Roy Keane has admitted that he is worried that Manchester United are falling behind the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

Hardly anyone would have believed you at the start of the season if you had said that Tottenham would be sitting at the top of the Premier League table after 10 matches while Manchester United would be languishing in eighth place, 11 points behind the Lilywhites.

Spurs appeared to be in turmoil, with their record goalscorer leaving and with the fan base being quite angry with the ownership, and many doubted if Ange Postecoglou would be the man to turn the ship around, given his lack of experience at the top level.

In stark contrast, United seemed to have found some continuity under Erik Ten Hag, and appeared ready to kick on and challenge the big guns after the Dutchman led them to a third-place finish and the Carabao Cup in his first season at Old Trafford.

Keane how now admitted that he is concerned that the likes of Spurs, Newcastle and others would move far ahead of Man Utd if his former club do not sort out their mess.

The pundit told Sky Sports (29/10/23 at 12:10 pm) about the Red Devils: “It looks like they are surviving every game. It’s a battle for every result – in previous years, we have been comparing how far Manchester United are behind Manchester City.

“But my worry, at this moment in time, if whatever about Manchester City, it’s all the other teams who seem to have gone past them, at this present moment in time.

“Whether you look at Spurs. Liverpool have recovered. Look where Newcastle are going. Arsenal have got stronger and Manchester United are certainly slipping behind the pack.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Man Utd fans were extremely arrogant in the summer when it was reported that Levy would not sell Kane to a direct rival, with many scoffing at the idea that Spurs were United’s direct rivals.

A lot of their fans got all giddy after one decent season and I certainly do not feel any sympathy for them at the moment.

Chris Sutton has come down hard on Erik Ten Hag, insisting that Ange Postecoglou would not stand for the lack of effort from some of the Manchester United players if he was in charge at Old Trafford.

Postecoglou has been referenced a lot over the last few days in the criticism levelled at Ten Hag for failing to employ a clear style of play at Man Utd.

Jamie Carragher was one of many to point to how quickly the Australian has got Spurs playing attacking, front-foot football (Sky Sports).

To push back against Carragher’s point, Neville suggested that unlike Ten Hag, Postecoglou and Unai Emery went into stable environments at Tottenham and Aston Villa respectively.

This suggestion has been laughed off by many Spurs fans, who pointed out on social media that the Lilywhites were in turmoil when the Australian arrived in the summer.

Erik ten Hag should be more like Postecoglou

Sutton has now stated that Ten Hag is fully deserving of criticism, stating that the likes of Postecoglou, Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp would not accept the current standards at United.

The former Celtic man said on It’s All Kicking Off podcast about the Red Devils: “They have players in their team who can’t run and they have players in the team who won’t run. That is an issue.

“I thought Danny Murphy’s analysis was really brilliant on Match of the Day in terms of bang on. In terms of if these players played for Pep, Klopp or Postecoglou, they wouldn’t pick them.

“If you don’t run, then you don’t play. That’s such a basic thing in football. Ten Hag has been in long enough now where that is on him.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While there is no doubt that Tottenham were in turmoil on the pitch when Ange arrived, Neville’s point was about Man Utd’s issues at boardroom level.

Even though Paratici had to officially resign from his position at Spurs after FIFA’s ruling, he continued to work as a consultant at the club and the recruitment department at N17 continued functioning as it was.

However, that is not the case at Man Utd, with Ten Hag seemingly being given free rein to choose his transfer targets and the Dutchman has got his recruitment decisions wrong.

Fichajes.net have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are now giving serious thought to a potential move for Manchester United star Jadon Sancho in January.

Sancho remains frozen out of the first-team picture at Man Utd after refusing to apologise to Erik Ten Hag after their pair’s public falling out (Goal.com).

According to Fichajes, amidst his ‘strained relationship’ with Ten Hag, the winger wants a ‘change of scenery in January’ as he wants to get regular minutes under his belt and get his career back on track.

The England international has allegedly ‘aroused great interest’ from Tottenham, with Ange Postecoglou thought to see the player as the ideal reinforcement, given the injuries to Ivan Perisic and Manor Solomon.

Could Jadon Sancho be a success at Tottenham?

The report states that the Australian coach wants to strengthen Spurs’ attack in January in order to help the club sustain their bid for the Premier League title and that he believes that signing Sancho would be a ‘significant step’ in this direction.

The outlet asserts that Man Utd value the 23-year-old at €35m (£30.5m), which is a figure that Tottenham are ‘seriously considering’, with the Lilywhites said to be ‘carefully evaluating’ whether to make the investment.

Fichajes add that Spurs are expected to begin talks with Sancho’s representatives and with the Red Devils over the coming months.

Spurs Web Opinion

We know that Ange is very particular about the kind of personality that he wants to bring to the club. So, it remains to be seen if the Australian would be convinced after speaking to Sancho that the 23-year-old would be the right fit for his project at Spurs.

Journalist Ben Jacobs has suggested that Tottenham’s former head of recruitment Paul Mitchell is now the leading candidate to take over as Manchester United’s new sporting director.

Mitchell joined Tottenham as a head of scouting from Southampton, following Mauricio Pochettino from St. Mary’s to the North London club, before becoming the club’s head of recruitment.

The 42-year-old left Spurs back in 2018 to join the Red Bull Group and he has been serving as Monaco’s sporting director for the last three years.

There were some suggestions during the summer that Spurs could look to reappoint Mitchell as Fabio Paratici’s replacement (GiveMeSport) but that did not come to fruition, with the Lilywhites eventually bringing Johan Lange through the door.

Could Paul Mitchell make PL return with Man Utd?

Jones has now taken to social media to reveal that with INEOS Group set to buy a minority stake in Man Utd, Mitchell has become the favourite to become the Red Devils’ next sporting director.

Spurs Web Opinion

While Paul Mitchell had some big hits during his time at Tottenham (notable Son Heung-min and Toby Alderweireld), he also had some big misses, which has also been the case for the Englishman at Monaco. So, I am not convinced that his reputation as a genius talent spotter is completely warranted.

The Telegraph have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur’s multi-year partnership with Ineos will not be scrapped despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe potentially being on the verge of buying a minority stake in Manchester United.

Ineos, which is founded and owned by Ratcliffe, first began sponsorship connections with Spurs three years ago when they became the club’s official hand sanitiser supplier during the pandemic.

Last year, the petrochemicals firm announced a multi-year partnership with the North London club, with the branding of the firm featuring prominently at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Ratcliffe could own Man United and sponsor Spurs

However, Ratcliffe is now said to be closing in on buying a 25 per cent stake in Man Utd from the Glazer family, with the part-ownership bid expected to be voted on on Thursday if a submission is finalised in time.

If it is successful, the British billionaire would assume full footballing control of the Red Devils.

However, The Telegraph assert that even if Ratcliffe reaches an agreement with the Glazers, there are no plans to tear up the agreement with Spurs.

Spurs Web Opinion

If this is indeed true, Ineos are perhaps convinced that there is no potential conflict of interest involved, with their agreement with Spurs being quite a minor deal in comparison to their proposed minority takeover of Man Utd.

News of Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim’s failed effort to buy Manchester United could have an impact on Tottenham as it was previously reported that he has also shown an interest in a takeover of Spurs.

Over the last 12 months, there have been numerous updates on Sheikh Jassim’s bid to buy Man Utd from the Glazer family and it now appears as if their efforts might fall through.

Fabrizio Romano reported over the weekend that the latest rounds of negotiations between the Qatari investors and Man Utd’s American owners did not go as planned.

He explained that after Jassim’s latest bid had been rejected again by the Glazers, he is now ready to end his interest in the Manchester club.

This might affect Tottenham as it was reported by ESPN’s Mark Ogden back in May that Jassim is determined to have his footprint in the Premier League and would consider buying Spurs if he is unable to take over the Red Devils.

Daniel Levy

Could Spurs be subject to Qatari interest?

Ogden told The United Stand at the time: “They want the Premier League footprint. Somebody told me recently, they said that if the Qataris don’t buy Manchester United, they’ll be back and they might end up buying Tottenham.

“He said, look, if you’ve got Manchester City owned by Abu Dhabi, you’ve got Newcastle owned by Saudi Arabia, if Qataris maybe buy Tottenham, then you’ve got three clubs who can pull away.

“Every year, it would be United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal fighting for fourth spot, which is quite a terrifying prospect for [them].”

Daniel Levy admitted in an interview with Bloomberg last month that while he and ENIC are not actively looking to sell Tottenham, he has a responsibility to the shareholders to consider any bid that comes their way.

Spurs Web Opinion

If the Qatari consortium are not able to agree on a deal with the Glazers for Man Utd, I doubt they would have much luck in striking a deal with Levy and ENIC for Spurs.

While Man Utd are undoubtedly a bigger global brand, Tottenham have significantly better infrastructure in place and the earning capacity of the stadium is much higher. So, one would expect ENIC to demand a fee not too dissimilar to the one that the Glazers are asking for United.

Fabrizio Romano has said that Manchester United are also interested in Tottenham target Edmond Tapsoba, but the Red Devils will find the deal quite difficult to do.

Spurs strengthened their backline with the addition of Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg during the summer and the Dutchman has certainly hit the ground running in North London.

However, some Tottenham fans will feel that the club could have done more to revamp their options in central defence.

Another player who reportedly featured high on the Lilywhites’ wishlist during the summer was Tapsoba (GiveMeSport) but the 24-year-old stayed put at Bayer Leverkusen.

In what came as a blow to Spurs, the Bundesliga outfit officially confirmed last month that the Burkina Faso international had put pen to paper on a new five-year deal at the club.

Man United and Spurs looking at Edmond Tapsoba

However, this has not ended the speculation linking Tapsoba with a move to Tottenham, with Football Insider claiming a few days ago that the 24-year-old remains part of the club’s two-man shortlist to replace Eric Dier in January.

Romano has now revealed that Erik Ten Hag’s men also have a keen eye on Tapsoba ahead of the January window.

The journalist about United’s pursuit of a centre-back on his YouTube channel: “Also Tapsoba from Bayer Leverkusen. He was on the list of Tottenham, but now also of Manchester United and he is a player appreciated by them. It is not an easy deal because he extended his contract at Leverkusen a couple of weeks ago.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Given the start that Leverkusen have made to the season and the fact that Tapsoba only recently signed a new contract, the German club will likely demand an astronomical fee for the 24-year-old in January. Tottenham might lean towards more economical options such as Lloyd Kelly.

Tottenham Hotspur are thought to be keen to add Andrea Berta to their roster of executives, but the North London club will have to fight off Manchester United and PSG if they are to appoint the Atletico Madrid man.

It is a time of great change at Tottenham right now. The Italian regime that presided over affairs in the last couple of years has well and truly gone, and the club’s hierarchy is being restructured before our very eyes.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy appears to have made the right call this time, with the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as first team manager proving to be a success so far.

In line with Postecoglou’s energetic, no-nonsense personality and the exciting, attacking football he has brought to the club, it seems the executive positions around him are being filled with a similar approach.

Scott Munn has finally started his tenure as Tottenham’s Chief Football Officer, and now the club are seemingly keen to appoint someone to oversee transfer activity, in a similar role to the one previously held by Fabio Paratici.

Spurs want Atletico Madrid transfer guru

According to a report from the Independent, Spurs may have found their man. The only problem is, Manchester United and PSG have eyes on him, too.

The two English clubs “have been considering” Andrea Berta for an executive role, but there could well be “competition” for his services in the form of the Ligue 1 giants.

Funnily enough, Berta would bring some Italian representation back to North London. Berta is said to carry a “strong reputation in the game” after resolving Atletico Madrid’s “haphazard” recruitment strategy.

Berta also fits Tottenham’s desire to locate and acquire a “younger profile of player” in the Postecoglou era. However, Manchester United have “been interested in him before” and feel now could be the right time to make a move.

Meanwhile, PSG are undergoing an “overhaul of their entire football identity” and it is believed Berta offers “the type of outlook” the French club are wanting to pivot to.

Berta has been with Atletico Madrid for the last ten years, initially as Technical Director, before being promoted to the role of Sporting Director in 2017.

Spurs Web Opinion

Andrea Berta certainly seems to fit the profile of what Spurs are looking for when it comes to the transfer side of things, and he’s done a great job at Atletico Madrid.

However, the fact that Manchester United and PSG are both keen, too, suggests we had better have a few alternatives prepared, just in case.

Rio Ferdinand has said that he would rate James Maddison higher than Mason Mount even though Manchester United paid more for the former Chelsea man than Tottenham did for the 26-year-old.

Maddison was voted August’s Player of the Month on the back of his impressive start to the season and the midfielder has subsequently shown that he loves the big occasion, delivering two exemplary displays against Arsenal and Liverpool.

Many of Tottenham’s Premier League rivals will undoubtedly be left ruing the fact they did not vie for the former Leicester City man’s signature in the summer, with Spurs paying just £40m for his services.

Would you rather have Maddison or Mount?

In contrast, Mount, who Man Utd paid £55m for in the summer, has endured a rocky start to his time at Old Trafford.

Ferdinand was asked about the pair’s rating in the new EA FC game, with the Tottenham man being awarded an overall rating of 84 while Mount only had 81.

When quizzed if the rating is fair, the former Man Utd man told talkSPORT: “That score would have been reversed if it was two years ago. But right now on form you’ve got to go Maddison.

“He’s gone into Spurs and they look a really good team and everything positive they’re doing he’s at the heartbeat of it.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I suspect that the reason the likes of Man Utd, Newcastle and Arsenal did not push the boat for Maddison is that they saw him as more of an old-fashioned number ten rather than a press-resistant number eight.

The 26-year-old has disproved that assumption over the last few weeks as he has repeatedly dropped deep to get on the ball and has been excellent at helping Spurs progress the ball up the pitch.

According to the print edition of Corriere dello Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness), Manchester United are eyeing a move for Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Over the past couple of weeks, multiple Italian outlets have backed Juventus to make a move for Hojbjerg when the transfer window reopens in January (CalcioMercato).

Over the last couple of days, it has emerged that the Old Lady could face competition from Atletico Madrid (Sport Mediaset) and AS Roma (IlRomanista), both of whom are thought to have their eye on the Spurs star.

Man Utd also interested in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Corriere dello Sport have now also reported on Juve’s interest in Hojbjerg and they reveal that the Serie A giants could also face a challenge from the Red Devils, who ‘like’ the 28-year-old.

The report adds that Tottenham want a minimum of €30m (£26m) to part ways with the Denmark international in January.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham will be hoping for a bidding war to ensue so that they can get maximum value for Hojbjerg, but at the same time, the club might not want to strengthen a Premier League rival and could thus consider selling him for a lower fee to Spanish or Italian sides.

It was widely reported at the start of the transfer window that Man Utd were keen on signing Harry Kane and that the Red Devils only turned their gaze towards Hojlund after they understood that Daniel Levy would not sell the centre-forward to another Premier League side (Football Insider).

In the end, the England captain ended up joining Bayern Munich and Spurs opted not to replace him with an out-and-out number nine, signing Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest instead.

Spurs showed interest in Rasmus Hojlund

If The Athletic’s latest update is to be believed, Spurs were considering signing Hojlund as a replacement for Kane.

The report looks into United’s move for the Dane, explaining that the Red Devils believed that Tottenham were ‘genuine contenders’ for the centre-forward at a price of £70m.

However, the outlet states that the North London club did not formalise their interest in Hojlund, allowing the Manchester club to swoop for the 20-year-old.

Spurs Web Opinion

I suspect that this story is quite credible as Hojlund fits the profile of players that Spurs targeted this summer, given his age and his fit for Ange’s system.

However, I am not surprised that Tottenham did not act on their interest as £70m is quite a steep price for a player who is not yet a finished product.

AS have claimed that those at Manchester United have not only been impressed with Sergio Reguilon’s performances but also his character.

Reguilon completed a loan switch to Man Utd just a couple of days before the summer transfer deadline, with the deal reportedly having a break clause in January (The Athletic).

The injuries to both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have meant that Erik Ten Hag has had to start the Tottenham man in the last three matches across all competitions, and the Spaniard has delivered some promising displays.

Sergio Reguilon is proving to be a hit at Man United

AS say that Reguilon has ‘responded creditably’ to what the Dutch coach has asked of him and states that the left-back is one of the ‘few positives’ for the Red Devils over recent weeks.

The report adds that apart from the ‘good level’ that the 26-year-old has shown on the pitch, he has also proven his ‘character’ to the coaches at the Manchester club.

The outlet claims that Reguilon has ‘quickly gained weight’ at Old Trafford and that it ‘shows’ that he has been at big clubs.

Spurs Web Opinion

While Reguilon is a limited footballer, he can be effective in the right system and it is visible that he is now playing for his career. Tottenham would likely be happy to sell him to Man Utd permanently in January if the Red Devils do show interest.

He may have reached the end of the line when it comes to his Tottenham career, but Sergio Reguilon has picked up some praise during his time on loan at Manchester United already.

It has been a strange couple of years for Sergio Reguilon. He arrived at Tottenham from Real Madrid and managed to establish himself as a first-team regular under Jose Mourinho.

However, Antonio Conte clearly did not feel the Spaniard fit into his system and sent him out on loan to Atletico Madrid. Things didn’t go to plan there, though, with injury restricting Reguilon to just 12 appearances and 317 minutes of action (Transfermarkt).

Now, with Ange Postecoglou in charge of Spurs, there was still no way back into the first team for Reguilon, and the player was made readily available for transfer over the summer.

It appeared no move would happen for the 26-year-old until an injury to Luke Shaw left Manchester United in desperate need of a new left-back. Reguilon has joined the Red Devils on loan until January, with the option to extend.

Reguilon was the best player on the pitch for United

Manchester United lost 4-3 to Bayern Munich in midweek, with Reguilon starting in the left-back position for Erik ten Hag’s side. It was not a great performance for United, but the Spurs man still got some praise for his role.

Speaking on talkSPORT after that game, Jamie O’Hara said: “I mean [Sergio] Reguilon was [Manchester United’s] best player tonight and he’s on loan from Spurs.”

Co-host Jason Cundy added: “He was excellent.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is a bit of a back-handed compliment to say Reguilon was the best player in a very poor United team. I watched that game, and I think the best thing you can say about Reguilon is, he didn’t embarrass himself at all. He played relatively well, but he didn’t do anything special at all.

Speaking in detail for the first time since he was sacked by Manchester United back in 2021, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed he wanted to sign Harry Kane for the Red Devils, and insists the player would have made the move if the club had the money to pay for him.

It’s no secret that plenty of clubs have been interested in Harry Kane over the years. Tottenham Hotspur’s all-time leading goalscorer is the kind of player that any club in the world would love to have, as this summer proved.

Before joining Bayern Munich last month in a deal worth around £86m (Sky Sports), speculation had linked the England captain to clubs such as Manchester United (Mirror), PSG (Sky Sports), Chelsea (Metro), and Real Madrid (EuroSport).

Kane himself has even revealed yesterday that ‘a few clubs’ were in discussions to sign him this year (Football Daily).

Solskjaer wanted to sign Harry Kane for Man United

Many fans will remember the saga surrounding Manchester City’s reported approaches for Kane back in 2021, too. However, it could have been the red half of Manchester that Kane signed for, had United had enough money to facilitate a transfer.

In an interview with The Athletic, former Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke of his interest in Kane at the time and how close a transfer might have been. He said: “I would have signed Kane every day of the week and my understanding was that he wanted to come.

“But, the club didn’t have the budget with the financial constraints from Covid-19. There was no bottomless pit [of money].”

Spurs Web Opinion

I think there was genuine interest on Kane’s behalf in leaving the club two years ago, and if things had been different he would have gone.

At that time, with a longer contract, it would have been nearly impossible for a club to get the money to sign him, but Kane would definitely have been open to that idea.

Tottenham Hotspur are considering making a move to sign Manchester United defender Harry Maguire when the transfer window reopens in January, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.

The arrival of Ange Postecoglou to Spurs has seen somewhat of a changing of the guard across the backline, with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven the new first-choice partnership.

This summer, the North London side saw an overhaul in their defence with the departures of Clement Lenglet, who was on loan from Barcelona last season, Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez.

Eric Dier has also found himself drifting down the pecking order since the arrival of Postecoglou, with the Australian manager seemingly not fancying the England international.

As a result, Tottenham look light in the centre-back area, with Van de Ven and Ashley Phillips the only two additions made in the transfer window despite multiple exits.

Harry Maguire

Is Harry Maguire the solution to Spurs defence?

Maguire signed for United in the summer of 2019 from Leicester City for £80m million after catching a lot of people’s attention with his displays for the Foxes as well as with the Three Lions in the 2018 World Cup.

However, things have unravelled for the 30-year-old over the last few years at the Red Devils, with the centre-back losing his place in the team as well as the captaincy at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag clearly does not have faith in Maguire to start week-in week-out for United and the Dutch manager has instead often relied on Victor Lindelof to play as the backup when Raphael Varane or Lisandro Martinez are unavailable.

Spurs Web Opinion

Considering Romero’s consistent fitness issues at Tottenham, it would be wise for us to add reinforcements in defence. However, it does not seem wise to count on a player like Maguire, who has been poor for United in recent months.

Journalist Dean Jones has said that Tottenham Hotspur would only consider making a move for Jadon Sancho in January if he is available for a cut-price fee.

While there has never been any doubt over Sancho’s talent, the winger has struggled to live up to his potential at United since his £73m switch from Borussia Dortmund back in 2021.

Some publications reported during the summer that Tottenham had their eye on the 23-year-old (Daily Star), with journalist Ben Jacobs even suggesting at the start of July that the Lilywhites reached out to Man Utd about the player’s availability (GiveMeSport).

Aston Villa were also credited with an interest in the England international during the summer (Football Transfers) but in the end, he remained at Old Trafford.

Jadon Sancho

Would Jadon Sancho be a good signing for Spurs?

However, it now looks like Sancho’s time at the Manchester club might soon come to an end after the forward publicly refuted Erik Ten Hag’s claim about his performance in training and accused the United boss of making him a scapegoat (talkSPORT).

It has since been reported that the former Dortmund star is training away from the first-team at United after refusing to apologise to the Dutchman (The Athletic).

When asked if Tottenham could reignite their interest in Sancho in January, Jones has now told GiveMeSport: “It doesn’t feel like the sort of one that Tottenham are going to be looking for in the January window, from what I can tell at this stage.

“So I wouldn’t necessarily expect them to need to come back in for Jadon Sancho in a moment like that unless an easy loan or a really cheap deal opened up.

“But the big question for Jadon Sancho will be whether he even has a future within the Premier League or he needs to go back abroad again. I think that’s going to be the first thing that he has to address.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Even if Sancho felt that he had trained well in the week leading up to the Arsenal game and that Ten Hag’s assessment was incorrect, it certainly was not the right decision to air his grievances on social media.

That combined with his refusal to apologise and his poor body language whenever opportunities come his way, suggests that the 23-year-old has some attitude issues. So, I do not think the idea of signing Sancho would appeal to Postecoglou.

Gareth Bale may be a Tottenham Hotspur legend, but he could have ended up at Manchester United as a teenager instead. Luckily for Spurs, Bale opted to search out first-team opportunities rather than follow the money.

During his two spells at Tottenham, Gareth Bale scored 71 goals and contributed 58 assists in 236 appearances for the Lilywhites (Transfermarkt).

The Welshman joined Spurs from Southampton in 2007 as a 17-year-old left-back with lots to learn. He left the club in 2013 to join Real Madrid in a then world record £85m deal (BBC).

By that point, Bale had become an elite attacker. His blistering pace, formidable shooting ability, and penchant for flair made him one of the very best in the world.

And he improved further still after joining Madrid. Bale went on to win multiple trophies with the La Liga side, but never truly settled in Spain.

Bale later rejoined Tottenham on loan for the 2020/21 campaign, scoring 16 goals in 34 appearances for his former side (Transfermarkt).

Gareth Bale turned down Man United for Tottenham

His career path could have been very different, however, had Bale accepted an offer from Manchester United instead of Spurs.

He told The Sun: “I rejected Manchester United and went to Tottenham. At that time, United were the biggest team in the league, they were winning trophies, they had the biggest players, the best manager. The easiest decision would be to go to Man United and the biggest club.

“You always want to be at the biggest clubs but I took the approach that I wanted to be playing first-team football. At that age, a lot of players would go for the money and would want to go to a bigger club.

“But I was playing, developing and learning. It was an important part of my development to keep playing first-team football because you can’t replicate that.”

Spurs Web Opinion

He may not have had as much success at Spurs as his talent deserved, but he wouldn’t have been the player he became if it wasn’t for that developmental period at the club. I’m sure Bale wouldn’t trade his time at Tottenham for anything, especially considering how his career ultimately played out.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham explored a deal to sign Rasmus Hojlund earlier in the summer before the striker eventually signed for Manchester United.

Tottenham were linked with a whole host of centre-forwards this summer following the departure of Harry Kane, with Gent’s Gift Orban, Lille’s Jonathan David and Porto’s Mehdi Taremi being among those linked with moves to the North London club (CaugthOffside).

However, instead of signing an out-and-out number nine to replace the England captain, Ange Postecoglou’s men secured the services of the versatile Brennan Johnson on transfer deadline day, with the Welshman joining what looks set to be a fluid Spurs frontline this season.

Romano has now revealed that Tottenham also enquired about the availability of Hojlund back in July after the Dane’s breakthrough season at Atalanta last term.

Man Utd eventually paid £72m for the 22-year-old, with the journalist explaining that Spurs were unable to push ahead with a move for the youngster without any clarity on Kane’s future.

Tottenham looked at a deal for Rasmus Hojlund

Romano said on his YouTube channel: “There is another club, an English club, and that club, from what I’m hearing, is Tottenham.

“Tottenham, in July, asked for information for Rasmus Hojlund, so they wanted to be informed of the conditions of the deal, the conditions of the deal also on the player side.

“But it was not possible to proceed. First of all, Kane was not sold yet to Bayern and so Hojlund to Tottenham was only possible in case they sold Kane to Bayern, something that happened later in the window in August, not in July. It was the month when they asked for information on Rasmus Hojlund.

“But it’s also important to mention that for the player, in that moment, it was something like, ‘Let me focus on United because my dream move is to Manchester United’.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It sounds like Tottenham’s interest in Hojlund never went past a preliminary stage. While the 20-year-old undoubtedly has plenty of potential, it would have been a huge risk for Spurs to shatter their transfer record on a player who is relatively unproven at the highest level.

Fabrizio Romano has said that Tottenham will now have to pay more to sign Edmond Tapsoba after the centre-back signed a new contract with Bayer Leverkusen.

While Spurs did strengthen their backline with the addition of Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg during the summer, some Tottenham fans will feel that the club could have done more to revamp their options in central defence.

With Davinson Sanchez now having joined Galatasaray, the Lilywhites are short of options at the back and might have to turn to young Ashley Phillips or Eric Dier in case there is an injury to one of their two starting centre-backs.

One defender who reportedly featured high on the North London club’s wishlist during the summer was Tapsoba (GiveMeSport) but the 24-year-old stayed put at Leverkusen.

In what came as a blow to Spurs, the Bundesliga outfit officially confirmed on Monday that the Burkina Faso international had put pen to paper on a new five-year deal at the club.

Romano does not know if Spurs still want Tapsoba

Romano has said that the likes of Spurs and Manchester United would need to pay significantly more than the previously reported €40m- €45m (£34.1m-£38.4m) fee to sign the centre-back.

The journalist told CaughtOffside: “Edmond Tapsoba – As revealed yesterday, Edmond Tapsoba has signed a new contract with Bayer Leverkusen after speculation over a move away this summer.

“This now means that he will be more expensive if any club want to move for him in 2024. Bayer Leverkusen believe he’s a top player and worth more than the reported €40/45m fee.

“Honestly I can’t predict for now if Manchester United and Spurs will be back in for him – nothing is decided now for 2024, and so we will see based on this season.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no indication that Tapsoba’s contract contains any release clause. The likelihood is that Bayer will demand £60m or over for the 24-year-old, particularly if he has another impressive campaign at the Bay Arena.

With the Premier League pausing for the impending international break, now is a good time to take a look at the fixtures on the horizon for Tottenham Hotspur when they return. We will also compare these to the other teams competing for a spot in the top six.

Tottenham have made a blistering start to life under Ange Postecoglou so far, with three wins and a draw leaving the Lilywhites second in the Premier League right now.

Spurs have already taken three points from Bournemouth, Manchester United, and most recently, Burnley. The North London side started the new campaign with a hard-fought draw against Brentford.

While this is certainly an exciting time for Tottenham fans, there is still a long way to go this season. But, Spurs do hold an advantage over their rivals, and that is the fact they will not be playing any cup matches until the New Year.

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s easy to forget just how congested that fixture list can be when you are playing continental football, but being out of the Champions League this season really could be a blessing in disguise looking at these schedules.

We have a couple of tough games against Arsenal and Liverpool that we have to make the most of, and then the other three matches are games we realistically should be winning comfortably.
