to-back wins against Bournemouth in the league and Marseille in the Champions League have put the Lilywhites back on track.

Liverpool

For Liverpool however, it’s been a disastrous start to the campaign and Klopp’s side look a shadow of their former self. Defeats to Leeds United and Nottingham Forest in recent weeks have left Liverpool way off the pace in 9th place in the table after 12 games.

It’s still early days of course, but a positive result for either side on Sunday afternoon would be a huge boost. Spurs will be looking to consolidate their place in the top four, while Liverpool will hope to climb the table as quickly as possible.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo ahead of the clash, Klopp highlighted the areas of Tottenham’s game that have impressed him this season.

He said: “It’s a massive game for us (Sunday). I didn’t count the points difference between us but we cannot be picky where we get points but it’s difficult. They are well-organised in defending. Counter-attack is a massive thing. You saw their offensive power.

“They have scored goals in the last minutes lately, so we are prepared for a confident, strong opponent. What I can say, I never once thought before going to Tottenham ‘now is a good time to face Tottenham’.

“It will be a tough one but that’s what we all want. It’s like a Champions League game in the Premier League and that’s how we’ll approach it.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Liverpool have been shocking this season, but you have to imagine it’s only a matter of time before they turn it around. It would be typical of Spurs, who are flying of late, to be the team to come unstuck and help Liverpool gain some momentum. Let’s hope I’m wrong, but we’ve seen this happen so many times in the past.

Klopp has now confirmed that the concussion protocols dictate the midfielder cannot play against the Lilywhites on Sunday.

The Liverpool boss told Sky Sports Football Daily: “When you go through concussion protocol, you are not available for the game.

“He’s fine, but that’s how it is and rightly so. You have to go through different stages and that means he is available for non-contact training on Monday and full-contact training on Tuesday – if it goes well.”

Arthur remains sidelined for Liverpool while Joel Matip and Naby Keita are also doubts for the game against Spurs (ThisisAnfield).

Tottenham have several injury concerns of their own, with Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski sidelined over the last few weeks. Although Fabrizio Romano claims Kulusevski is expected to return to the squad on Sunday.

Cristian Romero is expected to be out of action for another ten days as he continues to recover from his hamstring problem (Gaston Edul) while Son Heung-min is also ruled out after sustaining a fracture around his left eye socket following a head collision with Marseille defender Chancel Mbemba on Tuesday.

Spurs Web Opinion

Despite the injuries to Milner, and potentially Joel Matip, Liverpool will still be able to name something close to their first-choice eleven on Sunday, which will obviously not be the case with Spurs. So, we will have our work cut out to get a decent result, particularly given our lack of firepower upfront at the moment.

The Reds will be looking to get their season back on track when they visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, having suffered another major setback on Saturday, with Leeds emerging 2-1 winners from Anfield.

A win for the Lilywhites will see them build a 13-point gap with Liverpool, thus putting the Merseysiders’ hopes of finishing in the top four in major jeopardy.

Speaking before the Napoli game, Klopp remarked that he cannot try to overhaul his starting lineup at this stage of the season and insisted that his side have to try their best to come through the next two fixtures.

The Liverpool boss said in his post-match press conference following his side’s loss to Leeds (BeanymanSports): “The situation is like this, there is no excuse for it or whatever. But we have the problem from the first day with injuries or half-fit players that aren’t injured.

“That’s what we carry with us, at the moment. That’s why some players play too often and other players have to play too early. That’s the situation.

“The next game is already waiting. You might say, Naples, we are already through in the group, it’s a home game, Liverpool against Napoli and we should put in a proper performance, I would say.

“But we need 11 starters, then a few days later, we play away at Tottenham, so that’s our situation. It’s not now for a main overhaul or time for all these kinds of things. No, you have to fight through and you have to fight for momentum, confidence and security.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Despite being defeated on Saturday, Liverpool actually played well in parts and created quite a few chances. They have also shown this season that they can raise their game when they play top sides. So, just because their form has been indifferent this season, does not mean that it will be an easy game for Spurs.

The Athletic have revealed that Liverpool’s coaching staff were left stunned by Fraser Forster’s improvement with the ball at his feet during their clash at St Mary’s last year.

The report discusses Southampton’s various trials and tribulations on the goalkeeping front over recent seasons and Ralph Hasenhuttl’s desire to have a number one who can play out from the back.

It is explained that Forster was open-minded about learning to do so and ‘got to grips with the modern aspects of the game’ during his final few years at St Mary’s.

The report states that during the Saints’ 1-0 win over Liverpool last year, some of Jurgen Klopp’s backroom staff were ‘taken aback’ by Forster’s improvements, particularly his ability to sweep and play out under pressure.

It is revealed that some at Southampton suggested that the 34-year-old adapting his game was part of the reason why a club like Tottenham signed him this summer.

Forster’s improvement with the ball at his feet has also been attributed to the goalkeeper receiving an England recall earlier this year for the first time since 2017.

Spurs Web Opinion

One cannot overestimate how important it has now become for goalkeepers to be relatively competent with the ball at their feet, and that is one area of Forester’s game that Spurs would have studied before signing him in the summer.

If Nick Pope was better with the ball at his feet, I believe he would have been of interest to almost every club in Europe this summer, given that he is an unbelievable shot-stopper, and commands his area brilliantly.

However, the fact that none of the big sides wanted him, and that he is still behind the likes of Pickford (and arguably Ramsdale) in the pecking order for England, shows just how important it is for modern-day coaches to have goalkeepers who are comfortable on the ball.
