Fichajes.net have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are having second thoughts about signing Ivan Toney due to Brentford’s high asking price for the striker.

The report backs up what we have heard from other outlets over the last few months by revealing that both Spurs and Arsenal have expressed their interest in signing Toney when his ban lapses in January.

However, it is explained that even though the 27-year-old has become quite an ‘attractive target’ for many top clubs, Brentford are determined not to budge from their stance.

Brentford are asking too much for Ivan Toney

Even though Toney would only have 18 months left to run on his contract in January, it is alleged that the Bees are not even willing to enter the negotiating table unless there is an offer of €70m (£61m).

The publication adds that this price has proven to be ‘prohibitive’ for both Spurs and Arsenal, neither of whom are willing to commit to such a high offer.

Fichajes state that both the North London sides are now seeking ‘negotiation alternatives’ with Brentford to try and reduce the cost of the operation.

Spurs Web Opinion

I wonder if by ‘negotiation alternatives’, they mean that Tottenham and Arsenal are looking to include some of their fringe players as part of the operation.

We know that Brentford can be very tough negotiators, which is why I would be surprised if Spurs get heavily involved in the race for Toney’s signature.

In what comes as a potential boost to Tottenham in their pursuit of Ivan Toney, The Athletic have suggested that Arsenal may not be able to sign the Brentford star in January since they will have to work with a small budget.

We at Spurs Web have relayed several reports over the last few weeks that have claimed Spurs are set for a three-way battle with Arsenal and Chelsea for Toney, who is ready to leave Brentford in January (Daily Express).

The Daily Mirror stated a few weeks ago that the Gunners are confident of persuading the England international to choose them over their London rivals.

However, this was contradicted by journalist Dean Jones, who told TEAMtalk a few days ago that Arsenal are yet to make a final decision on whether to move for Toney since they also need to strengthen in other areas of the pitch.

Limited budget for Arsenal could hurt Toney pursuit

The Athletic have now suggested that Mikel Arteta’s men will only have a limited budget to work with in January.

This is because they are concerned about breaching Financial Fair Play, which is why the Emirates hierarchy opted to sign David Raya on an initial loan deal in the summer.

The publication asserts that there ‘isn’t much budget or desire to do significant business in January’ at Arsenal and adds that things are unlikely to change unless there are significant departures.

Spurs Web Opinion

With Arsenal seemingly not having the budget for a move for Toney and Chelsea having a policy of signing players under 25, it is possible that Spurs could have a relatively free run at the Brentford star if they are interested.

However, I doubt if the North London club would consider paying anything more than £60m for the England international’s services, which might not be enough to persuade the Bees to sell.

Dean Jones has revealed his sources have claimed that Arsenal are yet to make a final decision on whether or not to pursue rumoured Tottenham target Ivan Toney in January.

Over the past few weeks, multiple outlets have reported that Spurs are set to compete with Arsenal and Chelsea for Toney’s signature when his ban lapses in January.

This includes The Daily Express, who revealed on September 23 that the centre-forward has already expressed his desire to leave Brentford and that the Bees have started looking for potential replacements.

The Daily Mirror reported on September 28 that Mikel Arteta is hopeful of convincing the England international to move to the Emirates over their London rivals.

The report explained that having persuaded Declan Rice to pick them over other Premier League sides in the summer, the Gunners believe that they could also do the same with the Bees star by explaining their big ambitions to the player.

Should Spurs try and beat Arsenal to Ivan Toney?

However, Jones has now suggested that reports of Arsenal readying a move for Toney are premature, insisting that Arteta’s men might not want to spend a huge fee on a striker when they also need reinforcements in other areas of the pitch.

The journalist said (via TEAMtalk): “There continues to be a lot of noise around Ivan Toney potentially joining Arsenal but my understanding of the situation is that there has not even been a decision yet on Arsenal signing a striker, so to expect them to sign one at around £80m really is a stretch.

“It seems pretty clear that Toney is up for that move, he’s talking about them in a very positive way and I don’t blame him for wanting to join a club like that.

“But it’s a lot of money and Arsenal are also having to weigh up if they might need some sort of backup to Bukayo Saka in the second half of the season so this is a very layered situation.

“And that’s before we even consider that spending big on Toney in January would seriously impact on their spending next summer.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Irrespective of whether Arsenal are ready to pay £80m for Toney, I simply cannot see Spurs being willing to commit such a big amount on a single player as that is not the club’s business model.

I expect the Lilywhites to focus on signing a centre-back and a midfielder in January, and to address the striker issue next summer.

Football Insider claim Brentford have identified Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy as a transfer target amidst fears that the likes of Tottenham would make a move for Ivan Toney in January.

Toney has a little over 18 months left on his contract and the report backs up what we have heard from other sources recently by stating that the Bees believe he could leave the club in January.

Football Insider name Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal as the clubs eyeing a move for the England international. They add that the Bees are already looking for a replacement and have zeroed in on Guirassy.

Should Spurs move for Ivan Toney in January?

The outlet asserts that Brentford are not the only ones interested in the prolific Stuttgart star, with Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and West Ham United also thought to be keeping tabs on the 27-year-old.

Interestingly, this update affects Spurs in more ways than one as TEAMtalk claimed earlier this month that the Stuttgart star is also on Tottenham’s radar ahead of the January transfer window.

Guirassy has scored 14 goals and provided two assists in eight matches across all competitions so far this season (Transfermarkt).

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham are much more likely to move for Guirassy than Toney in January as I cannot see Spurs shattering their transfer record to sign the Brentford star.

However, my suspicion is that the North London club will put off their pursuit of a number nine until next summer, and focus on signing a centre-back and a centre midfielder in January.

TEAMtalk have now suggested that Arsenal could decide against making a move for rumoured Tottenham target Ivan Toney if Brentford demand a massive fee for the striker.

The Daily Mirror reported last week that Mikel Arteta is hopeful of convincing the England international to move to the Emirates over their London rivals.

Toney asking price could be too high for Arsenal

However, TEAMtalk have now suggested that the Gunners’ pursuit of Toney could hinge on Brentford’s valuation of the player.

It is explained that while there was initial feeling that the West London club would consider bids close to £50m for the 27-year-old, some sources now believe that they could demand upwards of £80m.

The report adds that if Thomas Frank’s men do request such a fee, it is unclear if Arsenal would continue talks or shift their attention to other options.

Spurs Web Opinion

I would be extremely surprised if Tottenham consider paying anywhere near £80m for Toney, particularly given that additions at centre-back and central midfield are more urgent requirements in January.

While Chelsea might be willing to meet Brentford’s valuation, it remains to be seen if the 27-year-old would want to move to Stamford Bridge, given the predicament the Blues are in at the moment.

Football Insider have claimed that Brentford could demand close to £100m for Tottenham target, Ivan Toney in January.

Over the last couple of weeks, multiple publications, including The Daily Express, have reported that Tottenham are one of the clubs eyeing a move for Toney in January once the striker’s ban lapses.

The outlet suggested that the Lilywhites are battling Chelsea and Arsenal for the 27-year-old’s signature, with the centre-forward alleged to have informed Brentford of his desire to seek a new challenge.

However, The Evening Standard reported on September 26 that Spurs are unlikely to get involved in a bidding war for the striker’s services, with Ange Postecoglou expected to prioritise other positions in January.

Brrentford’s asking price for Toney is near £100m

Football Insider have now backed up what other outlets have reported about Toney’s desire to leave the Gtech Community Stadium.

They state that the England international is set to become ‘one of the hottest properties’ across the Premier League when his ban is lifted.

It is alleged that even though the striker only has a little over 18 months left to run on his contract, the Bees value him at almost £100m.

Spurs Web Opinion

We know that Brentford are not easy to negotiate with and they will likely demand a huge fee for Toney as he essentially guarantees 20-plus goals in the Premier League, which only a handful of other strikers in world football do.

There is no chance that Spurs would shatter their transfer record for the 27-year-old in January, particularly given that they are in much more desperate need of reinforcements in central defence and midfield.

Louis Saha has said that Richarlison and Son Heung-min do not look like they can play together and urged Tottenham to snap up Ivan Toney in January.

Richarlison started the season as the number nine but the Brazilian failed to find the back of the net in the first few games of the campaign.

That led to Ange Postecoglou moving Son to a central role and the decision has paid off so far, with the Spurs captain scoring six times in the four matches that he has played centrally.

Richarlison has also impressed over recent weeks, with two goals and an assist to his name in the last three league games.

Curiously, Postecoglou decided to start the 26-year-old on the left and play the South Korean through the middle against Liverpool, and the pair combined well for Tottenham’s opener.

Meanwhile, reports over the last few weeks have suggested that Spurs could battle it out with Arsenal and Chelsea for Toney’s signature in the January transfer window (Daily Express).

Could Ivan Toney solve Tottenham’s problems?

Saha believes that the Brentford star has all the attributes to be successful at a club like Tottenham.

When asked about Spurs’ rumoured interest in Toney, the Frenchman told Betfred: “Ivan can adapt to any team. He’s mentally very strong, so I’m confident that he will make the right decision for himself.

“He can play in any team because of how strong and technically gifted he is. Ivan’s also very mobile and has the right formula you need to play as a striker for any club.

“Manchester United certainly need more options up front as all the top clubs have various options to choose from. Tottenham also definitely need another striker because the combination between Son Heung-min and Richarlison isn’t working too well at present, so that’s another possible move for Ivan.

“All we know is that a lot of teams will be interested in signing him in January and I’m sure he would be a key player at a big club rather than just being another member of the squad.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I am certain that Tottenham will not compete for Toney’s signature in January. Postecoglou appears happy with Son and Richarlison as his options upfront for the time being, which is why I do not expect Spurs to enter the market for a centre-forward until next summer.

Clinton Morrison believes that Ivan Toney would fit in well in the current set-up at Tottenham Hotspur.

There has been a lot said and written about Toney’s future over the last few weeks, with several clubs thought to be eyeing a move for the striker in January when his ban lapses.

The Daily Express is one of several outlets that have reported over the last few weeks that the 27-year-old could be the subject of a three-way tussle between Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea in January.

The publication added that the striker has informed Thomas Frank that he wants to seek a new challenge and Brentford are already looking for a potential replacement.

A few days ago, The Daily Mirror suggested that Mikel Arteta is hopeful of convincing Toney to snub the likes of Spurs in favour of a switch to the Emirates.

Would Ivan Toney be a good fit for Tottenham?

Morrison believes that the England international would thrive at Tottenham as well as at their North London rivals.

The former Crystal Palace striker told The Sunday Mirror about the Brentford star: “I think he’s a good fit for someone like Tottenham or maybe even Arsenal.

“He would go there and lead the line because I think he’s the real deal. Not only does he score goals and link the play but he’s good in this own box as well defending corners.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Toney is one of those signings who is guaranteed to succeed, which is why is likely to cost a premium.

I do not expect Tottenham to get involved in the bidding war for the 27-year-old as the club have evidently decided to change their transfer strategy since Postecoglou arrived, with the Lilywhites now preferring younger, up-and-coming players.

Arteta hopes to convince Toney to join Arsenal

The Mirror have now claimed that Arsenal are ready to make Toney their number-one target in January and are hopeful that they can beat their rivals to the player’s signature.

It is explained that Arteta convinced Declan Rice to snub other big clubs in favour of a switch to the Emirates in the summer and hopes to do the same with the Brentford star.

The report adds that the Gunners believe that their ambition and vision will prove key in convincing Toney to make the move.

Spurs Web Opinion

We know how much of skilled communicator Postecoglou is and he would fancy his chances of convincing Toney to make the move to Spurs if we were interested in him.

However, I do not expect the Lilywhites to get involved in the bidding war for the 27-year-old in January.

Gabby Agbonlahor has said that he expects Chelsea to beat the likes of Tottenham and Arsenal to the signing of Ivan Toney in January.

Multiple outlets over the last couple of weeks have reported that Tottenham are set to battle Chelsea and Arsenal for Toney’s signature during the January transfer window once the striker’s ban lapses (Mirror).

The Daily Express even suggested at the start of the week that the 27-year-old had already informed Brentford of his desire to leave and that the Bees have begun to look for replacements.

However, The Evening Standard claimed a couple of days ago that Spurs are not expected to vie for Toney’s signature in January and are instead set to prioritise additions in other areas such as central defence.

The report further added that the Bees are expected to demand £80m for the England international’s services even though he would only have 18 months left on his contract in January.

Will Chelsea win the race for Ivan Toney?

Agbonlahor has opined that the Blues will blow Spurs and the Gunners out of the water financially in the race for Toney’s signature.

The former Aston Villa striker told talkSPORT (26/09/23 at 6:30 am) about the Brentford star’s future: “Arsenal had to get Raya on loan because of FFP, so they can’t afford him. Everyone is talking about Arsenal, so they have to sell someone to get him.

“We have seen what Chelsea offers with their financial packages. Spurs won’t be able to match Chelsea, so I see him going to Chelsea (to sign Ivan Toney).”

Spurs Web Opinion

Just like Arsenal, Chelsea also have some FFP concerns and might need to sell some players if they decide to push ahead with a move for Toney. Tottenham could potentially benefit by landing Conor Gallagher in January if the Blues decide to listen to offers for the 23-year-old.

Simon Jordan believes that Ivan Toney is the type of signing that Tottenham need to make during the January transfer window.

Tottenham did not sign an out-and-out number nine to replace Harry Kane in the summer following the England captain’s move to Bayern Munich.

However, that has not cost Ange Postecoglou’s men so far this season as they have been scoring goals for fun.

Son Heung-min has scored six goals in the four matches that he has played as a central striker while Ricarhlison, despite a difficult start to the season, came off the bench to get a goal and an assist against Sheffield United two weeks ago and assisted again yesterday against Liverpool.

Reports over the last couple of weeks have suggested that Spurs are one of the clubs eyeing a move for Toney in January after his ban lapses (The Daily Express).

Would Ivan Toney do well at Tottenham?

The Lilywhties are alleged to be battling London rivals, Arsenal and Chelsea for the 27-year-old’s signature, and Jordon believes that the Brentford star would be a good fit for Postecoglou’s men.

The former Crystal Palace owner told talkSPORT: “If you have changed your agent to be able to achieve an outcome. In my opinion, based upon my experience, the bottom line is he’s changed agents to anticipate a move. There is an expectation of a move. He’s going to move.

“He is going, and the reason is that it’s very rare you see a top-class centre-forward become available in the January transfer window. So there’s a rarity to that little beast.

“I quite like him for Tottenham. He would be a signing for Tottenham but it begs a question what would happen for Richarlison in that respect.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I would be surprised if Tottenham get involved in a bidding war for Toney in January. A Centre-back and central midfielder are much bigger priorities for the club to address, particularly since Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg looks likely to depart.

The Evening Standard have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are not likely to push ahead with a move for Ivan Toney in the January transfer window.

Tottenham lost the services of the focal point of their attack earlier in the summer when Harry Kane decided to swap North London for Bayern Munich.

Spurs not expected to move for Ivan Toney

The Evening Standard have now stated that while Arsenal and Chelsea are indeed plotting moves for the Brentford star, they are not likely to face any challenge from Tottenham.

It is explained that Ange Postecologou is expected to prioritise additions in other areas, most notably at the centre-half position, with the Australian having Son Heung-min and Richarlison as options to lead the line.

The outlet suggests that the Bees are set to demand a whopping £80m for Toney despite the fact he will have just 18 months left to run on his deal by the time January comes around.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham’s recruitment strategy has evidently shifted since Postecoglou arrived through the door, with the club now looking at young, up-and-coming players rather than established stars.  So, I expect Spurs to move for a player such as Gift Orban or Jonathan David rather than breaking their transfer record to sign Toney.

Tim Sherwood is sceptical about whether Daniel Levy would sanction a move for Ivan Toney in January.

It has been reported widely over the past couple of weeks that Toney is expected to be on the move in January when his ban lapses, with Tottenham named as one of the clubs at the front of the queue for his signature.

This includes an update by The Mirror on September 19, which suggested that Spurs are battling London rivals, Arsenal and Chelsea for the 27-year-old’s services.

The report claimed that Brentford would demand £60m for the striker even though he will only have 18 months left on his deal and that Arsenal are particularly keen on the player, having already explored a deal for him in the summer.

A few days ago, The Daily Express revealed Toney has already informed Thomas Frank that he wants a new challenge in January.

The publication asserted that the Bees were ready to listen to offers for the centre-forward and had already started looking for potential replacements.

Tottenham are unlikely to spend big on Ivan Toney

However, Sherwood believes that Spurs are unlikely to spend big on a player who will turn 28 in a few months.

The former Tottenham interim head coach told Sky Sports News (1:26 pm, September 23, 2023): “I am not sure Tottenham would [move for Toney], based on his age. I am not sure Daniel Levy would pay £50 million+ for a player of his age.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Since Postecoglou came through the door, there has been a definite change in transfer strategy, with the club now looking towards younger talents.

However, they also showed with their acquisition of Maddison in the summer that they are prepared to move for readymade, Premier League-proven stars if the right opportunities open up.

The Daily Mirror have revealed that Arsenal are now stepping up their pursuit of rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target, Ivan Toney.

Plenty of reports over the last few weeks have backed Spurs to explore a move for Toney in January when the striker’s ban for breaching the FA’s betting rule runs out.

The latest such report came from The Daily Express last week, with the publication naming Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea as the three clubs at the front of the queue for the 27-year-old’s signature.

It was revealed in the report that Toney had informed Brentford of his desire to leave the club and that the Bees had already started the process of looking for a replacement.

Arsenal step up interest in Brentford’s Ivan Toney

The Mirror have now claimed that Arsenal are making some advances towards the England international ahead of the January transfer window.

The report claims that Toney has made it clear to Brentford that he will not be signing a new deal, with the West London club said to value him at £60m.

It is alleged that Mikel Arteta is keen to add a proven goalscorer to his attack and wants someone with a physical presence upfront.

The publication asserts that the Gunners see Toney as a good fit and would have made a move for him in the summer if not for his ban.

Spurs Web Opinion

I expect both Arsenal and Chelsea to make a move for Toney in January as both clubs are in need of a 20-goal striker. I do not see Spurs getting involved in a bidding war for the Brentford star as I expect the club to go for a younger option such as Jonathan David or Gift Orban.

The Daily Express have revealed that Ivan Toney has now informed Brentford he wants to leave the club during the January transfer window.

Last week, we relayed a report from The Mirror which claimed that Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea are eyeing moves for Toney in January as soon as his ban lapses.

The report claimed that Brentford would demand £60m for the striker even though he will only have 18 months left on his deal, with the outlet adding that the Bees would be happy to keep him at the club until the summer if that valuation is not met.

Toney has explained his desire to leave Brentford

The Express have now said that Toney, who returned to training last week, has now informed Brentford that he wants a new challenge.

The 27-year-old allegedly held a meeting with Thomas Frank to inform him of his decision.

The publication also names the aforementioned three London clubs as the ones leading the race for Toney’s signature, with Brentford already said to have started looking for potential replacements in anticipation of the England international’s exit.

Spurs Web Opinion

I expect Chelsea to win the race for Toney’s signature as they are desperately in need of a centre-forward and a goalscorer, much more so than either Spurs or Arsenal.

I do not think singing an out-and-out number nine would be Posteocoglou’s priority in January as he seems to be happy with a fluid frontline.

Les Ferdinand has said that Ivan Toney would be the ideal option to replace Harry Kane at Tottenham and suggested that the Lilywhites could have made a move for the Brentford star in the summer despite his ban.

Toney’s career has stalled as a result of his ban for breaching the FA’s betting rules, which means that he cannot kick a ball competitively until January.

However, despite being out of the game for several months, the striker’s stock has not gone down.

In fact, The Daily Mirror suggested a few days ago that the 27-year-old could be one of the most hotly contested transfers of the January transfer window, with Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea said to be eyeing moves for him.

The publication alleged that Brentford will demand a minimum of £60m for the striker despite the fact that he will only have 18 months left on his contract in January.

Should Tottenham move for Ivan Toney?

Alan Brazil questioned if it would have been wiser for Tottenham to pursue Toney in the summer rather than wait until January.

He told Ferdinand (via talkSPORT 20/09/23): “Do you know what I was saying earlier Les? And I don’t know if you agree. Ivan Toney – I think people should have bought him before the window slammed shut and just let him train and you might get him cheaper than what he’s going to cost now.

“And Tottenham were one of the clubs I thought ‘Get him’. Do you think he would have been a big addition to Tottenham? Because he’s a top player, isn’t he.”

The former Tottenham striker responded: “Yeah, I think when Harry was going I felt that someone like Toney would be ideal for them. Okay, he’s not Harry Kane but his presence and what he’s doing in the Premier League.

“And as you said, the price they would have probably got him for… Mind you, Harry’s gone for £100m, Brentford probably would have wanted £100m to let him go [he laughed].

“So, I’m not sure Tottenham would have wanted to spend that kind of money but I get what you’re saying. I like him as a centre-forward and I think he would be a very good addition to the Tottenham team.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It would have made no sense for any club to pursue Toney in the summer as he would cost more due to having longer left on his contract despite not being able to play until January.

So, it is not surprising that all interested clubs have decided to wait until his ban has lapsed, particularly since it was quite clear that the striker is not going to sign a new deal with the Bees.

Gabby Agbonlahor has said that Tottenham Hotspur have to pull out all the stops to sign Ivan Toney in January if they want to finish in the top four this season.

Toney, whose ban for breaching FA’s betting rules runs out in January, looks set to be one of the most hotly contested players in the next transfer window.

Earlier this week, The Daily Mirror reported that the 27-year-old could be the subject of a three-way battle between Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal, who are all monitoring the striker’s situation.

The report explained that the Gunners are particularly keen on the Brentford star and would have made an offer for him in the summer if not for his ban.

The outlet also added that Brentford would demand at least £60m for Toney even though he will only have 18 months left on his deal in January.

Tottenham Hotspur need Ivan Toney

Agbonlahor believes it could prove a grave mistake if Spurs do not pursue the Bees star as Ange Postecoglou’s men are in need of a top-quality centre-forward.

The pundit told Football Insider: “If I’m Spurs, I’m wanting this done now. They should get it all done, agreed today – and then he comes in on 1 January and plays towards the end of the month.

“Spurs need an out-and-out striker. Johnson and Richarlison aren’t the answer, they are players who can fill in on the left and right. Toney is an outstanding player, and imagine the service he’d get – especially from Maddison.

“They’ve got to make sure this happens because look out there – who else is available? It could be what costs them top four in the end, not having a top striker.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham’s decision on whether to pursue Toney will depend on a number of factors, including Richarlison’s form and whether Son continues to thrive in the number nine role. However, I cannot help but think that it would be a big mistake for Spurs to allow Arsenal to land Toney uncontested.

The Daily Mirror have claimed that the auction for Ivan Toney has ‘effectively begun’, with Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal among the clubs interested in the Brentford star.

Toney’s ban for breaching the FA’s betting rules runs out in January but the striker has already returned to training at Brentford.

The Mirror claim that the centre-forward, who recently signed with CAA Base, has no shortage of suitors from London, with Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea said to be keeping an eye on his situation.

It is alleged that even though Toney would only have 18 months left on his contract in January, Brentford will demand at least £60m for his services.

Brentford want £60m or more for Ivan Toney

If the Bees do not receive such an offer, they are thought to be ready to keep hold of the player until the summer, knowing that his goals will help them push up the table.

The report adds that Arsenal would have almost certainly made a bid for Toney in the summer if not for his ban, with the striker said to have admirers at the Emirates.

Finally, the outlet claims that Manchester United’s interest in the 27-year-old has now waned now after they secured the services of Rasmus Hojlund.

Spurs Web Opinion

I would be surprised if Tottenham get involved in a bidding war for Toney. Ange seems happy to have a fluid frontline rather than lining up with an out-and-out centre-forward.

Spurs’ focus in the January window will likely be on strengthening in central defence and upgrading on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg if the Dane leaves.

Thomas Frank has described Ivan Toney as one of the best strikers in the world and admitted that the rumoured Tottenham target does have a price.

Toney is currently serving an eight-month FA ban for breaching betting regulations, which will lapse in January.

Several outlets over the last few weeks have backed the Lilywhites to explore a move for the 27-year-old in the January window.

Football.London recently explained that the striker’s decision to sign with CAA Stellar Sports might work to the North London club’s advantage since Daniel Levy and co have a good relationship with the agency.

Spurs are not the only club eyeing the England international, who is also thought to be on the radars of Arsenal (The Times), Manchester United (Football Transfers) and Chelsea (GiveMeSport).

Ivan Toney has a price amid Tottenham links

Brentford have proven notoriously difficult to negotiate with over the past couple of years, but Frank insisted that the West London club are open to selling their stars if their asking price is met.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football (as relayed by The Daily Mail), the Bees boss said: “I think every club in the world are a selling club except five or six clubs. We are a selling club, if the right price is there.

“I think if it’s the right time for the player to go, from my perspective that’s not my decision that would be Phil [Giles, director of football] or Matthew [Benham, Brentford’s owner] in the end, then I think if they have developed well with us, been on the journey, and now they’re proven good enough to go to the top clubs, then I think it’s the right thing, if it’s the right price.”

When asked if this applies to Toney, Frank responded: “Yeah, I think so. I understand why there are a lot of rumours out there about him.

“For me, he’s one of the best strikers, as a striker No.9, I don’t see many out there who is better in the world than him, of course you have [Harry] Kane, [Robert] Lewandowski, [Erling] Haaland and these types, but not many.

“He scored 20 goals in the Premier League last year, in, of course, a very good Brentford side but of course we are not creating as many chances as the top six or seven teams.

“So imagine him in a top team, he’d easily score 20, 25 goals, for me. I think he’s composed, he’s a good finisher, top mentality, so I understand why clubs are looking at him.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It does sound like Brentford are braced for offers for Toney in January. However, they are likely to demand a substantial fee of around £70m-£80m, which I cannot see Tottenham paying. I expect the England international to end up at Chelsea, who are desperately in need of a number nine.

GiveMeSport have now claimed that Toney has also emerged as a target for the Blues, with Mauricio Pochettino said to be keen on adding another striker to his squad to supplement Nicolas Jackson.

The report alleges that the West London club will enter the market for a new number nine in January and that the Brentford star is part of their three-man shortlist, alongside Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

Spurs Web Opinion

I would be extremely surprised if Tottenham get involved in a bidding war for Toney. Postecoglou is evidently happy to work with up-and-coming young talents rather than readymade stars, which is why I expect Spurs to continue target players in their early twenties, who are in the £40m-£50m price range rather than ones who cost over £70m.
