Roy Keane has admitted that he is worried that Manchester United are falling behind the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

Hardly anyone would have believed you at the start of the season if you had said that Tottenham would be sitting at the top of the Premier League table after 10 matches while Manchester United would be languishing in eighth place, 11 points behind the Lilywhites.

Spurs appeared to be in turmoil, with their record goalscorer leaving and with the fan base being quite angry with the ownership, and many doubted if Ange Postecoglou would be the man to turn the ship around, given his lack of experience at the top level.

In stark contrast, United seemed to have found some continuity under Erik Ten Hag, and appeared ready to kick on and challenge the big guns after the Dutchman led them to a third-place finish and the Carabao Cup in his first season at Old Trafford.

Keane how now admitted that he is concerned that the likes of Spurs, Newcastle and others would move far ahead of Man Utd if his former club do not sort out their mess.

The pundit told Sky Sports (29/10/23 at 12:10 pm) about the Red Devils: “It looks like they are surviving every game. It’s a battle for every result – in previous years, we have been comparing how far Manchester United are behind Manchester City.

“But my worry, at this moment in time, if whatever about Manchester City, it’s all the other teams who seem to have gone past them, at this present moment in time.

“Whether you look at Spurs. Liverpool have recovered. Look where Newcastle are going. Arsenal have got stronger and Manchester United are certainly slipping behind the pack.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Man Utd fans were extremely arrogant in the summer when it was reported that Levy would not sell Kane to a direct rival, with many scoffing at the idea that Spurs were United’s direct rivals.

A lot of their fans got all giddy after one decent season and I certainly do not feel any sympathy for them at the moment.

Ian Wright and Roy Keane have been involved in a debate as to the situation facing Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur. While the former believes there is pressure on the new Spurs boss, Keane insists no one is expecting anything of the club and their new manager.

After a disastrous season last year, Tottenham needed to steady the ship for this campaign and beyond. Ange Postecolgou was selected as the man to bring that stability to North London, and he’s done just that.

Spurs are unbeaten in their first eight league games and currently sit at the top of the table as we enter the international break.

Whether the Lilywhites can sustain this form and mount a title challenge or not, remains to be seen, but there certainly appears to be a great degree of progress in such a short space of time since the Australian took over at the club.

Postecoglou has been getting a tune out of players like Heung-min Son and Yves Bissouma who had struggled last term, and has brought in quality players like James Maddison, too.

Is Ange Postecoglou under any pressure?

Things are going well for Spurs, then. But, in a chat on The Overlap, Ian Wright and Roy Keane just could not agree on the kind of situation Postecoglou finds himself in.

Wright said: “Ange Postecoglou has come in, under a lot of pressure. And he is showing us that Tottenham are playing in a certain way.”

Keane couldn’t seem to believe what he was hearing, and insisted Postecoglou came into the role with no pressure. Wright then asked: “How can he not be under pressure coming from Celtic to Tottenham?”

Keane answered in his typical fashion: “There wasn’t any pressure because people weren’t expecting much. They sold Kane and it was like let’s see how this goes?”

While Keane admits that no one expected Spurs to be achieving what they are now, Wright attempted to make his point that Postecoglou had a lot of mess to clear up at the club. Keane stood firm, though.

“There are no expectations on them because Spurs have done nothing for 20-odd years,” Keane added.

Spurs Web Opinion

I have to admit, I don’t think there has been or will be much pressure on Postecoglou at all this year. I am very much of the opinion that whatever we achieve this year will be under the context of a transitional year, so even a top-six finish would be a success. Naturally, a big job like this comes with normal pressure, but nothing like it has been in recent years.

Roy Keane predictably took a dig at Tottenham while criticising West Ham United after their loss to Manchester United on Wednesday.

Spurs could have found themselves one home game against Blackburn Rovers away from being a Wembley FA Cup semifinal (given how the quarterfinal draw has panned out) had they overcome a weakened Sheffield United side.

Instead, the Lilywhites delivered a lacklustre display and looked toothless in attack without their talisman Harry Kane, eventually falling to a 1-0 loss at Bramall Lane, courtesy of Iliman Ndiaye’s 79th-minute strike.

The result means that Spurs’ 15-year trophy drought looks set to continue for one more year unless they manage to do something extremely special in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, West Ham were also eliminated from the competition on the same evening, with Man Utd coming from a goal down to win 3-1 at Old Trafford.

While analysing the game, Keane could not resist taking a dig at Tottenham.

The Man Utd legend told ITV Sport: “Seen it all before. They come, they get a bit giddy, they have opportunities.”

When asked if he was talking about West Ham in particular, Keane added: “It’s loads of teams – not just West Ham but the Spurs’ of this world.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It would not be like to miss an opportunity to dig out Tottenham.

We certainly cannot say we do not deserve it, given our tendency to constantly throw away opportunities to win silverware, year in, year out.

Covering the World Cup for ITV Sport (4/12/2022, 7:45 pm), football pundit Roy Keane praised Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane for his goal against Senegal, but did describe the England captain’s first half performance as ‘sluggish.’

Having qualified at the top of Group B, England faced a Senegal side who had impressed in the group stages. No game in the knockout stage of the World Cup is ever going to be easy, but the Three Lions had a fairly comfortable night in Qatar.

England won 3-0, thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane, and Bukayo Saka. The game was ultimately won in the first half, with Gareth Southgate’s men going in to the break two to the good after Kane’s goal in stoppage time.

That was Kane’s first goal of the tournament, and took his tally to 52 international goals in 79 games (Transfermarkt).

While Kane may have picked up the Player of the Match award, and applied a cool finish for his goal, Roy Keane did have some criticism of his first half display.

Keane said: “Never in doubt (about Kane scoring). With his quality, two bits of brilliance really from England.

“The second goal was fantastic. Foden lays it off with his left foot, a little bit of luck, a slight deflection and game over. Kane, the dream chance he wanted.

“He probably even looked sluggish in this half. But once he got that chance, he could never believe it. One v one with the goalkeeper and he was never in danger of missing this. Never.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I think the whole team looked a little bit off the pace for the first 30 mins but once we got that first goal, we were completely in control.

It was a comprehensive victory and a real signal of intent moving into the quarter-finals, and it’s going to do everyone a world of good to see Kane get his first goal of the tournament, too.

Roy Keane admitted that he was impressed with the performance Tottenham produced in their season opener on Saturday and backed the Lilywhites to have a ‘brilliant’ campaign.

Spurs fans may have been surprised to see none of the new signings making Antonio Conte’s starting eleven for the club’s season opener against Southampton, with the Italian choosing to keep faith in the same team that finished last season so well.

The match did not get off the best of starts for the home side as James Ward-Prowse gave Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men the lead with just 12 minutes gone on the clock.

However, Spurs came roaring back to score twice in quick succession to take a 2-1 lead into the interval before another quickfire double in the second half saw the result wrapped up just past the hour mark.

Keane insisted he had no doubts that Tottenham would come back from going a goal down on Saturday, given the momentum and belief at the North London club at the moment.

The former Manchester United man told Sky Sports Premier League (7:11 pm, August 7, 2022) about Spurs’ 4-1 win: “You just knew yesterday they would come back, strength in depth, outstanding manager, there’s momentum at the club, obviously a lot of belief and confidence. I think Spurs are set up for a brilliant season.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Roy Keane has never been particularly complimentary about Tottenham in the past. The fact that even he is giving such high praise does suggest Spurs might be on the cusp of something special under Conte.

However, you cannot read too much into one performance, particularly given how poor a side Southampton are. We will learn a lot more about the side when they travel to Stamford Bridge next week.

Roy Keane doesn’t offer praise to Tottenham Hotspur very often, so it came as somewhat of a surprise when the pundit decided to back Spurs to close the gap on Man City and Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title this season.

Keane has been known to criticise Spurs in his television appearances in the past. After a 0-0 draw with Bournemouth in 2020, Keane said “That’s in Tottenham’s DNA, they will constantly disappoint you,” during the coverage on Sky Sports.

One of the more famous anecdotes from the former Manchester United midfielder’s career (The Guardian) relates to a three-word team talk before a fixture against Spurs, where Sir Alex Ferguson simply said: “Lads, it’s Tottenham.”

Funnily enough, the Irishman revealed in the past he has a “soft spot” for the North London club (The Overlap), although he doesn’t show it often. He even went as far as to say “Spurs was my team as a kid. Bizarrely.”

That soft spot more than likely shrank over the years, during his tenure at Old Trafford, where he enjoyed many a heated affair with Tottenham Hotspur. Keane is not one to mince his words, so any positive comment should not be taken lightly.

While covering the Community Shield match for ITV (30/07/2022 – 4:55pm), the pundit had a surprising answer when he was asked who can challenge the top two teams in England in the forthcoming campaign.

“I am going to say Spurs, believe it or not. Spurs could try and get near these two.”

Spurs Web Opinion

As surprising as it is to hear these words come from Roy Keane, you’d like to think that Spurs can indeed close the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool this season. While it may be premature to hope for a genuine title challenge, to get closer to the top two certainly has to be the aim for Antonio Conte’s men over the course of the new campaign.

Roy Keane has insisted that Jesse Lingard, who was reportedly wanted by Antonio Conte in January, is not good enough for Manchester United.

ESPN reported during the January transfer window that Spurs had expressed an interest in Lingard but United refused to enter into negotiations with the Lilywhites since they saw Antonio Conte’s men as direct rivals for Champions League qualification.

It was claimed that United’s refusal to enter into talks with Spurs or West Ham left the 29-year-old disappointed.

Fabrizio Romano revealed last month on the Here We Go podcast (starting at 6:18) that Tottenham were one of three leading contenders for the England international’s signature ahead of the summer transfer window, along with West Ham and Newcastle.

Alasdair Gold has subsequently claimed on a Q&A on Football.London that Spurs had spoken to Lingard over a summer move but the North London club received indications that the attacking midfielder would prefer a move abroad.

Lingard played the majority of Man Utd’s 4-0 loss at Anfield on Wednesday after replacing the injured Paul Pogba in the 10th minute.

Roy Keane told Sky Sports after the Red Devils’ humiliating defeat: “I’ve never known so many players wanting to leave Manchester United… the greatest club in the world.

“You could see after the Everton defeat they have already left the building. They’re gone.

“Lingard coming on to try and save Man United. Lingard should have left two years ago – he’s not good enough.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It certainly made sense why Conte wanted Lingard in January, with the likes of Dele Alli, Lo Celso and Ndombele departing. I do expect us to sign a number eight this summer in order to provide more tactical flexibility but I would much prefer Eriksen to Lingard, although I do believe the Man Utd man could be a decent fit for Conte’s system.

Roy Keane has admitted that Troy Parrott’s goal for the Republic of Ireland against Lithuania was important for the Tottenham man’s confidence as his career had stalled a little over recent times.

After a lacklustre start to his loan spell at MK Dons, Parrott has been in fantastic form for the League One club since the turn of the year.

Although the 20-year-old has not scored as many goals as he would have liked this season, he has become creator-in-chief for Liam Manning’s side in the number ten role.

The Spurs youngster, who picked up the Dons’ Player of the Month award for February, translated his form to the international scene this week.

After coming on as a substitute in the 63rd minute, Parrott struck a brilliant half-volley from outside the box in stoppage time to help the Republic of Ireland to a 1-0 win over Lithuania.

While Keane was pleased with Ireland’s win and Parrott’s contribution, he was less than impressed by the celebration after the final whistle.

The Man Utd legend told ITV Sport (30/03/22 at 12:05 am): “It was an important win. Better late than never, but they made hard work of it.

“I think the celebrations at the end are way over the top. But an important goal, even for Parrott, he’s a young player.

“His career has probably stalled a little bit. But they kept going. Showed a bit of spirit and fight. You take that win. The feel-good factor. Keep that going. A bit of momentum.

“Honestly. That’s way over the top. For managers, staff and players. To react that way, to a friendly win. Come on! Get over it.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Goals breed confidence for strikers and Parrott will certainly be buoyed by that strike. I would not be surprised if the floodgates now open for the 20-year-old back at MK Dons until the end of the season.

He will then have an opportunity to impress Conte and his coaching staff during pre-season. If they do not feel he is quite ready for the first-team at Tottenham, then a loan to the Championship club could be on the cards next season for the youngster.

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane has claimed that only two members of the Tottenham Hotspur squad are not ‘pretty average’.

Keane was speaking after Antonio Conte’s side suffered a frustrating 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford yesterday evening with the north Londoners having succumbed to a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick when in fact they were the better team for the majority of the Premier League encounter.

The 50-year-old praised Harry Kane and Heung-min Son as outstanding players but pulled no punches with his assessment of the rest of the team which is the reason why he thinks Spurs’ results have been indifferent.

Keane suggested that Conte will want to revamp the squad in the summer and bring in better players than what he currently has at his disposal.

He told Sky Sports: “Spurs have very good players, Kane and Son; the rest are pretty average.

“That’s why the results are the way they are because Spurs aren’t good. They’re not bad on their day, everyone was delighted when they beat City because they done well, conceded two, beat Everton – who were all over the place.

“But this is still an average Spurs team, I’ve argued with Jamie who fight their corner, the results.

“They’re good going forward but they concede the three goals. Conte’s an emotional guy but get to the summer, he’ll want to go back and get in better. Spurs are not very good.”

SpursWeb Opinion

Keane is being somewhat harsh with his assessment that the rest of the team are average.  Cristian Romero has already proven himself to be one of the best defenders in the league while Dejan Kulusevski has impressed in the majority of his outings since joining from Juventus.

Granted, there are players who would struggle to get into many of the other top six sides and there has to be a significant revamp of the playing personnel.  The pressure is firmly on Daniel Levy to put his hand in his pocket or risk Conte walking away.

Cristian Romero’s actions following Harry Maguire’s own goal during the Premier League match between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have drawn criticism.

A cross from Sergio Reguilon which Maguire attempted to clear saw the ball go beyond David de Gea and level the scoreline at 2-2.

While Maguire was still on the floor coming to terms with his error, Romero was seen celebrating in the face of the United defender.

His actions were condemned by Roy Keane, Michael Dawson and Gary Neville who were all part of Sky Sports’ post-match punditry panel at Old Trafford in a game which saw Cristiano Ronaldo steal the headlines with his hat-trick to secure his side a 3-2 victory and leave Spurs’ Champions League hopes in tatters.

Keane claimed that Maguire will not forget what the Argentine decided to do to him.

The former midfielder said: “You remember that when you’re a player, you take note of that.  Don’t worry.”

Dawson was equally not impressed, believing that such decisions often backfire: “It comes back to haunt you, things like that.  Certainly, as a defender, you make mistakes.  Things like that don’t go right.  You don’t need to see that, it could be you next week.”

SpursWeb Opinion

Romero needs to curb his hot-headedness which often finds his way into the referee’s book, on this occasion his decision to taunt Maguire did backfire with Spurs heading back to London without a point to their name.

Roy Keane has insisted Manchester United do not have much to worry about given that Tottenham Hotspur are their next opponents on Saturday.

Despite struggling for consistency over the last couple of months, Tottenham still find themselves in with a chance of qualifying for the Champions League this season.

That is partly thanks to the poor form of some of their rivals, including Manchester United, who have failed to take advantage of Spurs’ slip-ups.

United crumbled to a 4-1 defeat in the Manchester derby on Sunday in what came as a big blow to the Red Devils’ hopes of finishing fourth.

The clash at Old Trafford on Saturday could thus be season-defining for both clubs, with neither Antonio Conte’s men nor Ralf Rangnick being able to afford another defeat.

However, Keane seemed to suggest he is not at all worried about Man United’s next task, hinting that his former club would not have much trouble against the Lilywhites.

When asked about the upcoming clash against Tottenham, he told Sky Sports Premier League (7:42 pm, March 6, 2022): “It’s only Spurs next week. It’s only Spurs.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Even the most hardened Spurs fan would likely realise that there is a kernel of truth to Keane’s assertion. It is quite possible that Spurs will go to Old Trafford and crumble under pressure, particularly if the home side score the first goal.

The race for fourth place in the Premier League continues to hot up with the final stretch of the campaign now in sight.

Tottenham Hotspur take to the field this evening against relegation-threatened Everton in north London with both sides having contrasting priorities.

Antonio Conte’s side come into the fixture in seventh place in the table and are six points behind rivals Arsenal who occupy fourth with both teams having played the same amount of games.

Arsenal leapfrogged Manchester United with a 3-2 win against Watford yesterday, while the Old Trafford outfit were unable to reclaim their place after suffering a 4-1 defeat at Manchester City.

Despite the loss to their cross-city rivals, former United midfielder Roy Keane believes that his old side will still secure the final Champions League spot.

Keane said during his punditry appearance on Sky Sports’ Premier League TV channel (7:42pm, March 6, 2022): “Arsenal could be slight favourites now. I am praising Arsenal because they are doing well in the league, but they have had some shocking results in the cup competitions.

“If you said that a few months ago that they could finish ahead of Man United, you would have been locked up. It’s amazing, a big turnaround, but United, I think they will do it.”

SpursWeb Opinion

Anything less than three points against Everton would be a disaster and all but end Tottenham’s outside chances of pipping Arsenal and Manchester United to fourth.

Spurs still have to face United and Arsenal before the end of the campaign, with every game now a must-win, failure to finish fourth will only stoke the fires of the Harry Kane rumour mill ahead of next season.

Roy Keane has questioned Harry Kane’s leadership and insisted that the striker needs to take a large share of the blame for Tottenham’s defeat to Middlesbrough.

Spurs put in an extremely disappointing performance at the Riverside Stadium and the home side deservedly sealed their progress to the quarterfinal stage of the competition at the North Londoners’ expense.

It has since emerged that being eliminated from the FA Cup could make it harder for Tottenham to hold on to Kane as the striker was hoping that winning the competition could pave the way for the club to lift further trophies with Antonio Conte (Evening Standard).

However, Keane believes that the England captain needs to first take a long hard look in the mirror and take some responsibility for the Lilywhites’ poor showing on Tuesday.

The former Manchester United midfielder told ITV about Kane: “He is part of the problem Where was he yesterday?

“If he is your main striker he has to do more – he has to lead them. He does not lead them that well and you saw that yesterday.”

“You shouldn’t be surprised about Spurs losing these games. Spurs, Spursy – I’m not sure how many times that we have to say it. But I’m not surprised about them losing that game.

“Midweek, Middlesbrough, probably a bit cold – I wasn’t surprised with the result yesterday.”

Ian Wright insisted that Antonio Conte’s men were too easy to stop once Boro nullified the threat of Kane dropping deep.

The former Arsenal striker said: “If you can condense them and stop Harry Kane from coming deep, then they are a lot easier to beat – and that is what Middlesbrough did yesterday.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Both Kane and Son had off-nights on Tuesday. Unfortunately, that meant that we did not really pose much of a threat to the Boro backline. I believe Conte also deserves a large portion of the blame as he seemed hesitant to change tactics and press Boro high up the pitch despite the fact that we were struggling to create chances.

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane believes that Dele Alli needs to leave Tottenham Hotspur, claiming the player has lost his way in north London.

Dele was left out of Antonio Conte’s squad for the Premier League clash at Chelsea yesterday afternoon.

The 25-year-old, who is under contract until 2024 (transfermarkt), has made 10 Premier League appearances this season and was an unused substitute in their two most recent games prior to the trip to Stamford Bridge.

Dele has been linked with a move to strugglers Newcastle United (The Sun) with the Magpies having become the richest club in the top flight following their takeover late last year (Marca).

Keane believes that a move to the Magpies could rejuvenate his career in the North East and become a darling among the Toon Army faithful.

The 50-year-old, who was appearing as a pundit on Sky Sports Premier League said after the 2-0 defeat for Antonio Conte’s side: “I think the kid’s lost the eye of the tiger.  I think sometimes you have to let a kid go.

“That’s the nature of football. You’ve done your time here, you’ve obviously lost your way, be good to the kid, you’ve been a good signing for us.

“They paid £5m for him, let the kid go.”

When asked by Jamie Redknapp about where Dele could end up, Keane added: “To Newcastle, [He could] get his career going up there,”

Keane continued. “The fans would love him if he comes in.”

SpursWeb Opinion

Dele’s career has stalled in recent seasons and it would certainly be in the best interests of all if he were to leave the club this month.   Spurs may also want to try and cash in, given the length of contract he has at the club to maximise his value.

Roy Keane has insisted he does not see Tottenham Hotspur as a major threat in the race for a top-four finish this season.

Results have certainly improved for Spurs since Antonio Conte’s arrival at the start of November, with the North Londoners having won three and drawn two of their five Premier League matches under the Italian.

Spurs currently sit in seventh place in the table, five points below fourth-placed Arsenal but the Lilywhites have three games in hand over the Gunners after their matches against Burnley, Brighton and Leicester were postponed this month.

As things stand, it looks to be a four-horse race for the fourth spot between Manchester United, Arsenal, West Ham and Spurs, although Conte’s men could also be just three points behind third-placed Chelsea should they win their games in hand over the Blues.

However, Keane is not convinced that Tottenham are a big threat to Man United in the race for Champions League qualification.

Micah Richards on Sky’s Driving Home for Christmas: “Let’s move onto the chasing pack. You have got the West Hams. You have got the Spurs, the Arsenals.”

Keane then responded: “Go easy on Spurs. Honestly, are you suggesting Spurs are a threat to the top four?”

Spurs Web Opinion

Spurs are not favourites to finish in the top four but to suggest that we are not contenders for the fourth spot is ridiculous. We are certainly having a new manager bounce under Conte and I believe it will eventually end up being a fight between United and us for the last CL qualification spot.

Roy Keane has admitted he was shocked by Amazon Prime’s All or Nothing documentary on Tottenham, insisting the series showed the poor culture at the club.

Amazon filmed a fly on the wall documentary of Tottenham’s 2019/20 campaign, which proved to be quite a tumultuous one for the club, with Mauricio Pochettino being sacked and Jose Mourinho being brought in.

The series featured several interesting moments in the series, including an argument between Mourinho and Danny Rose and an altercation between Hugo Lloris and Son Heung-min.

However, it was a feud between Eric Dier and Dele Alli thought caught Keane’s eye, with the former Manchester United man not impressed with the lack of aggression the pair showed in their post-match confrontation.

The pundit told Micah Richards’ Driving Home for Christmas’ series: “Spurs must be a hard job. Imagine the culture at Spurs.

“Have you seen that documentary? When I watched that documentary – and I know it can get edited and all that – I was shocked (at) what was going on at the club.

“Even the players in the dressing room, the medical room – everyone was on their phones. They showed a couple of players falling out, maybe it was Alli and Dier, but they were arguing like children.

“They were going ‘oh you need to do your job’. There was no aggression! They were like actors with no emotion behind it.”

Keane was also less than impressed with Harry Kane’s pre-match talks, questioning why they were needed in the first place and why the entire squad was in the huddle.

He added: “Harry Kane was doing a talk before the games. Oh my, God Harry, you need to liven up man.

“First of all, if you’re going to have a speech before every game, players are going to get bored of it. Why (do) you think you need speeches before matches?

“And you know when people were having huddles before the match and there’s like 600 people in it? It loses what it’s about.

“The bus driver was in it, the chef (as well). I’d be like ‘You, get out of this circle of whatever we’re doing’.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Kane’s pre-match speeches were certainly less than inspiring. The 28-year-old has always been one who leads by example rather than one for big speeches.

However, it is not right to judge the ‘culture’ of the club based on the Amazon series. Keane is in no position to judge it as the dressing room dynamics at all clubs has evolved completely since his time as a player.

The players these days are not as tough and uncompromising as they used to be, and that is a change that has happened on a societal and cultural level, rather than just in football.

Roy Keane has claimed that Antonio Conte would have been delighted to see Harry Kane finding his scoring boots over the international break.

With Conte being just two weeks into his job at Tottenham, the international break certainly did not come at the right time for the Italian as he tries to get the squad accustomed to his ideas.

According to reports, the 52-year-old has put the players who have remained at Hotspur Way through a rigorous training regime as he aims to get their fitness up to his speed.

Despite not having the opportunity to work with Kane over the last week and a half, Conte would have seen the striker net seven goals for England in their thumping wins over Albania and San Marino.

Keane believes that the Spurs boss would have been over the moon to see his star-striker back among the goals, insisting that the 28-year-old’s two international outings are better than any training he could have done back at Hotspur Way.

The Manchester United legend told ITV (from 20:45, November 15, 2021): “Conte will be delighted [with Kane’s goals for England over the international break].

“A lot of managers complain about their players playing for their country – I’ve experienced that myself – but Conte will be sitting at home going, ‘what he’s doing with England is better than any training he could’ve done’.

“He’s scoring goals, he’ll go back to Tottenham with spring in his step.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We have seen time and again how strikers go into a shell when their goals run dry and suddenly look like world-beaters after finding the back of the net on a couple of occasions.

Kane’s confidence would have certainly taken a hit over recent months as the 28-year-old has never really had a barren spell in the seven years since he broke through at Spurs.

So, Keane is right in saying that Kane could be a different player on the back of his international break. Conte will also be delighted with the fact that Southgate took the striker off around the hour mark in both matches.

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane aimed a dig at Tottenham Hotspur ahead of England’s World Cup qualifier against Albania yesterday evening.

Heading into the match at Wembley, Kane had not scored in eight hours and 38 minutes of action for Tottenham and also failed to find the back of the net against Hungary last month.

Keane was appearing as a pundit for ITV Sport and was asked about the 28-year-old in which he took aim and suggested that the Three Lions captain had to buck up his ideas.

The 50-year-old claimed that Kane should be used to disappointment, given the fact that he plays for Tottenham considering the North Londoners struggle to win silverware to the amusement of Ian Wright, with their last success coming thirteen years ago when they beat Chelsea in the League Cup final.

Kane answered his critics in the best possible way with a clinical display of finishing in the first half, having netted a hat-trick while also providing an assist for Jordan Henderson.

Keane told ITV (12/11/21 at 19:35): “He’s [Kane] got to liven up, he’s got to liven up,

“He’s got to look at himself and say “Get over these disappointments” – look, he plays for Spurs he should be used to disappointment, it’s not like they win stuff.

“Get back to the basics, get hold of the ball, show some sort of leadership and no more excuses.”

SpursWeb Opinion

Roy Keane is known for his dry sense of humour and it is not the first time that he has aimed a dig at Spurs, however, fans now have the optimism that significant improvement could be around the corner under the management of Antonio Conte.

The Italian’s no-nonsense approach is exactly what the players need after the disappointing tenures of Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo.

Roy Keane has criticised Harry Kane’s display against Hungary last night after admitting that the Tottenham man does not look up to speed.

Kane is yet to open his account in the Premier League this season and the striker’s performances for Spurs have left a lot to be desired.

The Mirror put the 28-year-old’s sluggish performances down to his failed move to Manchester City in the summer.

England boss Gareth Southgate insisted ahead of his side’s World Cup qualifier against Hungary that the striker’s situation at club level does not affect the Three Lions, pointing out that Kane scored three goals in an England shirt last month.

However, the Spurs star put in another disappointing display at Wembley after England were held to a 1-1 draw.

Speaking after the game, Keane insisted that something was certainly off with the England captain, admitting that he looks far from his best in general play.

The former Manchester United man told ITV: “There’s a little grumble with Harry Kane.

“When he’s on it he’s fantastic, but when he’s off it – we’ve seen it many times before, it almost looks like he’s on his heels, can’t get up to speed with the game.

“Whatever’s going on at club level, he does need to do a bit more when he’s not at his best in terms of his general play.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I agree with Keane that it is not Kane’s lack of goals that is the big concern as I am sure he will find his scoring boots soon. What is more concerning is how off-the-pace he looks in general play. It does seem like the striker has lost a bit of confidence over recent months.

Roy Keane has praised rumoured Tottenham target, Sam Johnstone, for his display in England’s 5-0 win over Andorra on Saturday.

Tottenham were linked with a move for Johnstone during the summer on the back of his impressive showing for the Baggies in the Premier League last season.

However, the North London club instead chose to bring in Pierluigi Gollini from Atalanta on an initial loan deal with an option to buy while Johnstone remained at the Hawthorns.

The print edition of the Sunday Mirror (03/10/21, p71) claimed that Tottenham could reignite their interest in the Baggies star when the transfer market opens in January.

The report asserted that West Brom could demand £20m for Johnstone in January and that Spurs had scouted the goalkeeper on multiple occasions this season.

Johnstone started between the sticks for England in their World Cup Qualifier against Andorra, with Gareth Southgate naming a largely second-string side.

The 28-year-old kept a clean sheet as the Three Lions emerged 5-0 winners and he also played a big part in Jack Grealish’s goal, with the goalkeeper’s bullet-like throw feeding the run of the on-rushing City star.

Reacting to Johnstone’s display, Keane told ITV Sport (09/10/21 at 9:50 pm): “He has had a quiet night.

“He hasn’t had much to do, so whatever he has had to do, you hope he does it properly.

“Good reaction from Jack (Grealish), when he sees the keeper getting it. Good execution. Good throw and Jack does the rest. Lovely goal and the keeper will be pleased.

“Jack’s reaction, he’s away and you are thinking can he (Johnstone) put it ahead of Jack? Perfect throw, but having said that, it’s their job now. Distribution with their feet. But it was nice to see Jack acknowledging it.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I rate Johnstone very highly but I do not see why Spurs would go for the Baggies number one in January unless Nuno and his coaching staff have already decided that Gollini is not the answer.

One would expect the Italian to serve as Lloris’ understudy for the remainder of the campaign before the club make a decision on him at the end of his loan spell.
